Supporting Marine Ecosystems Through Global Collaboration

Introduced at Galaxy Unpacked in January 2025, Coral in Focus is an initiative launched last year that supports local communities, including Fiji, Indonesia and the United States, to restore coastal ecosystems.

Samsung has partnered with Seatrees, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to restoring marine ecosystems, to explore, new, innovative solutions for coral reef restoration. The company has introduced Ocean Mode¹ on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, an exclusive camera feature that enables vivid image capture even underwater. These images provide accurate visual data for marine researchers who create 3D photogrammetry models to continuously monitor and analyse coral reefs. Local partner organisations then use these findings to guide their on-site coral restoration efforts.

Ocean Mode: How Galaxy Camera Innovation Is Helping Marine Researchers

Partners and local field teams use Ocean Mode to reduce the excessive blue tones common in underwater photography, allowing for a more accurate representation of coral colours. The feature also helps minimise motion blur through optimised shutter speed and multi-frame image processing. Additionally, the interval shooting function enables thousands of high-resolution coral images to be captured in a single session — improving both efficiency and image clarity.

With these coral restoration initiatives, photos taken with Ocean Mode have been used to produce 17 3D models of coral reefs to analyse the health and growth of reefs. In total, 11,046 coral fragments were planted to restore 10,705 square meters of coral reef habitat — roughly the size of 25 basketball courts.

Since unveiling its “Galaxy for the Planet” environmental vision in 2021, through recycling plastic from discarded fishing nets into its smartphones to providing cutting-edge camera technology, Samsung has continually increased its efforts to support marine researchers. Samsung implemented optimised software and technology to support filming and transmitting this first-of-its-kind footage in collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) and other Olympic partners.

Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones were installed on the boats used in the sailing events. For kitesurfing and windsurfing, Galaxy smartphones were attached to each athlete’s shoulder and buoys in the water. With this new viewing experience, sailing fans never missed a beat.

This presented a whole new set of challenges and months of research, development and testing – in close collaboration with the OBS and other Olympic tech partners – to guarantee video quality and connectivity performance across various bodies of water and weather conditions, which can be really windy with huge waves or extremely hot and sunny. Samsung and its partners addressed these challenges by leveraging the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Optical image stabilisation (OIS) features, increasing transmission power, and installing relay towers on chase boat to ensure a seamless livestream experience for viewers.

LONDON, UK – 2^nd April 2024 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd: In an exciting partnership between Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and The British Photography Awards, the winners of the UK’s Mobile Photography Awards 2024 have been revealed.

For the month of February, a free-to-enter competition ran across the UK, inviting those with any mobile device to be in with a chance of winning Samsung tech and to have their work nationally showcased.

In six distinct categories, participants displayed their creative efforts, capturing everyday scenarios, straight from their smartphone of choice. These included Zoom In and Night Scenes, where Samsung Galaxy users in particular could maximise their devices’ incredible zoom and low-light capabilities.

What’s New: Explore Galaxy AI Through Widgets and Tutorials

The updated Try Galaxy app simulates the experience of looking at an actual Galaxy S24 home screen. Once users are in the app, tutorials and interactive content help them navigate the latest interface.

The new widget on the second page of the home screen introduces the core AI-powered features^[2] of the Galaxy S24 series and its advanced camera tools. Users can tap each item to watch short demonstration videos explaining the features and how they’re applied in daily life. Check marks appear next to the completed items so users can track their progress.

Below is an overview of the new AI features spotlighted in the widget:

• Live Translate: Communicate without language barriers using the real-time, two-way call translation feature built into the native app. Effortlessly get in touch with a ride-share driver or make a restaurant reservation in a foreign country with voice and text translations of phone calls, supported in 13 languages.^[3]

• Note Assist^[4]: Take notes as usual, but now receive instant AI-generated summaries to help streamline and organise notes. Turn dense paragraphs into bullet points with headers for easy review. The feature allows for automatic formatting, spell check and translations.

• Chat Assist^[5]: Refine the tone of any text message for the occasion, ranging from professional to casual. Send polished meeting agendas to the boss, and chat with international friends in Spanish. The AI built into the Samsung Keyboard can also translate messages in real-time in 13 languages² so that users can communicate better across cultural and language barriers.

• Photo Assist: Get the perfect shot with the help of Generative Edit^[6], an AI tool that allows users to resize, reposition or even remove objects within photos. Tweak the composition of a photo in an instant with Edit Suggestion. Use the Erase Reflection tool to automatically remove unwanted shadows and light reflections.

• Circle to Search with Google^[7]: With a circling gesture, search for anything displayed on screen without switching apps. When users spot something they like in a social media post, they can simply long-press the home button and draw a circle around the image to get instant and helpful search results about the coveted item. Depending on the location, generative AI-powered overviews will be provided.

In addition to the AI features, the widget sheds light on the Galaxy S24 series’ advanced camera tools. Through immersive tutorial videos shot from first-person perspective, users can learn how to take clear, bright photos at night from far away using Nightography Zoom, record steady videos of subjects moving at high speed with the Super Steady feature and shoot impressive portraits and selfies in Portrait mode.

While on the app, users can also check out the new Galaxy Themes or background images beyond Wallpapers, offered on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. As a bonus, three types of Art Wallpapers including graffiti and pop art are available for download.

It functions as an independent wireless speaker or can be paired with a Samsung TV and soundbar via the Q-Symphony feature to enrich surround sound capabilities and enrich bass. The Music Frame blends into the living space, disguising itself as a picture frame to both complement your décor and deliver rich surround sound in unison.

Upgrading the connected home with AI-powered appliances

Samsung’s BESPOKE appliances will also be showcased at ‘World at Samsung’, providing amplified user convenience through enhanced connectivity and AI integration. Featuring sleek designs along with the latest AI capabilities, BESPOKE home appliances offer futuristic style and added functionality for the modern home.

The new Family Hub Refrigerator boasts new unique capabilities, such as AI Vision inside^[7],Enjoy a smart way to manage your food. Using an internal camera^[8], AI Vision Inside can identify certain fresh food items when put in or taken out and allows you to manage a food list^[9] that can also be checked from the SmartThings app^[10]. You can view door bin images, get recipe suggestions, or manage ‘Use by date’ by manually setting the date.

Other appliances in the BESPOKE range also leverage latest advancements in AI. Thanks to a new circulation pump and AI enhancements to the software algorithms, the new Bespoke AI washing machine, now exceeds the minimum A Grade energy efficiency requirements by up to 40%^[11]. In addition the AI Wash feature uses 5 different sensors to intelligently adjust the washing performance for each load, for more thorough and efficient washing. In the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo, upgraded AI Object Recognition means it can now drive more precisely than ever by expanding the number of objects it can distinguish and comes with AI Floor Detect so it can detect different surfaces and adjust the cleaning power needed, (just like our Bespoke Jet AI stick vacuum cleaner.

Developing the Galaxy S24 series has been the most rewarding period of my career. As an engineer, I have witnessed many examples of incredible innovations, but AI is the most transformative technology of the century. Few engineers get the chance to be involved in something with such seismic potential. It brings great change, not only for Samsung and the mobile industry, but for all humankind.

When integrated into phones, AI, is to put it simply, a revolution. This is a new era for mobile experiences and Samsung Galaxy has a leading role to play in it. Since the launch of Galaxy S24 series, we’ve had great feedback about how people actually use Galaxy AI features in their daily lives. One of the most welcomed AI features is Circle to Search^[ii] with Google, an incredible new tool for intuitive discovery. Our communication tools for removing language barriers, such as Live Translate^[iii], Chat Assist^[iv] and Interpreter, have captured the imagination of many. People also love Photo Assist, our tools for creativity powered by our ProVisual Engine.

Again, we’re only getting started. While developing the Galaxy S24 series, we had many ideas and concepts that we wanted to bring to life. Galaxy users will be able to enjoy more Galaxy AI features that build on these ideas and concepts over time as Samsung continuously enhances and grows the mobile AI experiences^[v].

Moreover, we are already planning next steps for Galaxy AI beyond smartphones – optimising it for various categories of devices, across various services. In the near future, the select Galaxy wearables will use AI to enhance digital health and unlock a whole new era of expanded intelligent health experiences. Over the past year, we frequently asked ourselves what users want or need and what they could achieve with a little assistance. These questions inspired the Galaxy S24 series, our first AI phone that invites users to imagine how their lives could change thanks to AI. Of course, there are challenges and responsibilities to consider. AI models in training are still susceptible to hallucinations, and the debate on intellectual property rights continues. Galaxy S24’s Live Translate translates phone conversations in real time, ensuring you’ll be as clear, creative and professional with overseas colleagues or clients as you’d be in your own language^[2]. Offered in 13 languages at launch^[3], Live Translate provides two-way translation on both devices, even if one party isn’t using a Galaxy – or even a smartphone.

Translated and tailored tone for professional emails or texts: It’s your first day in a new job, and you want to make a good impression in your first email to your colleagues.

With Galaxy S24’s Chat Assist, you’re offered different AI-generated options on how to restructure your message and writing style, so you get the tone just right^[4]. Whether it’s drafting a catchy social media post or a formal email to your boss, this feature is accessible right from the Samsung Keyboard, so you can use it on any application and make sure you hit the appropriate note every time. And if you’re working with a colleague overseas, Chat Assist’s availability in 13 languages2 allows you to do all this in a language you don’t even speak^[5].

Converse face-to-face without language barriers: As a small business owner attending an expo on emerging market trends, you spot a renowned expert in your niche from a popular YouTube business page. You want to pick her brain, but you know from the show that she speaks Italian, and you don’t.

Interpreter takes live translation out of the call app and into the physical world. With this feature, Galaxy S24 becomes a real-time, in-person translator. Because the tool splits the phone screen into two horizontally, each person can show instantly translated text to the other, along with accompanying audio. It also lets you select the language you need and communicate smoothly and professionally with anyone around you.

Organise Your Phone and Your Thoughts

Although our phones provide a handy way to capture ideas, research projects and arrange meetings, organising all that on a handheld device can be a challenge. Using responsive Galaxy AI capabilities, however, Galaxy S24 intelligently organises your phone, so you stay focused on the big picture.

Keep your documents and plans organised: Deep into a work project, you realise the relevant resources you need are scattered everywhere: long emails, detailed articles, PDFs and more. If you could pull everything together into one cohesive format, it would save you hours of laborious notetaking and file conversion.

Thanks to the Note Assist feature, you can generate, read and save abridged versions of all your materials in a few taps of your finger, transforming the daily churn of documents into a well-structured archive^[6]. By pulling up a document, Note Assist prompts you to save its content straight to your Samsung Notes app. Once there, the feature can auto format the text and correct spelling mistakes before creating a simple or detailed bullet point summary of the whole document above the main text so you can see all the key points at a glance whenever you need to.

The feature can also extract and summarise text straight from physical books and papers and can translate notes into other languages, while its Browsing Assist capabilities can turn long, detailed articles into succinct summaries.

Accurately document everything: It’s a classic dilemma: You’re in an important work meeting, and you need to take detailed notes while at the same time staying focused and making contributions. With Galaxy S24, you can have it both ways.

Transcript Assist creates full, accurate records of meetings and conversations. Simply record the meeting using the native Samsung voice recording app, and afterwards Transcript Assist will offer to convert it to text, with sentences separated according to individual speakers^[7]. Once you’ve got your transcript, you can share it with your colleagues as is, or send it to Samsung Notes and add an AI-generated bullet summary to it using Note Assist.

If you have pre-existing audio files recorded without Transcript Assist, the feature can convert these files to notes using Text to Audio.
