Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced that it has had the carbon reduction impact of AI Energy Mode^[1] in its select washing machines verified by the Carbon Trust Assurance, based on the Decarbonising the Use-Phase of Connected Devices (DUCD) specification. This marks the first time that a product or feature has been validated using the DUCD specification. It is especially significant as it demonstrates the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction effect achieved through the AI Energy Mode during the use phase, verified by a third party.

“At Samsung, we continue to design our products and services with environmental factors in mind,” said Jeong Seung Moon, Executive Vice President and Head of the R&D Team for Digital Appliances (DA) Business at Samsung Electronics. “AI Energy Mode is a key example of such efforts, and with this verification recognizing its effectiveness, we will strive to further improve our products, features and services during their actual use.”

Samsung’s Longstanding Efforts

Samsung has long worked to establish objective and systematic indicators to assess and manage carbon emissions generated from home appliances. As part of these efforts, the company joined the DUCD initiative as a Secretariat member in September 2022.

The DUCD initiative is led by the Carbon Trust, a global climate consultancy, which partners with businesses, governments and financial institutions to drive positive climate action. Through collaboration with other industry leaders, it aims to standardise how energy use and savings from connected devices are measured, and contribute to building global methodologies for calculating the carbon savings of Wi-Fi–connected devices.

In November 2024, the initiative published a global specification establishing unified measurement criteria and reduction methodologies for connected devices. This approach measures the reduction in carbon emissions that occur during the consumer’s actual usage phase, distinguishing it from the measurement or reduction of carbon emissions during the production process conventionally used.

Verified Carbon Reduction with AI Energy Mode

Using this guidance, the Carbon Trust’s independent assurance arm, the Carbon Trust Assurance Ltd, tested a pilot assessment on Samsung’s global washing machine lineup.^[2] It verified the reduction effect of AI Energy Mode by comparing the amount of carbon emitted between July 2024 and June 2025 when using the AI Energy Mode with the amount emitted when not using this mode.

For Samsung’s select energy-efficient washing machines, the total energy consumption using the SmartThings Platform^[3] has been verified at 12.28 GWh during this time period,^[4] resulting in 5,266 tCO₂e, by Carbon Trust Assurance Ltd according to the DUCD Part 1: Specification and Guidance. The verified total energy savings of 5.02 GWh in energy consumption, and 2,084 tCO₂e in GHG emissions savings can be attributed to switched-on AI Energy Mode.^[5]

This level of energy savings corresponds to the amount of electricity that approximately 169,000 households can use in a single day, given that an average U.S. residential electric-utility customer purchases about 29.54 kWh of energy daily.^[6]

Meanwhile, the company will participate in the upcoming CES 2026, where it will showcase both its energy-saving solutions and innovative new products.

Samsung Electronics (UK) Limited has announced it is partnering with Eco-Bos, to deliver pioneering smart home technology that drives down carbon emissions and increases energy efficiencies for the West Carclaze Garden Village in Cornwall. Residents in West Carclaze can enjoy lower energy bills and effortless control of their living environment, thanks to the Samsung SmartThings platform that lets them choose how to manage heating, lighting, security, and appliances all from a single app.

One of the UK’s first Garden Villages the 1,500 homes set within 500 acres, 350 which are a Country Park, in West Carclaze, places wellbeing and innovation at its core, providing homes that are highly energy efficient and designed to take full advantage of new technologies and innovative materials. The development also includes a 7.5 MW onsite solar farm to support renewable energy supply. Critically, West Carclaze homes are rated EPC A, a rating achieved by only 0.3% of homes in the UK in an area noted as one of the least energy efficient counties in the UK*.

West Carclaze residents will benefit from this pioneering development, with each household saving both time and money through the improvements. Community residents can expect to generate a profit of up to £1,779, based on SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) calculations as outlined in the Predictive Energy Assessment from the Elmhurst Energy Report. Comparatively, a typical UK family household’s electricity and gas bill is approximately £1,719.45 per year, highlighting the potential for significant financial savings of up to £3,498 per year.^[1]

As part of the collaboration, Samsung will provide its smart devices and appliances to each of the remaining 1,500 homes. Every property will come equipped as standard with a Samsung Heat Pump, Climate Hub, Solar PV as well as smart devices to handle everyday tasks across cooking, laundry, and dishwashing. All connected and managed in one simple interface via Samsung’s SmartThings^[2] app, available on Android or iOS. The open ecosystem gives residents the ability to connect more than 350 partner brands within their home, including Amazon Alexa, Philips Hue and many other devices which be tailored based on each residents’ evolving needs.

Thanks to Samsung’s SmartThings platform and app, residents can seamlessly manage everyday tasks and benefit from SmartThings’ AI Energy Mode. This automatically switches appliances such as washing machines, fridge freezers and ovens to save energy through intelligent automation and learning capabilities within the appliances. For example a Samsung washing machine could reduce energy use by up to 20%^[3] by simply switching on AI Energy Mode. By empowering residents to optimise their energy use and automate everyday routines, the tech at the heart of West Carclaze Garden Village will help create a more efficient community where residents can enjoy lower running costs of their home through reduced energy usage.

Plus, thanks to SpaceMax technology, the new products enable a large capacity of 11 kg ^[2] while the outside dimensions stay the same.

More Efficient Than Class “A” Through Samsung’s Advanced Technologies

The new washing machine lineup brings significant energy savings to the laundry process, with the most notable achievement being the 40% more energy efficient than A rated model1. Samsung has introduced advanced technologies into the lineup in order to achieve this.

The core technology leading the extra energy saving is the Bubble Shot^[3]. It sprays soapy water inside the drum on top of the clothes by pulling it through a circulation pump. This means the detergent penetrates evenly, enhancing overall washing efficiency.

The newly launched Bubble Shot Technology helps users save water and cycle time when using the Cotton cycle. using up to 20% less water^[4] than a conventional washing machine. Using the same amount of detergent, it also means the density of the detergent is higher, enhancing the performance while shortening the washing cycle time by up to 25%^[4] .

With AI Energy Mode^[5], available through the SmartThings app10, energy monitoring is extended even further. Users can monitor their daily, weekly and monthly power consumption, with the feature even estimating users’ monthly energy bills. If the monthly electricity bill indicates that it may exceed a users’ target, SmartThings Energy can turn on the energy saving mode, which then smartly reduces energy consumption by up to 70% compared to washing in warm water^[6].

Elevating User Experiences with AI-Based Technologies

While the new lineup improves the performance in energy efficiency, the core functions also help users reduce efforts in treating their laundry.

AI Wash takes the guesswork out of the perfect wash. Four sensors weigh your wash load and check the level of soiling to adjust the water, amount of detergent dispensed, rinse time and spin speed* for great results and minimal wear and tear with every wash.

In addition to that AI Ecobubble^[7] goes one step further by detecting for wash loads of up to 2kg.

A Wide Range of Impressive Laundry Features

Samsung has applied and expanded features in three important areas of the laundry experience ― the reduction of microplastics release, ease of use, and washing time. Here is how:

Less Microfiber Cycle: All entries in the lineup come with the standard Less Microfiber Cycle. It was created to help shed less microplastics being discharged into drain water from clothes. By adjusting the motor’s revolution speed and washing intensiveness, this cycle reduces the amount of microfiber released in the drain water

Detergent Scan^[8] and Care Label Scan^[9]: Enjoy personalised and efficient laundry. Clothing Care^[10] analyses your usage^[11] to make recommendations and customise cycles^[12]. By scanning the barcode on detergent, it automatically sets the appropriate amount for each load^[13]. When you take a photo of the care label on your clothes and register them in ‘My Closet’ it suggests customised courses for items selected from it, so you get the perfect wash.

Super Speed: With Super Speed, the loads can be finished in just 39 minutes.^[14] This short wash time is enabled by QuickDrive, which dynamically moves clothes. The rinsing time is also shortened using Speed Spray, which shoots powerful jets of water to quickly remove detergent residue. And the washer accelerates the spin speed based on the laundry load to quickly spin-dry clothes, as well.

LONDON, United Kingdom – April 3 2024 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced the launch of its new energy-efficient 75cm Wide Combi Fridge Freezer^[1] in Europe. The refrigerator was unveiled at ‘Welcome to BESPOKE AI’, a global launch event held at les Pavillon des Étangs in Paris on April 3. It achieves a high energy rating as a product itself, while its Wi-Fi capabilities allow for even further energy savings with SmartThings Energy^[2].

“In response to the reality that energy efficiency is more important to consumers than ever, Samsung is launching a new model for the modern era,” said Moohyung Lee, EVP and Head of the Customer Experience Team of Digital Appliances (DA) Business at Samsung Electronics. “Through our considerable R&D efforts, we’ve been able to provide energy-saving opportunities in addition to the Samsung quality and features that global consumers appreciate. Notably, the refrigerator has received an energy “A” rating according to EU energy standards, which is for the first time in Samsung’s 75cm Wide Combi Fridge Freezer type. Samsung implements its unique solutions to decrease energy consumption by 55.9% compared to the conventional model^[3]. Especially the new AI Inverter Compressor^[4] is a key part to achieve an A grade according to EU energy standards.

The new high-efficient AI Inverter Compressor has been redesigned to increase the radius of the rotating parts which enables its inertia to be higher than the conventional compressor^[5] by 4.1 times. It means that the compressor can keep the power longer, so it uses less energy while keeping the temperature in the fridge moderate. The compressor also contributes to lowering the noise level by up to 5 times quieter than the conventional model^[6] thanks to the new control technology.

Additionally, the 75cm Wide Combi Fridge Freezer supports the energy saving mode in SmartThings Energy^[7] which can reduce energy use by up to 15%^[8]. The SmartThings AI Energy Mode also allows users to easily check daily, weekly and monthly power consumption, and it even estimates monthly electric bills. If usage exceeds the established estimate, the mode can also proactively save energy^[9]. Furthermore, it can optimize the compressor speed and defrost cycle frequency, based on usage and surroundings, ensuring that users can enjoy fresher food items for longer.

Samsung also made the model to be competitive both in capacity and design as well. To enhance the capacity benefits of having a refrigerator with a wider width than common type, Samsung applies SpaceMax technology which has been the heritage of Samsung refrigerator. The fridge makes use of thin walls and efficient insulation to increase the storage volume while maintaining consistent temperatures. The extra storage space does not impact the exterior of the refrigerator, either, as the relatively compact size creates more room in users’ homes.

Apart from its performance and storage capabilities, the refrigerator brings a sleek design that makes it a great aesthetic fit for modern homes. Samsung shares its vision for how connectivity among the products can improve the overall experience at home and how artificial intelligence (AI) enhances the performance of appliances.

Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics, kicked off the marathon of events by opening the media event at the Seoul ‘BESPOKE AI’ by describing how Samsung home appliances not only perform well with everyday tasks but can do more than previously imagined with the power of AI. Especially with interactive screens being added to the refrigerator and induction hob, , Bespoke appliances will become a platform for entertainment, as well as an easy-to-access control hub for other connected Samsung appliances through SmartThings ^[1].

“Since the first introduction of BESPOKE in 2019, Samsung Electronics has presented to the market, appliances that can be customised to best fit each user’s home and lifestyle,” said JH Han. “Five years later, we now share our vision for AI in appliances with the products that expand the Bespoke legacy through enhanced connectivity and AI capabilities that will take the consumer experience to the next level.”

Bespoke AI Appliances Sync to Create New Experiences in Various Home Spaces

With built-in Wi-Fi, internal cameras, AI chips and compatibility with the SmartThings application, Samsung’s latest Bespoke AI appliances come with enhanced features and connectivity to lay the foundation for a truly smart home. In particular, the new AI Hub, a connected 7-inch LCD display that has been added to multiple products, provides intuitive, easy access and control over the entire connected ecosystem.

The AI Hub includes Map View, a feature that provides users with a full 3D view of the house, allowing them to easily locate all the appliances that are connected and control them. When a user is cooking in the kitchen and feels that the temperature is too hot, for instance, they could turn on the air conditioner in other rooms through the AI Hub on the induction range^[2] without leaving the pots and pans unattended. While doing laundry, they could use the AI Hub on the washing machine to start the robot vacuum cleaner in the living room, without having to make the journey back and forth. Moreover, the AI Hub not only makes housework easier, but more enjoyable as well. Users can play their favourite songs, watch videos on the Internet app, or refer to recipes on the screen while they are cooking.

Considering how people have mobile phones with them most of the time, Mobile Smart Connect is a new feature that pushes an alert to the phone when it is at close range with registered appliances. The pop-up notification includes quick control menu to execute key functions for the appliance directly from the phone, so users no longer have to look through the house to find the actual remote control^[3]. This eliminates even the few steps and clicks that were required to access same features in the SmartThings application.

At the BESPOKE AI event, Samsung also showcases the new feature ‘Calm Onboarding’, which makes it easier for users to join Samsung’s connected life. It frees users from having to go through the hassle of product registration, as it directly registers products purchased under a Samsung account at Samsung.com on to the SmartThings app with the same account.

To provide assurance to users as they step into the era of hyper-connected home appliances driven by technological advancement, Samsung also highlighted its comprehensive Knox Matrix security platform that protects all user data located on the connected appliances. In fact, the 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub^[4] became the first product in the industry to be verified to level ‘Diamond’ for its IoT security capabilities by UL Solutions, a leading global safety science company that evaluates hundreds of marketing claims each year. Other Family Hub models ^[5]applying the same technology, and the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI have also achieved the same verification.

AI Expands Spectrum of Features to Samsung Home Appliances

The most distinctive difference between the three events, other than the location, is the product lineup unveiled during the respective press conferences, which reflects the actual appliances that will launch in each market.

The Seoul ‘BESPOKE AI’ event started off with the biggest lineup among the three locations with 14 new products including: the Bespoke French Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+, Hybrid Refrigerator, Bespoke Infinite Induction Line, Bespoke AI Laundry Combo^[6], Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI, Bespoke Jet AI, Bespoke Cube Air Infinite Line and more.

The French Style Four Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub^[7] is the primary control centre for all things food, connecting the refrigerator to other appliances in the home. The AI Family Hub+^[8], which is the large LCD screen in the front right panel of the refrigerator, is the key to intuitive AI experience, where users can view recommended recipes and play music and videos for kitchen entertainment. It comes with AI Vision Inside^[9] which uses an internal camera to identify 33 fresh food items that go in and out of the fridge. The recognised food items are listed and managed on the Family Hub display and can also be checked on the SmartThings app^[10].

Another key product is the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI, a robot vacuum and mop cleaner with AI-enhanced features such as intelligent AI Recognition and Clean Station Steam+ to achieve better cleaning results with less effort. The intelligent AI Recognition performs in different ways. The AI Object Recognition uses the AI Deep Neural Network (DNN) model and camera to recognize various objects^[11] including people^[12], pets^[13], and hard-to-see items like thin phone cables, rugs or mats. The AI Floor Detect senses the type of floor to clean, and when carpets are detected, the robot vacuum decides whether to lift up its mop or to go and leave the mop at its station to avoid contaminating the carpet with its wet mop.

As energy-saving is an important criteria in the European market, the Paris ‘BESPOKE AI’ event additionally introduced the new energy-efficient extra wide fridge freezer^[14] and the washer lineup. The extra wide fridge freezer is the first of its kind in the European market to receive an “A” grade according to European energy standards, thanks to Samsung’s unique solutions to decrease energy consumption by 56% compared to the conventional model^[15]. The new washer lineup includes various models from A-10%, A-20% and even an A-40% extra energy saving model^[16]. Especially A-40% extra energy efficient model is equipped with Bubble Shot Technology, which saves energy by pumping up the water inside the drum and spraying it on to top of the clothes.

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, presented at both Seoul and NYC events, is the All-in-One washer and dryer, providing the advantages of two separate appliances while freeing up valuable space. It comes with various AI features, such as remembering the periodic and seasonal needs of users and recommending the optimal cycle for the wash^[17]. With AI Opti Wash & Dry, the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo intelligently adjusts the washing and drying performance for each load and senses the weight of the laundry to dispense the appropriate amount of water and detergent. It also detects the fabric^[18] and monitors the level of soiling during a cycle, adding more detergent and varying the washing time if necessary. It then adjusts the drying process to suit the weight and fabric type of users’ laundry. After finishing the cycle, users can monitor how much energy and water were consumed through a report provided on the Smart Things app^[19].

A unique appliance introduced only at the New York event held in Samsung 837 was the Bespoke Slide-in Range with AI Hub. This product is a multi-functional induction range that also comes with various fun factors. It comes with an Internal Oven Camera that lets users see inside the oven from remote places, like on the TV^[20] from the living room, or even from outside the home through Smart Things on their mobile phones. With this, users can even get a short time-lapse video clip^[21] with highlights of the cooking process that they can share on social media.

Furthermore, Samsung is the first in the industry to incorporate generative AI to home appliances. Especially, Bixby, Samsung’s voice assistant, will be a key in this. Generative AI will allow Bixby to go one step further from the current ability of being able to execute one order at a time, comprehending complex sentences and engage in natural conversations. First of all, it will be able to understand compound demands like “Turn on the air conditioner to Wind Free mode, and let me know how the weather is.” It can also retain context from previous interactions for continuity, so if the user instructs Bixby to turn off the air purifier and then add, “Oh, and the TV, too,” Bixby can assist both requests. With SmartThings Energy, it is easy to monitor and control the amount of energy consumed by connected Samsung appliances. In the near future, Samsung also plans to launch its new Samsung Rewards which will allow users to get stamps each day if they save a certain amount of energy using AI Energy mode. Product safety is also an important factor that Samsung prioritises, with the company striving strive to achieve and expand certifications to prove its product liability across all appliance categories, including reduced fire risk (RFR) certification for new products. As more people become energy-conscious, consumers are seeking new ways to be mindful of their environmental impact, reduce their carbon footprint and save money where they can. This simple feature can mean saving valuable pounds off your energy bill as it analyses your usage to save you money.

Samsung Electronics, a global leader in the TV industry, has been propelling its commitment towards sustainable tech through a series of new features, including AI Energy Mode.  This feature can be easily accessed through the SmartThings app, Samsung’s integrated and expansive multi-device ecosystem controller, so users can easily lower their energy consumption and monitor their homes’ energy usage – starting with the television.

What is AI Energy Mode?

• A smart energy-saving feature which monitors energy usage in real-time and adjusts to the environment. It works by using the TV’s built-in processor and sensors to analyse viewing environments and ambient light and automatically adjusts relevant settings to save energy.

How do I use it?

• The feature will be powered by Samsung’s SmartThings app, which serves as a remote control for the entire home. Simply open the SmartThings app, activate AI Energy Mode and let the TV’s AI processor handle the rest.
• What’s more, the immersive 3D Map View on the SmartThings app shows a bird’s eye view of the home so users can easily see their devices* at-a-glance to oversee and manage energy consumption.

What does AI Energy Mode do?**

• Environment Adaptive Brightness: The built-in light sensor automatically adjusts screen brightness based on surrounding light conditions. Using advanced motion sensor, the TV automatically dims brightness when it detects no viewer actively for more than two hours.

Samsung’s presence at IFA 2023 comes as the company shares new consumer research, conducted across Europe to understand evolving needs for technology in the home[1].

Announced at the press conference, Samsung Food is available in 104 countries and eight languages, and puts the world’s food knowledge at users’ fingertips, empowering them to make the food, health and cooking decisions that are right for them. It also connects to users’ kitchens, instantly sending the right time and temperature to their compatible Samsung oven. With more than 160,000 recipes, there will always be something new to cook.

By the end of the year, using Food AI, Samsung Food will provide personalised recipes reflecting users’ dietary requirements, such as converting recipes into a vegan version in just a few taps. In a further enhancement due later this year, it will link with Samsung Health so tailored meal plans can be adapted to suit preferences and dietary requirements, as well as support users in reaching their health goals. In 2024, using Vision AI technology, Samsung Food will use photos taken of meals to check nutritional information, recognise ingredients and recommend the best recipes to use them in.

As the number one TV brand for 17 years in a row[3], Samsung has an unrivalled commitment to entertainment. It has completed its super screen line up with the launch of the 98” Neo QLED 8K and 4K Q80C and plans to bring its full range of Micro LED screens to Europe by the end of the year, offering incredible contrast and jaw-dropping detail that places viewers in the middle of the action whether gaming or watching films.

To celebrate Disney’s 100^th anniversary, Samsung has announced the launch of The Frame – Disney100 Edition, featuring an exclusive bezel in the Disney100 signature platinum silver metal and a unique Mickey Mouse inspired Disney remote. Also announced at the press conference was the global launch of The Freestyle 2^nd Gen. This versatile, portable projector delivers a big screen experience wherever the user chooses – even on the ceiling. The Smart Edge Blending feature offers landscape and portrait screen experiences, meaning two of The Freestyle 2^nd Gen projectors can be paired to give a 160” panoramic and 120” vertical viewing experience[5]. What is more, with complete access to the Samsung Gaming Hub, users of The Freestyle 2^nd Gen can enjoy the biggest games from Samsung’s streaming partners[6].

In partnership with Xbox and Bethesda Softworks, this now includes Starfield, the stunning, next-generation role-playing game set amongst the stars. Playable through the Samsung Gaming Hub with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, without the need for a console[7].

Taking small steps for our planet 

Samsung is committed to developing products and services that help people save money and take steps towards a better planet. These topics are high on the agenda for consumers too, over three quarters (77%) say they seek out tech products that save energy – not only to save money, but for the benefit of the environment too[8]. Two-thirds (67%) also consider it important that their next appliance can connect to an app that allows them to monitor and reduce their energy consumption[9].

With energy prices increasing across Europe[10], 72% of those asked are concerned about the cost of running appliances in their home[11]. To help combat this, SmartThings Energy can help users optimise the energy used across their appliances to suit their needs and lower usage. For example, AI Energy Mode in SmartThings Energy allows you to monitor and reduce your washing machine’s energy use by up to 70%[12] by using Ecobubble to wash with cool water instead of warm.

Samsung has also partnered with global ocean conservation organisation Ocean Wise and apparel maker Patagonia to find solutions to the issue of microfiber shedding. The Less Microfiber Filter is an external washing machine filter that cuts up to 98% of microplastic emissions from laundry cycles[13]. Speaking at IFA, Charlie Cox, Manager of Microplastic Solutions at Ocean Wise said: “Through our collaboration with Samsung and Patagonia, Ocean Wise is proud to have shown a way for industry to play its part in stemming the flow of microfibers into the ocean. Through innovations like the Less Microfiber Filter, we can empower individuals to reduce their microfiber footprint at home. It is a simple, everyday solution that our oceans will thank us for.”

Heating technologies like heat pumps represent a rapidly growing market, and Samsung is at the forefront of this growth. Its innovative smart air source heat pumps have seen an unprecedented 97% growth in sales since 2022^[14]. These work with domestic hot water tanks or with Samsung’s ClimateHub, to make your home comfortable all year round, whatever the weather. They can also connect to the SmartThings ecosystem, so their energy use can be monitored and tailored to the user’s preferred environment[15]. The latest addition to its range of high temperature monobloc heat pump solutions, the EHS Mono R290, launches in September.

Samsung’s journey is constantly evolving as it aims to design technology that helps people make the most of their day while taking small steps to reduce our environmental impact. The Galaxy Z Flip5[16] and Fold5[17] and the Galaxy Tab S9[18] series feature a variety of recycled materials, including recycled aluminium, glass and plastics sourced from ocean-bound discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. All of these Galaxy innovations come in packaging boxes made using recycled paper material[19].

Watching their home while they aren’t there (54%), feeling safer when home alone (39%) and keeping their family safe when they are out of the house (39%) are seen as the key safety benefits of smart technology[20].

The Yale Linus® Smart Lock and the new Smart Opener for Gate & Garage enable doors and gates to be locked remotely via the app to ensure peace of mind for all family members.

Unlocking the future through smart technology 

Samsung is invested in a future built around the possibilities that technology can unlock. One area it aims to make a difference is in making the technology for smart homes more easily available. The research shows a quarter of Europeans consider the inclusion of smart technology to be a key factor in the desirability of their next home and over three quarters of respondents said fully functional smart homes are appealing (77%)[21].
