LONDON, UK. Sept. 5, 2024: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced that it is launching the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo to the UK and European market at IFA 2024 in Berlin. Set to redefine laundry experiences by combining a washer and dryer into a single, space-efficient appliance that completes washing and drying in one device. The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo also leverages AI, heat pump technology and a 7” display to provide a convenient, entertaining laundry experience that also saves energy.

Elevating the Laundry Experience at Home with AI

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is designed to significantly increase laundry capacity without compromising functionality. This all-in-one combo seamlessly integrates a washer and dryer into a single unit, providing a space-saving and efficient laundry solution with broad functionality. It performs as effectively as two separate machines while conserving valuable space, and more importantly eliminates the need to transfer laundry between those machines after the wash cycle finishes. For users, this means they don’t have to keep checking the wash cycle’s progress in the attempt to prevent unpleasant odors, and can use their time more flexibly.

A key feature of the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is the AI Wash & Dry^[1], which sets a new standard for laundry efficiency. This advanced system uses a range of sensors to optimise both washing and drying for each load, freeing users from having to determine the optimal settings for each cycle. Upon sensing the weight of the laundry, it dispenses the right amount of water and detergent. It also detects the fabric and monitors the level of soiling during the cycle, adjusting wash time and detergent use accordingly. After the wash cycle, the technology optimises the drying process based on the weight and fabric,^[2] ensuring excellent cleaning and drying results. With AI Wash & Dry, users benefit from a thorough, more efficient^[3] and personalized laundry experience.

Another benefit the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo brings is its exceptional energy efficiency. The wash cycle is up to 20% more efficient than the A-grade energy efficiency class threshold^[4], and the wash and dry cycle combined also meets the A-grade energy efficiency class rating^[5]. These impressive results are achieved through advanced heat pump drying technology, which dries clothes quickly, gently and efficiently at lower temperatures. In contrast to conventional combination units which use a heater to blow hot air into the drum, Samsung’s heat pump system continuously recycles hot air and optimises heat transfer by reheating and dehumidifying the hot air through the heat exchanger. This results in the reduction of drying time by up to 60%^[6] and an energy consumption cut of up to 75%,^[7] making it an energy efficient and cost-effective choice for laundry needs. The heat pump method also enhances air circulation, preventing fabric shrinkage and reducing damage to clothing. Furthermore, when the AI Energy Mode^[8] is applied through SmartThings, you can reduce energy use by up to 60% on washing, and up to 30% on drying^[9]. This is made feasible through reducing heater use, one of the most energy consuming parts of the washing machine, and consequently increasing cycle time.

Seamless, Efficient User Experiences

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo offers an enhanced user experience with the AI Home^[10], an intuitive 7” wide LCD display that serves as a central control hub for laundry, and moreover the entire home. The wide display delivers substantial information about the laundry including cycle details, remaining amount of detergent, and energy consumption. When showing cycles, the combo uses machine learning to remember user habits and recommend cycles^[11] based on periodic and seasonal needs.^[12]

When the cycle is finished, it provides an energy and water consumption report that can be viewed on the 7-inch LCD display or the SmartThings App^[13]. Additionally, users have clear view of the 3D Map View, which shows all connected appliances within the home and enables users to seamlessly monitor and control them. Users can check if the oven is on, or get the robot vacuum cleaner to start cleaning, all while they are in the laundry room. The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo was verified to level ‘Diamond’ under UL Solutions’ Marketing Claim Verification IoT Security Rating, proving its competitiveness in security.

Furthermore, users of the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo can now enjoy the updated Bixby^[14] which comes with better understanding capabilities allowing for more responsive interaction than before. Through AI, Bixby can understand complicated and casual conversations, allowing users to give multi-intended, complex commands^[15]. Upon using the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, users can ask “What’s the weather like?”, and then say “Start the wash cycle and lower the living room temperature,” and have their requests finished in one sequence. Bixby provides support for Device Q&A as well, assisting users when they have questions about certain features on their appliances. When an error is displayed on the LCD display, users can ask directly what this means, instead of having to look through the user manual or search on their phones. Lastly, the laundry combo has been updated so that it responds without the “Hi Bixby”, or “Bixby” wake-up phrases. Users can naturally approach the washing machine, and say ‘Open the washing machine door’, and then get a prompt response or see the action carried out.

New Line-up for the UK, includes Largest Ever Washer Dryer with Improved Energy Efficiency and Advanced AI Features

An additional line-up of washer dryers has also launched and now available in the UK, built to take the guesswork out of the perfect wash every time, thanks to latest AI-powered features.

Featuring SpaceMax technology, the new line-up has the largest Samsung washer capacity to date – 11kg for a wash and 6kg for drying. Packed with additional features that help users reduce efforts in treating their laundry, such as AI Wash, delivering a thorough wash with less water and detergent by sensing the weight of the fabric and the level of soiling – saving 15% of detergent in the process^[16] AI Ecobubble^[17]goes one step further by mixing air, water and detergent, to cleverly create bubbles that wash your clothes at cooler temperatures, helping you to bring down your energy bills.

Thanks to these features, the new washer dryer line-up brings significant energy savings to the laundry process, providing 10% greater energy efficiency than any other A-rated models on the market^[18]. Plus with AI Energy Mode, available through the SmartThings app, energy monitoring is extended even further. Users can monitor their daily, weekly and monthly power consumption, with the feature even estimating users’ monthly energy bills, smartly reducing energy consumption by up to 70% – amounting to savings of over £300 – compared to washing in warm water^[19].

London, United Kingdom – Sept. 5, 2024 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced it is showcasing its latest energy-efficient appliance lineup at IFA 2024. The new product range includes a BESPOKE AI Washer with A-55% extra energy efficiency,^[1] a Bespoke AI Laundry Combo that achieves an A rating for the complete cycle,^[2] and an A-10% Bespoke Dishwasher^[3]. Drawing on its longstanding dedication to enhancing energy efficiency, Samsung has improved its core technologies to offer better ways to save energy in everyday life.

A More Efficient Washing Experience

The most notable achievement out of Samsung’s high-energy rating lineup at IFA 2024 is the BESPOKE AI Washer. The model, due to launch next year^[4], consumes up to 55% less energy than the minimum energy efficiency requirements for a Class A rating.^[5] Following the A-40% model that launched in the first half this year, the new product has applied Samsung’s technologies to achieve an additional energy saving.

Samsung applies advanced technologies to achieve up to 55% less energy consumption than the minimum energy efficiency requirements for the Class A rating. The core of these advanced technologies is the Bubble Shot, which pulls soapy water through the circulation pump and sprays it on top of the laundry inside the drum. This makes washing more effective by drenching the laundry more easily and allowing the detergent to penetrate clothing evenly. It combines with Ecobubble and algorithms to enhance extra energy efficiency.

The implementation of AI Home^[6] is an additional noteworthy change. This 7’’ wide LCD touchscreen on the device serves as an intuitive control center for the laundry. Not only can users quickly choose their laundry cycle, they can also receive the personalised washing recommendations that suits their habits and periodic needs.^[7] It allows for effective user control and laundry care.

All-in-one, Energy Efficient Laundry Solution

At IFA, Samsung is also displaying the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, which will soon be available in the European market. The model combines a washer and a dryer in a single machine freeing users from the hassle of transferring the load to the dryer after washing. The combo is distinctive in that there is significant improvement in energy efficiency, achieving an A rating across the entire washing and drying cycle,^[8] with an A-20% for washing^[9]This is the highest level in Samsung’s combo lineup in Europe.

Samsung has worked hard to improve the drying efficiency especially. The Heatpump Drying technology dries clothes quickly, gently and efficiently at low temperatures. Furthermore, a specially designed duct structure improves the efficiency of internal air circulation, allowing for the efficient reuse and transfer of heat energy. Meanwhile, to achieve a high energy rating in the wash only cycle, the Bubble Shot Technology is implemented. It make the laundry drench well by spraying soapy water from the top using the circulation pump. As a result, the combo’s complete wash cycle exceeds the minimum energy efficiency requirements for the Class A threshold by up to 20%, with the wash and dry cycle receiving a well-deserved Class A.

Clean Effectively, Save More Energy 

The Bespoke Dishwasher^[10] with extra energy efficiency will be also displayed at IFA 2024. It not only boasts a stylish look with its Kitchen Fit Sliding Door^[11] design that seamlessly matches kitchen furniture, but also offers effective performance while saving energy by up to 10% than the requirements for an A energy rating.^[12]

A WaterJet Clean and an Active Fan Dry system play an important role in delivering this extra efficiency. First, WaterJet Clean delivers intensive cleaning from every angle with rotating dual wash arms, thanks to the specially designed All-in-one Sump module.^[13] It generates a unique flow path to make the product exceptionally power efficient and uses only 7.9 liters^[14] of water ― which is a significantly low level compared to conventional models^[15] ― without impacting its performance.

The Active Fan Dry system,^[16] on the other hand, enhances internal air circulation, leading to less energy consumption. It blows gentle and moderate wind using two fans on the walls of the tub during drying. Since this wind helps evaporate moisture, less latent heat is required from the rinsing water. Therefore, it reduces the amount of energy used for heating the rinsing water. As a result, users can neatly finish the cycle with enhanced energy efficiency.

Additional Energy Savings Through SmartThings Connectivity

With these advancements in hardware, Samsung’s new energy efficient lineup also support SmartThings AI Energy Mode.^[17] After connecting appliances to SmartThings, users can check daily, weekly and monthly power consumption. And when the estimated monthly electricity bill exceeds the targeted amount, they can activate AI Energy Mode through SmartThings app to proactively save energy. Through using the cycles that work with AI Energy Mode, the BESPOKE AI Washer can reduce energy usage by up to 70%^[18].

Visitors at IFA 2024 ― held in Berlin from September 6 to 10 ― will be able to see Samsung’s new energy efficient appliances at Samsung booth. The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is set to launch in the UK in the fourth quarter this year, with ranging updates on the wider product range to be announced.

New Functionalities Alter Kitchen Experiences

The Smart Forward updates introduce an array of new functionalities designed to enhance the user experience and appliance performance. The Family Hub, a touchscreen panel installed on the 4-Door French Door Refrigerator^[4] for food management, entertainment and communication, will now come with Quick Share, Buds Auto Switch ^[5] and Fridge Call, new features that significantly improve connectivity and usability.^[6]

Quick Share makes sharing memories and recipes while in the kitchen easier than ever by allowing users to quickly send photos to the Family Hub screen directly from their mobile device^[7] with just a few clicks. When users have their Galaxy Buds connected to the Family Hub to listen to music or watch cooking tutorial videos, the Buds Auto Switch feature allows users to seamlessly switch to their mobile device to answer incoming calls and back when the call is finished, enabling a cooking experience free from interruptions.

Finally, users can receive phone calls with Fridge Call directly on the Family Hub using its microphone and speaker, eliminating the need to move to a different room to find their phone. This is especially convenient when users’ hands are occupied to cooking, cleaning and dishwashing, making it much easier to multitask while remaining connected. Perhaps best of all, these new features will be available on refrigerator models with Family Hub produced from 2017 onward rather than new models only.

Quick Remote,^[8] an additional feature in which a user’s mobile phone becomes a remote control for connected Samsung appliances, is being expanded across refrigerators produced since 2023, regardless of whether they include a Family Hub screen or not.^[9] Other connected appliances include washing machines and air conditioners also produced since 2023.^[10] All users need to do is simply move close to a SmartThings-connected appliance,^[11] and a remote control menu for the appliance will appear on the quick panel of the Galaxy phone screen being used. This seamless integration ensures that users can control their home environment with ease.

Future-proofing Home Appliances to the Next Level

Apart from making the user experience more seamless, Samsung is also focused on future-proofing existing appliances. The upgraded Bixby^[12] will understand commands with multiple intentions and remember the most recent conversation.^[13] This advanced functionality transforms the way users interact with their appliances, making voice commands more intuitive and responsive.^[14] Samsung UK is providing the update to three products launched in 2024 first: the Bespoke 4-Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub; Bespoke AI Laundry Combo; and Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI.

Safer Use and Lower Energy Consumption

In terms of safety and energy-savings, Samsung is rolling out updates to older models — including refrigerators made as far back as 2021 — because the importance of safety does not diminish with time.^[15]  After an event of a power outage and once resumed with power, refrigerators will detect and notify users via the SmartThings app when internal temperature is high, providing an extra layer of food safety by making users aware of potential issues that could affect the freshness of their stored food.

Additionally, users can now choose different chimes for open door notifications, giving them greater control over their appliance settings. Furthermore, users can maintain a peaceful home environment by putting ice makers in sleep mode, preventing them from working during the night and creating the disruptive sound of ice falling into the tray while users sleep.

Optimal Scheduling, which delays the start of appliances to not have them run during peak energy usage hours or periods of high carbon intensity, will also be added to the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo^[16] and Samsung Dishwashers.^[17] This feature can help users cut down on energy cost. Additionally, the 7-inch AI Home on the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo now automatically switches to power-save mode during wash cycles, further contributing to smart energy savings.^[18]

These updates reflect Samsung’s broader strategy of providing value to customers by enhancing the products they already own. By continuously improving the functionality and performance of its appliances, Samsung ensures that users do not have to worry about their devices becoming obsolete. This approach not only safeguards customers’ investments but also aligns with the company’s efforts to reduce the need for frequent replacements.

Samsung Food is a holistic food platform available on various Samsung devices, including and beyond home appliances. Samsung Food+, the premium subscription service^[3] of Samsung Food, elevates the experience by integrating a health profile and goals, providing personalised meal plans with recipe recommendations. And now, AI is being added to bring differentiated functionality to users around the globe.

Samsung is making food preparation more convenient by rolling out the Vision AI technology for Samsung Food+, which allows users to add items to their Food List by simply snapping a photo of their food items with a smartphone. This functionality means that users owning Bespoke refrigerators with a Family Hub screen^[4] without AI Vision Inside — the internal camera that recognises food items that goes in and out of the fridge — can now also easily add items with photos to their Food List.

Other benefits of the Samsung Food+ subscription service include automatically adding purchased ingredients to the Food List when users check out at the store or online, and searching for recipes based on the contents of the Food List. Users can also get alerts to help them use the items before the manually set use-by-date, helping reduce food waste.

Samsung Food+ further provides the meal plans based on users’ Food List to support sustainable food practice goals by personalising each plan based on the ingredients in users’ Food Lists, prioritising those nearing use-by-date. And with the new “Search with Your Food List” feature, recipes using the ingredients listed in their Food Lists will show on top of the search results to help users with ideas on what can be made with what they have. Recipe recommendations are also provided based on the Food List, and whatever has been used from the Food List is recommended to be added to the Shopping List. This intelligent approach helps inventory maintenance and to reduce food waste while ensuring fresh, tasty meals.

Reach Health Goals With Personalised Meal Plans

Samsung Food now features enhanced tools designed to support users to better maintain their health and to reach wellness goals. The platform provides nutrition-focused meal plans that track and monitor caloric intake within daily meal schedules, whether for recipes or individual food items. It offers “Tailored for You” plans^[5], delivering weekly recipe and snack recommendations based on users’ nutritional needs^[6], chosen diets and previous recipe preferences. The system tracks macronutrient intake within daily meal plans and allows customisable calorie and macronutrient targets for individual health objectives. While Samsung Food users receive three days of recommendations per week, paid and subscribed Samsung Food+ users benefit from a full week of recommendations, with the intelligent platform also factoring in the manually set use-by-dates of ingredients.

Now available in eight languages across 104 countries,^[7] Samsung Food will ensure that all updates are accessible in each of the eight languages and region of availability.

Samsung launched multiple home appliances with AI features earlier this year, such as the Bespoke 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub^[3] featuring AI Vision Inside,^[4] Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI with upgraded AI Object Recognition,^[5] and Bespoke AI Laundry Combo with AI Home.^[6] Taking another step forward, Samsung aims to create an even richer consumer experience by introducing new features. 

Bixby: Better Voice Control for Appliances

The upgraded Bixby enables better voice control through three main capabilities^[7]— understanding complex commands (Multi-Intent), recalling previous conversations (Multi-Turn) and responding to product-related questions (Device Q&A).^[8] Samsung is providing the update to five products launched in 2024 first: the Bespoke 4-Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub; Bespoke AI Laundry Combo; and Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI.^[9]  

First, the upgraded Bixby can understand commands that consist of multiple or unrelated requests in one sentence. Users can control other devices connected by SmartThings^[10] with the upgraded Bixby as well, so they can express their needs more naturally than before. For example, users can ask the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, “Hi Bixby, what’s the weather like? Start washing and clean the living room” and Bixby will process the command sequentially.^[11]  

Second, Bixby is capable of remembering contexts of past conversations,^[12] allowing users to engage in ongoing dialogues with devices rather than issuing isolated commands. If users say to the Bespoke 4-Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub, “Hi Bixby, tell me what time the family dinner is today” and Bixby responds to it, users can follow up and say, “Then set the washing machine to finish one hour before that.”^[13]  

Last but not least, it provides assistance to users when they encounter problems while using appliances or become curious about certain cycles or features. When the screen on the appliance shows an error code, users can turn to Bixby to ask what it means instead of searching through the user manual or contacting the call centre. They can ask questions like, “Hi Bixby, I can hear clicking noises in the fridge, why is that?”, and Bixby will provide several answers. Appliances with screens, such as refrigerators with AI Family Hub or the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, will display the response on the screen, while appliances without screens will provide audio responses. 

Samsung plans to exhibit the Bespoke AI appliances featuring the upgraded Bixby, allowing more people to experience and understand how it will enhance the user experience.

Further expanding the AI for All vision, the conference included chapters “AI Meets the World” and “AI Meets You” where speakers from across the company and its partners demonstrated the critical role AI plays in improving users’ quality of life, equipping them with tools they can use to enrich their lives.

AI For All

Samsung’s AI for All spans a wide range of its AI enabled products, from mobile devices, home appliances and home entertainment systems. By the end of 2024, Samsung expects there will be 200 million Galaxy AI-enabled devices in users’ hands. Samsung understands its AI features need to adapt to how consumers want to live – as well as supporting the needs of the earth.

Central to this is the expanding SmartThings ecosystem, which connects over 500 million devices, offering seamless remote control of all Samsung AI-enabled products, from turning the heating on or off, managing all appliances when home or away and navigating Samsung TVs.

Never before has it been so easy for people across the world to use of the power of AI to take control of the world around them. Samsung AI enable products give this power to its users, allowing them to curate their everyday experiences. Whether striving for more sustainable living, expanding creativity or connecting with their loved ones.

However, only 15% of people said they have a full understanding of how AI can be used in their daily lives and yet 66% of us are looking for ways to create more time. This shows a clear opportunity for Samsung AI to give back to people, and why AI is for All. ^[1]

Launching following IFA, the latest operating system upgrade, One UI 6.1.1, will make AI features from the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6, available on the Galaxy S24, Z Fold5 and Flip5.

This rollout of One UI 6.1.1 will also include brand new apps which bring more opportunity for creativity and connection. Including, Sketch to Image, which allows users to visualise their ideas through image options generated from a simple drawing and Portrait Studio which propels creativity by helping users create a more personalised avatar to use online.

AI Meets You

Samsung believes that its AI should enhance daily life by allowing users to personalise entertainment experiences. At IFA 2024, Samsung launched the Premiere 7 and 9 Projectors, Galaxy Book5 Pro 360, and Galaxy Book4 Edge 15-inch, all designed to help users focus on what they care about and who they share it with.

The Premiere 9 and The Premiere 7 projectors, bring advanced laser technology to home entertainment, delivering exceptional 4K resolution and immersive audio on screens up to 130 inches. They include AI-powered technology, including Upscaling, which enhances content to 4K quality, and Vision Booster, which adjusts brightness and contrast for optimal viewing in various lighting conditions. Designed to transform living spaces into premium home cinemas, these projectors offer a superior viewing experience with cutting-edge technology.

This portable device enhances creativity and connectivity on a vibrant 15-inch display.

Also showcased on stage at IFA were the latest innovations in Samsung TVs. Since 2015, Tizen OS has powered hundreds of millions of smart TVs, leading the evolution of television viewing. 2024 Samsung AI TVs will receive Tizen OS upgrades for seven years considering hardware specification^[2]. This ensures that consumers can continue to enjoy the latest innovations and enhanced connectivity across all their Samsung devices.

Samsung’s Neo QLED 8K AI screens provide an enhanced viewing experience with built-in NQ 8 AI Gen 3 processors. These processors feature 512 neural networks—eight times more than before—and, when combined with the power of AI, deliver a customised, high-quality sound and picture experience. This technology upscales on-screen content to deliver the sharpest and smoothest picture yet.

The latest developments in The Frame and Art Store were also celebrated at IFA with the announcement of several new partnerships. Along with collaborations with Finnish design house Marimekko and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Samsung introduced an exclusive collection of 12 masterpieces by Belgian surrealist René Magritte. These partnerships enable users to bring extraordinary art into their homes, adding a touch of magic to their everyday surroundings.

Samsung also announced the exciting launch of the new Samsung Music Frame in partnership with Universal Picture’s Wicked. The Music Frame wireless speaker was launched earlier this year, delivering superior sound quality that fills any space with rich, clear audio. With built-in woofers and intelligent Dolby Atmos technology inside, the Music Frame intelligently adapts to your home acoustics and brings every sound and note to life. The limited-edition Wicked Music Frame comes with two movie art images and one wonderful exclusive image (only available as part of the limited-edition Music Frame) of the beloved Glinda and Elphaba, along with character autographs and an authenticity certificate.

Samsung is creating simple user experiences through its Bespoke AI appliances^[3], which now offer enhanced voice control through Bixby upgrades. The upgraded Bixby can understand multiple commands in one sentence, recall previous context^[4] to carry out continuous commands for personalised responses and provide answers to product related questions^[5]. It allows users to express their needs more naturally and easily than before.

Samsung also opens up greater control and accessibility benefits for users. For example, Samsung developed and applied an Auto Open Door feature on some appliance models so users can open doors with a light touch. A recent update allows people to open the door by simply saying, “Open the refrigerator door”, even without wake-up commands like “Hi Bixby”.

AI Meets the World

Samsung believes that AI is a force for good and one which has a critical role to play in allowing us all to take better care of the planet and each other.

Samsung has continued its mission to become Net Zero by 2050, with 93% of its DX Division operations running on to Renewable Energy sources^[6].

Within its products, Samsung continues to prioritise energy efficiency and is passionate about using AI to make this possible. Whether that’s AI inside appliances such as its refrigerators and washing machines or using AI to unlock the potential of its SmartThings Eco System to save more energy.

Samsung’s AI Hybrid refrigerators have been built with energy saving front of mind. By combining two power sources, a compressor and Peltier cooling technology, the fridge intelligently responds when more energy than usual is being used. For example, if the fridge door is left open for longer, the Peltier technology works as an extra cooling source to improve overall energy efficiency.

On stage at IFA Samsung revealed that the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is now rolling out across Europe. The All-in-One washer and dryer combo is a single space efficient appliance that finishes the wash and dry cycle in one queue. The wash cycle not only meets but surpasses the minimum energy efficiency requirements for the A-grade rating by up to 20%^[7], and the wash and dry cycle combined also meets the A-grade rating.^[8] This impressive performance is achieved through advanced heat pump drying technology, which dries clothes quickly, gently and efficiently at lower temperatures

The SmartThings Ecosystem remains at the core of Samsung’s ability to pioneer energy efficiency, as it can make lots of small changes to make a big difference. The AI Energy Mode in SmartThings Energy^[9] can save up to 70% of energy consumption for washing machines^[10][11]. Also with SmartThings Away Mode users never have to worry about forgetting to turn off a light or the TV when they go out. Sensors in various appliances sense when there is no-one in the room and then shut down systems to save energy.

Bespoke AI appliances can also save energy costs through Optimal Scheduling and Optimal Charging. These features delay the start of a wash cycle and charging to avoid peak hours in order to reduce energy costs when combined with smart tariffs.
