Samsung Newsroom attended the final Tech Forum session, titled “Understanding Home, Understanding You: Rethinking the Role of the Home in the Era of AI,” to examine the transformative potential of AI in smart home innovation and the need for collaboration to deliver on the promise of Home AI.

Smart UI as the Gateway to Home AI 

User interface (UI) is a critical element in the Home AI experience, serving as the bridge between users and their mobile devices, TVs, home appliances and more.

“UI is a key area in the age of AI,” said Patrick Chomet, Mobile Strategy Advisor at Samsung Electronics. “With the advent of LLM multimodal AI, a big shift has taken place in User Interface (UI), enabling people to get things done in natural and simple ways such as gesture, voice or text interaction. Users no longer need to understand devices, rather the device should understand the user’s intent.”  

He explained how intelligent user interfaces not only enable more intuitive interactions but also procure deeper understandings of user context and intent, which brands can use to optimise in-home solutions.

“We have implemented an intuitive and concise UI for various SmartThings features,” said Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings Team at Samsung Electronics.  

She engaged the audience with examples of the latest SmartThings functions including Quick Remote, a feature that enables users to control their TVs with a connected Galaxy smartphone; 3D Map View, a feature that allows users to manage their entire home and check energy consumption through Galaxy smartphones and tablets; and Home Insight, a feature that provides timely home reports and delivers personalised recommendations to users. 

The Role of Platforms and Standardisation in Shaping Smart Homes 

The panelists then delved into the efforts required to make Home AI a reality. Moderator Carolina Milanesi, CEO and founder of Heart of Tech and President at Creative Strategies, introduced the topics of integrated AI platforms and industry standards to guide the discussion. 

“As we scale our AI platform to reach across applications, services and multiple devices, the experience can be optimised around the user,” said Chomet. “User context and richer insights can be gathered to deliver relevant and truly personalised experiences.”

Tobin Richardson, President and CEO of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), noted the importance of industry standards in building an ecosystem in which devices can be connected simply, securely and seamlessly.  

“Building blocks for AI in the home are grounded in seamless connectivity, with AI relying on device interoperability to thrive. A common language like Matter enables devices to communicate effortlessly, setting the stage for AI innovation,” he said, highlighting that the goal is not just to create a perfect connected experience but to foster a robust and trustworthy industry while making smart homes more accessible and reliable.

A More Personalised, Secure Smart Home 

 Addressing concerns regarding the challenge of providing personalised experiences in homes shared by multiple people, Chomet spoke on how AI technology can understand intent and context to provide an optimised experience for each user. He emphasised that Samsung will innovate for multi-device connectivity, rather than individual products.

Jung also cited practical cases of how Samsung Health and SmartThings are connecting data and devices to provide hyper-personalised health experiences. For example, Samsung Health and SmartThings can optimise sleep environments by automatically adjusting temperature and humidity based on users’ sleep patterns and the environmental conditions they live in. When Galaxy devices recognise that users have been exercising, SmartThings will activate appliances such as air conditioners and washing machines upon their return home.

The discussion then touched on the critical role of security and the protection of personal information in smart homes. 

“Samsung places the highest priority on security in every aspect,” said Jung. She highlighted how Knox Matrix safeguards the smart home ecosystem while Knox Vault protects hardware. “By integrating the expansive SmartThings ecosystem and AI with the robust security of Samsung Knox, users can enjoy personalised smart living experiences safely.” 

“With more than eight out of ten consumers stating that security is ‘important’ or ‘very important’ to them, security and privacy protection are key factors,” said Richardson, echoing the importance of trust in connected devices. “Matter, our next-generation smart home standard, is built with security in mind and offers a level of trust and clarity users can rely on.” 

The Home AI session highlighted the advancements AI brings to creating smarter, safer and more adaptive living spaces. By combining hyper-personalised experiences with advanced security measures, Samsung’s innovations are paving the way for a new era of intelligent, connected homes that integrate into every aspect of daily life. 

LONDON, UK – SEPTEMBER 26, 2024 – Today, Samsung Electronics UK announced innovations that provide users with smarter and more efficient ways to control their energy. The company unveiled new technology and partnerships to optimise energy usage throughout the home.

Ahead of Winter, Samsung UK revealed a host of advancements powered by SmartThings Energy: eco-tech provider Hive’s thermostats will be integrated into SmartThings from the middle of October, so customers will benefit from an extension of the British Gas PeakSave program, and Tesla technology will also be compatible with the SmartThings App.

Increased SmartThings Connectivity with Hive Integration

To further simplify how users manage their energy usage at home, SmartThings Energy is integrating Hive’s thermostats, so that households can control their home’s temperature directly through the SmartThings app.

The integration of Hive thermostats allows consumers to check their home’s current temperature and set new temperature targets as well as setting at home temperatures when customers are on the move. Installing a Hive Thermostat can save customers up to £172 per year on their heating bill^[1]

Maximising Energy Savings through Leading Partnerships

In partnership with British Gas, Samsung UK is also helping households better manage their energy use and make savings when it comes to their energy bills. The expansion of the collaboration between Samsung and British Gas allows SmartThings Energy users to automate appliances, and other connected products, as part of British Gas PeakSave.

The PeakSave program rewards customers for reducing their electricity usage during peak hours, to times when there is more renewable energy readily available. SmartThings Energy users can automate appliances’ operating modes during these times, allowing them to easily take advantage of periods when electricity is half-price due to there being lots of renewable energy available, and rewards users for shifting their electricity to when there is less demand. So far, British Gas has paid over £13 million to 650,000 customers taking part in the scheme.

Boosted Home Energy Experience with Tesla Energy API for UK users

Energy-saving starts within the home, but it doesn’t need to stop there. Earlier this year at CES Samsung announced its collaboration with Tesla for SmartThings Energy and now UK users can benefit from this increased connectivity, allowing users to easily access information relating to users’ energy production, storage and usage via SmartThings Energy.

Made possible through Tesla’s open APIs, the expansion of SmartThings Energy allows users to connect with their Tesla Powerwall, and Solar Inverter for a more streamlined smart home experience.

In addition to making it easier to manage energy consumption, this integration allows for better preparations for power disruptions and outages. SmartThings syncs up with the Tesla app’s Powerwall ‘Storm Watch’ function – meaning in the case of extreme weather events users can be alerted through SmartThings on their connected Samsung TV’s and mobile.

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo also leverages AI, heat pump technology and a 7” display to provide a convenient, entertaining laundry experience that also saves energy.

Elevating the Laundry Experience at Home with AI

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is designed to significantly increase laundry capacity without compromising functionality. This all-in-one combo seamlessly integrates a washer and dryer into a single unit, providing a space-saving and efficient laundry solution with broad functionality. It performs as effectively as two separate machines while conserving valuable space, and more importantly eliminates the need to transfer laundry between those machines after the wash cycle finishes. For users, this means they don’t have to keep checking the wash cycle’s progress in the attempt to prevent unpleasant odors, and can use their time more flexibly.

A key feature of the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is the AI Wash & Dry^[1], which sets a new standard for laundry efficiency. This advanced system uses a range of sensors to optimise both washing and drying for each load, freeing users from having to determine the optimal settings for each cycle. Upon sensing the weight of the laundry, it dispenses the right amount of water and detergent. It also detects the fabric and monitors the level of soiling during the cycle, adjusting wash time and detergent use accordingly. After the wash cycle, the technology optimises the drying process based on the weight and fabric,^[2] ensuring excellent cleaning and drying results. With AI Wash & Dry, users benefit from a thorough, more efficient^[3] and personalized laundry experience.

Another benefit the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo brings is its exceptional energy efficiency. The wash cycle is up to 20% more efficient than the A-grade energy efficiency class threshold^[4], and the wash and dry cycle combined also meets the A-grade energy efficiency class rating^[5]. These impressive results are achieved through advanced heat pump drying technology, which dries clothes quickly, gently and efficiently at lower temperatures. In contrast to conventional combination units which use a heater to blow hot air into the drum, Samsung’s heat pump system continuously recycles hot air and optimises heat transfer by reheating and dehumidifying the hot air through the heat exchanger. This results in the reduction of drying time by up to 60%^[6] and an energy consumption cut of up to 75%,^[7] making it an energy efficient and cost-effective choice for laundry needs. The heat pump method also enhances air circulation, preventing fabric shrinkage and reducing damage to clothing. Furthermore, when the AI Energy Mode^[8] is applied through SmartThings, you can reduce energy use by up to 60% on washing, and up to 30% on drying^[9]. This is made feasible through reducing heater use, one of the most energy consuming parts of the washing machine, and consequently increasing cycle time.

Seamless, Efficient User Experiences

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo offers an enhanced user experience with the AI Home^[10], an intuitive 7” wide LCD display that serves as a central control hub for laundry, and moreover the entire home. The wide display delivers substantial information about the laundry including cycle details, remaining amount of detergent, and energy consumption. When showing cycles, the combo uses machine learning to remember user habits and recommend cycles^[11] based on periodic and seasonal needs.^[12]

When the cycle is finished, it provides an energy and water consumption report that can be viewed on the 7-inch LCD display or the SmartThings App^[13]. Additionally, users have clear view of the 3D Map View, which shows all connected appliances within the home and enables users to seamlessly monitor and control them. Users can check if the oven is on, or get the robot vacuum cleaner to start cleaning, all while they are in the laundry room. The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo was verified to level ‘Diamond’ under UL Solutions’ Marketing Claim Verification IoT Security Rating, proving its competitiveness in security.

Furthermore, users of the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo can now enjoy the updated Bixby^[14] which comes with better understanding capabilities allowing for more responsive interaction than before. Through AI, Bixby can understand complicated and casual conversations, allowing users to give multi-intended, complex commands^[15]. Upon using the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, users can ask “What’s the weather like?”, and then say “Start the wash cycle and lower the living room temperature,” and have their requests finished in one sequence. Bixby provides support for Device Q&A as well, assisting users when they have questions about certain features on their appliances. When an error is displayed on the LCD display, users can ask directly what this means, instead of having to look through the user manual or search on their phones. Lastly, the laundry combo has been updated so that it responds without the “Hi Bixby”, or “Bixby” wake-up phrases. Users can naturally approach the washing machine, and say ‘Open the washing machine door’, and then get a prompt response or see the action carried out.

New Line-up for the UK, includes Largest Ever Washer Dryer with Improved Energy Efficiency and Advanced AI Features

An additional line-up of washer dryers has also launched and now available in the UK, built to take the guesswork out of the perfect wash every time, thanks to latest AI-powered features.

Featuring SpaceMax technology, the new line-up has the largest Samsung washer capacity to date – 11kg for a wash and 6kg for drying. Packed with additional features that help users reduce efforts in treating their laundry, such as AI Wash, delivering a thorough wash with less water and detergent by sensing the weight of the fabric and the level of soiling – saving 15% of detergent in the process^[16] AI Ecobubble^[17]goes one step further by mixing air, water and detergent, to cleverly create bubbles that wash your clothes at cooler temperatures, helping you to bring down your energy bills.

Thanks to these features, the new washer dryer line-up brings significant energy savings to the laundry process, providing 10% greater energy efficiency than any other A-rated models on the market^[18]. Plus with AI Energy Mode, available through the SmartThings app, energy monitoring is extended even further. The new product range includes a BESPOKE AI Washer with A-55% extra energy efficiency,^[1] a Bespoke AI Laundry Combo that achieves an A rating for the complete cycle,^[2] and an A-10% Bespoke Dishwasher^[3]. Drawing on its longstanding dedication to enhancing energy efficiency, Samsung has improved its core technologies to offer better ways to save energy in everyday life.

A More Efficient Washing Experience

The most notable achievement out of Samsung’s high-energy rating lineup at IFA 2024 is the BESPOKE AI Washer. The model, due to launch next year^[4], consumes up to 55% less energy than the minimum energy efficiency requirements for a Class A rating.^[5] Following the A-40% model that launched in the first half this year, the new product has applied Samsung’s technologies to achieve an additional energy saving.

Samsung applies advanced technologies to achieve up to 55% less energy consumption than the minimum energy efficiency requirements for the Class A rating. The core of these advanced technologies is the Bubble Shot, which pulls soapy water through the circulation pump and sprays it on top of the laundry inside the drum. This makes washing more effective by drenching the laundry more easily and allowing the detergent to penetrate clothing evenly. It combines with Ecobubble and algorithms to enhance extra energy efficiency.

The implementation of AI Home^[6] is an additional noteworthy change. This 7’’ wide LCD touchscreen on the device serves as an intuitive control center for the laundry. Not only can users quickly choose their laundry cycle, they can also receive the personalised washing recommendations that suits their habits and periodic needs.^[7] It allows for effective user control and laundry care.

All-in-one, Energy Efficient Laundry Solution

At IFA, Samsung is also displaying the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, which will soon be available in the European market. The model combines a washer and a dryer in a single machine freeing users from the hassle of transferring the load to the dryer after washing. The combo is distinctive in that there is significant improvement in energy efficiency, achieving an A rating across the entire washing and drying cycle,^[8] with an A-20% for washing^[9]This is the highest level in Samsung’s combo lineup in Europe.

Samsung has worked hard to improve the drying efficiency especially. The Heatpump Drying technology dries clothes quickly, gently and efficiently at low temperatures. Furthermore, a specially designed duct structure improves the efficiency of internal air circulation, allowing for the efficient reuse and transfer of heat energy. Meanwhile, to achieve a high energy rating in the wash only cycle, the Bubble Shot Technology is implemented. It make the laundry drench well by spraying soapy water from the top using the circulation pump. As a result, the combo’s complete wash cycle exceeds the minimum energy efficiency requirements for the Class A threshold by up to 20%, with the wash and dry cycle receiving a well-deserved Class A.

Clean Effectively, Save More Energy 

The Bespoke Dishwasher^[10] with extra energy efficiency will be also displayed at IFA 2024. It not only boasts a stylish look with its Kitchen Fit Sliding Door^[11] design that seamlessly matches kitchen furniture, but also offers effective performance while saving energy by up to 10% than the requirements for an A energy rating.^[12]

A WaterJet Clean and an Active Fan Dry system play an important role in delivering this extra efficiency. First, WaterJet Clean delivers intensive cleaning from every angle with rotating dual wash arms, thanks to the specially designed All-in-one Sump module.^[13] It generates a unique flow path to make the product exceptionally power efficient and uses only 7.9 liters^[14] of water ― which is a significantly low level compared to conventional models^[15] ― without impacting its performance.

The Active Fan Dry system,^[16] on the other hand, enhances internal air circulation, leading to less energy consumption. It blows gentle and moderate wind using two fans on the walls of the tub during drying. Since this wind helps evaporate moisture, less latent heat is required from the rinsing water. Therefore, it reduces the amount of energy used for heating the rinsing water. As a result, users can neatly finish the cycle with enhanced energy efficiency.

Additional Energy Savings Through SmartThings Connectivity

With these advancements in hardware, Samsung’s new energy efficient lineup also support SmartThings AI Energy Mode.^[17] After connecting appliances to SmartThings, users can check daily, weekly and monthly power consumption. And when the estimated monthly electricity bill exceeds the targeted amount, they can activate AI Energy Mode through SmartThings app to proactively save energy. Through using the cycles that work with AI Energy Mode, the BESPOKE AI Washer can reduce energy usage by up to 70%^[18].

Visitors at IFA 2024 ― held in Berlin from September 6 to 10 ― will be able to see Samsung’s new energy efficient appliances at Samsung booth. The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is set to launch in the UK in the fourth quarter this year, with ranging updates on the wider product range to be announced.

LONDON, UK – January 24, 2024 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd:  Samsung and British Gas, the UK’s leading supplier of energy and home services, today announce the exciting first step in a long-term venture – aimed at helping customers better manage their energy use and increase the adoption of low carbon heating technologies in homes across Britain.

The collaboration will see British Gas integrate with Samsung’s SmartThings app to help customers optimise their home appliances to use energy when the cost and demand are lower. This is now possible through the integration of SmartThings Energy and British Gas’ PeakSave demand flexibility scheme informing customers (by sending notifications via their smartphone, TV or other compatible devices) of the best times to use household appliances to save money.

The PeakSave scheme includes PeakSave Sundays, running every Sunday until the end of February with half-price electricity from 11am to 4pm for British Gas customers and PeakSave Winter events which encourages customers to move their electricity use out of peak times when there is high demand on Britain’s energy grid.

Scaling up low carbon heating opportunities

The collaboration will also help support customers in their journey to decarbonising their homes by introducing smart technologies in a way that is simple and empowering.  From early 2024, British Gas will include Samsung heat pumps in its offering to British households to support the UK’s commitment to reach net zero by 2050.

The venture will see specially trained British Gas surveyors and engineers working with consumers to explain the benefits of heat pumps and then conducting the installations on-site. Samsung will be supporting workforce training as part of their efforts to upskill the heating industry to ensure there are enough installers to service the expected growing demand.

British Gas also offers customers the chance to purchase heat pumps through flexible financing methods. This, combined with the recently increased UK Government Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant of £7,500, creates an attractive package of financing options to help people make the transition more affordable.

LONDON, United Kingdom – Jan. 4, 2024 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced a collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group to expand its SmartThings platform to support connected cars, including electric vehicles (EVs). The announcement came after the companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on January 3 to develop solutions for future lifestyles that fully integrate the smart home and connected cars.

The two companies will work together for the next-generation smart home to connect Samsung’s SmartThings with Hyundai and Kia’s connected cars, including EVs to develop the “Home-to-Car” and “Car-to-Home” services, as well as an integrated home energy management service.

The Home-to-Car and Car-to-Home services connect the smart home with in-vehicle infotainment systems, allowing for remote control in both directions. Through the SmartThings platform, users will be able to perform a variety of actions pertaining to their cars while at home — starting them, controlling smart air conditioning, opening and closing windows, and checking their charging status^[1]. And from cars, the control of home appliances such as TVs, air conditioners and EV chargers will also be possible.

“This collaboration will enable communication from Home-to-Car and integrated home energy management services that are optimised for future lifestyles,” said Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President at Samsung Electronics. “By connecting the SmartThings platform with vehicles, we’ll be able to significantly enhance the customer experience in both the home and the car.”

Users will be able to adjust their environments with SmartThings by simultaneously operating multiple devices — including vehicles — through routines such as “good morning routine” and “arriving home routine.” For example, when a Galaxy smartphone’s morning alarm goes off, the curtains will automatically open, and the lights and television will turn on. When users are ready to go out for work, the user’s car will adjust itself to an ideal temperature. Also, the smartphone and TV screens will display information such as the EV’s remaining battery and driving range.

“This is an opportunity to make the connected car’s Car-to-Home and Home-to-Car services more convenient in various fields,” said Haeyoung Kwon, Vice President of Hyundai and Kia’s Infotainment Development Center. “We plan to accelerate our technology development to continuously make global Hyundai and Kia customers’ journeys meaningful.”

The integrated home energy management service will allow users to monitor how much energy is consumed by the connected devices in their homes. Energy information of their EVs and chargers will also be available, enabling users to adjust the optimal time for charging their vehicles. EVs connected to the integrated home energy management service offer the possibility of automatically setting the optimal time for charging by factoring in different pricing by time of day^[2], the power demand response (DR) program^[3], photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage system (ESS) data^[4], and time-specific carbon emissions^[5].

To further strengthen Car-to-Home services, Samsung is working closely with HARMAN, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics. HARMAN’s “Ready Upgrade” is a digital cockpit package product that allows hardware and software upgrades. With Ready Upgrade, users will be able to install SmartThings functions to utilise various Car-to-Home services.

Samsung’s SmartThings Station is easy to set up. When a user powers the device on for the first time, pop-up messages will appear on a user’s Samsung Galaxy smartphone to help guide users through the connection process smoothly[2]. Users may also choose the option to efficiently onboard devices with a simple scan of a QR code[3] with a smartphone camera.

Intuitively Adapts to Users Daily Routines

A smart home hub helps multiple devices, including thermostats, lighting, and power outlets, seamlessly interconnect with other devices connected to the smart home server, so they all work together to create a harmonised environment. SmartThings Station makes it easy to automate pre-set routines created via the SmartThings mobile app, without requiring users to control individual devices manually.

With a press of the Smart Button on the SmartThings Station, users can activate a routine created on their SmartThings app. For example, when it’s time for bed, a quick tap could trigger a routine for sleep – which could turn off the lights, close the blinds and lower the temperature. Or, if a movie night is on the cards, a movie routine could turn on the TV and dim the lights. When leaving home, the SmartThings Station can turn off power outlets and unused appliances to save energy, and activate a security system. Users might also want a gaming routine, which could activate specific TV and lighting settings and turn on ‘Do not Disturb’ mode.

Consumers can trigger up to three different routines just by pressing the Smart Button, with short press, long press, or double press activations. Routines can also be activated via the SmartThings app, whether people are at home or away.

Find and Manage Your Devices around Home More Accurately

SmartThings Station is also integrated with Samsung’s SmartThings Find, a rapidly growing asset tracking service. It helps users to find misplaced devices – double pressing the Smart Button can ring your nearby phone making it easier to find[4].

Serving as an always-at-home device scanner, SmartThings Station helps Samsung Galaxy users to keep track of the locations of their registered devices – from smartphones, tablets, watches, and earbuds to personal belongings such as keys or a wallet that have a Galaxy SmartTag or SmartTag+[5] device attached. By routinely scanning for devices, SmartThings Station will tell users the location of connected smart devices or tags around the home, and share an alert on the user’s smartphone when a tag or device leaves or returns home[6].

Fast charging is an ingenious addition to a Smart Home hub because it works so well with the rhythms of life.
