From tracking workouts and understanding sleep to managing everyday tasks from your wrist, Brits are becoming increasingly tuned into what their health data can tell them.

New research commissioned by Samsung reveals that more than six in ten Brits (62%) now track some aspect of their health or wellbeing, while 55% say they are more proactive about monitoring their health than they were five years ago^[1] .

But Galaxy Watch can do much more than keep tabs on your health. Talk to Gemini without reaching for your phone

Lee’s favourite new Galaxy Watch feature is also one of the easiest to overlook.

With Raise to Talk, simply lift your Galaxy Watch towards your mouth and Google Gemini^[2] is ready to listen – no tapping through menus required.

“My favourite new feature on the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Watch9 is Raise to Talk to activate Google Gemini,” says Lee. “I’ve found this really useful to get quick answers to questions on the go, especially without having to reach for my smartphone.”

Google Gemini2 also allows you to use natural voice instructions, making it particularly useful when you’re on the move or have your hands full. Rather than stopping what you’re doing to navigate your Galaxy Watch, you can simply ask for what you need.

Lee’s tip: Try Raise to Talk in those moments when your hands are full or you’d normally instinctively reach for your phone.

Master the ‘knock knock’

If talking to your Galaxy Watch isn’t convenient, there’s another hands-free shortcut worth knowing about.

Gestures allow you to control certain Galaxy Watch functions using movements of your hand, meaning you can trigger an action without navigating the touchscreen. One of Lee’s favourites is the “knock knock” gesture.

“You can perform a ‘knock knock’ gesture with your fist that can be used for all sorts of actions, like activating an exercise, turning on the torch function or launching your favourite app,” Lee explains.

That means a simple movement can get you straight to a function you regularly use – particularly handy when you’re exercising, commuting or have your other hand occupied.

Lee’s tip: Set the gesture to an action you use regularly, whether that’s quickly starting a workout, switching on the torch or opening your favourite app.

Leave more to your Watch 

Sometimes, getting more from your Galaxy Watch isn’t about discovering one new feature, but realising how many everyday tasks you can already manage from your wrist.

“Our Galaxy Watches have so many features,” says Lee. “They’re also a great lifestyle companion – you can manage all of your messages and notifications, make and receive calls, make payments on the go with Samsung Wallet^[3]   and download your favourite apps like Spotify, WhatsApp and hundreds more via the Google Play Store^[4] .”

That means everything from checking a message to changing your music or paying for your morning coffee can be handled straight from your wrist.

Samsung Newsroom spoke with James Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of XR R&D Team, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, to learn about the development of intelligent eyewear, the engineering behind its design and Samsung’s long-term vision for the AI glasses category.

Q.Why is Samsung introducing intelligent eyewear now and why does it believe AI glasses will become the next interface for mobile AI?

AI glasses will only become mainstream if people genuinely want to wear them every day. Achieving this level of wearability requires more than advanced AI — it also demands deep engineering expertise, mobile technologies and an understanding of how people use technology in their daily lives. Drawing on decades of mobile leadership, Samsung is well positioned to bring these elements together and help move the category forward.

AI glasses understand what users see, hear and experience around them and enable more natural, contextual and seamless interactions, bringing AI closer to the moments that matter in everyday life. Our goal is not to replace the mobile phone but to create AI glasses that help people use their phones less, while getting more value from the mobile experiences they rely on. Samsung is laying the foundation for this vision through the new intelligent eyewear, extending mobile AI beyond the screen.

Q. What are the biggest engineering priorities when developing AI glasses?

The journey began with Galaxy XR. Through our experience developing it, we learned how to design technology that people can comfortably wear on their faces. We applied those insights to intelligent eyewear, focusing every engineering decision on comfort, fit and everyday use.

Wearability isn’t simply a design challenge — it’s an engineering one. When it comes to eyewear, even a tenth of a millimeter matters. That is why we took a holistic approach, carefully considering weight, materials, thermal management and battery efficiency.

Designed to be slim and light, intelligent eyewear incorporates patented slim hinges, advanced thin-wall molding, lightweight materials and optimized hardware components. Its hinge structure prevents corrosion and withstands the demands of everyday wear, while the patented temple architecture improves structural rigidity. Thermal graphite material on the left side of the glasses also helps prevent heat generated by the AP (Application Processor) from transferring to the user’s face.

Because every face is different, we used computational design and worked closely with our eyewear partners to refine the fit across key contact points including the forehead, cheekbones and behind the ears. We also balanced the weight across both sides of the frame, so users can barely notice any difference.

Samsung has filed around 200 patent applications in this category, reflecting its long-term investment in intelligent eyewear. Ultimately, all that engineering is designed to disappear into the experience, making the glasses feel as natural as an ordinary pair.

Q. How did you ensure intelligent eyewear was resilient enough for everyday use?

Users expect Samsung-quality products, regardless of form factor. We applied the manufacturing expertise and rigorous verification standards developed over decades of Galaxy device innovation, while introducing additional testing tailored to intelligent eyewear.

Because it is worn directly on the face, intelligent eyewear had to meet the standards of both mobile devices and eyewear — and go beyond them. It underwent extensive durability, environmental and safety testing, including exposure to high temperatures, humidity, sunscreen, cosmetics and sweat, as well as folding and hinge expansion tests.

Despite the extensive engineering packed into its slim and lightweight design, intelligent eyewear delivers uncompromising performance, including strong battery life. Through hardware and software optimization, intelligent eyewear provides up to nine hours of active use on a single charge, even during demanding experiences such as Gemini and video recording. The charging case enables more than seven full recharges for extended multi-day use.^[2]

Q. Why do you see intelligent eyewear as a new entry point for mobile AI?

Intelligent eyewear introduces a more natural and intuitive way to experience mobile AI. Its ability to understand what users see, hear and experience around them enables more personalized, contextual support in the moment.

With a high-quality camera, microphones and speakers integrated into its frame, intelligent eyewear responds through natural conversation, while reducing the need for users to stop and reach for a phone.

From real-time guidance and live translation to line-of-sight capture and context-aware assistance, these experiences are designed to help users access mobile AI while staying present in what they are doing.^[3]

Q. How does intelligent eyewear fit within the broader Galaxy ecosystem?

Intelligent eyewear is designed to work as a companion device to Galaxy phones and other Galaxy wearables, extending mobile AI beyond the screen through more personalized experiences. Users can access apps and services they already rely on — from Samsung and Google apps to third-party content — through a natural, hands-free interface.

For example, they can start recording hands-free with intelligent eyewear, preview what they have captured on Now Bar and then access it in Galaxy Gallery on their phone.^[4] Through split computing, processing is distributed between intelligent eyewear and the connected Galaxy phone, helping optimize performance.

Intelligent eyewear also works with Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Buds. Users can manage the device directly from their wrist through the Galaxy Watch screen or with intuitive gestures.^[5] When Galaxy Buds are connected, they can switch audio without interrupting the experience.

Q. How did you integrate privacy and trust into the design of intelligent eyewear?

As AI becomes more personal and integrated into everyday life, trust becomes even more important. That’s why privacy was built into intelligent eyewear from the beginning, with safeguards designed to protect users and those around them.

A bystander-facing LED indicator and an inner LED clearly show when recording is active. Wear detection automatically disables recording when the glasses are removed, while a thwart detection feature disables recording if the external LED indicator is blocked.

Users can also manage privacy and personalization settings through connected Galaxy phones.  Their audio, video and screen-sharing data are not used to train AI models.

Samsung will continue to enhance its privacy features to give users greater transparency and control.

Q. What does intelligent eyewear represent for Samsung’s long-term vision?

Samsung has a long history of helping define new product categories — including foldables — and setting the standards consumers have come to expect from them. Galaxy Watch Ultra2: Adventure Without Limits

Combining top-tier performance with exceptional durability, Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is optimised for high-intensity sports and outdoor activities.

Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is the first Galaxy Watch powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon® Wear Elite Platform,^[1] delivering fast performance and precise GPS tracking. Its 800mAh battery offers 35% more capacity than that of previous generations. The display reaches up to 5,000 nits of brightness — a first for a smartwatch — making on-screen information easy to read even under bright lighting^[2].

When developing the new Galaxy Buds4 Pro, Samsung focused heavily on completely reimagining how an earbud captures and transmits the human voice. Their first objective was to develop a brand-new Sensor Fusion technology — ensuring a user’s speech can cut through the noise with absolute clarity.

What is Sensor Fusion and How Is it Important for Call Quality?

When it comes to taking calls, an earbud’s microphone is much farther from your mouth than a phone’s, making your voice highly susceptible to being drowned out by ambient noise. For traditional earbuds relying on a single sensor, this physical limitation often means compromised call quality, especially when ambient noise is louder than the user’s voice.

To overcome this, Samsung applied an environment-aware Sensor Fusion technology^[1] for Galaxy Buds4 Pro. Instead of relying on one input, Samsung’s technology intelligently combines multiple sensors to recognize and adapt to the surrounding environment.

Buds4 Pro is equipped with three microphones — two external microphones directly capture a user’s voice, while a third internal microphone detects speech transmitted within the body. Importantly, a Voice Pickup Unit (VPU) sensor based on bone conduction also detects the head’s physical vibrations when a user speaks.

The voice data then activates a noise reduction algorithm that allows Buds4 Pro to precisely isolate and comprehensively reconstruct the user’s voice from surrounding noise with pinpoint accuracy, ensuring clear communication even in the most chaotic environments.

How Sophisticated Is the Buds4 Pro’s Noise Reduction Algorithm?

An AI-based system called a Deep Neural Network (DNN) — modelled loosely on the structure of the human brain — serves as the core noise reduction technology within Buds4 Pro’s sensor fusion architecture. Typically, software this powerful requires massive computing power that simply cannot fit inside a tiny earbud. However, Samsung meticulously optimised its algorithm for on-device processing, slashing the processing load to roughly 10% of the original computational requirements and shrinking the model size to just 30%, successfully bringing powerful AI voice processing to a compact earbud form factor.

But blocking noise isn’t enough to guarantee true call clarity — the earbuds must also make sure your voice sounds natural. To do that, Buds4 Pro analyses past, present and predictive sound data to instantly adapt to rapidly changing environments. Samsung also upgraded its algorithm to capture 16 times more vocal detail than previous models. Because of this massive boost in precision, every part of your speech — from high-pitched tones to sharp consonants and subtle word endings — remains crisp and easy to understand, no matter how loud your environment gets.

Buds4 Pro even accounts for natural body movements that can cause the earbuds to shift, causing ‘fit leakages’ that allow unwanted background noise to seep in. To counter this, Buds4 Pro continuously analyses signals from the inner and outer microphones to estimate leakage in real time, dynamically adjusting the audio to keep the call crystal clear.

Furthermore, Buds4 Pro’s superior DNN-powered voice clarity is truly maximised when paired with a Galaxy smartphone, harnessing a Super Wideband (SWB) connection of up to 16 kHz^[2] to deliver exceptionally rich and natural voice quality.
