Today’s world is one of unprecedented innovation and rapidly evolving technology. It’s an era of endless possibilities, coupled with a new set of risks for cybersecurity and privacy. At Samsung Electronics, we recognise that as we enter these uncharted territories, we must be prepared for potential threats that may arise. That’s why we stay deeply attuned to the ever-changing security landscape and champion a dynamic approach to enterprise security.

The cybersecurity threats of today affect everyone, from consumers to businesses. Enterprise device fleets must be resilient against attacks of all kinds, from suspicious URLs, insider employee threats and malware, to emerging risks associated with AI usage in the workplace, including prompt injection and sensitive data leaks. As a growing number of employees across industries, from corporate offices to the frontlines, use devices to access enterprise networks and resources, these threats not only present significant security risks but may also lead to a substantial financial toll on businesses.

Enterprise cybersecurity incidents can arise across operations. However, the International Data Corporation (IDC)[1] found that an overwhelming 70 percent of successful breaches originate from endpoints: the devices that connect to networks like phones, laptops and tablets. Unfortunately, in today’s security operations landscape, IT administrators have much less visibility into mobile devices compared to PCs and servers. With mobile devices now being the most common method of employee network access, this has to change. A systematic, comprehensive approach is critical to ensuring seamless mobile capabilities and uncompromising cyber-protection. At Samsung, we’re setting a new standard for mobile enterprise security by committing to a collaborative Zero Trust strategy for endpoints in partnership with market leaders.

Core Principles for Zero Trust Endpoint Security

Samsung’s legacy of innovation is built upon our deep understanding of users. We’re constantly listening to feedback from consumers and businesses, anticipating the evolution of mobile technology. This is what enables us to pioneer industry-first solutions for consumers and businesses alike. As the Head of the Global Mobile B2B Team, I’m especially proud of how we’ve led the way in critical areas that deliver value to enterprises across the board. From advancing hardware-backed device attestation and threat detection to fully embracing the security principles of Zero Trust, we are constantly striving to provide our customers with mobile devices and solutions that exceed their cybersecurity requirements.

Zero Trust is a security framework that replaces implicit trust with explicit trust by continuously assessing security threats, risk and trust levels based on context. The current security solutions market is dominated by network-centric Zero Trust solutions that focus on securing access at the network edge. Unfortunately, this approach by itself neglects a critical blind spot: the endpoint. Endpoints have the largest attack surface and are the most challenging IT assets to protect against cyberattacks. In most cases, they are the most vulnerable points in an organisation’s IT ecosystem.

Zero Trust principles for endpoints, when realised correctly, ensure that access requests from endpoints are handled based on context that correlates with the device’s security and the user’s needs, and are continuously verified in real time. Although there is no definitive list of core principles behind Zero Trust endpoint protection, the following principles are the most commonly adopted:

“Never trust, always verify” approach for devices: Devices should no longer be implicitly trusted just because they are within the network boundary. Instead, each device needs to prove its trustworthiness before being granted access.

Continuous risk assessment and enforcement: Endpoint protection must be agile and ready to adapt to constantly changing risk conditions. This means continuously evaluating context, such as location, time of access and the device’s security threats, and dynamically adjusting security policies accordingly. Suspicious activity needs to be addressed through enforcement actions such as access restrictions or complete isolation.

Restricted privileges and narrowly scoped access: Endpoints must enforce access control in real time based on context while ensuring privileges are granted dynamically with a narrow scope.

Incorporation of user identity, device posture and behavioural signals: A Zero Trust-compliant solution needs to make granular and informed trust decisions to enforce tight access controls. To enable such decisions, Zero Trust’s continuous evaluation of context integrates user identity, device threats and behavioral signals.

While the Zero Trust security strategy is growing in adoption, Samsung is fully embracing it. By doing so, we are helping to protect the most vulnerable points in an organisation’s IT landscape. Risks related to endpoint security are constantly increasing as cloud-based applications, Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programs and remote work prevail in the modern workplace environment. Samsung recognises the critical nature of this problem and is proactively addressing it in collaboration with partners.

Innovation and Collaboration for Cybersecurity at Every Level

How does this work in practice? From the hardware level and all the way to the operating system and secure interface, Zero Trust security principles are built into the architecture of Samsung Galaxy devices, enhancing cyber protection at every layer while intuitively integrating with a business’s existing security infrastructure. Together, these practices empower enterprises to administer proper threat detection and responses more securely and reliably.

At Samsung, we recognise that security is a collective effort. It is only through open collaboration with partners that we can bring the most advanced solutions to our customers. In my time at Samsung, we’ve made extensive strides in bringing forth versatile, optimised and secure solutions[2] for enterprises of all kinds.

In 2024, we integrated Samsung Knox — our defence-grade, multilayer security management platform — with Cisco Secure Access, an innovative Security Service Edge solution. This collaboration delivers a secure and flexible employee access experience, enabling organisations to verify user identity, device threats and context before granting access.

We also have a strong partnership with Microsoft, defined by a shared vision of reimagining mobile device security for business customers. The first step of this strategic plan began in 2023, when we integrated Samsung Knox with Microsoft Intune, creating the industry’s first on-device mobile hardware-backed device attestation solution that works equally well on both company and personal devices. This solution is now enabled by default in all new Android App Protection Policies, empowering organisations to bolster the security posture of all Samsung devices in their fleet. In yet another step forward in our partnership with Microsoft, Samsung has become the industry’s first mobile manufacturer to offer a direct-to-security operations centre (SOC) connector. This was achieved through the integration of Knox Asset Intelligence [3] and Microsoft Sentinel, a scalable, cloud-native security information and event management (SIEM) solution. This integration delivers unprecedented visibility into mobile security threats, providing centralised monitoring and protection across enterprise device fleets.

Working together with partners, Samsung is addressing key challenges in multiple areas — securing mobile devices, minimising damage from potential attacks and empowering employees to work efficiently and effectively without cybersecurity concerns getting in their way.

Holistic Security for Enhanced Privacy

We’re constantly innovating, refining and developing Samsung Knox solutions in order to bring our customers enhanced control, greater transparency and better protection against cyber threats.

By embodying Zero Trust as a core pillar of Samsung Knox, every measure is being taken to help secure mobile devices and data. At the same time, Samsung is breaking new ground with first-to-market solutions by constantly keeping a pulse on the ever-changing threat landscape.

As threats become increasingly complex with AI and hyperconnectivity taking centre stage, security and privacy are more important now than ever before. Today’s business landscape is constantly being threatened by an increasing volume of cyberattacks that aim to exploit IT vulnerabilities, with mobile devices and other endpoints quickly becoming prime targets.

That’s why Samsung is working with market-leading companies to provide cybersecurity solutions that work seamlessly with existing infrastructure, offering true end-to-end protection. These collaborative solutions are a testament to our commitment to not only adhere to industry standards but to also drive their continued development when it comes to Zero Trust endpoint security. This is just the beginning.

Samsung Electronics (UK) Limited has announced it is partnering with Eco-Bos, to deliver pioneering smart home technology that drives down carbon emissions and increases energy efficiencies for the West Carclaze Garden Village in Cornwall. Residents in West Carclaze can enjoy lower energy bills and effortless control of their living environment, thanks to the Samsung SmartThings platform that lets them choose how to manage heating, lighting, security, and appliances all from a single app.

One of the UK’s first Garden Villages the 1,500 homes set within 500 acres, 350 which are a Country Park, in West Carclaze, places wellbeing and innovation at its core, providing homes that are highly energy efficient and designed to take full advantage of new technologies and innovative materials. The development also includes a 7.5 MW onsite solar farm to support renewable energy supply. Critically, West Carclaze homes are rated EPC A, a rating achieved by only 0.3% of homes in the UK in an area noted as one of the least energy efficient counties in the UK*.

West Carclaze residents will benefit from this pioneering development, with each household saving both time and money through the improvements. Community residents can expect to generate a profit of up to £1,779, based on SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) calculations as outlined in the Predictive Energy Assessment from the Elmhurst Energy Report. Comparatively, a typical UK family household’s electricity and gas bill is approximately £1,719.45 per year, highlighting the potential for significant financial savings of up to £3,498 per year.[1]

As part of the collaboration, Samsung will provide its smart devices and appliances to each of the remaining 1,500 homes. Every property will come equipped as standard with a Samsung Heat Pump, Climate Hub, Solar PV as well as smart devices to handle everyday tasks across cooking, laundry, and dishwashing. All connected and managed in one simple interface via Samsung’s SmartThings[2] app, available on Android or iOS. The open ecosystem gives residents the ability to connect more than 350 partner brands within their home, including Amazon Alexa, Philips Hue and many other devices which be tailored based on each residents’ evolving needs.

Thanks to Samsung’s SmartThings platform and app, residents can seamlessly manage everyday tasks and benefit from SmartThings’ AI Energy Mode. This automatically switches appliances such as washing machines, fridge freezers and ovens to save energy through intelligent automation and learning capabilities within the appliances. For example a Samsung washing machine could reduce energy use by up to 20%[3] by simply switching on AI Energy Mode. By empowering residents to optimise their energy use and automate everyday routines, the tech at the heart of West Carclaze Garden Village will help create a more efficient community where residents can enjoy lower running costs of their home through reduced energy usage.

Mark Seaman, Head of Samsung B2B Integrated Offering Team, commented: “We know that people want homes that are more affordable to run and easier to live in. By partnering with Eco-Bos, we’re making it possible for residents to enjoy real savings on their energy bills, and giving them the opportunity to gain time back for themselves through the convenience and benefits of connected living.

“For developers, this collaboration shows that building tech-enabled communities is achievable today, meeting both new regulations and the needs of modern homeowners. We’re excited to help set a new standard for what home life can be, and we hope West Carclaze will inspire others to follow.”

Dorian Beresford, Chief Development Officer at Eco-Bos added: “Our collaboration with Samsung shows what’s possible when innovation and technology combine to serve people, not just performance. The future of housing must be cleaner, smarter, and more adaptable to people’s lives — with homes that work for people, not the other way around.

“This project brings that vision to life. Every home is designed to give back more than it takes — in energy, comfort, and quality of life. It’s proof that carbon-positive living isn’t a dream for tomorrow; it’s happening today.”

LONDON, UK – Fax machines, Rolodexes and floppy disks have been consigned to the annals of work-life history according to a new survey released today, which shines a spotlight on the evolution of the workplace.

The study of 2,000 UK office workers suggests that the traditional office of the 90s, as popularised in the sitcom of the same name, would be unrecognisable to office workers in 2025.

Landline phones, business card holders and even sticky notes are among the traditional office staples considered to be outdated in today’s workplace, while correction fluids – once deemed an essential part of office life – are also on their way out.

The poll, commissioned by Samsung to launch their new Galaxy Z Fold7 Enterprise Edition, a business foldable phone enhanced with AI features, found as few as one in ten Brits now make all their work calls from an office landline, with 52% of Brits saying their smartphone functions as a portable office.

It also revealed that almost two-thirds (62%) say working from a mobile phone has improved their ability to multitask, with 50% saying they begin their workday on the commute on at least some, if not all, the days they travel in to work.

Alongside the traditional office items that have been relegated to the past, the research also found that most work environments have undergone a period of modernisation, with comfortable seating areas (41%), relaxation spaces (39%) and collaboration pods (23%) becoming increasingly common as companies prioritise employee wellbeing.

When it comes to the modern working week, a meagre 37% of Brits now have fully office-based jobs, with just under one in five (18%) saying they split their time 50/50 between the office and home. A further 21% say they mainly work remotely.

As such, only 37% of UK office workers say they now have assigned seats or desk space at work, with over a quarter (26%) hotdesking instead.

Annika Bizon, Mobile Experience VP of Product and Marketing at Samsung UK&I, said:

“Thanks to cutting-edge technology, the modern office looks nothing like it did 25 years ago. Today’s professionals don’t work in one place or on one schedule, and their tech shouldn’t be confined to any restraints either. The Galaxy Z Fold7 is designed for the professional who works from anywhere – whether that’s a co-working space, their kitchen table, or the train to an important meeting. It’s your meeting room, notepad and your presentation screen all folded into one device; a complete mobile office built for modern working demands.”

Meanwhile, the gig economy has transformed career expectations with almost two in five (37%) workers now having a ‘side hustle’ as people focus on multiple careers simultaneously.

With more digital technology being used in the workplace, 61% of office workers have received employee training when it comes to using evolving software. However, more than one in ten (12%) of respondents aged 50+ admitted to struggling to incorporate innovative software into their working lives.

The Galaxy Z Fold7 is Samsung’s thinnest and lightest foldable yet, and gives workers the ability to flex the way they work. For example, having multiple apps open simultaneously on the device or using their voice for seamless action across apps with Google Gemini[1], like adding the time & location of events instantly into their calendar. Featuring Galaxy AI[2] for translation, call transcription and note-taking support, it’s like a portable office and executive assistant all in one.

Employees can quickly validate credentials, process transactions and manage assets without any additional hardware, enhancing efficiency in industries where speed and security are critical.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced the latest Onyx (ICD model) cinema LED screen at CinemaCon 2025, marking a new era for cinema display technology. Building on its legacy as a cinema LED pioneer, which began in 2017, Samsung is setting new standards with unmatched picture quality, industry-leading reliability and expanded screen scalability to meet the evolving needs of theatres worldwide.

“The cinema industry is shifting its focus towards delivering a more immersive and visually captivating experience,” said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “With Onyx, Samsung delivers not only the highest-quality visuals but also the flexibility that allows theatres to redefine the movie-going experience and cater to evolving audience expectations.”

Brighter, Bolder and More Immersive: The Future of Cinema is Here

As the world’s first DCI-certified[1] cinema LED display, Samsung Onyx delivers an unparalleled cinematic experience with true black levels, infinite contrast ratio and exceptional colour accuracy. The screen is capable of supporting frame rates up to 4K 120Hz,[2] delivering ultra-smooth motion and razor-sharp details.

Every auditorium has unique dimensions, and screen size requirements vary from theater to theater. To accommodate this, Onyx offers four standard sizes[3] and additional flexible scaling options, allowing theaters to maximize their available space and present films in the largest possible format without compromising image quality:

5 metres (16ft) – Ideal for boutique and smaller-format theatres (Pixel pitch: 1.25mm)

10 metres (33ft) – The industry standard for premium cinemas (Pixel pitch: 2.5mm)

14 metres (46ft) – A versatile format that delivers an impressive, large-scale cinematic experience (Pixel pitch: 3.3mm)

20 metres (66ft) – A large-format solution for premium auditoriums (Pixel pitch: 5.0mm)

Samsung Onyx cinema LED screens natively support both scope (2.39:1) and flat (1.85:1) aspect ratios, ensuring films are displayed in their intended formats without the need for additional adjustments. When scaling beyond standard sizes, Onyx maintains both aspect ratios while maximising the screen size, allowing content to expand proportionally without distortion.

Unlike traditional projectors, which can appear dim in larger theatres and struggle with washed-out colours in bright scenes, Onyx’s enhanced brightness ensures richer details in shadows, more intense highlights and superior colour accuracy across the entire spectrum. Powered by Samsung’s HDR technology, Onyx reaches peak brightness levels of 300 nits (87.6fL) — six times brighter than conventional cinema standards — allowing even the brightest details to remain clear and visible.[4] As a result, high-brightness scenes retain their full impact, rather than appearing washed out or overexposed.

With its industry-leading brightness and precision, Onyx enables clear and vivid playback even in brightly lit environments, making it ideal for alternative content such as live sports, concerts, gaming events, and corporate presentations. This allows theaters to deliver a premium viewing experience beyond traditional movie screenings.

Built for Reliability and Seamless Integration

Onyx is built for long-term performance, offering the industry’s first and longest 10-years warranty for cinema LED,[5] setting a new benchmark for reliability in cinema display technology. This extended coverage helps reduce total cost of ownership and ensures a future-proof investment for theatre owners.

To maintain optimal picture quality, Samsung provides an auto calibration solution that enables theatres to easily calibrate their screens during installation and routine maintenance.

Designed for seamless integration, Onyx is compatible with both Dolby and GDC IMB media servers, making it easier for theatres to transition from traditional projection systems. Because of this, theatre networks can enjoy seamless content playback and efficient management.

Onyx is fully compatible with leading cinema audio solutions, including Dolby Atmos, Meyer Sound, QSC and custom-designed sound systems, providing theatres with the flexibility to customise their sound experience to meet their specific needs. For theaters using HARMAN’s JBL surround sound technology, Onyx also offers seamless integration to ensure optimised audio performance.

A Proven Legacy with Global Recognition

Samsung Onyx is one of the most widely adopted cinema LED screens in theatres worldwide — setting a new industry standard for premium cinema display technology. As it expands its presence, Onyx continues to showcase its unmatched reliability, versatility and ability to elevate the cinematic experience.

One of the most recent installations is at Pathé Palace in Paris, where Onyx was selected to enhance the premium viewing experience in one of the world’s most visually stunning cinemas.

“At Pathé, we are committed to delivering the highest-quality cinematic experience for our customers,” said Laure de Boissard, Managing Director, Pathé Cinéma France. “Samsung Onyx allows us to achieve stunning visuals with exceptional brightness and contrast, ensuring that every film is presented exactly as intended.”

Samsung Onyx is redefining how movies are experienced through its collaboration with the film industry as well. One such example was Samsung partnering with Pixar Animation Studios to master films like “Elemental,” “Inside Out 2,” and this summer’s “Elio” in HDR for Onyx, which led to the films being shown with exceptional brightness, contrast and colour accuracy. Through close collaboration with filmmakers, Onyx continues to push the boundaries of display technology, ensuring that creative visions are brought to life with unmatched precision and clarity.

“At Pixar, we believe cinema can be a grand, shared experience — a place where stories feel larger than life and memories are made with friends. That’s why we’re driven to bring something truly new to the big screen with our pioneering HDR-1 theatrical releases,” said Dominic Glynn, Senior Scientist, Pixar Animation Studios.
“In rising to meet this ambition, the ONYX screen technology delivers astonishing brightness, clarity, and colour — an image so clear and uniform it elevates every moment of the story. Even the casual moviegoer will feel the difference. It’s about creating that unforgettable ‘Wow!’ — the kind of experience that reminds us why cinema is, and always should be, special.”

CinemaCon attendees can experience the next-generation Onyx firsthand at Samsung’s booth at Caesars Palace, where the company will showcase its latest advancements in cinema display technology. Running March 31-April 3 in Las Vegas, CinemaCon is the largest annual gathering for the motion picture theatre industry, bringing together theatre owners, filmmakers, studio executives, and industry professionals from all over the world.

Misfiring tech and IT issues cost small British businesses a staggering £299,624 a year according to a new study from Samsung. The tech company surveyed 1,000 business owners who revealed they spend £3,200 on repairs and upgrades.

The survey of British businesses[1] was commissioned to mark the launch of the Samsung A Series Enterprise Edition which comes with a Next Business Day Replacement service[2]

Samsung has brought to life the dramatic impact of tech fails highlighted by the results by creating a series of posters inspired by action, drama and sci-fi genres. Disconnected: The Silent Office plays into sci-fi film tropes and highlights the expansive silence and suspension of business when tech fails to support SMEs. Inspired by action films, Business Phone Down aims to sensationalise the issues that ensues due to misfiring tech with The Day the Calls Stopped paying homage to drama tropes. The designs were curated to highlight the effects of dysfunctional phones and tech on small businesses as the research found that they would lose £226,808 per Annum if just their work phones were inaccessible as 74% admit their work phone is integral to their job.

The survey of 1,000 SME owners found one in six admitted that their workplace tech always seems to fail when they need it the most (59%) as they bemoaned having to cancel important meetings (66%), missing deadlines (52%) and losing business opportunities (41%) because of tech issues. While 56% typically replace outdated devices every two to five years, 47% admit they’ve tried to cut corners on tech quality — only to spend over £3,200 each year on repairs and updates which equals to £17.3 billion across the UK’s 5.5 million strong SME network.

SME owners also lamented outdated laptops (27%), incompatible software (27%) and worn-out smartphones (20%) as the biggest culprits for holding back productivity in the workplace. On average, UK SME owners collectively spend 286 million hours a year contacting IT to resolve hardware and software issues as 59% reveal they sometimes must work overtime as a result.

When it comes to productivity, SME owners estimate productivity levels would increase by 40% and almost two-thirds (64%) believe morale within their business would even improve with better-functioning technology.

In an aim to tackle the issues currently plaguing SME owners and announce the launch of its new A Series Enterprise Edition phone range, Samsung is offering a Next Day Business Replacement service[1]. The service will provide SMEs with guaranteed replacement Galaxy A Series devices arriving the following business day in the hope of reducing the impact on business-as-usual operations. They come fit with defence-grade Knox Vault security and powerful battery capabilities. Dealing with security concerns when it comes to protecting business data on work phones (14%), managing the cost of mobile devices without sacrificing functionality (10%) and managing the use of multiple devices by employees (10%) were revealed to be some of the most frustrating parts of their job.

Tech-related frustrations are widespread, with nearly six in 10 saying these issues prevent them from working properly, and 42% reported increased stress as result as half (52%) admit to resorting to using their personal devices more than once a week to get the work done.

Annika Bizon, Mobile Experience VP of Product and Marketing said: “Having issues with your work devices can cause a mountain of problems for business, even leading to a loss in revenue. We want to have SME owners back by offering Next Business Day Replacement with our Galaxy A Series Enterprise Edition range – ensuring all the productivity with none of the setbacks.”

79% of people looking to move (rent or buy) homes in the next five years want a smart home

They’re willing to pay a premium of 7.7% on the average UK house price, a value of around £21,774

70% of survey respondents want to improve energy efficiency with smart technology and 63% want to save money. A further 75% want technology that will improve security

Demographics are changing—48% of Gen Z want a smart home, but the number of over 65s looking for a smart home is increasing, a trend that we expect to continue

LONDON, U.K – June 27th 2024 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. Today, Samsung has released the latest data from its Smart Home Buyers Index 2024 (SHBI)[1].

The SHBI demonstrates the strength of the market opportunity for developers and homebuilders, with an overwhelming 79% of people surveyed saying that they want a smart home[2]. What’s more, they’re willing to pay an average premium of 7.7% on the average UK house price of £282,776, a value of around £21,774[3]. With the smart home market predicted to show a compound annual growth rate of 11.66% between 2024 and 2028 and generate projected revenues of approximately £8.6bn in 2024 alone[4], it’s clear that this movement is only gathering pace.

Financial concerns were chief among those looking for a smart home. In addition to the 63% of people who wanted cost savings through technology, around 70% of respondents highlighted energy efficiency as a key motivation in using smart technology, with 84% wanting to save money on their energy bills. This interest in energy-efficient devices and appliances was supported by Samsung’s analysis of search volumes, where searches for smart energy appliances rose nearly 60% from April 2023 to April 2024, led by air source heat pumps. Search volumes for air source heat pumps increased 173% year on year, overtaking searches for smart meters.

The focus on energy efficiency should be welcome news for an industry that is gearing up for the current UK Government’s Future Homes and Buildings Standards, which requires that new homes built from 2025 produce 75% to 80% less carbon than homes delivered under previous regulations. This comes into effect in 2025 and those homebuilders and developers that incorporate the appropriate future-proofed technologies, can support people in their quest for energy efficiencies and cost savings in the future, particularly as newer technologies become available.

Mark Seaman, Head of Samsung B2B Integrated Offering Team commented: “Samsung’s Smart Home Buyers Index uncovers the key consumer priorities for smart homes. We are a key partner for developers and homebuilders, guiding them as they deliver innovation and smarter living solutions. Through providing insights such as this, Samsung can help ensure the industry is keeping pace with changing consumer demands. The data shows that understanding the importance consumers place on smart homes will increase the value of rental and sale prices to help drive return on investment for homebuilders and developers.”

However, consumers’ finances should not be the only consideration when designing homes. After energy efficiency and cost savings, home security was the biggest reason people were looking to integrate smart technology, with 75% of people wanting peace of mind and to safeguard their homes with connected security features such as doorbells or cameras. Building connectivity into homes will allow for secure networks that are accessible from phones and other devices, enhancing a feeling of security and control.

The SHBI has also highlighted trends across age demographics. Smart homes are not just for young people. There has been an increase in the number of people more than 65 years old, who want to take advantage of smart technology in their homes. It’s therefore important that the industry doesn’t solely consider the technology needs of younger generations but are prepared to cater across demographics. This is particularly noteworthy with the older UK population[5] expected to grow to around 26% by 2066[6].

The UK construction industry is expecting new work output to grow by 21% during the five years from 2024 to 2029[7]. Those responsible for new construction projects would do well to take heed of the SHBI’s insight that technology is a key reason people want to move into new builds. The survey found 80% of people finding such homes attractive, with 36% citing the amount of smart technology that is pre-fitted as the main reason. A further 53% believe new developments are designed for modern life, likely including technology capabilities, whereas 57% returned to energy efficiency as their motivation to move into new developments. When asked specifically about new builds, 40% of people aged over 65 thought that pre-fitted technology would motivate them to move into one, again demonstrating the importance of integrating technology in all types of homes, including retirement properties.

Mark continued, “It’s critical that homes can support ongoing technology development and adapt to the ever-evolving landscape for smart devices and appliances. The sole focus shouldn’t be on providing technology for the short-term but on ensuring that homes are future-proofed. With 61% of our survey respondents saying they expect AI to become more important to them in the coming years, even if they’re not using it now, it’s clear today’s consumers are increasingly aware of its potential.

“Recent years have seen significant focus on the UK housing market, and the cost-of-living crisis, rising inflation and uncertain energy prices have also been top of many people’s agendas. There is a real opportunity for developers and homebuilders to engage the right partners and integrate technology from the outset, taking a digital-first approach when building the homes of tomorrow, today.”

[1] The SHBI provides an in-depth picture of key consumer trends regarding smart technology in the home. The Index is based on a bespoke survey of more than 1,000 consumers looking to move (buy or rent) homes in the next five years, combined with analysis of search volumes for smart devices and appliances from April 2023 to April 2024.

Close to half (46%) of hybrid workers plan to take advantage of office air conditioning if there is a repeat heatwave this summer

Almost a half (45%) say they’d avoid a restaurant or pub where the air conditioning wasn’t up to their standard and almost a quarter (24%) would side-step a shop or beauty salon for the same reason

LONDON, UK – 10th August 2023 – Today Samsung Climate Solutions reveals the results of bespoke research[1] which finds that although almost two-thirds (64%) of workers in the UK with hybrid working patterns are planning to spend more time in the office in 2023 than in 2022, 66% would be deterred from heading to the office if the air conditioning wasn’t working or was of their opinion low quality.

Against a backdrop of increased levels of office occupancy from previous years, and temperatures remaining at record levels in the UK, the need for quality climate control within the working environment will be a key factor for attracting more of those who want to be back with their professional peers in the office.

Among those putting in more days in the office, the difference from 2022 is considerable with the average being 9.2 extra days per month in 2023. This is particularly important to 18 to 24-year-olds of which 81% of those surveyed said they were planning more face-to-face days with their co-workers, highlighting the increasing importance of in person work and collaboration.

Almost half (46%) of those surveyed planned to take advantage of office air conditioning if there is a repeat heatwave this summer. It is clear to see how many hybrid workers appreciate a cool working environment as 35% said they go in when the weather is hot to make use of the air conditioning.

Given this demand, the quality of office environments is more vital than ever. 24% of hybrid workers were not satisfied with their office air conditioning, and of those 40% reported that it is often not functioning properly. Interestingly, almost a third (31%) of hybrid workers who have experienced problems with air conditioning say the problem is cold draughts.

Steve Fleming, Head of Climate Solutions UK & Ireland, commented: “As the UK adapts to changing working patterns and changing weather patterns, the importance of advanced technology in cooling will only increase. Businesses looking to attract workers into the office on a regular basis will gain significantly from quality climate control technology in the months and years to come. Such technologies include Samsung’s WindFreeTM cooling, which disperses the cool air evenly through an office without the stereotypical cold draughts that people complain about. There is a huge opportunity here to cope with demand as people return to the office to make our working and social spaces as comfortable as possible.”

Furthermore, control systems will have a key role in office comfort. The research reveals that just under half (42%) of hybrid workers in the UK have had a dispute about the air conditioning. A third of respondents (34%) have argued with colleagues about what temperature the room should be set at and just under a quarter (24%) have complained about the temperature going up and down due to people constantly altering it.

Interestingly, the most common trigger for the dispute is individuals setting the thermostat to suit themselves (37%). Over half (55%) of hybrid workers say that their offices have a single control system to manage the temperature for the whole working space. Only a third (36%) have systems that allow them to control the temperature by office area and only a quarter of offices have a democratic approach to controlling the temperature in their workspace, allowing each employee to cast an equal vote. However, this progressive approach doesn’t apply everywhere. 15% of respondents stated that in their offices, the boss will be in charge of setting the temperature.

As the hybrid working landscape changes, workers are adjusting their lifestyles to best suit their work-life balance, especially as the UK climate changes too. This is changing our expectations of public spaces, from offices to gyms, as more than half (57%) of hybrid workers in the UK (rising to almost two thirds (62%) among women) would avoid a gym where the air conditioning wasn’t up to their standard. Almost a half (45%) say they’d avoid a restaurant or pub with a similar problem and almost a quarter (24%) would side-step a shop.

Building cloud management services, such as Samsung’s b.IoT interface which allows remote, zoned control for commercial buildings, will enable companies to manage office environments for the benefit of all employees. Technology is rapidly advancing to best suit the needs and demands of the changing climate and this data illustrates the importance of climate control for the modern hybrid worker.

LONDON, UK – 28th June 2023 – Samsung Electronics Co. (UK) Ltd. Today Samsung reveals the results of a bespoke research survey* and the analysis of UK Google search results, sharing the overarching themes that are permeating consumer conversations regarding smart technology in the home. With Samsung being a leading collaborator in the building industry, the results provide essential guidance to those in construction as to how to best meet the purchasing demands of the modern consumer.

A survey of 1,000 adults looking to move home (buy or rent) in the next five years, combined with the analysis of Google search trends between March 2022 and March 2023, showed six key insights:

Consumers want smart technology and will pay a premium for a smart home – 6.5% more than the average house price in the UK**

Customers are prioritising energy efficiency – 71% said energy efficiency is a key factor when considering a smart home

Ideally, new build developments should be smart tech optimised to attract the modern buyer – a third are drawn toward new builds as they think they will be pre-fitted with smart tech

Almost 40% of Gen Z buyers want their next property to be a smart home

Smart Energy devices lead the online search categories when compared to lifestyle, home and security – half of all UK smart tech searches featured the phrase ‘smart energy’

Device compatibility is key – 81% said it is “important” tech is compatible and works seamlessly with current device

With 35% of respondents saying they would be “much more likely” to go for a home if it was fully equipped with smart tech, and just over a third say they would move into a home without smart tech but would retrofit it later, the importance of this technology becomes clear. One in ten said they would only move into a house with smart technology.

Almost nine in ten (88%) of those planning to buy or rent in the next five years would consider a new build property, with nearly half of those doing so because the homes are likely to be energy efficient. Searches for ‘energy efficient new build homes UK’ doubled between March and April 2023.

Movers are keen to step into a home which is set up to suit their technological needs – with 86% saying they would consider a smart home when searching for their next property. The appetite is clearly there, with people being prepared to spend 6.5% more for a fully equipped smart home – which would add more than £18,000 to the average house price of £285,000.

Thinking specifically about which devices are most attractive to consumers in the home, the majority chose a smart meter or smart TV as the most popular device. In a breakdown of UK Google searches in April 2023 for smart devices across four categories; ENERGY, LIFESTYLE, HOME APPLIANCES, SECURITY, it is smart energy devices that stand out as the strongest category (50% searched this category).

It’s clear that concern around the cost of living and environmental impact is growing in importance. Technology relating to energy efficiency is highly sought after with 29% saying they would like an air source heat pump in their home, which again was in the top three searches for smart home products after a smart meter, and before a heat pump tumble dryer. Almost three quarters (71%) said energy efficiency is a key factor when considering a smart home and more than half (56%) say it will save them money.

Mark Seaman, Head of New Business Development at Samsung UK, commented: “These results have shown that there is a real opportunity for the construction industry to answer the technology requirements of the modern consumer, to build homes that are future fit, to give buyers smarter, more efficient and better-connected properties that stand the test of time.

“That’s why, over the past few years we’ve been focused on building partnerships across the construction industry to strengthen our collaborative approach to meeting the needs of home buyers. Adopting a consultancy mindset, we have proven experience partnering with clients from the planning stage through to completion to ensure the right smart technology is applied to developments. We’re helping shape the homes of the future – creating smarter spaces that are powered by technology and have the potential to benefit everyone.”

Mark Zwerner, Vice President Global Strategic Partnerships at ABB, added: “As a proud partner of Samsung, we are pleased to see this kind of evidence supporting our experience of the consumer desire for smart technology in the home.

“Our jointly developed interconnected solutions for energy management, the smart Internet of Things (IoT) connection, and home automation allow users to easily manage their homes via one single app, touch panels, or Smart TVs. As a major leader in innovation, Samsung also supports our vision of providing owners and operators with a fully connected solution to manage all units within a larger property.”

These results have shown that smart tech in the home has evolved considerably, and those in the construction industry have a real opportunity to answer the clearly signalled requests for energy efficiency, money saving and enhancement of daily life, which in turn will of course increase sales.
