If you’re planning to spend the day running up and down hills, throwing yourself into extremely cold water and getting unnecessarily muddy, you’re going to want to be able to capture it. Whether that’s as a keepsake, or because you need to prove to your friends that you actually did it. Not only do you need a smartphone that can handle a hefty amount of water and dirt, but you also want it to take pictures and videos worth keeping.

Samsung’s activation residency took place over two weekends at Tough Mudder London South, hosting both a Super Slow-mo selfie mud slide and the Mud Mile 2.0 obstacle. The focus of the experience was to showcase the impressive Super Slow-mo functionality of the handset, as well as its other features, including the fitness tracking capabilities of Samsung Health, along with the new Samsung Galaxy watch.

The Samsung Mud Mile, which sits halfway around the full Tough Mudder course, was one of over 20 obstacles spread out across the 10-mile route. Tired and drenched participants were welcomed to the daunting sight of the longest obstacle at the event, with mounds of wet, slippy mud looming over murky ditches into the distance.

Not to worry though, as dance music was provided by Samsung at the start of the obstacle, with a live DJ performing motivating tunes from the Samsung DJ booth, as people clambered and slid their way across the challenge. It may not have been the toughest obstacle at the event, but it was by far the muddiest, as well an opportune time to test out some Super Slow-mo splashing – much to the confused faces of the people stumbling past.

Participants could also test out the Super Slow-mo features of the Galaxy S9/+ by signing up and testing out the Samsung Super Slow-mo Mud Slide in the event village. The considerably less muddy activity saw people launching themselves down a wet slide on a blow-up rubber rings, as Galaxy S9/+ phones captured the movements from different locations. The impressive set up allowed users to input their details and receive the videos to their emails, which could then be posted on social with the hashtags #WithGalaxy and #GalaxyS9/+.

The IP68 water and dust resistance of the Galaxy S9/+ were put to the test across the course. The result of which, meant having the ability to capture epic moments throughout the event, much to the wary gasps of many other participants as the smartphones were brazenly pulled out mid-obstacle.

Whether you’re making new friends by pulling them over a wall or making memories with your oldest mates by making sure they get as wet and cold as possible, Tough Mudder is the place to do it. The Samsung team started as loose acquaintances but ended up as a firm team.

Meet Chris Fynes, a travel and food photographer and filmmaker from The Cotswolds. Amassing over 24,000 followers on his Instagram page, Chris has had a passion for photography from a young age, and when he began documenting his adventures in food, photography felt like the perfect way for him to express himself. Why did you start your Instagram page?

I actually started my Instagram on the night of a massive burger festival in London and I was using it to upload images of each burger and then share the image links on Twitter whilst live tweeting from the event! How times have changed, hey?

Have you always had an interest in photography?

I’ve always had a great affinity for photography and film and I’ve made it a mission to build a career in those industries. I think my brain is just wired to appreciate shapes and patterns and I constantly find myself lining up shots even when I don’t have a camera in hand.

What’s your best photography tip?

My best photography tip would be to shoot in Pro mode. It gives you so much more control over your images when editing and it’s why I love the Pro Mode on the Galaxy S9+. Take some time to get to know your camera and what settings work best for each environment or scene.

Why do you like shooting with a Samsung smartphone?

The Galaxy S9+ is my Samsung device of choice. First off the camera is superb and things like super slow-mo and Pro Mode give me more control over my results. The second is the expandable storage which means I can use memory cards to shoot imagery and film without worrying about clogging up the device.

What’s your favourite thing about Samsung smartphones?

That screen is second-to-none and is the perfect place to showcase your final shots. I’d love to create an art gallery where all the frames were in fact a Galaxy Note8 or S9+ and you could display your work on the phone.

If you could offer one piece of advice for photography novices, what would it be?

Shoot as often as possible and use the internet to help hone your craft. Everything I have learnt has been from reading or watching others and then heading out by myself or with friends to experiment with those new ideas. Once you find a style or method of capturing images that you are comfortable with, you will soon flourish and people will start recognising you for your work in that field.

Generally speaking, festivals are great fun. Losing your mates before you’ve even had the chance to utter the words ‘right by the massive speaker at  the main stage’, soaking up the atmosphere with great food and drink and being surrounded by hundreds of beautiful people in their flower crowns and crop tops – there’s not a lot to hate.

On top of that, you also get to see some of your favourite bands/DJs live. And while we’ve all got pretty good at capturing the perfect group picture, sometimes it’s nice to get one of the musicians you’ve trekked across a field to watch. For the memories, right? But as anyone who’s ever been to a festival will know, it’s virtually impossible to snap anything decent. Either you’re too far away, or the light is so rubbish you might as well be taking selfies in your pitch black tent.

What you really need to capture your best festival moment is technology that’ll do all the hard work for you. Enter Samsung’s Galaxy S9. I took the phone to All Points East, a new weekend festival in Victoria Park, East London, and used it to capture a variety of content throughout the day.

Naturally, the snaps of (soulful British singer) Sampha at 8pm turned out great – the sun was beginning to set and everything looked mesmerising. The Live Focus feature meant I could get some pretty awesome selfies in front of the set.

Where the camera really excelled, however, was in a hot, sweaty tent during Justice’s hour and a half set. It was dark and the stage moved consistently, shooting different coloured beams and lights into the audience. Chuck in a rowdy crowd, and you’ve got pretty tricky conditions – yet the phone took exceptional pictures. The rear camera features something called F1.5 aperture mode, and multi-frame noise reduction, which adapts to low and super bright light automatically –like the human eye.

What this means in reality is you literally don’t have to do anything. Simply press the middle button and your photos come out clear and bright – no post-production in four different apps needed. Video is equally impressive. Again, the camera adjusts and captures crystal-clear footage (that you’ll actually want to Instagram).

Of course, you don’t have to let everything be decided for you. The camera settings can be adjusted by hand, including the aperture (brightness) to get the picture just so. During The XX’s headline performance, I was standing on the Samsung platform (available to all festival-goers) from which you can see panoramic views over the main stage. I was pretty far back, and the stage was being doused in white light from either side. To get a clearer picture, I simply dragged the ‘lightbulb’ dial down until I could see more details in the background.

The other fun bit? Super Slow-motion video. There are two modes: the auto detect function (you tell the phone where to watch for movement) or manual mode (you just select when you want to record) – and off you go. For a festival, the latter is probably better because you don’t exactly have control over a moving crowd/band on stage. You can then share the videos as a gif, do things like reverse the video and set it as a moving wallpaper. Festival goers who haven’t brought their S9 handsets with them, can also head down to get their own Super Slow-mo selfie video at the Samsung platform with music and a cool backdrop.

Essentially, the possibilities are endless. Well, as long as you find your mates again.
