Everyday Wellness: How does the Galaxy Watch9 Perform as a Daily Health Companion?

Galaxy Watch9 is built for all-day wear and designed to be an everyday health companion. Fino Yurio Kristo from Detik (Indonesia) emphasizes key enhancements: “The Galaxy Watch9 brings significant improvements to the daily health monitoring experience. This two-part Q&A series with Carl Nordenberg, Vice President and Regional Head of Mobile eXperience Business, Samsung Southeast Asia & Oceania, explores how AI and new mobile form factors are reshaping the way people interact with technology. Q: What type of users in Southeast Asia and Oceania is Samsung trying to reach with its foldable devices, especially with the new form factor?

Carl Nordenberg: Samsung has led and defined the foldable category for seven generations. Over that time, we’ve developed a much deeper understanding of what people enjoy doing most on their foldable devices.

Southeast Asia and Oceania is a highly mobile-first region. We have seen our foldables users spending a significant amount of time on social media, video streaming, and gaming – alongside productivity and increasingly AI-driven experiences.

That is why our latest foldable lineup is designed around distinct user needs. The Galaxy Z Fold8, with its 4:3 main display, provides a more immersive experience for entertainment, reading, and media consumption. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra with its large 8-inch main display, is designed for people who want to get more done through multi-tasking and enhanced productivity. And for people who prioritize portability, design, and self-expression, the sleek Galaxy Z Flip8 is the ideal choice.

There isn’t one ideal form factor for every consumer. Our objective is to give people a choice based on how they want to use their device.

And as AI adoption accelerates across our region, these different form factors also create new possibilities for further enhancing the AI experience – across productivity, and creativity.

Q: How has the durability of foldables from Samsung been improved?

Carl Nordenberg: Durability has been one of the areas where we have learned the most over seven generations of Foldables leadership.

One exciting advancement in our new Galaxy Z series is the introduction of Flex Titanium technology. Our redesigned display structure utilizes structural and material advancements to deliver more refined product experiences – while also enhancing durability and reducing crease visibility.

But engineering improvements are only meaningful if they stand up to everyday use. To ensure that the new Galaxy Z series is built for real-world conditions, Samsung conducted more than 100 reliability validation tests, including drops, repeated folding, pressure, moisture and debris.

This allowed us to better understand how the devices would perform under different conditions and identify potential issues.  We strive to continuously improve our foldables with each generation so that consumers have the confidence to pick the foldable that best fits them. Our priority is to preserve the unique advantages of the foldable form factor, by delivering larger and more immersive displays, as well as lighter and thinner devices without compromising durability and performance.

Q: How are Galaxy AI features optimized for each of the different form factors?

Carl Nordenberg: This is where foldables become particularly interesting. AI should not simply be the same experience placed onto a different-sized screen. The foldable form factor can give users more ways to interact with AI and what they are able to do with it. And with One UI 9, we’ve refined those interactions for each device.

On the Z Fold8 Ultra, the larger screen and split-view functionality make it particularly powerful for productivity and multi-tasking. For example, users can access Now Nudge and keep Automation progress visible while other content stays on-screen at the same time.

On the Z Fold8, One UI 9 takes advantage of both its unique 10:16 cover screen and 4:3 main display, giving users different ways to consume, create, and interact with content, depending on if their device is open or folded.

And on the Z Flip8, AI experiences like Now Brief can be accessed directly from FlexWindow, so users can get useful and timely information without even opening their phone.

The important point is that we are designing each form factor around different priorities and use cases, to bring the best AI experiences to Galaxy foldable users.

Q: How can the new Galaxy Z8 Series help a workforce be more productive at work?

Carl Nordenberg: Our existing Z Fold devices have already shown us how valuable a larger mobile display can be for productivity.

For some users, a device such as the Z Fold 8 Ultra can also potentially allow businesses to consolidate what they previously did across both a mobile phone and a tablet. They can communicate, review documents, work across multiple applications and access more information at once, while still carrying a device that fits easily in their hand.

The new form factor also creates opportunities for businesses with highly mobile workforces. Think about a sales representative, a field-service employee or someone who spends much of the day moving between locations. They may need more screen space to review information, demonstrate content or complete tasks, but they do not necessarily want to carry several devices.

That combination of portability and a larger workspace is one of the most compelling productivity benefits of the foldable form factor.

Q: Consumers today could say “I am interested in a foldable device but haven’t yet made the switch”. What’s the biggest reason one should?

Carl Nordenberg: Foldables have come a long way over the past seven generations.

When we first launched the category, foldables were often seen as something primarily for tech enthusiasts and early adopters. But with each generation, we have made the devices, thinner, lighter, more durable, more powerful, and more distinctively useful in everyday life.

One of the most encouraging things we see in growing the foldables category, is that once consumers actually experience a foldable phone, they’re much more open to the category. In fact, the Fold7 and Flip7 achieved an almost 40% repurchase rate in Southeast Asia and Oceania, showing that once consumers adopt foldables, many choose to stay with the category.

We’re also seeing that momentum continue with this generation. Our new Galaxy Z8 series has been enthusiastically embraced by consumers in the region, with pre-orders for foldables in Southeast Asia and Oceania achieving a record-high with the new launch. Additionally, pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra devices were almost 60% higher compared to the Galaxy Z Fold7.

I think this progress reflects our focus and commitment to making foldables a mainstream category. We’ve delivered meaningful improvements with every generation and we will continue to refine the portfolio based on user needs. We want the form factor to fit naturally into how people already live, work, create, and communicate – while giving them more possibilities

Across Southeast Asia and Oceania, consumers are using AI to communicate, create content, find information, improve productivity, and manage daily tasks. As these experiences are increasingly supported by the devices and services people already use, the conversation is moving beyond individual features. People are starting to ask how AI can become more useful, more accessible, and more seamless in daily life.

This is the second article in a two-part Q&A series with Carl Nordenberg, Vice President and Regional Head of mobile eXperience Business, Samsung Southeast Asia & Oceania. In part 2, he discusses the rapidly evolving AI landscape and why Samsung believes the future will be defined by choice, openness, and experiences built around users’ needs.

Q: With multiple AI systems available, how should users know which AI they should use?

Carl Nordenberg: There isn’t one “correct” AI model. It depends on the user, the situation, and the task at hand.

Our goal is to provide the best AI experience possible. Different AI models have different strengths and since we launched Galaxy S26 earlier this year, we’ve offered users a variety of trusted AI agents to rely on. For example, users might activate Bixby as a conversational device agent, and choose an alternative agent for search and discovery.

Instead of only relying on one AI agent, we are focused on enabling multiple agents to work seamlessly across apps, services, and features, so that users can enjoy more natural and personalized experiences.

 Q: What is Samsung’s long-term vision for Galaxy AI?

Carl Nordenberg: Our strategy is to remain open to collaborating with companies that can provide the best AI experiences for our customers, while also developing our own AI technologies and solutions.

One important area of focus for Samsung is localization. Regions like Southeast Asia and Oceania are incredibly diverse and we are committed to expanding language support and providing enhanced AI experiences that are genuinely useful in local contexts.

The AI landscape will continue to evolve, which is why we’re building Galaxy AI as a platform. Ultimately, the vision for Galaxy AI is to integrate the right capabilities – both from Samsung and our partners – to deliver seamless and differentiated experiences to our users. Starting with the Galaxy Z8 series, we’re moving beyond just adding AI features on top of the OS but building deeper system-level foundation with the engines, policies and intelligence needed for agents, apps and services to work together.

Q: Five years from now, what do you hope consumers think of when they hear “Galaxy AI”?

Carl Nordenberg: Five years from now, we’d like consumers to associate Galaxy AI with the best AI experience available, not just on mobile phones, but across the broader Samsung ecosystem.

Samsung has an advantage with our ecosystem where users can interact with AI across multiple different touchpoints. From mobile phones and watches, to tablets, televisions, and other smart home appliances, each device captures different signals about who the user is and what they need.

For example, your phone may recognize events in your calendar, and know when you have a busy schedule, while your watch understands your sleep and activity patterns. Working together with other connected devices, AI can surface the right information at the right times to help you manage your day more easily.

Q: What will the next phase of mobile AI look like for consumers?

Carl Nordenberg: I don’t think the next phase of mobile AI will be defined by one assistant, one model or one breakthrough feature. It will be defined by how naturally AI fits into everyday life. For Samsung, that means staying open, working with the best partners and giving users choice, while keeping the user experience simple. Different AI systems will continue to have different strengths. The value comes from making those strengths available in ways that feel seamless, useful, and relevant for each individual.

That is particularly important in Southeast Asia and Oceania, where people use mobile technology across so many parts of their lives, from work and communication to entertainment and creativity.

The future of AI will depend not only on what the technology can do, but on how naturally it supports what people already want to do.

In that sense, the most meaningful AI may be the one you notice the least: it understands your context, helps at the right moment, and makes your everyday tasks easier.

Across seven generations, Samsung has helped define the foldable category through advances in display technology, hinge engineering and materials innovation — all driven by a deep understanding of how people use their devices.

To hear how those insights guided the engineering behind Samsung’s latest foldables, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Sunghoon Moon, Executive Vice President and Senior Executive of Mobile R&D Office – Hardware, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics.

 Q. How have seven generations of user insights shaped Samsung’s approach to the latest Galaxy Z Series?

From the beginning, we saw foldables as an opportunity to redefine how people interact with their smartphones — not simply as a new form factor. Through seven generations, we’ve learned how people open, carry, unfold and rely on their devices. Those insights have shaped our engineering priorities and guided each new generation of the Galaxy Z Series.

Over time, three priorities became clear: larger, more immersive displays; thinner and lighter devices without compromising durability; and ultra performance while preserving the unique advantages of the foldable form factor. Delivering all three became the defining engineering challenge behind the latest Galaxy Z Series.

Q. Samsung describes foldable innovation as engineering one connected system. What does that mean in practice?

With foldables, every component is interconnected. Making a device thinner, for example, means redesigning the display, hinge, battery, thermal system and internal architecture together. Rather than optimising individual parts separately, we engineer the entire device as one connected system. This end-to-end engineering philosophy extends from materials and component design to manufacturing, validation and the final product experience — allowing engineering advancements to become improvements people experience every day.

Samsung engineered each of the latest foldables as one connected system to bring about key improvements for users.

Q. The new Galaxy Z Series introduces Flex Titanium technology. What engineering challenges did it solve? 

Our goal was to make foldables thinner and lighter without compromising durability or the viewing experience. That required us to rework the display support structure protecting the ultra-thin OLED panel while preserving the flexibility needed for repeated folding.

Used in demanding industries such as aerospace, titanium offered the strength and resistance against permanent deformation essential for a foldable display. But selecting the material was only the beginning. The real challenge was developing the processing, structural design and manufacturing expertise needed to make titanium suitable for repeated folding.

Flex Titanium technology makes the display thinner and more durable while reducing crease visibility.

Flex Titanium combines two titanium-based elements. The titanium plate beneath the display serves as the primary structural support, helping absorb pressure and impacts from both the front and rear of the device. A precision-engineered lattice structure — created through a hybrid manufacturing process — allows the plate to remain flexible while maintaining structural strength. Beneath the display panel, the titanium-alloy film provides the strength, flexibility and elastic recovery needed to support repeated everyday folding, even at a thickness of just tens of micrometres — roughly one-third the thickness of a human hair.

Flex Titanium technology features an exceptionally thin titanium-alloy film and precision-engineered titanium plate.

Together, these innovations strengthened the display support structure while reducing display module thickness by 10%, creating additional space for the battery, thermal system and camera. For users, that translates into a thinner, lighter device with a flatter display and reduced crease visibility.

Q. How did Samsung reinvent the battery system for the latest Galaxy Z Series?

 Users expect longer battery life, faster charging and a thinner foldable — without compromising safety, stability or long-term reliability. Meeting those expectations required reengineering the battery system, not simply increasing battery capacity.

We introduced a silicon-carbon anode to improve energy density, but the innovation extends beyond the anode. Because silicon-carbon materials are more reactive, maintaining long-term stability under high-voltage conditions meant optimising the entire battery system. Improvements to the display structure also created additional internal space, allowing us to redesign the battery system while preserving a slimmer form factor. As a result, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra features a 5,000 mAh battery.

The same philosophy shaped charging. Rather than applying a single solution across the line-up, we developed charging architectures tailored to each foldable form factor. Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold8 use a dual-path charging architecture that helps distribute power more efficiently across the battery system, enabling faster, more stable and reliable charging while improving heat management. This supports 45 W fast charging, enabling Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra to reach a 67% charge in 30 minutes. For Galaxy Z Flip8, the charging architecture was separately optimised for the unique spatial and thermal requirements of its compact form factor.

Q. To ensure foldables can withstand years of everyday use, how does Samsung validate durability before bringing a device to market?

For us, durability isn’t just about design — it must be proven through testing. We validated the complete foldable system under conditions that reflect how people use their devices. The latest Galaxy Z Series was subjected to more than 100 reliability validation tests covering real-world conditions including drops, repeated folding, pressure, moisture and debris. Our goal was to understand how the complete device performs in everyday use, identify potential issues before they reach customers and build foldables people can trust.

Q. Looking back at the entire development process, how would you describe Samsung’s approach behind the Galaxy Z Series?

Everything starts with the user. Over seven generations, we’ve transformed user insights into innovations in materials, components and the overall device experience. That philosophy continues to guide the Galaxy Z Series — delivering foldables that are thinner, more durable, more capable and more intuitive year after year.

To explore that vision, Samsung hosted a Health Forum panel, “Rewriting the Rules of Preventive Health.” Moderated by Dr. Hon Pak, Senior Vice President and Head of the Digital Health Team, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, the session brought together leaders across nutrition, fitness, clinical research and AI to examine how technology can close the gap between knowing and doing in everyday health.

The Paradox — and the “Missing Miles” of Health

Opening the discussion, Dr. Pak described a paradox at the heart of modern health: innovation and technology today has been transformational and accelerating, yet chronic disease continues to rise around the world.

“We live in the most measured era in human history — billions of people track their sleep, their stress, their heart rate every single day. And yet chronic disease keeps rising. More data, it turns out, hasn’t resulted in better health.”

He framed the disconnect as two “missing miles.” The first mile is detection and monitoring: much of what shapes our health happens outside the clinic, and until recently, continuous monitoring was neither available nor connected to the physician. The last mile is action: even after a diagnosis and a care plan, it is the individual who has to act day after day — and life is busy, and change is hard.

Samsung, Dr. Pak argued, is uniquely positioned to close both gaps. With technology that stays with people throughout their daily lives — across wearables, mobile phones, and a connected ecosystem — Samsung can understand not just raw biometric numbers, but the context behind them.

“We don’t just see a number — we see what’s around it: whether this is a moment you’re ready to change something, or a moment you need a bit of support. Being there, at the point where personal decisions actually get made, is hard for a hospital, or any other company, to measure or act upon.”

But no single company can do this alone. That, he said, is why Samsung is building Connected Care together with partners — closing the first and last mile to scale prevention, with AI as the enabler across both. He introduced the three focus areas that would structure the conversation: everyday behavior, clinical credibility and privacy, and advanced AI and research.

Everyday Behaviour: Closing the Last Mile at the Dinner Table and the Gym

Diet and exercise are two of the biggest levers on long-term health — and two of the most within our control. They are also, Dr. Pak noted, where the gap between knowing and doing is widest.

Kartik Poria, Head of Product at Samsung Food, located that gap in a moment everyone recognises.

“It’s Tuesday, six o’clock. You’re tired, you’re staring into the fridge, and everything you know about eating well loses to whatever’s quickest. That moment is what we’re going after — because what you eat, day after day, is one of the biggest levers we have on preventing chronic disease.”

He described how Samsung Health and Samsung Food are coming together to tackle two halves of the same problem: Samsung Health surfaces what is happening beneath the surface — indicators such as meal logs, BMI, the Antioxidant Index and the AGEs Index — while Samsung Food’s global recipe library facilitates meal planning and its food intelligence reflect how people actually like to eat. Sitting on top is a nutrition experience grounded in behaviour change science rather than tracking alone — learning a person’s habits and working with them so the healthier pattern becomes the easier one.

“We’re not adding another thing to manage — we’re making the healthy choice the easy one, for the night you’ve got the energy to cook and the night you don’t.”

Turning to movement, Kevin Duffy, CEO of iFIT, described exercise as foundational to both physical and mental wellbeing, and explained how iFIT’s expert-led programs are becoming more accessible through Samsung Health.

“Exercise is vital for both physical and mental wellbeing — cardiovascular health, strength, mobility, sleep quality, stress management.”

Through Samsung Health, users can discover and subscribe to iFIT’s premium fitness programs, while iFIT workouts integrate with Galaxy Watch so users can track key metrics during guided sessions. With Fitness Index, they receive a holistic view of their physical fitness in a single, easy-to-understand score, with personalised recommendations. Looking ahead, Duffy pointed to Samsung’s Health Assistant as a way to bring a user’s Fitness Index, goals and activity history together to surface the most relevant workout at the right moment.

But content and insights alone, Dr. Pak noted, don’t close the last mile. The harder question is how to move from engagement to activation. Samsung designs for real life, recognizing that people slip and miss goals most of the time — and that those moments are precisely when timely, well-contextualised support matters most.

The real measure, he argued, is not how often the system nudges someone, but how many healthy actions actually happen — a doctor’s low-salt advice quietly showing up as items in a grocery cart, or a workout that meets a person where they actually are that day. Poria added that this is the true shift: from nudging people to changing the choice in front of them.

Clinical Credibility and Privacy: Trust Earned Through Evidence

Dr. Pak turned next to the question of trust — noting that wearable data is now something most clinicians have seen, but far fewer have been able to build into their day-to-day care. Closing that gap, he said, is a matter of evidence, workflow and trust.

Rohit Ail, Head of the Technology Incubation Lab at Samsung R&D Institute UK (SRUK), spoke to how his team works to generate clinical evidence in real-world settings.

“Our goal is to meet the standards expected by clinicians, researchers and regulatory bodies, and that means generating evidence in real-world clinical environments. This commitment builds on Samsung’s growing body of clinical research and validation evidence.”

He referenced ongoing collaborations across Europe, including partnerships with the NHS and clinical validation studies with leading hospitals. With San Cecilio University Hospital in Spain and Gemelli in Italy, Samsung is working on identifying and managing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk using AI and decision-support technologies; with Fondazione IRCCS in Italy, the focus is on understanding and addressing the late effects faced by adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors through AI-based digital phenotyping and a non-invasive, holistic approach.

On privacy, Ail noted that Samsung considers user data to belong to the user, with Samsung acting as custodian.

“Trust begins with protecting users’ data. Samsung takes a three-layer approach: Samsung Knox for device-level security, GDPR-compliant infrastructure, and alignment with the European Health Data Space framework.”

He added that SRUK has also developed a Decentralised Clinical Trial framework, in which participant identities remain under the control of healthcare organisations and data is pseudonymised from the outset.

Advanced AI and Research: Reading the Body’s Signals

If everyday reach and clinical trust are two of the three pillars, intelligence is what binds them together. Dr. Pak introduced foundation models as a genuine turning point — a shift from population averages to something truly personal.

Otávio Penatti, Head of the Health AI R&D Team at Samsung R&D Institute Brazil (SRBR), explained what a foundation model for health actually means.

“A health foundation model is an AI model that uses self-supervised learning to learn meaningful features from unlabelled biosignal data. At Samsung, we are advancing health foundation model research across multiple global research teams, combining expertise in biosignal intelligence, wearable AI, and personalised health insights. Building on the success of large language models, we can now interpret complex biosignals — such as ECG, ACC and PPG — not as isolated data points, but as a structured biological language. These signals can be measured through wearable devices in everyday situations, and by applying foundation models to understand these biological patterns, we have the potential to provide more accurate predictions and continuous, personalised health insights.”

Samsung Electronics today unveiled new Flex Titanium technology for the next generation of Galaxy foldable devices. Built on seven generations of foldable innovation and engineering expertise, the redesigned display structure utilises structural and material advancements to deliver a more refined viewing experience with enhanced durability and reduced crease visibility. Made possible thanks to Samsung’s accumulated display know-how, Flex Titanium technology integrates two titanium-based components — a titanium-alloy film and a titanium plate — working together to balance slimness, flexibility and strength within the foldable display structure.

Building on Years of Foldable Experience

Samsung has played a leading role in advancing mobile display innovation and bringing it to consumers at scale through mobile devices. This legacy includes the widespread adoption of AMOLED displays in 2007 and the evolution of displays into flexible form factors.

Innovative technologies can only reach their full potential and provide meaningful user experiences through continuous refinement in real-world conditions and the foldable category is no exception. Across seven generations of Galaxy foldables, Samsung has listened closely to consumer feedback. This has given the company a deep understanding of what users expect from the category: a larger, more immersive viewing experience with less visible crease — without compromising durability or portability.

To meet these expectations, Samsung had to rethink how foldable displays are constructed by bringing together breakthroughs in technology, materials and mechanical engineering. The result is the latest milestone in foldable display innovation: Flex Titanium technology. By successfully integrating display innovation with device engineering, Samsung will continue to shape the direction of the mobile industry and deliver standout user experiences.

Flex Titanium: Next-Level Viewing

To create a display that provides an immersive viewing experience while maintaining its ability to withstand everyday use, Samsung took a new approach to structural design. This required a material strong enough to withstand external shock, flexible enough to endure repeated folding and thin enough to fit within a refined device structure. Balancing all three factors was essential to advancing foldable displays — and titanium offered the right mix.

Known for its resilience and strength, titanium has been used in some of the most demanding applications, including satellite antennas and the wheels of a Mars rover. While its strength makes titanium a dependable material, it also presents significant engineering challenges when applied to the thin and flexible structure of a foldable display due to its stiffness. Drawing on its expertise, Samsung has integrated titanium into two key components: a titanium-alloy film and a titanium plate.

The titanium-alloy film is a component that supports the display from within, sitting below the OLED panel. Compared with polymer film, it provides 20 times greater mechanical stiffness. A precision rolling process makes the material exceptionally thin — measuring roughly one-third the thickness of an average human hair — enabling a slimmer display panel.

Below this sits a robust titanium plate, a flexible structure that supports the display module from beneath. It allows tighter bonding with the display module by eliminating air gaps between the module and the adhesive on the plate through advanced hole processing technology. This new structure provides more stable support underneath the display when unfolded while retaining the flexibility needed to accommodate repeated folding.

Furthermore, by integrating a high-resolution architecture and next-generation organic materials, the new display delivers ultra-vivid display resolution while reducing power consumption — delivering a dramatic boost in overall power efficiency.

“By introducing sophisticated micro-patterned holes to the folding section of the titanium plate, we have successfully secured flexibility with robust durability,” said Kyung-Jin Yoo, EVP and Head of Mobile Display Product Development Team, Samsung Display. “Combining high-resolution display architecture with new organic materials that maximize power efficiency, we will further strengthen the competitiveness of next-generation Galaxy foldable devices.”

Together, these advancements enable a strong foldable display that maximizes content immersion on a seamless screen and reduces crease visibility — all while keeping it slim. By balancing strength, flexibility and structural stability, Samsung continues to set the bar for foldable displays.
