New research finds firefighters have UK’s toughest job, with paramedics, farmers and builders also included among most gruelling roles in the country

90% of Brits say tech that can withstand tough jobs is vital in demanding roles, with extreme environments (63%) and hazardous conditions (64%) cited as key challenges

Our Yorkshire Farm Shepherdess, Amanda Owen partners with Samsung to demonstrate real-world resilience testing of the new Rugged device range, from mucking out to herding sheep

The new Samsung XCover7 Pro and Tab Active5 Pro Enterprise Edition deliver military-grade durability[1], water-resistance[2], long battery life[3], and push-to-talk functionality[4] – purpose built for frontline and field-based professionals

New research has revealed the UK’s toughest jobs – with firefighters topping the list.

The poll of 2,000 Brits found paramedics, farmers and armed forces personnel were also cited as those who deserve recognition for doing of the most physically and mentally draining work.

The study was commissioned by Samsung to launch their latest Rugged device range which is designed to thrive in harsh work environments and was judged according to criteria including physical demands, danger and risk, and work environment.

The findings, which also identified police officers (34%), fishermen (16%) and construction workers (15%) among the UK’s toughest workers, underscored a growing demand among workers and employers for tech that can withstand harsh, high-risk environments.

TOP 20 TOUGHEST JOBS

Firefighter (45%)

Paramedic (44%)

Surgeon (44%)

Nurse (37%)

Police Officer (34%)

Armed Forces Personnel (28%)

Care Worker (22%)

Farmer (20%)

Teacher (20%)

Social Worker (18%)

Fisherman (16%)

Construction Worker (15%)

Agricultural Labourer (11%)

Builder / Bricklayer (9%)

Underground Utility Worker (9%)

Scaffolder (6%)

Mechanic (6%)

Roofer (6%)

Refuse Collector (Bin Worker) (5%)

Train driver (5%)

The research also revealed that nine in 10 Brits value devices capable of withstanding harsh conditions, citing reducing physical strain through equipment (54%), alerting workers to risks more quickly (53%) and automating repetitive tasks (45%) as ways to ease pressure.

To emphasise the importance of durable technology in tough jobs, Samsung enlisted farmer and shepherdess Amanda Owen to give an insight into the realities of working life on a farm.

From mucking out and herding animals, to operating machinery and navigating unpredictable weather, Amanda showcases how physically demanding farm life can be, highlighting the need for technology that can keep up with resilient workers themselves.

Amanda Owen says: “Farming isn’t for the faint hearted – we’re up before dawn, battling the elements, and it takes real resilience out here. In this environment, our tech needs to be just as tough—anything that can’t handle water or a drop is a liability. We need something rugged on the outside and smart on the inside, that can keep up with the job.”

According to respondents, 63% of people believe for a job to be ‘tough’ it must take place in an extreme environment. 58% of jobs which can be considered challenging also involve working with dangerous equipment, with a further 55% fearing dangerous people.

Two thirds (62%) of Brits agree that tough jobs need more recognition in the UK saying that they play a vital role in keeping the country running (64%), often work long hours with little rest (46%) and face hazardous conditions daily (62%) as to why they deserve more recognition.

The Samsung Rugged range, which includes the Galaxy XCover7 Pro and Tab Active5 Pro, is designed to take on tough, rugged environments, offering water and dust resistance[5], drop protection[6], long battery life as well as replaceable batteries, and enhanced touch sensitivity for use in the rain[7] or with gloves[8]

Annika Bizon, Mobile Experience VP of Product & Marketing, Samsung UK&I says:“Tough roles demand robust support. Whether it’s maintaining connectivity in the field or ensuring mission-critical tasks aren’t interrupted, having the right tech in place is essential. The Rugged range has been engineered specifically for these environments — combining military-grade durability with the business tools workforces require.”

Almost half (46%) of Brits admitted they don’t feel like they have the resilience to take on a physically demanding role, a figure that dropped to 40% among men.

In contrast, 52% of women believe they have what it takes to handle roles that might require higher levels of emotional and mental capacity.

When it comes to younger generations, 61% of those aged 18–24 have considered taking up physically tough roles when exploring career options. This compares with just 11% of Boomers, who prefer to steer clear of jobs they’d deem tough.

Two in five (38%) agree there’s a misconception that physically demanding jobs don’t require robust technology.

From construction sites and emergency callouts to remote locations and extreme weather – where phone failure simply isn’t an option – Samsung’s Rugged range is built to go the distance with those who keep the country running.

Engineered for endurance, the devices offer military-grade protection, taking up to a 1.8 metre drop with the cover on[9], ready for whatever the job throws at them.

The programmable hot key allows you to set up shortcuts for frequently used apps, you can transform your device into a walkie-talkie, torch, scanner, payment terminal or whatever you need it to be.

But it’s not just the hardware that’s built for resilience. With the ability to set up Knox Suite[10] swiftly with QuickStart Go, teams can be up and running with business-ready devices in no time, while Samsung Knox security keeps data protected against malware or threats.

And with 3-year warranty, up to 8- years of security maintenance releases and eight generations of operating system updates[11], plus next-business-day doorstep exchange[12], Rugged users get the reassurance and support they need, long after deployment.

LONDON, UK 4th March 2021 – Samsung has today announced the new Galaxy XCover 5, a rugged and sophisticated device equipped to handle demanding jobs, whilst meeting the needs of an increasingly mobile workforce. Engineered for the field and factory, the Samsung Galaxy XCover 5 combines durability with comfort for a product that is sleek and easy-to-hold, yet rugged enough to withstand the toughest of working environments. It’s built to power today’s mobile business with improved touch sensitivity for use with gloves, and comes with an easy-to-charge, replaceable battery for all day productivity.

Joe Walsh, Director of B2B, Samsung UK & Ireland says: “In a digital world, the role of the frontline worker is consistently becoming more challenging. They are expected to be more productive in the most extreme work environments. At Samsung, we always listen to our customers and use our expertise to develop reliable rugged devices that answer their key challenges by being easy to use and hard to break. The Galaxy XCover 5 is our most compact rugged device yet, built to increase day-to-day productivity and collaboration for field workers in all conditions – from extreme heat to the pouring rain – and enable them to get the job done.”

Built for Tough Environments

The Galaxy XCover 5 is equipped with various features to handle demanding jobs and activities. With military standard certification (MIL-STD 810H), enhanced shock absorption enables the Galaxy XCover 5 to withstand drops of up to 1.5 meters[1] and IP68-rated dust and water resistance means it can be submerged in over a metre of water for 30 minutes,[2] with complete protection against dust. And, as professionals in the field are required to wear gloves due to the demands of the job, or for health and safety precautions, the Glove Touch feature increases touch sensitivity allowing users to operate the device while wearing gloves for quick and convenient use.

Secured by Knox

In addition to being physically built to last, Samsung’s Rugged devices are protected by Samsung Knox, Samsung’s defence-grade security platform. Offering true end-to-end protection, the Samsung Galaxy XCover 5 comes with security embedded across every single layer of the device, from the chip all the way up to the apps. Samsung Knox protects confidential business information in real-time and pre-emptively responds to increasingly advanced malware and malicious threats.

As part of Samsung’s Enterprise Edition portfolio, the Galaxy XCover 5 also benefits from 5 years’ worth of security updates, giving users peace of mind knowing their data is protected for as long as they use their Galaxy device.

Integration with the Samsung Partner Ecosystem

The Galaxy XCover 5 is also enhanced with unique partner-enabled mobility solutions for use in a wide range of business scenarios, including the ability to integrate the walkie talkie capability in Microsoft Teams[3] and transform the device into a barcode scanner.

Combined with the new Samsung Knox Capture[4], the Galaxy XCover 5 can produce enterprise-grade scanning directly from the device’s camera at a competitive value, without compromising device performance. All scanned data is then directly transferred to business applications, saving time, and improving accuracy.

Both barcode scanning and push-to-talk can be easily accessed by creating a shortcut button using the programmable XCover Key – a customised feature that offers single-touch access to the most frequently used apps, such as LED flashlight, emergency calls or maps.

Greater Performance

Equipped with the powerful Exynos850 processor, 4GB RAM and up to 64GB internal storage, the Galaxy XCover 5 has the power to keep up with the demands of all businesses. The long-lasting, replaceable 3,000mAh battery also supports fast charging through USB and POGO pins, which enables customers to conveniently recharge using a wireless dock,[5] resulting in less time spent plugged in and more time on the task at hand.

Professional Grade Camera

The Galaxy XCover 5 comes equipped with a single 16MP (F1.8) rear camera that provides impeccable sharpness making it effortless to capture professional-grade images and videos. The Live Focus feature allows the subject in shot to stand out and the 5MP (F2.2) front camera is ideal for video conferencing.

Availability

The new Samsung Galaxy XCover 5 will go on sale in the UK from 12th March, available online from the Samsung Business Shop, at an RRP of £329. Samsung’s Rugged devices will also be available to purchase from Samsung Experience Stores once they re-open in line with government guidance.

London, UK, 29th July 2020 – Samsung Electronics UK Ltd. has today revealed the results of a multi-industry research study into the use of rugged technology, looking at key benefits such as productivity and cost saving, resulting in nine out of ten who have experienced these first-hand, keen to invest in more.

The results showcased that rugged tech will form a pivotal role in the future of business, with 81% of users believing that tougher devices will be essential in their workplace over the next two years. Feedback from those currently using rugged tech was resoundingly positive, with over four in five (86%) claiming that the devices are beneficial to their job.

The research[1] looked at employees and decision-makers across Construction, Manufacturing, Transport & Logistics, Health, Retail, Emergency Services, Utilities, and Automotive sectors to reveal current attitudes towards rugged technology. Rugged refers to hardware – including smartphones, tablets, laptops and wearables – designed to operate in extremely harsh environments and conditions, such as the award-winning Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro and the Galaxy Tab Active Pro.

Within the industries highlighted, Samsung uncovered an array of key insights into the benefits and attitudes towards the wider adoption of rugged tech, with those already using or deploying it in their workplace saying the following:

Financial efficiency: More than nine out of ten (91%) have said investing in rugged tech has reduced their long-term company costs, with half claiming the reduced need for repairs and replacements is the major economic benefit.

Lower the risk: Over 40% workers currently use their personal device for work, raising serious concerns around data security and associated business risks. By equipping employees with rugged devices, a third of users claimed that the standard of security improved.

Productivity boost: Nearly half (45%) said that the improved level of productivity experienced when using the devices was a key benefit. With UK productivity currently 30% lower than the US, according to PwC, results suggest rugged tech could be a valuable tool to give businesses a boost.

Tough tech: Over half (58%) said that its durability was the primary benefit, with 84% stating that their performance improved when not having to worry about the device breaking.

“At Samsung, we are committed to listening to the opinions and challenges faced by our customers and it is excellent to see that rugged tech is making a difference for its users and their businesses,” says Joe Walsh, Director of B2B at Samsung UK & Ireland.

“These results highlight a clear enthusiasm and demands for the growth of the rugged tech market, and it is encouraging to see how many users want to continue to invest in the future. As more businesses adopt this technology, we only anticipate the appreciation for its financial and performance-based benefits to rise. At Samsung, our unyielding passion for excellence ensures we always enable our customers to thrive with innovative devices that balance their needs by being easy to use and hard to break.”

While over two-thirds (68%) of rugged users claim that they cannot imagine work life without rugged technology, the survey also revealed a strong will from non-users to deploy it in the future.

Over two-thirds (67%) of those that don’t currently deploy rugged tech would like to incorporate it into their workplace in the future.

Over half (52%) non-users believe their company would perform better with rugged tech, supported by 81% of current users who say they have already seen an improvement.

Nearly three-quarters (73%) of businesses not using rugged tech have never considered the financial benefits, but more than nine out of ten current users say that it has already reduced their costs.

Looking forward, the results suggest that rugged tech will form a pivotal part of digital transformation projects across many industries. Almost two-thirds (60%) of respondents believe that rugged tech will become imperative for their industry in the next two years, with 61% users stating that tougher devices will form a vital part of the 5G revolution.

LONDON, England – 03 December 2019 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today introduces the Galaxy Tab Active Pro Enterprise Edition; the business-optimised rugged tablet enabling industrial professionals to achieve the best possible work performance.

An evolution of the Galaxy Tab Active2, the Galaxy Tab Active Pro has been designed to give users more choice, control and protection. With many businesses managing large, disparate teams in the field, the new Galaxy Tab Active Pro helps workforces stay productive wherever work takes them.

Designed to meet a balance of consumer design and traditional rugged features like IP68[1] and MIL-STD-810G[2] certification, the Galaxy Tab Active Pro is the most rugged and high performing device Samsung has ever made. It combines the utility and security of a PC with the versatility and portability of a tablet, and its rugged features make it suitable for hostile working environments.

The 10.1” WUXGA display makes large format, high-resolution content more accessible than ever before, and the highly responsive inbox S Pen also enables precision input required for capturing data on-the-go. What’s more, the Tab Active Pro is exclusively available with Galaxy Enterprise Edition, Samsung’s first all-in-one mobility solution. Businesses can now easily configure, update, deploy and run a mobile ecosystem at scale, all backed up by Samsung Knox defence-grade security.

With extended product lifecycle[3], 4-years security and maintenance patches[4] plus, 3-year enhanced service support5 —users can request a specialist mobile engineer to assist on the set-up of Knox, the OS and support on any MDM interoperability problems. In addition to that, Samsung offers users a choice of multiple repair options including Doorstep exchange and on-site repair, ensuring their mobile technology continues to perform and providing businesses with complete peace of mind.

Key features of the Tab Active Pro include:

1″ WUXGA Display:The 10.1” WUXGA display on the Galaxy Tab Active Pro is perfect for when users need clarity while working in most elements and demanding conditions. With a larger display compared to the Tab Active 2, users can easily share and transfer information on the move or view large-format content when mounted in vehicles

Samsung DeX: Featured for the first time in a rugged tablet, Samsung DeX connects the Galaxy Tab Active Pro to a monitor with a single cable6 for a PC-like experience. No cable? No problem. Users can switch to DeX mode and use their tablet like a PC, so they can have multiple windows open, quickly draft emails and send status reports back from the field. Then, they can head back in the office move to extensive editing and collaboration on a bigger screen

Samsung Knox:Keep company data safe with the defence-grade security of Knox Platform that protects the Galaxy Tab Active Pro from the chip up. Knox Configure lets users automate configuration and customisation, and Enterprise FOTA makes remote device management and deployment of security patches a snap. It also features biometric security including facial recognition and home button fingerprint scanner, so there’s no password to remember

Joe Walsh, B2B Director for Samsung Electronics UK commented: “We’re delighted to announce the Tab Active Pro, a natural evolution from the Tab Active 2 which builds on the heritage of our Rugged portfolio. Its rugged design and features allow for broader implementation of the transformational digital solutions that were previously out of reach for many companies. With the Tab Active Pro, employees can be more productive in challenging environments and companies can ensure their data stays secure with Samsung Knox. We’re excited to share the benefits of Enterprise Edition too, where businesses will get even more choice, control and protection over how they set up and run their enterprise mobile ecosystem.”
