The project was the first time that a runway collection had been presented as a “visual concept album” and featured 13 iconic looks inspired by 13 iconic songs. The 13 stills and 13 explosive fashion film shorts were shot by globally renowned fashion image-maker Nick Knight, while an accompanying series of virtual landscapes were created by pioneering digital artist Jon Emmony. Featuring an incredible cast of artists, activists and change-makers from across the UK; from Musicians Rina Sawayama, to The Royal Ballet’s principal dancer Matthew Ball, it was a ground-breaking mix of fashion and entertainment.

To achieve maximum impact the project was shown in super-size using Samsung’s cutting-edge display solution The Wall.

“From the outset we hoped to create what might be described as ‘a digital fantasia,’ and so we sought out a collaboration with some of the world’s leading image makers and digital artists,” explains Gareth Pugh. “When it came to presenting this work to the public for the first time, it made perfect sense to also seek out world class technology to bring this all to life. The Wall was really the centrepiece of our exhibition, in that this was the first time we presented ‘The Reconstruction’ film content to the public, taking them on a journey from conception to completion — a portal through which to experience new worlds.”

Crucially, none of the looks created by Pugh are now for sale: instead they have been re-imagined via a jersey capsule collection designed in collaboration with emerging designer Melissa Mehrtens. This launched alongside the art project and are being sold online in exclusive partnership with HIT + RUN – a new online retail platform promoting a zero-waste model.

The project was an entirely non-profit venture, with all proceeds going to Refuge. Fundraising for the charity was driven by ticket sales to an accompanying live exhibition taking place at Christie’s London across London Fashion Week.

Zurich, 20 March 2018 – The movie screen and traditional projection technology are a thing of the past! The Samsung Cinema LED screen with 24 million LEDs illuminates a huge area of 10.2 meters in width to 5.4 meters in height. With unprecedented color brilliance, luminosity and sharpness, viewing pleasure in cinemas is greatly increased further. In addition, there is a new sound system with perfect surround sound at every seat. The innovative screen is not only celebrating its European premiere in Zurich. Thanks to 3D equipment, Switzerland’s film city is also home to the world’s first 3D LED cinema.

The brand-new Cinema LED technology is currently only available as a prototype in Seoul, near Samsung headquarters. Now the Samsung Cinema LED screen is celebrating its European premier in Switzerland.

Together with Samsung, the innovative Swiss entrepreneur and owner of Arena Cinemas Edi Stöckli is installing Europe’s first Cinema LED screen in a movie theater. Mr. Stöckli’s cinema complex Arena Sihlcity will be the first one, in the heart of the film city Zurich.

New possibilities of interior design are created thanks to elimination of the projector beam and the high luminosity of the Samsung Cinema LED screens. Edi Stöckli, owner of Arena Cinemas, added: “We have removed the complete furnishings, implemented an innovative seating concept and consequently are providing the audience with the ultimate cinematic experience.”

Thanks to the DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative) certification, the system also has the blessing of Hollywood. As a result, nothing stands in the way of enjoying Hollywood blockbusters in unimagined quality.

LED technology takes the cinema experience to a new level

The 10.2 times 5.4 meters large cinema LED screen consists of 96 individual modules, which can be replaced individually. The impression of a solid black wall is created thanks to the seamless installation and high-precision calibration. Consequently, ‘true black’ makes the movie theater pitch dark, because there are no reflections anymore.

The special format of 4,096 times 2,160 pixels (4K ‘full’) enables      of the two customary cinema formats ‘flat’ and ‘scope’. This can be done without the disturbing dark gray stripes, which are known from projectors. Because there is no projection beam, black is really deep black here. The image is always sharp and precisely aligned in all areas.

The luminosity of the wall is 10 times stronger than with conventional projectors. Thanks to LED technology, a luminous intensity of up to 146 fL (foot-lambert) or 500 nit is achieved – and this with reduced average power consumption compared to a conventional projector.

Contents produced in High Dynamic Range (HDR) format can be played optimally thanks to the high contrast range. Color brilliance is maintained even in the brightest scenes. All details are still visible even in the darkest scenes. 3D films are also shown to their full advantage with this. 3D and LED, an absolute novelty in the cinema world. The ARENA Cinema in Zurich is the world’s first 3D LED cinema!

The audio specialists JBL and HARMAN are supplying the associated immersive sound technology. JBL’s ‘Sculpted Surround’ system and the innovative design of the speakers create a clear and natural surround sound that is evenly distributed throughout the room.

Samsung is working with a number of high-profile chains & theatres to bring this new technology to UK cinema-goers in 2018.

Breaching limits

Thanks to the equipping with many interfaces customary with Samsung and known from professional screen field, the connection of external players is made possible for information, advertising, presentations and games. The Samsung Cinema LED Screen is optimally prepared for secondary uses, which is becoming increasingly important for cinema operators.

Especially practical, the cinema screen is designed for 24/7 operation. A Refined Infinity Display

Both the 5.8-inch Galaxy S9 and the 6.2-inch S9+ feature Samsung’s latest Super AMOLED Infinity Displays, which feature key refinements that magnify the beauty and immersive qualities of the Galaxy smartphones’ signature screen.

The Infinity Display is characterized by its smooth, spacious design, which seamlessly curves at the edges to blend into the Galaxy S9’s body and lends the device its beautiful, highly ergonomic form. Films, shows and video clips are captivating when viewed on the 18.5:9, HDR (High Dynamic Range) capable display, whose impeccable accuracy allows such content to be presented exactly as creators intended.

When designing the new displays, Samsung focused on adjustments that would enable users to enjoy even more engrossing viewing experiences. This led Samsung to trim down the already small bezels at the top and bottom of the device, and make the screen itself a deeper black, so as to blend in with the bezels when the device is off. The bezels have also been refined to conceal features that could possibly detract from users’ immersion, such as the device’s iris sensor.

Adaptive Contrast Enhancement is another immersion-amplifying addition that allows the display to provide crisp visuals even in direct sunlight. This offers users more freedom to comfortably consume the content they want, when they want.

To make using the device even more comfortable, the Galaxy S9 also introduces a new Landscape Mode, which allows the home screen and app tray to adjust their orientation when the phone is held at an angle. This feature is particularly useful when a user who is watching a video navigates to the home screen to find another app.

The durability of the devices’ screens and bodies has also been enhanced. In addition to utilizing a high-strength aluminum alloy that offers protection from external impacts, Samsung reinforced both phones with thicker Corning© Gorilla© Glass 5 on their fronts, as well as more scratch-resistant side metal frames.

Cinematic Sound

Because smartphones are increasingly becoming our go-to platforms for entertainment, a top-flight display alone won’t quite cut it. In order to enjoy a truly cinematic mobile viewing experience, we need a premium sound system to complement the display – one that makes it easy for us to immerse ourselves in whatever content we’re consuming.

Edge Lighting Notifications add a new layer of utility to this function by allowing users to easily manage incoming messages while enjoying their favorite content.

With Edge Lighting Notifications, once a message comes in, users are presented with an icon that they may pull down to instantly launch a Multi-Window. This allows them to view their message and compose a reply without needing to navigate away from the website that they were viewing, or falling behind in their movie, show or game.

That multi-app versatility is also the key benefit of App Pair, a convenient feature that quickly became a fan favourite when it was introduced on the Galaxy Note8. App Pair lets users create custom pairs of apps that they can launch simultaneously from the Edge panel or their home screen.
