LONDON, United Kingdom – December 6th 2023 – Samsung Electronics and Mastercard today announced their partnership on a newly launched Mastercard programme: Wallet Express. The service provides banks and card issuers with a swift and cost-effective means of expanding their digital wallet offerings.

By incorporating Wallet Express, issuers can provide their customers with Samsung Wallet. In turn, consumers have a wide range of ways to pay, including with their Galaxy wearable devices. Paying with a Galaxy Watch brings greater speed and convenience to the in-store shopping experience.

Teg Dosanjh, Vice President, Samsung Electronics Europe, commented: “We are excited to be joining Mastercard´s Wallet Express to give consumers more flexibility to make payments almost anywhere they need to. Millions of people already choose Samsung Wallet, and this partnership will give more people the opportunity to use the safe and secure Samsung Pay service on their Galaxy device”.

Valerie Nowak, Executive Vice President, Product & Innovation, Mastercard Europe, commented: “We´re proud that Samsung are joining our Wallet Express programme, which provides consumers with a broad range of choice. It seamlessly integrates Samsung Wallet into their banking experience, allowing flexibility to decide how consumers make payments using their favorite Galaxy mobile and wearable devices”.

Samsung Wallet, which launched last year, brings together the mobile payment experience of Samsung Pay and Samsung Pass into a more comprehensive digital wallet that allows users to organise digital keys, boarding passes, identification cards and more, in one, easy-to-use and secure mobile application.

Consumers across the United Kingdom are increasingly using digital wallets for both in-store and online payments. Building on the success of the launch of Wallet Express, Mastercard is also launching the next two iterations for 2024 of the Wallet Express Issuer Enablement Programme for all issuers in the Europe region.

The programme aims to further simplify the process for issuers in enabling and facilitating Samsung Pay, offering consumers one of the largest digital wallet platforms in Samsung Wallet. By participating in the programme, issuers can enhance their capabilities to support Samsung Wallet, ultimately empowering consumers with full payment options.

Mastercard will enable a participating issuer for eligible Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (MDES) wallets launched in the respective countries without the need to raise wallet onboarding projects for the target wallets.

LONDON, UK – 6 December 2021 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd – A new nationwide study has found that 52[1] percent of Britons claim they very rarely or never

LONDON, UK – 6 December 2021 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd – A new nationwide study has found that 52[1] percent of Britons claim they very rarely or never take cash out with them on routine trips, instead using their card or mobile phone to make payments.

In fact, only 14 percent of the nation always carry cash – and just 8 per cent of 18-to-29-year-olds.

Overall, a staggering 83 percent of Brits are making fewer cash purchases than they were doing so five years ago, while 72 percent believe it’s really only older folk who are using cash routinely these days.

More than a third (36 percent) of the 1500 Brits polled said they only ever use a purse or wallet if travelling further than usual, while a fifth (18 percent) never take one out.

And 16 percent of Brits can’t even remember the last time they brought their wallet or purse out with them.

More than a quarter (26 percent) of us think it’s a big faff having to count out change to pay for things, and an efficient 19 percent say that it simply takes too long.

Less than half, 46 percent, are still using a wallet or purse every time they leave the house.

Meanwhile 14 percent admit it’s been at least six months since they used one.

Little wonder then, perhaps, that almost two thirds of the nation (65 percent) think the days of carrying cash are coming to an end.

The study, by Samsung Pay, found that the main reasons Britons are preferring to pay for products and services using a card or mobile payments on their phone are worries about losing cash while out (24 percent), concerns about how hygienic it is to use cash anymore (23 percent), and feeling vulnerable about getting cash out in public (22 percent).

The study found that 73 percent of restaurant meals are paid for by a cashless transaction, and 64 percent of Brits always pay for a drink in a pub by card or phone.

A further 83 percent will pay for their big food shop by cashless means, 85 percent pay for clothes and shoes by card or phone, and 71 percent do not use cash for their train or bus tickets.

52 percent of haircuts are now paid for without cash, and the same number (52 percent) of car parking fees are now paid for with a cashless transaction.

The research also found that 89 percent of the nation believe there’ll come a point soon when neither cards or cash is used, and people will pay for everything with their mobile phone.

And almost a quarter of Brits (24 percent) believe phone payments are much more secure and feel safer than using a card or cash for transactions.

Teg Dosanjh, Director of Connected Services and Technology, Samsung UK and Ireland, said: “It’s no surprise that we’re seeing so few cash transactions being made by customers now, and when you factor in the number of shops and restaurants that have stopped accepting cash altogether, it’s easy to see why. In addition, we’ve become more tech savvy, with a rise in the number of Brits choosing to use their phones to make contactless payments, with many of us just wanting the flexibility and convenience of being able to pay however, and whenever we choose.”

“Samsung Pay gives customers a safer and more secure way to pay over traditional plastic cards because they offer multiple layers of security and protection built in, so customers can tap and go, knowing their money is protected when out spending. We’re also more conscious of hygiene now, with customers preferring to avoid touching the traditional chip and pin machines and instead using their phone to tap and pay, which has likely added to this shift towards mobile payments.”

Meanwhile almost a quarter of Britons (24 percent) still have a penny jar or piggy bank sitting at home, filled with coins they never use.

And although picking up a penny is said to bring good luck, 39 percent of Brits just wouldn’t bother doing so – with a further 16 percent admitting it would be grotty and unhygienic.

LONDON, UK – 16 November, 2021 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd – With Black Friday and the festive spending season just around the corner, it’s that time of year again where people are starting to think about planning ahead and where to find the best deals. And with lockdown restrictions almost fully lifted, coupled with the bumper retail season and the excitement of the imminent festivities, could trip us up if we aren’t prepared.

The recent increase in the contactless card spending limit to £100 (up from £45) will have many feeling like it couldn’t have come at a better time, assuming the quick tap and go function will allow them to spend their money safely using their traditional plastic card, but perhaps they should exercise caution.

Although the temptation to ‘tap and go’ might be there with contactless cards, research shows that the reality is, two in five[1] people are genuinely concerned about the possibility of card fraud with the increase. And given how easy it now is to make a high value payment with a quick tap onto a card reader, the potential loss is greater with the higher limit, especially if you were to lose your card, it’s easier for the person who found it to make a high value payment on that card with no restrictions.

With Samsung Pay however, not only have users already been able to pay above the £100 contactless limit, you get all the convenience of tap to pay with every transaction, regardless of the amount, and authenticated by the customer in the form of fingerprint or PIN, making it more secure than paying by a traditional bank card.

Yet despite this, it seems the majority of the population is sleepwalking into riskier spending, given 60% of people are still using their traditional bank cards to make contactless payments. What’s even more concerning is that over a third of people weren’t even aware of the spending limit increase in the first place, leaving them potentially exposed to fraudulent activity.

Commenting on the benefits and safety of mobile payments for customers, Teg Dosanjh, Director of Connected Services and Technology, Samsung UK and Ireland, said: “As we start spending again after the extended lockdown we’ve had, there are some great deals to be had, but it’s important not to forget payment safety when we’re out shopping.

Physical plastic cards may seem easy with their tap and go function, but with no authentication to spend £100, they present greater risk. We’re encouraged that three quarters of the UK are now more open and feel more positively towards mobile payment solutions like Samsung Pay, which provide a safer and more secure way to pay. With multiple layers of security and protection built in, including biometric authentication such as fingerprint and PIN, customers can grab a bargain, and tap and go, safe in the knowledge that their hard-earned money is protected.”

But it’s not all bad, people are becoming much savvier when it comes to earning perks, with six in ten people having expressed that cashback incentives would motivate them to use mobile payments more often, and preferring them to other rewards out there. That’s where Samsung Pay+, powered by Curve, comes in – available within Samsung Pay, Pay+ gives customers the opportunity to earn some great rewards from their transactions, tailored to their spending history, and earning them between 1 and 20%[2] cashback on every day spending. This is welcome news given Black Friday and Christmas are only around the corner, giving customers the opportunity to maximise the value from every pound they spend – and that’s why solutions like Samsung Pay and Pay+ make good financial sense.

Furthermore, Samsung Pay+ customers can simplify their spending by rolling all their Mastercard and Visa credit and debit cards into one card on their phone and earn cashback across every card they add, making them all that much more rewarding.

Teg added: “We’re a nation of tech savvy spenders and we want the flexibility of being able to pay however, and whenever we choose. We know this is true as two thirds of people we surveyed said they now prefer using mobile wallets over their traditional plastic card, which is double the number from last year (30%)[3]. And as an extra incentive for customers shopping on Samsung.com, customers are guaranteed 5% cashback[4] – only available with Samsung Pay+”

Samsung Pay and Samsung Pay+ support all UK debit and credit cards[5] so you can relax and enjoy seamless contactless payments virtually anywhere that accepts card payment.

The research was carried out by Ketchum Research and Analytics, on behalf of Samsung. A total of 2,000 people aged 18+ were surveyed in the UK. Fieldwork ran from 12th to 26th August 2021.

LONDON, UK, 14th September 2021 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd today revealed the results of a national survey into the way Brits are choosing to pay as they

LONDON, UK, 14th September 2021 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd today revealed the results of a national survey into the way Brits are choosing to pay as they reacquaint themselves with the new ‘low touch’ world of retail. With 57 days passing since so-called ‘Freedom Day’ in the UK, the findings of this research, commissioned by Samsung Pay, suggests that the nation has potentially reached a ‘tipping point’ in how they choose to pay for their goods when out and about.

Whilst traditionally using cash or plastic cards for payments, the country has embraced more digital forms of payment over the last few years with almost half (46%) of Brits saying they were more willing to pay digitally at the peak of the lockdown in 2020. But as stores reopened in 2021 with more stringent health and safety measures, we’re seeing an even greater shift towards more low contact, mobile forms of payment.

By giving people the ability to turn their smartphone or smartwatch into a digital wallet that houses customers’ credit, debit and loyalty cards for use virtually everywhere contactless is accepted, the research also found that remarkably, two thirds of people (62%) would now prefer to use their payment card through their mobile wallet, which is double the number of people from last year (31%)[i].

With the nation more tech savvy than ever, and with hygiene, convenience and simplicity top of people’s minds when it comes to payments, shoppers are increasingly turning to their devices to pay. 90% of people agreed with the statement that using a smartphone or smartwatch to make contactless payments during the pandemic was more convenient; with 4 in 5 people (80%) saying they enjoy the fact they can switch between their smartphone and smartwatch to make payments.

Whilst mobile payments aren’t new, the nation has been addicted to spending on plastic in recent years; however, the tide is beginning to turn. Nearly half of those polled (42%) agree that carrying multiple physical cards is inconvenient and over half of people (53%) would happily no longer receive plastic payment cards from their bank.

Commenting on this research, Teg Dosanjh, Director of Connected Services and Technology, Samsung UK and Ireland, said: “This shift is indicative of the way customers are migrating towards mobile payments as confidence and convenience grows in more digital forms of transaction.

The reality is retail looks and feels different these days, and customers are savvy about ways to keep themselves safe in store whilst speeding up transactions at the till. Mobile payments are not only more convenient and more hygienic, but they can offer added benefits in terms of cashback and rewards – something we’re proud to offer through our Samsung Pay and Pay+ product.”

Aside from added convenience, one of the concerns driving customers towards mobile forms of payment is hygiene. With the pandemic making people hyper-conscious about germs, it’s unsurprising that despite 58% of Brits saying they still use physical payment cards, a staggering 86% of people agreed that using a smartphone or smartwatch to make a contactless payment during the pandemic made them ‘feel safe’.

Teg added: “Payment doesn’t need to be one dimensional anymore. We’re a nation of tech savvy spenders and want the flexibility of being able to pay however, and whenever we choose. With Samsung Pay, that might be via your smartphone or your smartwatch; the power to pay really is in the customer’s hands now.”

The move to mobile payment is also being compounded by people’s heightened environmental concerns. A fifth of people (20%) feel that using smart devices to pay will be better for the environment and one in four (24%) see it as more convenient than carrying physical cards.

Samsung Pay is a free app that allows people to turn their smartphone or watch into a digital wallet. It lets customers carry their credit, debit and loyalty cards on their device for use virtually everywhere contactless is accepted.

But that’s not all. Stored in the Samsung Pay wallet, Samsung Pay+[ii] (powered by Curve) is a digital card that simplifies spending, allowing customers to use any major UK bank card from their Samsung smartphone or smartwatch. This includes earning up to 20% cashback on a range of major brands[iii] including 5% cashback at Samsung.com.

London, UK – November 2nd , 2020 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd can today reveal the results of a national survey[1] into Brits’ relationships with their finances, and payment solutions. The findings of the research, commissioned by Samsung Pay, suggest that this year’s lockdown has had a transformative impact on the way people want to manage and improve their personal finances.

The UK’s enthusiasm for digital payment methods has soared over the last year, as almost half of (46%) Brits claim they are more willing to pay digitally following the lockdown period. With half of the respondents claiming to feel “anxious”, “overwhelmed” or “scared” when thinking about their finances, the nation is looking for new, simpler ways to manage their money.

The survey suggests that traditional transactions could soon be coming to an end. With more than four in ten (42%) people saying they have too many cards in their wallet – up to 15 in some cases – and many wanting to avoid using physical cash (45%), a growing number of people (31%) are now turning to their phone to make payments.

While this attitude has, inevitably, accelerated due to this year’s pandemic, evidence shows this was a pre-existing trend, with nearly half (48%) respondents claiming they can’t remember the last time they visited a bank in person. The flexibility of checking accounts and moving money around at the tap of a button is a key factor in this shift, as eight in ten state it is a major benefit of going digital.

Surveying 2,000 people across the UK, Samsung’s research also revealed the following insights:

People want more control: More than six in ten (61%) people between 18-64 wish they had more control over their finances, with almost a third (31%) of Gen Z and Millennials admitting to feeling anxious when they think about it.

Too many options: Four in ten consumers feel “overwhelmed” by the sheer number of different banking options currently available to them, suggesting a simple solution is in demand.

Rewards are rare: Over eight in ten (82%) consumers say that they want to get rewarded for using their card, but currently only two in five say they currently feel like they are doing so.

Bringing cards together is the dream: Seven in ten people agree that having all their payment cards in the palm of their hands is an “amazing” prospect.

As consumer attitudes evolve, so must the technology. Launched earlier this year, the Samsung Pay Card, powered by Curve and Mastercard, is a digital solution built for this new era of payment.

This is not another bank card to add to the mix. With the Samsung Pay Card, users can carry their whole wallet digitally via their Samsung smartphone or smartwatch. With a simple set-up in the Samsung Pay app, customers can shop with their existing debit and credit cards, as well as their loyalty and rewards cards, virtually anywhere that contactless is accepted[2].

By opting for the Samsung Pay Card, users can benefit from:

All your cards, in one place: Samsung Pay Card supports all Mastercard and Visa payment cards, allowing people the convenience to pay contactless through one app, all from the palm of their hand.

Leaving the wallet at home: From credit cards and debit cards, to loyalty and membership cards, Samsung Pay Card removes the need to carry a wallet or purse around – with everything in one, simple to use app.

Maximising rewards: Samsung Pay Card is a free-to-use service that makes spending more rewarding. Additionally, users can earn 5% cashback[3] at Samsung.com and earn many more rewards from a wide choice of merchants[4].

Going back in time[5]: With the unique ‘Go Back in Time’ functionality, Samsung Pay Card user can move transactions from one card to another after they’ve been made, giving customers more flexibility and control of their spending.

See the full picture[6]: For a crystal-clear understanding of payments, customers can see transactions across different cards via the Timeline View in the Curve app, or recent transactions in Samsung Pay, with real-time notifications

“These results exhibit a clear shift in consumer attitudes towards the way they make payments following this year’s events,” commented Teg Dosanjh, Director of Connected Services, UK & Ireland at Samsung Electronics.

“Samsung Pay Card provides customers with the option to control all of their finances from the palm of their hand, something that this research shows is more important now, than ever before.

Our customers are at the heart of everything we do, and we strive to create technology that improves their day-to-day lives. The Samsung Pay Card is not a bank card, but a digital wallet that provides our loyal customers with a simple, safe and much more rewarding way to bring their cards together”

Despite the will to go digital with their payments, research results show that security is still a key concern for people looking to make the transition. Over half of respondents (54%) admit to worrying about how secure their details are when using digital payment methods. With vault-like security, built upon Samsung Knox and biometric authentication measures, Samsung Pay Card provides reassurance by ensuring every payment stays private, protected and secure.

Samsung Pay Card is available to all Samsung Pay app users, with a simple in-app set up, customers can use their Samsung Pay Card straight away.

[1] The research was carried out by Ketchum Research and Analytics, on behalf of Samsung. A total of 2,000 people aged 18+ were surveyed in the UK. Fieldwork ran from 1st-5th October 2020 and was conducted by Vitreous World.

[2] Combination of Samsung Pay and the new Samsung Pay Card offers users greater coverage, compatible with nearly all banks and payment solutions available in the UK. Full list of Samsung Pay compatible cards can be found on https://www.samsung.com/uk/samsung-pay/faq/

[4] Choose 1% cashback from 3 merchants selected from a wide range of brands. Introductory offer for 90 days.

[5] Move £1,000 up to 14 days after transaction. Limits may vary depending on individual Curve accounts.
