Millions worldwide suffer from sleep apnea, but 80% of sufferers[1] don’t even know they have it. This serious condition causes people to pause breathing while asleep, potentially disrupting oxygen supply, lowering sleep quality, and leading to health complications including hypertension and stroke. Despite these risks, the disorder largely goes unnoticed because getting a diagnosis usually requires time-consuming and costly in-lab sleep studies.

To mark World Sleep Day 2026, a global study of Samsung Health users[2] is shedding new light on the true extent of the condition and the disruptive impact it has on your sleep. Aligned with this year’s World Sleep Day theme, “Sleep Well, Live Better,” Samsung is turning the invisible signs of sleep apnea into actionable insights through its Galaxy Watch series, helping those affected improve their sleep habits and overall health.

How Does Sleep Apnea Impact Your Sleep?

The report found that 23% of study participants are at risk of sleep apnea.

“The microarousals and awakenings that follow breathing pauses fragment your sleep,” explains behavioral sleep scientist Dr. Vanessa Hill. “Those occurrences can prevent the brain from staying in the REM and deep sleep stages necessary for cognitive and physical restoration.”

The report shows these constant disruptions take a direct toll on sleep duration and quality, leading to:

Reduced REM Sleep: Participants with moderate to severe sleep apnea indicators detected by their Galaxy Watch got around four minutes less rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the phase where our brains process emotions, consolidate memories and cement learning. Without enough of it, people can experience mood instability and memory problems, impacting performance at work and overall well-being.

Less Deep Sleep: Sleep apnea also robs sufferers of deep sleep, approximately eight minutes less per night, on average. This is the body’s critical physical restoration phase, where growth hormone is released, muscles are repaired, and your immune system is activated. Losing out on deep sleep is why you may feel physically exhausted, have slower recovery times, and get sick more often.

Frequent Nightly Awakenings: Study participants with signs of sleep apnea also woke up regularly during the night and stayed awake around four minutes longer. These interruptions derail the sleep cycle, locking you into lighter, less restorative stages and making next-day exhaustion inevitable, no matter how long you slept.

Shorter Sleep Duration: Overall, people with a higher likelihood of sleep apnea averaged around 12 minutes less sleep. While this loss may seem minor, it can have a significant impact on overall sleep quality as your sleep cycle gets fragmented throughout the night.

Why It Matters: “Even a small loss in sleep duration is compounded by a larger loss of sleep quality,” said Dr. Hill. “This can be the difference between simply being ‘in bed’ and getting restorative rest, which could be why people feel so tired the next day.”

Dr. Hill also advocates a multidimensional approach to sleep health. “Sleep apnea affects many dimensions of sleep — duration, quality, sleep efficiency and even daytime fatigue,” she stated. “They together help determine our health and functioning.”

With sleep apnea shown to impact all aspects of sleep and lead to other health complications, detection is an essential first step in the fight against the condition.

How Does Galaxy Watch Help Detect Signs of Moderate to Severe Sleep Apnea?

For years, sleep apnea has been difficult to detect due to the need for inconvenient hospital tests. However, Samsung offers at-home detection with a first-of-its-kind Sleep Apnea[3] feature on your Galaxy Watch.

How It Works: Users simply track their sleep with a compatible Galaxy Watch[4] for more than four hours over two nights within a ten-day period. Available through the Samsung Health Monitor app, the Sleep Apnea feature enables users to proactively spot signs of the condition. Initially launched in Korea, the feature has since received De Novo authorization from the U.S. FDA and is now available in 78 markets[5] worldwide and counting.

The Technology: Leveraging the Galaxy Watch’s BioActive Sensor, the feature tracks blood oxygen levels to determine when the user stops breathing (apnea) or is not breathing enough (hypopnea). Based on this data, the feature estimates the user’s Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), which indicates the severity of obstructive sleep apnea(OSA).

From Awareness to Action: By detecting signs of sleep apnea early, the feature provides the data needed for an informed consultation with a medical professional. In addition to tackling sleep apnea, your Galaxy Watch can help you build habits for better holistic sleep health. Features include the Sleep Coaching program for detailed analysis and tips on how to improve sleep quality and Bedtime Guidance,[6] which recommends your optimal bedtime to ensure you consistently get enough sleep.

“For years, the inconvenience of an in-lab clinical sleep study has been a barrier to diagnosing sleep apnea,” added Dr. Hill. “Wearable technology such as Galaxy Watch is a breakthrough because it democratizes that first step. It allows people to gather meaningful data from their own beds, providing a starting point for a conversation with a healthcare professional.”

Take Control of Your Night

A good night’s sleep is the first step toward a healthier, more energized life, and Samsung is here to guide you. Samsung’s ecosystem offers end-to-end care, from detecting signs of sleep apnea on your Galaxy Watch to providing suggestions to receive professional adviceto connecting you with professional advice through our health network.

Looking ahead, Samsung is constantly innovating and improving the Sleep Apnea feature to make it even more powerful with sharper insights. Prioritize your rest today to unlock a healthier tomorrow.

The Samsung Bespoke AI WindFree Air Conditioners feature a ‘Good Sleep’ mode that promotes restful sleep by automatically adjusting the temperature according to different sleep stages. This mode has been recently upgraded to allow users to connect their air conditioners with their Galaxy Watch series and Galaxy Ring, allowing ‘Good Sleep’ mode to be automatically activated when they fall asleep.[1]

The Effect of Temperature on Good Sleep

Ambient temperature plays a crucial role in sleep quality. Waking up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat or shivering due to the cold is a common and relatable experience for many people. This year, due to global warming, various regions across the globe experience unusual temperature patterns, with nights growing even warmer relative to days. As a result, numerous individuals struggled to get quality sleep, negatively impacting their daily routines and overall mood. Based on this observation, Samsung decided to develop a mode on its air conditioners to enable more suitable sleeping temperatures so that people get better sleep during the night.

The key insight behind this mode is that the optimal temperature for sleep isn’t consistent throughout the night. This is why although many set their air conditioner to the ‘optimal’ temperature before going to bed, their sleep still gets interrupted. It varies according to the sleep stage a person is at – whether a person is falling asleep, in deep sleep, or waking from sleep. The team, in 2015, partnered with Kyunghee University to find the optimal temperature for each sleep stage, and develop an adequate algorithm for the air conditioner.

How it Functions

The ‘Good Sleep’ cycle adjusts the indoor temperature at each of the 5 stages of sleep – wake, REM (Rapid eye movement), and 3 stages of NREM (Non-rapid eye movement sleep). Each stage of sleep includes variations in brain wave patterns, eye movements, and body temperature. First, when a person falls asleep, temperature is quickly lowered within 5 minutes to immediately create pleasant environment. The temperature is kept low consistently during the next 90 minutes to facilitate deeper sleep. Starting from 90 minutes, the air conditioner increases the temperature to prepare for the deeper stages of sleep – N2 and N3. During these stages, the external environment should be warmer as body temperature and blood pressure fall the most. Temperature is increased by up to two degrees above target level to prevent awakening due to cold sensation.

Throughout the eight-hour sleep cycle, alternating periods of lighter REM sleep and deeper NREM sleep occur. The ‘Good Sleep’ mode continually modifies the temperature throughout the night, adjusting it by approximately three times. Approaching the end of one’s sleep cycle, temperature is kept high, but gentle wind is blown to create a refreshing atmosphere.

In Bespoke AI WindFree Air Conditioners, ‘Good Sleep’ mode works on WindFree mode while for normal models, air is blown out via Fast Cooling to meet the target temperature.

Automation with Galaxy Wearables

By connecting the air conditioner with the Galaxy Watch series or Galaxy Ring[2] via SmartThings, users can seamlessly enjoy the benefits of the ‘Good Sleep’ mode without requiring manual adjustments via remotes. Once configured, whenever the wearable detects that the user has begun sleeping, it initiates the ‘Good Sleep’ mode accordingly. If the air conditioner was previously turned off, it will be switched on at the appropriate target temperature for ‘Good Sleep’. Alternatively, if it is already running but at too cold a temperature, it will adapt to a more comfortable sleeping temperature.

Samsung first attempted this connection back in 2018, before wearables had developed into the steady market of today. Members of the product planning team and software team pioneered the collaboration of wearables and home appliances. However, it was only in 2023 when this service properly became a feature. By then, the wearable market itself had grown, and it had matured enough that users even wore the devices to bed. Kyungju Lee, who took part in the project 6 years ago and now leads product planning for Room Air Conditioners, says, “We could see just by looking at friends and family around us, that the interest people had in the quality of their sleep had increased immensely. We felt that we needed to re-launch the feature we’d attempted in 2018. The right timing had come.”

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. together with the University of Michigan, today announced that the University of Michigan Human Performance & Sport Science

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. together with the University of Michigan, today announced that the University of Michigan Human Performance & Sport Science Center (HPSSC) — renowned for its integrated and comprehensive sport, exercise, and human performance-related research and education — has validated the high accuracy of Samsung Galaxy Watch’s fitness tracking features.

▲ Photo copyright: Regents of the University of Michigan. Eric Bronson/Michigan Photography.

HPSSC’s Michigan Performance Research Laboratory (MiPR) found a significant correlation between Galaxy Watch and the clinical and sport science reference devices’ measurement of heart rate, sweat loss, VO2 max and body fat percentage measurements, validating the reliability of Galaxy Watch’s monitoring capabilities. This partnership demonstrates how the collaboration between the two organisations makes advanced and precise fitness solutions to more people.

The MiPR studies verified the accuracy of Galaxy Watch’s fitness tracking features by monitoring key metrics from elite runners, including:

Heart rate: As the most commonly checked health metric during workouts, heart rate measures how hard the heart works during physical activity. Findings show an excellent 90% correlation with electrocardiogram equipment while running, the gold standard in heart rate measurement.

Sweat loss: Sweat loss estimates the amount of fluid lost during physical activity and helps guide proper hydration after workouts. The study found a 95% correlation for Galaxy Watch in assessing sweat loss over varying distances ranging from 2.5 km to 20 km.

VO2 max: Understanding how much oxygen the body absorbs during a workout helps individuals assess their fitness levels and set optimal goals and limits. The study demonstrated an 82% correlation, indicating acceptable alignment between Galaxy Watch and clinical-grade diagnostic equipment.

Body fat percentage: Measuring a person’s body fat percentage allows for a better understanding of physical health and fitness than tracking body weight alone. Galaxy Watch readings showed a 95% correlation with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) results, the standard diagnostic test for body composition using low-dose X-rays.

“We’re proud to be recognised by the renowned Michigan Performance Research Laboratory — their skilled researchers and expertise in wearable technology give us confidence in the accuracy of the Galaxy Watch’s fitness tracking capabilities,” said Dr. Hon Pak, Senior Vice President and Head of Digital Health Team, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. “We are committed to delivering precise and insightful fitness tracking experiences through strategic partnerships and advanced research.”

“Our partnership with Samsung exemplifies the power of combining industry-leading expertise with pioneering independent research at the academic level,” said Co-PIs Adam Lepley, MiPR director and associate director of HPSSC research. “Together, we can advance scientific discovery and provide information back to consumers that will enhance the use of Samsung’s technology. This synergy underscores the power of uniting academic excellence with industrial innovation, and we are grateful for this collaboration.”

“We are excited to continue our partnership with Samsung to ensure that innovations in wearable technology are accessible and accurate across all segments of the population,” said Kenneth Kozloff, HPSSC co-director. “HPSSC and MiPR are eager to unveil these outstanding outcomes that solidify our commitment to enhancing heart rate and health monitoring and are look forward to future collaborations.”

The following tips can enhance your fitness journey with the Galaxy Watch series, from setting personal goals to post-workout recovery:

Body composition[1]: Get a comprehensive snapshot of your body, including body fat percentage, body water content and skeletal muscle mass. Set personalised goals based on your current body status and track your progress.

Personalised heart rate zone: Creating a personalised heart rate zone tailored to your activities allows you to align your health and wellness objectives, and train at optimal intensity levels according to your physical capabilities.

VO2 max[2]: Gain deeper insight into your fitness levels by analysing how much oxygen your body uses during physical activity. VO2 max is widely regarded as the best indicator of cardiovascular endurance.

Sweat loss: After a run, measure your sweat loss and re-hydrate appropriately after each workout based on data for improved recovery.

[1] Body Composition is only supported in Samsung Galaxy Watch4 series and later released Galaxy Watch models. Body Composition should not be used if you have an implanted pacemaker or other implanted medical devices, or if you are pregnant. Any health-related information accessed through the device and application should not be treated as medical advice. Measurement results may not be accurate if you are under 20 years old. The measurements are for your personal reference only. Please consult a medical professional for advice.

[2] Accurate VO2 max reading requires running outdoors for at least 20 minutes with GPS on; consult user manual before use.
