The BioActive Sensor delivers accurate and comprehensive health data and provides actionable insights and guidance which users can leverage during their health and wellness journey.

First introduced with the Galaxy Watch4, the BioActive Sensor uses a unique single chip that combines three powerful health sensors – Optical Heart Rate (PPG), Electrical Heart Signal (ECG) and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) – into one compact unit. Its streamlined design enhances performance and fits comfortably for increased accuracy and 24/7 usage. This helps users deepen their understanding, encourages action, and strengthens good habits to help them achieve their goals.

Our sensor provides insights across all aspects of health, but we’d like to highlight two key areas: sleep and body composition. Sleep is often an afterthought when establishing a solid wellness routine, but it is essential for holistic health. At Samsung, we’re serious about helping our community get better sleep. We’ve introduced various sleep quality tracking tools and launched a tailored sleep coaching programme, all aimed to help users get a more restful night’s sleep.

When it comes to fitness, in particular, everyone’s goals are different. That’s why BioActive Sensor also measures body composition, which deepens users’ knowledge of their physical health, far beyond merely losing weight. The sensor sends microcurrents to measure weight maintained, skeletal muscle gained, body fat lost and body water levels, relative to goals set, helping users hit targets and keep track of what matters to them.

Across these advancements, we remain intensely committed to the secure and private collection of data to give our users peace of mind during their wellness journeys. All health data is encrypted and secured on the device itself and guarded by Knox, ensuring users’ information remains isolated from unauthorised sources.

Wellness That Spans All Devices

We are also providing tools that allow consumers to track overall health and wellness — whether they’re at home, in the gym, or on the road. The Samsung Health app, with more than 200 million active global users, is at the centre of Samsung’s health experience across an extensive range of devices, from smartwatches to smartphones, tablets and even TVs. The app — a holistic health hub that consolidates fitness, wellness, and health monitoring capabilities — records and compiles all kinds of health data and activity information, presents them intuitively, and gives guidance on how to leverage that data to maximise results. The collected information is comprehensive, easy-to-understand, and encourages positive action.

 More connected devices means a more seamless and enhanced user experience. While following guided workout or meditation programmes on Samsung Smart TVs or Galaxy Tabs at home, for example, your calorie count and heart rate are tracked on your Galaxy Watch but viewed on the larger screen for easier access. Your Galaxy Watch also recognises when you fall asleep and automatically dims lights and turns off air conditioners in response.

Open Collaboration Means Better Health Experiences

To give our users the best experience possible, we partner with other leaders in technology and wellness. We have built a strong foundation with our technology, and we welcome collaboration on our open ecosystem — one that often serves as an incubator for exciting new applications, services and features. In collaboration with Google, we co-developed Wear OS and Health Connect so that more users can join the unified platform and take advantage of new services and solutions to meet everyone’s needs.  

Samsung works extensively with third-party experts, research centres, and universities to further advance wearable tracking and insight capabilities, including the National Sleep Foundation for sleep, the University of California San Diego Sleep Laboratory and the University of California, San Francisco Hypoxia Research Laboratory for sleep and blood oxygen research, and Louisiana State University, Pennington Biomedical Research Center and the University of Hawaii Cancer Center for BIA research, to name a few. We’re also committed to researching new ways our health solutions can be used in the medical field. In the coming months, we’re focused on developing more tools and resources that will support the medical community and give our users a more holistic view of their health records.

Users can expect new health and fitness feature improvements, like advanced interval training designed for any cyclist or runner, a new sleep coaching programme, and new body composition insights. Whether you’re just looking to get active or training for an upcoming race, Samsung’s new interval target feature for runners and cyclists lets them pre-set the duration, distance, and number of sets for their workout. From there, Galaxy Watch4 guides them through a custom intensity training session with a series of high-intensity workouts interspersed with low-intensity workouts, making for an impactful and targeted workout every time.

Track Your Sleep

Building on Galaxy Watch4’s robust sleep tracking capabilities, the new Sleep Coaching^[4] programme helps users develop better sleep habits. By tracking sleep patterns over seven days^[5] and completing two related sleep surveys, the programme assigns one of eight Sleep Symbol animals representing the user’s sleep type. Then, the programme will guide users through a four to five week coaching programme that includes missions, checklists, sleep-related articles, meditation guidance, and regular reports to support users as they work towards improving their sleep quality.

Combined with the advanced BioActive Sensor technology and Samsung Health Monitor app^[7], Galaxy Watch4 measures both blood pressure (BP) and electrocardiogram^[8] (ECG), allowing users to monitor their heart health anytime and from anywhere.

Greater Selection of Matching Straps and Watch Faces

The new Galaxy Watch4 update makes the wearable experience even better, from the inside out. Users can further customise their watch face with additional colours and digital clock fonts that make the watch truly their own. Also, new strap colours such as burgundy and cream, and the new fabric band and link bracelet will be available for a more personalised look.

Committed to Expanding Compatibility within the Android Ecosystem

In 2021, Samsung and Google introduced co-developed Wear OS Powered by Samsung, bringing smoother connections across Android devices and seamless access to more apps via Google Play^[9] including Google Maps, Google Pay, and YouTube Music. Coming soon through an additional update, users will be able to stream music over Wi-Fi or LTE from the YouTube Music app on their Galaxy Watch4^[10]. More Convenience with Added Gesture Control

Gesture controls enable you to do more using simple hand movements. In addition to moving your forearm up and down twice to receive calls and rotating your wrist twice to reject calls or dismiss alarms, the update includes a new hand motion that can act as a helpful shortcut to activate a chosen app or feature. By doing a simple ‘knock, knock’ motion with your wrist, you can open a pre-selected app, open the list of workouts, turn on a light or even create a new reminder. You can access an app or feature – your favourite or most frequently used – all without lifting a finger or pressing a button.

Keep Yourself or Loved Ones Safe with Improved Fall Detection

First introduced to the Galaxy smartwatch line in 2020, Fall Detection was capable of recognising if the wearer had fallen down during exercise. LONDON, UK – 25^th October 2021 – The past year has seen a complete overhaul in the way the UK views its health, as Brits swap traditional workouts in favour of activities that promote all-round wellbeing. Research commissioned by Samsung found a staggering 83% of people agree that the gym can be an intimidating experience, with half of the nation (50%) worried others will judge them and others citing reasons including not feeling fit enough (35%) and looking weaker than others (33%). In fact, almost a third of Brits (30%) have found the traditional gym set up so intimidating, they have cancelled their membership altogether.

To help counter the emerging trend of ’gym-timidation’, Samsung UK has teamed up with author, broadcaster and mental health advocate, Katie Piper, who champions inclusivity, to open the doors to its Galaxy Life Gym – a gym for your life, not just your workout. The pop-up gym experience is powered by the Samsung Galaxy Watch4, Samsung’s latest smartwatch that champions a holistic approach to health tracking with features including Stress Score, body composition monitoring, Group Challenge and Daily Activity goals.

The top five causes of ‘gym-timidation’ are:

1. Understanding how to use all the equipment (56% of brits)
2. Other more experienced gym-goers (52% of brits)
3. Fellow gym-goers waiting to use the machine/equipment you were using (50% of brits)
4. The weights Area (47% of brits)
5. Complex machines (33% of brits)

The study revealed the lifting of lockdown has led to a trend for more flexible fitness, as 39% of Brits with gym memberships have chosen to exit their contracts over the past two years, favouring a routine that fits around their new work-life balance. Over a third (37%) of the nation would prefer to wind down with gentle yoga and meditation after a busy day in their home office over traditional forms of exercise, such as HIIT workouts or going for a run.

Confidence is a key cause of ‘gym-timidation’ –  4 in 10 Brits noted body-consciousness as a key reason for avoiding the gym, and 38% surveyed feel more motivated in group classes as opposed to working out solo.

When asked about the future of fitness, respondents said they would like to like to see gyms host classes which focus on having fun whilst burning energy (58%) and offer empowering classes that support mental health and wellbeing (52%), including holistic pursuits of yoga, Pilates and meditation.

In response to these findings, Samsung will be opening the doors of its’ Galaxy Life Gym, a two-day pop-up in the heart of London, taking place on 30^th and 31^st October at 19 Greek Street across run six fabulous sessions from 9am-6pm, and following up with two days in Manchester on Friday 5^th and Saturday 6^th November at Manchester Hall. Katie Piper will be working with Samsung to host a select number of sessions across the London pop-up.
