Samsung Pay Arrives for Starling Bank Customers, Offering an Easy and Secure Way to Make Mobile Payments

London, May 2018. Starling Bank, the leading mobile-only bank recently voted Britain’s Best British Bank 2018, has partnered with Samsung Electronics and announced today that Samsung Pay is now available to Starling customers.

This means that Starling customers with Samsung devices will now be able to use Samsung Pay as a fast and secure way to pay almost anywhere that contactless payments are accepted and without ever having to get their card from their wallet.

Samsung Pay is easy to use. Customers launch it by swiping up from the bottom edge of their smartphone screen. They can use iris, fingerprint or PIN to prove their identity, and simply tap their device on a payment terminal to make a payment. Samsung Pay allows customers to use contactless payment for transactions over £30, subject to merchant policies. Samsung Pay also offers exclusive functionality with TfL, that allows users to set a payment card up as ‘transport card’ to use on all TfL services and most National Rail services in London, allowing them to simply tap their phone against the card reader, eliminating the need to wake their phone.

Samsung customers who do not yet have a Starling account, can open one in a matter of minutes and for free, after downloading the app from the Google Play Store.

London, UK – 5^th March 2018 – Samsung Electronics today announced that its digital wallet, Samsung Pay, is now available to Danske Bank card holders in Northern Ireland. This marks the first local bank to partner with Samsung to support the service, which enables customers to make purchases directly in a safe, simple and convenient way.

Since launching last year, Samsung has focused on building the functionalities of the service to provide the best possible user experience. Key capabilities include:

Simplicity: With Samsung Pay every transaction is easy and convenient.* Samsung Pay uses Near Field Communication (NFC) making the user experience seamless. Users can launch Samsung Pay with a simple swipe from the bottom edge of their screen to bring up the last used credit or debit card, use their iris, pin or fingerprint to prove their identity, and tap their device on a payment terminal to make a payment. Samsung Pay allows customers to use contactless payment for transactions over £30 (subject to merchant policies).

Security: Samsung is committed to ensuring its customers have complete piece of mind when it comes to mobile payments. Each transaction is authenticated by fingerprint, pin number or iris scan, and uses an encrypted digital token to replace sensitive card information help prevent fraud. Additionally, Samsung’s industry-leading Knox security platform is built into the hardware and software of your device, which ensures mobile information and data is secure.

Access (Almost Anywhere): Samsung Pay is accepted almost anywhere you can use your contactless credit or debit card in the UK.

• TFL FUNCTIONALITY: Samsung has worked with TfL on functionality for Samsung Pay that allows users to set a payment card up as ‘transport card’ to use on all TfL services and most National Rail services in London, allowing them to simply tap their phone against the card reader, eliminating the need to wake their phone or verify with a fingerprint or passcode.

• LOYALTY CARDS: Users are able to upload their loyalty cards at selected merchants across the UK, to accumulate and redeem points.

• NEAR FIELD COMMUNICATION (NFC) and MAGNETIC SECURE TRANSMISSION (MST): Near Field Communication (NFC) allows two devices placed within a few inches of each other to exchange information. NFC payments require merchants to upgrade their old terminals to NFC-enabled payment terminals. Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) sends a magnetic signal from a compatible device to the payment terminal’s card reader (to emulate swiping a physical payment card). Both technologies are equally secure, using a unique digital card number in place of your actual payment card’s number. Your information is kept private and secure, and only your bank and the card’s payment network will have information on the transaction. In the UK, Samsung Pay uses NFC to send payment information to the terminal. The transaction is seamless, allowing for a better user experience.
