Research conducted to launch Samsung’s latest tablet, the Galaxy Tab S10 FE, unveils a staggering 52% of families are planning journeys over the Easter weekend. The stats also reveal that on average, boredom strikes within just 43 minutes of a road trip. With the majority (43%) considering road trips to be journeys upwards of 2 hours, its clear entertainment becomes crucial before they’ve even reached the halfway point. 

The infamous phrase, “Are we there yet?” reigns supreme as one of the top causes of frustration on a family road trip (33%), heard an average of five times during a journey lasting more than 50 miles. Samsung’s “Are We There Yet?” Index pinpoints families in the West Midlands as the most impatient – 44% hear “Are we nearly there yet?” before the hour is up. And, families in the East of England are most likely to ask this more than 10 times on a typical road trip.  

But it’s not just the miles that are causing friction. Keeping younger passengers entertained (29%), unexpected road closures (38%) and complaints of boredom (35%) also play a big part. In fact, nearly a fifth (20%) admit that these frustrations cause at least two arguments per road trip. 

Father of three and Diversity member, Jordan Banjo, says: “As a dad of three, ‘are we there yet’ is a familiar soundtrack in my car. It’s not about keeping the kids quiet; it’s about making those long drives fun for everyone.

Stats revealed that other annoying phrases heard by adults included ‘I need the toilet’ (16%), ‘I’m bored’ (13%) and ‘I’m hungry’ (10%).  

When asked what would help improve the road trip experience, having an entertainment device (39%), plenty of snacks (50%) and frequent stops to take breaks (36%) topped the list. Of those who embarked on lengthy trips at least three times a year, 86% say access to Wi-Fi was crucial to the smooth running of a journey. This reached its highest point amongst Londoners, with 91% flagging online connection as an essential.  

Jordan Banjo shares his top tips for keeping the boredom at bay on long car journeys: 

• Plan frequent stops: Little legs need breaks! We always plan regular stops to stretch, grab snacks, and let the kids burn off some energy. 

• Creative entertainment: The Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE has been a game-changer for us. The S Pen allows my kids to draw and create, and we’ve found loads of educational apps that make learning fun. It stops the constant “Are we there yet?” questions.

Finding the Balance between Innovation and the Environment

Samsung is reimagining how Galaxy technology is designed and packaged to do more with less when it comes to our planet’s natural resources. For the last decade, we have worked to innovate high-performance components that are made with recycled materials.

We took an important step in 2022 when we incorporated recycled discarded fishing nets, also known as ghost nets, in the Galaxy S22 series. Recycled materials can now be found in all Galaxy mobile products, including smartphones, tablets, PCs and wearables^[1]. At the same time, we have expanded our use to a greater variety of materials, from several different types of plastics to metals and glass.

Galaxy S24 continues to scale the variety of recycled materials in Galaxy devices by applying recycled plastics, glass and aluminium to internal and external components^[2]. It also takes these efforts one step further. For the first time, Galaxy S24 features components made with recycled cobalt and rare earth elements^[3]. In Galaxy S24 Ultra, a minimum of 50% recycled cobalt was used in the battery^[4], and 100% recycled rare earth elements were incorporated into the speakers^[5].

Samsung has a long history of addressing the pervasive challenge of plastic waste through our recycled material innovations, and recycled plastics continue to play an important role in the Galaxy S24 series. The Galaxy S24 series maintains our use of recycled plastics sourced from discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles.

The recycled ocean-bound plastic^[6] material was created in partnership with global organisations who collected discarded fishing nets abandoned near the oceans. Together, we separated, cleaned and extruded the nets’ properties before optimising them into high-performance, recycled polyamide pellets. Similarly, the recycled polycarbonate and PET materials are sourced from discarded water barrels and PET bottles that we grind, filter and melt down with other additives. This process helps us transform these fragile resources into high-performance optimised materials that uphold Samsung’s state-of-the-art design and high-quality standards. We also teamed up with other organisations to upcycle discarded Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) that was generated from shoe manufacturing.

This is a culmination of our continued efforts with our partners to transform fragile plastic wastes into high performance material used in Galaxy devices. Through the Galaxy S24 series, we aim to use nearly 100 metric tons of recycled plastics^[7] by the end of 2024, which is equivalent to 10 million empty plastic bottles^[8].

When it comes to recycled metal, the Galaxy S24 series incorporates recycled aluminum^[9] that originates from scrap metal generated during manufacturing. The aluminum scrap is re-melted, filtered for impurities and then recycled to make components within Samsung’s product development process. The Galaxy S24 series has the potential to utilise around 110 metric tons of recycled aluminum by the end of 2024, which is the equivalent of 9 million soda cans^[10].

Additionally, the Galaxy S24 series comes in a packaging box made using 100% recycled paper material. By the end of 2024, we hope to use 2,760 metric tons of recycled paper, which is equivalent of 552 million pieces of A4 paper^[11]. If stacked on top of one another, that would be approximately the same height as 71 Burj Khalifas^[12], which is the tallest building in the world.

From the smallest components to the newest, most premium features, the Galaxy S24 series represents a significant stride in Samsung’s ongoing commitment to utilising recycled materials in its smartphones. This work could help us shift to more circular designs and build technology that supports a more sustainable future.

London, UK – 20th November 2020 – New research released by Samsung Electronics UK Ltd. has revealed that Brits are bamboozled when it comes to their laundry detergent. The survey found that 58% of people are confused about how much to use and only 24% of people regularly adjust the amount of detergent they dispense based on the weight of their wash load.

The poll of 2,000 UK adults also revealed that while two thirds of Brits (66%) use a liquid or powder detergent, over half are unsure about what quantity they should be using, while 87% admit that they tend to guess how much to use. Clearly, dosing is a real concern, as 66% of those who use capsules, do so because it saves them from deciphering how much detergent they need to dispense.

But what’s the problem with using too much or too little laundry detergent?

Firstly, expense. Brits believe they are spending an average of £78.31 a year on laundry detergent -and while only 14% think they are spending more than they need to, this is actually nearly double what the average household should be spending[1]. Guesstimating then, is clearly not the most economical way of monitoring detergent volume and more than a third (35%) of those surveyed did agree that they think they use too much detergent. The amount should be calculated in proportion to the weight of the wash, however less than a quarter of Brits say they regularly do this. This means that many are likely to be throwing their money down the plughole.

Damage is also an unwelcome side effect of using too much detergent – to our clothes, our washing machine and our skin! Almost half of people surveyed (49%) believe it can damage their washing machine, while 19% of people said over-dosing detergent has damaged and stained their clothing in the past. Most concerning though, is the 72% of people who believe that too much detergent can be detrimental to skin, with many citing it as the cause of unwelcome reactions such as itching and rashes.

“We’ve always known that consumers find detergent dosing confusing, causing them to default to easy alternatives like capsules or just guessing how much to dispense; but there are environmental and economic impacts of doing so,” explains Ruth Storey, Head of Marketing, Home Appliances, Samsung Electronics UK Ltd.

“We’ve listened to customers’ feedback and are proud to have developed an Auto Dose feature which uses sensors to determine the weight of the wash load which in turn adjusts the time, detergent volume and water usage automatically. By taking a load of people’s minds, we can help consumers save time and money on their domestic responsibilities.”

Samsung’s top of the line Washing Machines (WW9800 series) and Washer Dryers (WD9800 series) also have the Auto Optimal Wash feature which is intelligent enough to assess the level of soil within the load. For heavy soiling, it can automatically add more detergent towards the end of the wash cycle, if necessary, adjusting the wash time accordingly in the process.
