The hinge serves as the central axis for opening and closing the phone. [2019] Galaxy Fold

The Dawn of Foldable Phones: Folding and Unfolding

Thickness when folded: 15.7-17.1mm Thickness when unfolded: 6.9-7.6mm Weight: 276g

As user lifestyles continue to diversify, so too do their needs. Samsung has consistently introduced advanced technologies each year to meet these changes. First unveiled in 2019, the Galaxy Fold featured a ground-breaking form factor — the first to deliver a natural, big-screen experience when unfolded and a compact, portable experience when folded. The act of “folding and unfolding” emerged as a new category of mobile interaction, and Samsung applied never-before-seen hinge technology to ensure this functionality felt natural and intuitive.

The inward-folding hinge not only felt familiar and easy to use, but it also provided robust display protection. The phone could be smoothly opened like a book, yet stay flat and thin when folded. The palm-sized dimensions were key to its convenience. With the first Galaxy Fold, Samsung achieved a maximum folded thickness of just 17.1 millimetres and ushered in the era of smart foldables.

[2020] Galaxy Z Fold2

The Era of FlexMode: Hideaway Hinge and Sweeper Technology

Thickness when folded: 13.8-16.8mm Thickness when unfolded: 6.0-6.9mm Weight: 282g

In 2020, the successor to the pioneering Galaxy Fold was released. The Galaxy Z Fold2 took foldables to the next level with an all-new sophisticated and refined design. The most notable of its several innovative features was the Hideaway Hinge, which seamlessly connected the body of the smartphone while supporting stable folding and unfolding. Users could mount the Galaxy Z Fold2 at various angles with the Hideaway Hinge to easily take selfies and make video calls in FlexMode.

The Hideaway Hinge’s more than sixty parts made the innovative dual CAM mechanism a reality. The flat surface between two ridge-shaped parts, CAM helped keep the device open or closed and enabled FlexMode. By increasing the number of CAM structures and springs, the hinge could reliably support wider angles. The Hideaway Hinge was mounted on an optimal location on the Galaxy Z Fold2 for an even slimmer design and a maximum folded thickness of just 16.8 millimetres.

Since the hinge was constantly folded when the device was opened or closed, there was an inevitable gap between the front of the device and the hinge housing. To effectively minimise this gap, Samsung needed to develop a component that would be long-lasting and elastic without adding extra bulk. Inspired by the brush of a vacuum cleaner, Samsung made use of delicately cut optical fibres to address this issue: Sweeper Technology. Sweeper Technology protected the phone’s display from external dust and debris that could enter through the gap, providing a more fluid foldable device experience.

[2021] Galaxy Z Fold3

The Solution to the Foldable Phone’s Biggest Challenge: Waterproofing

Thickness when folded: 14.4-16.0mm Thickness when unfolded: 6.4mm Weight: 271g

It’s a given that today’s smartphones are waterproof. However, the hinge that opened and closed the screen on foldables would always be exposed to the elements. If liquids such as beverages or even rainwater leaked inside, the device would be at risk of immediate malfunction.

The Galaxy Z Fold3 was the first foldable to be water resistant, one of the biggest challenges that previous foldable devices faced. Samsung’s waterproofing technology was applied to two areas — the outer part of the display and the hinge. The outer part of the display was surrounded by a rubber band that prevented dust and liquid from entering, whereas the metal parts of the hinge were made of corrosion-resistant materials and coated with a long-lasting lubricant. The terminal connecting the two mainboards bordering the hinge was sealed with a silicone-based cured-in-place gasket (CIPG) that prevented liquid from entering the device. Additionally, flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) cables were used to protect sensitive components.

A robust material that withstands external shock and reduces the risk of deformities or scratches, Armor Aluminum was used to help the Galaxy Z Fold3 achieve an even thinner and lighter form factor.

Armor Aluminum was applied to the two edges that make up the exterior and to the housing that surrounds the hinge. Various components were densely packed inside the Galaxy Z Fold3’s Hideaway Hinge to enable FlexMode and ensure smooth opening and closing. To support these functions, the hinge housing needed to be made from sturdy materials.

The Sweeper Technology that closed the gap between the hinge and the body of the foldable evolved too. As the device became slimmer, the sweeper’s bristles were shortened to improve aesthetics while still keeping the hinge safe from dust and external particles. These innovations allowed the Galaxy Z Fold3 to be as thin as 16.0 millimetres when folded.

[2022] Galaxy Z Fold4

From Rotating to Linear: A Slimmer, Lighter Hinge

Thickness when folded: 14.2-15.8mm Thickness when unfolded: 6.3mm Weight: 263g

Unveiled in 2022, the Galaxy Z Fold4 saw a significant reduction in weight and thickness. At 263 grams, the device weighed nearly 20 grams less than the Galaxy Z Fold2 at 282 grams. The maximum folded thickness was 15.8 millimetres, making this foldable the thinnest in the series at the time. Once again, Samsung loaded its signature foldable with innovation — resulting in an easy-to-grip, thin and lightweight body.

Redesigned to be 21% lighter than its predecessor, the new hinge of the Galaxy Z Fold4 accommodated the wider width and shorter length of the Cover Screen. While the previous foldable in the series used interlocking gears to ensure even screen folding and unfolding, the Galaxy Z Fold4 changed the hinge motion from rotary to linear. This adjustment drastically reduced weight, thickness and the number of parts, which streamlined manufacturing and improved the device’s resilience. With the Galaxy Z Fold4, Samsung built its slimmest, lightest hinge at the time while upholding the same level of durability as the previous form factor.

[2023] Galaxy Z Fold5

FlexHinge: The Secret to a Fully Foldable Phone

Thickness when folded: 13.4mm Thickness when unfolded: 6.1mm Weight: 253g

In 2023, the Galaxy Z Fold5 introduced the world to the next generation of foldable smartphones. Moving away from the traditional Hideaway Hinge, Samsung unveiled a new type of mechanism called the FlexHinge — demonstrating a leap forward in foldable innovation. With improved flexibility and a wide range of features, the FlexHinge made it possible for the display to curl into the hinge like a water droplet using four drive shafts and a dual rail structure that allowed parts to glide along it. Thanks to this hinge technology, the two screens could be evenly folded without any creases or gaps.

This new folding mechanism resulted in the lightest and thinnest Galaxy Z Fold series device yet. More than two millimetres thinner than its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold5’s maximum thickness is 13.4 millimetres when folded. The foldable also weighs 253 grams — 10 grams lighter than its predecessor — making it more compact, portable and stable when folded. The phone’s sleek, solid shape could be appreciated from any angle.

Each year, Samsung refines the Galaxy Z Fold series by leveraging precise engineering and meticulous manufacturing processes. Every detail is studied carefully, from internal mechanisms to exterior design. Reimagining the hinges and device thickness — core attributes of the foldable — has enhanced the utility of the Galaxy Z Fold series immensely. The Galaxy Z Fold has been a pioneer in transforming everyday productivity through a robust, big screen experience, evolving from Multi Window^[16] and App Continuity^[17] to a wide range of features including Taskbar^[18], drag and drop, and optimisation of third-party apps. S Pen Fold Edition^[19] introduced in the third generation Fold in 2021, has also been fine-tuned to deliver a superior writing experience on Galaxy Z Fold5. Last year, I expanded my responsibilities as head of Samsung’s MX Business, to lead our Corporate Design Center. My career as an engineer taught me that the most sublime designs are intertwined with technological innovation. Bespoke AI Washer automatically identifies fabric types and dirt levels, optimising its performance accordingly, while cycles themselves can be controlled with Samsung’s SmartThings app. Bespoke AI Dryer uses sensors and algorithms to measure the moisture content of clothes, adjusting drying time and temperature to seamlessly optimise drying cycles. The Bespoke AI Laundry pair responds to frequent washing habits for a highly personalised experience, and the laundry pair has a range of colour choices to help inspire more ways to customise home laundry spaces.

SmartThings Energy – Recognised in the Software & Mobile Apps category, Samsung’s SmartThings Energy app provides an effortless solution for consumers to reduce home energy consumption. In addition to tracking energy usage, SmartThings Energy offers actionable insights and recommendations based on the devices connected to the platform and usage pattern.

Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink SSD 2TB – As an Innovation Awards Honoree in the Computer Peripherals & Accessories category, the Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink SSD 2TB is the company’s fastest PCIe 4.0 solid state drive (SSD) with superior power efficiency. Designed for gaming consoles or PCs, it delivers lightning-fast speeds for faster loading times. The combination of a heatsink, nickel coating on the controller and Samsung’s Dynamic Thermal Guard maximises the cooling effects to prevent performance degradation due to overheating. The drive is also equipped with RGB lights to match the style of any setup.

Samsung Automotive NVMe BGA SSD 1TB (AM991) – This breakthrough advancement provides the industry’s highest sequential read speed for automotive storage, as well as an exceptionally large operational capacity for AD/ADAS, cockpit and vehicular infotainment systems. Earning recognition in the In-Vehicle Entertainment & Safety category, it also features the highest sustainable automotive write speed of up to 1150MB/s thanks to Samsung V-NAND technology, a proprietary in-house controller and an exclusive firmware design, while functioning safely in even the most in-climate weather (-40’C to 105’C).

Samsung 512GB CXL Memory Expander – Recognised in the Computer Hardware & Components category, Samsung’s 512GB CXL Memory Expander module will be the first memory device that supports the eagerly-awaited CXL 2.0 interface and will come in an EDSFF (E3.S) form factor ― especially suitable for next-generation high-capacity enterprise servers and data centers. This new memory module is built with an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) CXL controller, using DDR5 DRAM to support maximum bandwidth and capacity and for the first time, enabling memory to scale beyond tens of terabytes with the processing demands of big data and AI/ML workloads.

Samsung 16GB LPDDR5X and 1TB UFS 3.1 Multi-Chip Package – In the first integration of 14nm-based 16GB LPDDR5X DRAM and Samsung’s seventh-generation quad-level cell (QLC) V-NAND 1TB UFS (Universal Flash Storage) 3.1, this uMCP is providing a giant industry-leading leap forward. Honoured in the Embedded Technologies category, the integrated UFS-based multichip package is taking the industry toward higher-density, higher-speed and low-power memory for premium smartphones and other leading IT applications.

Samsung ISOCELL HP3 CMOS Image Sensor – As a state-of-the-art mobile sensor with a 1/1.4-inch optical format and 0.56㎛pixel size for slimmer camera designs, the Samsung ISOCELL HP3 was honoured in the Digital Imaging/Photography category. It features the smallest pixel technology in mobile cameras for greater design convenience and 200 megapixels that deliver the most detailed images available. The Tetra²pixel technology allows the pixels to operate in a 1.12㎛ or 2.24㎛ size, capturing more light information in low light and taking 8K video with minimal loss in the field of view. Furthermore, using Super QPD technology, the ISOCELL HP3 can detect autofocus information horizontally and vertically.

Samsung W920+RF 6550 Next-gen Enhancement for Wearables – Recognised in the Wearable Technologies category, Samsung’s Exynos W920 System on a Chip (SoC) and Exynos RF 6550 connectivity solution is a next-generation tandem offering that adds a new dimension to wearable devices. The Exynos W920 processor, built on a 5-nanometer (nm) Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) process node, includes an LTE modem and provides the performance demanded by next-generation wearable devices with a powerful GPU and dual-core CPU. The companion RF 6550 chip, built on a 28nm process, integrates Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GNSS connectivity with the utmost reliability into the Exynos W920 design.

The universal greater than symbol (>) represents how our foldables’ unique form factor doesn’t just change shape, they change how we interact with our devices.

Defying expectations of what smartphones are capable of yet again, Samsung is bringing new ways to work, play and capture life through this new series.

Bringing the Best of Hybrid

This year’s strategy embraces a new age of Unpacked. It takes the best of on and offline events and makes them even better.

I have worked my entire career as an engineer, and I have seen many innovations at Samsung that have pushed the limits of what’s possible with smartphones. Our mission is, and always has been, to create technology that makes people’s lives better. Ten years ago, we set out to create a transformative technology by looking at the one thing all smartphones were synonymous with — a flat rectangular display. We asked ourselves a simple question:How can we have it all – a bigger screen and better portability?  

We saw an opportunity not only to design a new shape but also to create new experiences that had never been possible with a smartphone before. Overcoming many technological hurdles, we successfully introduced the first-ever Galaxy foldable smartphone in 2019 and have changed the future of our industry ever since.

Last year, we saw almost 10 million foldable smartphones shipped worldwide. That’s an industry increase of more than 300% from 2020, and I predict this fast-paced growth will continue. We are reaching the moment where these foldable devices are becoming widespread and staking a bigger claim in the overall smartphone market.

More importantly, Samsung Galaxy foldables have changed the way we use mobile devices and helped enable better lifestyles for users worldwide.

As Lifestyles Evolve, a New Legacy Unfolds

The world is more connected than ever and is moving at a much faster pace. Work and play intermix, and the lines between the physical and digital world have blurred. Where we turn for work, entertainment, wellness and more has become a single place — our phone. As such, our users need a flexible device to keep up with their daily demands.

The Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Flip deliver on that mandate. Last year, 70% of Galaxy foldable users turned to the Flip to help them see the world from a different point of view. Flip users love owning a device built for self-expression, whether choosing bold colour options for their device or taking pictures in a new way with Flex mode.

It’s a different experience with the Fold. Nearly one out of three Galaxy foldable users last year opted for this ultimate productivity device, which has empowered them to do more through hyper-connected, individual computing. Fold users love the multitasking capability of a screen that doubles in size, so they can be more efficient and get things done faster.

Both foldable users have enthusiastically embraced what we have created. Their response is our biggest motivation to push forward, and that’s why we are committed to this journey of seeking new possibilities for mobile innovation.

This year, we’ve made advancements in every detail and opened the new experiences enabled by these behavior-shifting devices. I am excited to see people to discover new ways to do more of the things they love with the new foldable.
