LONDON, UK – 26th May, 2023 – Samsung Electronics Co. (UK) Ltd has announced the winners of its third national Solve for Tomorrow Competition. This competition seeks to give young people in the UK & Ireland the opportunity to gain skills and receive top-tier advice from leading industry experts, giving them a roadmap for the future, and a creative space to develop exciting new technology for good.

In the 16-18 category, Joseph Birch from Bromley, 16, Ben Sindall from Epsom, 16, and Liam Bridgman from Beckenham, 17, were awarded 1st place with OLEO, a device that removes microplastics from polluted water using waste cooking oil from fast food chains and restaurants.

Kiara Taylor, 24, from Sandhurst, Berkshire, was awarded 1st place in the 18-25 category with ReGrow, which repurposes e-waste to make a low-cost irrigation system aimed at farmers in Ghana to help them increase their crop yield.

Joseph, who was delighted to be part of the team that won the 16-18 category, said he wanted to turn his passionate views on microplastic into a reality.

He said: “We really hope we can further develop our idea and create an actual real-life product and business. We’ve worked with incredible people, like our mentor and some of the amazing people at Samsung – it has been such a great experience and we hope that continues.”

His teammate Liam added: “We think tech in the future will play an imperative role in how everyone lives their lives. If you look at the development even over the last 20 years with the first smartphone, all the way to the phones we have now, it’s grown at such as exponential rate, and it’s just going to keep evolving into new areas we haven’t seen yet.”

Kiara was thrilled to be crowned the winner of the 18-25 category and said: “This competition will allow me to develop my idea further, which will involve second round prototyping and testing, and looking at how to actually implement it in Ghana, which is my target country, which is obviously different to the UK, so that will be really interesting.

“I learned how to build a business, and especially as a young person, I don’t have that much industry experience, so it was really helpful meeting the mentors and experts who have done it already, and also meeting the other contestants who are all in the same boat as you.”

(Left to right) Joseph Birch, Ben Sindall and Liam Bridgman were awarded first place with OLEO in the 16-18 category

London, UK – 25th May 2020 –Samsung Electronics UK Ltd. today released new research that shows how Brits have become a budding nation of amateur chefs in recent weeks.

The poll of 1,500 UK adults shows how cooking has risen in popularity, with nearly half of respondents (49%) saying that they are currently cooking more than usual. From batch cooking and basic baking through to not-so-perfect puddings, Brits are upping the ante in the kitchen and experimenting more with new recipes. Cakes top the list of foods that Brits are experimenting with (47%), followed by main meals (42%) with puddings and desserts coming in third at 29% – and when it comes to these main meals Brits are really mixing it up!

According to the research the nation has been cooking a variety of different dishes in recent weeks. While British food is still often the order of the day with 66% saying that they are cooking more traditional recipes, 53% are also cooking more Italian food and 32% more Indian. The top five cuisines are then completed by Chinese (27%) and Mediterranean (23%). But just why are we getting more creative in the kitchen?

“I think that cooking and baking is something that lots of people want to do more of, but it is difficult to find the time. In recent weeks that has clearly changed, so I’m not surprised that people are doing more of it,” explains Bake Off star and 2019 winner David Atherton. “Cooking is also a fantastic thing to turn to when you need a distraction, whether it’s an elaborate cake or flavoursome meal, because the art of cooking can be totally absorbing. Personally, I find it helps me to escape from reality and get some much-needed headspace. It’s also something you can get really creative with, plus it has a tangible result – when your food comes out the oven you get a real sense of achievement, as though you’ve done something productive with your time. The best bit by far is that you can then reward yourself by eating your creation!”

It’s clear that many Brits are also recognising the benefits of keeping calm and cooking on, with three quarters saying that they hope to continue cooking more in future.

The growing phenomenon is only serving to reinforce that the kitchen really is the heart of the home, with almost 3 in 5 Brits agreeing that they believe this to be true. Similarly, 62% agree that the oven specifically is the hero of the kitchen, making it by default, the unsung hero of the home!

Food is also helping to bring the household together during these times, with 48% of multiple person households saying that they are sitting down to eat together more often. But while they may be eating at the same time, they are not necessarily eating the same meals. In fact, 30% are cooking more than one main meal a day to cater to different taste preferences, while 20% are cooking more than one main meal due to having different dietary requirements within their household. Fortunately, with appliances such as the Samsung Dual Cook Flex oven, this needn’t present too much of a problem.

“People often want to cook more than one thing at a time, whether that’s multiple courses, different meals due to taste preferences or dietary requirements, or because they are batch cooking multiple meals at one time,” explains Ruth Storey, Head of Marketing, Home Appliances, Samsung Electronics UK Ltd. “That’s why Samsung has developed its Dual Cook Flex range which gives you the ultimate flexibility in the kitchen. Offering the opportunity to divide the oven into two, so you can steam your fish or bake your cake all in the same oven at the same time, with no transfer of odours or tastes.”

Top 5 cuisines that Brits are cooking more of

Samsung Announces New SmartThings Hub and Supporting Devices To Open Up The Connected Home

SmartThings Hub and sensors refreshed with sleek design, wireless connectivity, and improved performance

LONDON, UK – 26 September 2018 – Samsung Electronics UK today announced the newest devices in its SmartThings range of products. The new SmartThings Hub and sensors connect simply and intuitively to the Samsung SmartThings platform, enabling beginners and experts alike to realise their smart home vision.

The improvements to the new range of SmartThings devices have been inspired by the feedback from consumers since SmartThings launched in the UK in 2015, The overall design of the hub and each sensor has been improved to blend in with the style of your home, and includes a range of new features to make entering the Smart Home market more accessible than ever.

“As more people embrace a connected lifestyle, we’re focused on creating an experience that makes smart living simple, accessible and intelligent,” said Teg Dosanjh – Director of IOT, MDE & SmartThings, UK. “With SmartThings, we’re delivering an open platform that seamlessly brings together connected devices and sensors to give our consumers peace of mind and make their lives easier, not more complicated.”

SmartThings Hub

With its new wireless solution, the SmartThings Hub can now be placed anywhere in the home – giving you the flexibility to find the optimum spot without impacting your décor. All smart devices within the home can be controlled through the one SmartThings app, which is available on both Android and iOS, plus Samsung Smart TV’s and Family Hub refrigeration range.

With an open platform, SmartThings works with the biggest range of smart home brands – simply look for the ‘works with SmartThings’ logo. It will even connect with all voice assistants, whether you prefer Samsung Bixby, Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant you can tailor your smart home to you.

The newly improved SmartThings Hub also allows you to:

Receive alerts and notifications from connected devices wherever you are when something unexpected happens in your home. You will know just in an instant if there is a leak or intrusion, and even better you will never have to worry about leaving anything on accidently like your oven, iron or hair straighteners

Manage connected devices in your home with SmartThings scenes for Good Morning, Goodbye and Good Night. For example, with a single tap to the Good Night scene on your app, you can arm your security alarm, lock the doors, turn off the TV and lights, activate motion sensors and link them to your security camera to start recording, change the temperature, and have a peaceful sleep knowing SmartThings is protecting your home.

Use Automations which can control devices and run scenes whenever certain conditions are met. Automate connected devices in your home and set them to turn on or off when doors are opened, as people come and go, and much more.

Control connected devices in your home with voice commands using SmartThings and Samsung Bixby, Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.

Multipurpose Sensor

The sensor opens up a world of possibilities, putting you in control of the things you want to monitor in your home. Consisting of two independent pieces, it works by alerting if you if one sensor is moved away from the other. You no longer have to worry if you’ve left your doors or windows open when you’re not home, and even removes the pain of fumbling for the light switch as you can set connected lights to turn on and off as you open doors, windows and even cupboards.

Motion Sensor

Take your home security to the next level with the new Motion Sensor, which lets you know if there’s any movement in your home. The sensor can be placed in the most challenging of areas thanks to a magnetic ball mount, and allows you to adjust the sensor angle up to 120 degrees to detect motion in its field of view.

After you’ve established a routine with the sensor you can set connected devices to turn on and off as you come and go.

Water Leak Sensor

The sensor will monitor for any moisture and let you know when a leak is detected, but most importantly turn off connected devices when it is, whether it’s your dishwasher or washing machine.

The Button

Samsung also announces a new addition to the SmartThings range, the Button, which allows you to control lights, electronics, small appliances and monitor temperature at the touch of a button. You can customise actions with a single or double tap, or long press to set multiple lights, electronics, and small appliances to turn on and off.

The upgraded SmartThings Hub and sensors will be available both in store and online at several leading UK retailers as well as online at Samsung.com.

LONDON, England – June 15, 2018 – Today, Samsung Electronics and Argent announced an agreement to lease a 20,000 sq. ft. showcase space at Coal Drops Yard, the new Heatherwick Studio-designed shopping and lifestyle district in King’s Cross.

Located between two reimagined Victorian coal drops, in a top floor dual-aspect space crowned by Heatherwick Studio’s landmark ‘kissing’ rooftops, Samsung KX LDN sits at the very centre of Coal Drops Yard.

Positioned as an important consumer touch point, Samsung KX LDN will bring the latest technologies to life with curated experiences. The place will also showcase how multiple Samsung devices and services come together to deliver a complete and harmonized experience; making consumers lives easier, more convenient, and more efficient. The showcase space represents a number of unique features designed specifically for this space, envisaged as the ultimate creative and digital playground within which Samsung will present its latest and greatest technology and become the centre of excellence for customer care.

Originally London’s primary coal store, Coal Drops Yard was established in 1850 to handle the eight million tonnes of coal delivered to the capital each year. The original structures have been reinvented by the acclaimed Heatherwick Studio, which has interwoven a striking contemporary design with the surviving grand brick viaducts, cobbled streets and rich ironwork of the Victorian coal drops situated on the site. At Samsung KX LDN, Coal Drops Yard’s original exposed brick work will be maintained, combined with the vibrancy of Samsung’s technology.

The new store joins an expanding line-up of leading retailers that include Paul Smith, Tom Dixon, Cubitts, Manifesto, Cheaney, Form+ Thread and Universal Works – as well as restaurants Barrafina, Casa Pastor and wine bar The Drop – that will open at Coal Drops Yard, which will house 100,000 sq. ft. of shops and restaurants.

Younghee Lee, CMO of Samsung Electronics said: “This flagship space in the heart of Coal Drops Yard will embody the spirit and creativity of our brand and will allow visitors to see, hear, and experience all we have to offer. Samsung KX LDN represents our brand philosophy of ‘Do What You Can’t’ on a remarkable scale, pushing our imagination, design and cultural environment to the edge of what’s possible. I am excited to have this showcase to grow as a true landmark in London.”

Craig White, Project Director at Argent, said: “We are incredibly excited to welcome Samsung to Coal Drops Yard. Their signing represents a real statement of intent; a first-of-a-kind for the UK, in the headline space at Coal Drops Yard. Samsung is pushing the boundaries to create something new, mirroring the approach that has informed our vision for Coal Drops Yard. We look forward to welcoming visitors from London, the UK and the rest of the world – it’s going to be very special.”

Anna Strongman, Partner at Argent, said: “We’ve long described Samsung’s space as London’s greatest shop window, a store with unbounded potential to deliver an experience unlike any other. Samsung’s embrace of the Coal Drops Yard ethos has been vital to creating this unique concept, working with Heatherwick Studio’s striking design to form an experience-led store that represents both the present and future of retail. Samsung is a global leader – a company at the top of its game – and they join a very special mix of like-minded shopkeepers, both established and emerging, that are now confirmed to open at Coal Drops Yard.”

King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership was advised by Hanover Green and Nash Bond.

New 970 series enables high-performance computing through enhanced speed, exceptional endurance and system design flexibility

SEOUL, Korea – April 24, 2018 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., today introduced the Samsung 970 PRO and EVO, the third generation of its industry-leading consumer solid state drive (SSD) lineup. Having led the market with the first consumer-focused NVMe SSD in 2015, Samsung continues to push the performance barriers with this latest generation of SSDs that are built for tech enthusiasts and professionals so that they can enjoy higher bandwidth for intensive workloads on PCs and workstations. The 970 PRO V-NAND M.2 is available for £275.79 for the 512GB version and £526.79 for the 1TB version. The 970 EVO V-NAND M.2 is available for £100.79 for 250GB, £193.79 for the 500GB version, £375.79 for the 1TB version and £709.99 for the 2TB version.

“Samsung has led the NVMe SSD industry since its inception, and the company continues to define the latest standards of consumer storage with unprecedented performance of the 970 PRO and EVO SSDs,” said Un-Soo Kim, senior vice president of Brand Product Marketing, Memory Business at Samsung Electronics. “The 970 series sets a new bar in all aspects for the NVMe SSD market with groundbreaking performance, superior reliability and best-in-class capacity.”

The Samsung 970 PRO and EVO are designed based on the M.2 form factor standard and with the latest PCIe Gen 3×4 lane interface. The 970 series maximizes the potential of NVMe bandwidth, delivering unparalleled performance for processing large volumes of data, including 3D, 4K graphics work, high-end games and data analytics.

The 970 PRO enables sequential read speed of up to 3,500 MB/s and sequential write speed of up to 2,700 MB/s[1], while the EVO features sequential read speed of up to 3,500 MB/s and sequential write speed of up to 2,500 MB/s[2]. The sequential write speeds represent an enhancement of up to 30 percent over the previous generation[3], thanks to Samsung’s latest V-NAND technology and the newly designed Phoenix controller. The 970 EVO, in particular, utilizes the Intelligent TurboWrite technology, which uses a large buffer size of up to 78GB[4] to enable faster write speeds.

In addition to the advancements in performance levels, the 970 PRO and EVO deliver exceptional endurance and reliability. Featuring a five-year warranty[5], or up to 1,200 terabytes written[6] – 50 percent higher than those provided for the previous generation[7] – the 970 PRO and EVO are built to last. The Dynamic Thermal Guard technology safeguards against overheating by automatically monitoring and maintaining optimal operating temperatures, while a heat spreader and new nickel-coated controller further lower the SSD temperatures.

The 970 PRO and EVO also provide greater system design flexibility for the high-performance computing systems. Offering a variety of high capacity options in a compact M.2 form factor – including the single-sided 2TB EVO model – the 970 series enables convenient storage expansion across a wide range of computing devices.

The 970 EVO will be offered in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB[8] capacities, and the 970 PRO in 512GB and 1TB capacities. The 970 PRO and EVO will be available for purchase worldwide starting May 7, 2018, with manufacturer’s suggested retail prices starting at $329.99 and $119.99 USD, respectively.

New research of 2,000 adults, commissioned by Samsung to celebrate the launch of its Galaxy S9, has shown that more than half of Brits believe it’s important to capture the perfect photograph, and the majority would like to improve the low-light performance of their phone’s camera. Currently, more than two in five spend time editing images taken in low lighting, and more than six in 10 admit they delete images straight away because it’s too dark.

The new Galaxy S9 and S9+, on general sale from 16 March, has an advanced, reimagined camera to ensure users don’t miss a moment – enabling them to capture their epic every day.

Additionally, adults admitted almost 40% of their snaps will be un-usable as a result of low lighting, blurring or because the subject was too far away.

It’s no secret that good lighting is the answer to any great photo but often, photos are taken in less-than-ideal lighting conditions. Most smartphone cameras have a fixed aperture that can’t adjust to low or bright lighting environments, resulting in grainy or washed out pictures. Similar to the way the iris of a human eye expands and contracts, Samsung’s Dual Aperture[1] (F1.5/ F2.4) automatically lets in more light when it’s dark and less light when it’s too bright, taking photos that are crisp and clear.

A Samsung spokesperson said: “We have reimagined the camera on the Galaxy S9/+ to enable our fans to capture the epic every day. The incredible dual aperture lens transforms low light photography, allowing users to get the perfect shot first time, so that they can live in the moment.”

There is a cost to pursuing the perfect shot, as 43% of respondents felt they missed out on the ‘true’ experience by spending too much time taking pictures.

As well as an enhanced low-light camera, the S9 benefits from:

Super Slow-mo: Make every day moments epic with dynamic, slow-motion video that captures 960 frames per second. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ also offers automatic Motion Detection, an intelligent feature that detects movement in the frame and automatically begins to record – all users have to do is set up the shot.

AR Emoji: Samsung lets users create an emoji that looks, sounds and acts like them. AR Emoji uses a data-based machine learning algorithm, which analyses a 2D image of the user and maps out more than 100 facial features to create a 3D model that reflects and imitates expressions, like winks and nods, for true personalisation.

Bixby: Samsung’s intelligence platform, integrated into the camera, uses augmented reality and deep learning technologies to provide helpful information about a user’s surroundings.

[1] The Dual Aperture supports F1.5 mode and F2.4 mode. Dual Aperture is installed on the rear camera (Galaxy S9) and rear wide-camera (Galaxy S9+)

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. pushes the boundaries of traditional advertising campaigns and marketing engagements with a spectacular showcase at the iconic

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. pushes the boundaries of traditional advertising campaigns and marketing engagements with a spectacular showcase at the iconic Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The new Galaxy S9 and S9+—unveiled at Samsung Unpacked in Barcelona on February 25, 2018 with advanced, redesigned camera—will be featured in a display of LED lights and multi-sensory experiences to capture the attention of consumers worldwide and demonstrate its commitment to meaningful innovation that defies barriers. Samsung Electronics is the first technology brand that will be represented on Burj Khalifa’s LED Façade.

The Burj Khalifa, a global icon, garners attention as a popular gathering place and for its amazing LED display, which has been the centre of attraction of the ‘Light Up 2018’ spectacle. Samsung will project its Galaxy S9 and S9+ campaign, The Camera. Reimagined on the iconic landmark five times from March 2-3. The company will also host an on-the-ground consumer event with Product Experience Zones that allow consumers to explore new advanced visual and audio capabilities of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ first-hand. At activation stands, consumers can create their own personalized AR Emoji, test out the low-light functionality of the Galaxy’s reimagined camera in a mirrored room and capture the celebration with Super Slow-mo video capabilities at Samsung’s confetti booth.

The campaign embraces the spirit of Samsung’s brand manifesto, “Do What You Can’t” (DWYC)—a call to defy barriers and do what can’t be done – and introduces consumers to the Galaxy S9 and S9+ through immersive experiences, media, TV commercials and digital content. Samsung is creating products, services and experiences that are made for the way consumers express themselves and discover hidden moments.

“Staying true to our heritage of relentless innovation, this campaign is another example of how Samsung is continuously pushing the boundaries of what’s possible – just like we do with our products and services,” said YH Lee, Global Chief Marketing Officer of Samsung Electronics. “Through the spectacular Burj Khalifa ‘Light Up’ show, multi-sensory engagement experiences, and the new Galaxy S9 and S9+, we are tapping in to the way consumers communicate, engage and experience the world today.”

In addition to the takeover in Dubai, Samsung will launch OOH activations at landmarks and high-traffic areas in major global markets, where consumers can experience the Galaxy S9 and S9+, including the advanced camera features that can catch a fleeting moment, high-quality audio and intelligent connectivity that allows users to seamlessly manage all facets of their social lifestyle.

Spectacular Showcase Schedule

Samsung will project its Galaxy S9 and S9+ campaign on the iconic landmark five times from 19:57 GST on March 2 through 20:27 GST on March 3.
