LONDON, UK – January 16, 2024 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced that its 2024 edition of The Frame has earned Pantone Validated ArtfulColor certification from Pantone^[1], a globally renowned authority in colour standards. This certification highlights The Frame’s advanced adaptive colour technology, which ensures an exceptional colour reproduction capability that meets Pantone’s rigorous standards for authentic colour that is nearly indistinguishable to the human eye under standard lighting conditions.

“Consumers are expecting more out of The Frame,” said Yongjae Kim, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Our aim is to always provide the best possible customer experience, and in the case of The Frame, this is accomplished by giving users a display that portrays art in a way that is true-to-life. We’ve achieved this with the Pantone Validated ArtfulColour certification and will continue to work towards optimising the viewing experience further.”

Pantone Validated ArtfulColor evaluates if displays can faithfully simulate a range of physical Pantone Color cards and Pantone SkinTone colour cards under CIE^[2] standard illuminant D65, which portrays illumination that is more-or-less equivalent to that of the average midday light in Western or Northern Europe. The Frame is the world’s first display in the industry to meet this stringent validation, reaffirming Samsung’s leadership in colour fidelity that was first recognized by previous Pantone Validated status across all QLED TVs in 2022.^[3]

LONDON – August 08, 2023 – Samsung Art Store – which enables The Frame owners to continuously transform any space with over 2,300 pieces of digital art, including works from the most renowned artists, museums, and industry tastemakers^[1] – is today welcoming 12 of Dalí’s most striking masterpieces to Samsung Art Store in partnership with the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, the private cultural institution founded by the painter himself with the mission of promoting his artistic, cultural, and intellectual works in Spain and abroad.

Known the world over for an instantly recognisable surrealist style characterised by dreamlike imagery, mind-bending illusions, and meticulous attention to detail, Salvador Dalí remains one of the most enduring and enigmatic artists of the last 100 years. With paintings that invite the viewer to step closer and examine unexpected interplay between the bizarre and mundane, Dalí has been captivating audiences since his first work was displayed in Barcelona, Spain, in 1925.

“This partnership with Samsung gives the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí a global stage for sharing Dalí’s dynamic masterpieces and legacy with an entirely new, digitally native generation,” said Andrea Fisher, Managing Director of merchandise licensing at Artists Rights Society, the rights organisation which helped secure an agreement between Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí and Samsung. “These pieces, selected especially in partnership with Samsung Art Store allow us to show off Dalí’s most striking masterpieces and the stunning display The Frame is capable of.”

The featured works, including some of the artist’s most notable pieces like “The Persistence of Memory” (1931), “The Temptation of St. Anthony” (1946), and “Swans Reflecting Elephants” (1937), have been curated by Samsung and sourced from the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí and other leading institutions and private collections across the world.

Dalí, born in the Catalonian town of Figueres in northeast Spain spent much of his life in that region, creating groundbreaking artworks which would go on to inspire artists and viewers alike for generations. But Dalí always aspired to share his artistic vision with a much wider audience, bringing his striking, surrealist paintings to exhibitions in Paris, London, and New York – and simultaneously seeking creative inspiration and collaboration with world-renowned artists and intellectuals of his time including Coco Chanel, Sigmund Freud, and Pablo Picasso, among others.

In honour of Dalí’s international legacy and the high demand for Dalí artworks on the Samsung Art Store, Samsung recognised the importance of securing this all-important partnership for lovers of art across the globe. Similarly, Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí is expanding how they can provide instant, digital access to some of Dalí’s most artistically significant artworks to millions with this special partnership.

To honour Dali’s arrival on the Art Store, a short documentary celebrating his life and work will be launched on August 8 as part of Samsung’s “Meet the Artist” video series, which promotes the latest and greatest artwork available on the Art Store platform globally. For this latest episode in the series, a Samsung and Publicis agency production team traveled to Dali’s hometown of Figueres and the Costa Brava region of Spain – where Dali lived with his wife Gala for more than 40 years – to showcase the unique landscape and culture that inspired much of his work. With stops at his house in Portlligat, the Dalí Theater-Museum, and Púbol Castle, the nearly 5-minute film explores the inspiration and private life that fueled his career and creative vision, and how the arrival of Dali’s art on the Art Store plays into his extraordinary legacy. Explore Thousands of Works from Artists and Institutions Around the World

Alongside these new pieces from Dalí, viewers can explore thousands of additional artworks from masters such as Claude Monet, Johannes Vermeer and Julia Contacessi in the Samsung Art Store, available for instant display on The Frame. Additionally, Samsung Art Store features art from major global institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the National Gallery Singapore, the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, the Prado Museum in Madrid, and the Berlin State Museums.

This certification recognises that Samsung TV’s Eye Comfort mode provides an optimal viewing experience for consumers spending more time indoors by automatically balancing light exposure and colour temperature to mimic natural outdoor light.

The circadian rhythm has a cycle of inhibiting melatonin secretion for dynamic activities during the day, while activating its release for a comfortable sleep at night. Melatonin is a hormone known to help you sleep well.

VDE’s certification validates the benefits of Eye Comfort mode on users’ circadian rhythm by measuring circadian stimulus at different illuminance levels and assessing the impact on melatonin suppression. The certification process complies with the Circadian Stimulus method based on the research results of the Lighting Research Center in the U.S.

This is one of many verifications Samsung TVs have received representing ongoing efforts to put users and their experience front and center of product design. Previously, Samsung TVs have received ‘Eye Care’ certification from VDE and ‘Glare-Free’ validation from UL, along with ‘Pantone Validated’ and ‘SkinTone Validated’ certifications from Pantone, both signifying that certified Samsung screens satisfy the organisation’s colour accuracy standards.

Traversing both the impenetrable jungle of the Ecuadorian Amazon to the bustling city of Santiago de Chile, Alberto Montt’s work, which reflects his experience and emotions as gleaned from everyday life, has been featured on Samsung Electronics’ Art Store since 2019, gaining him popularity from fans around the world.

Montt is known in particular for his experimental approach to art, which combines different elements to create a new way for people to enjoy his work. With the rising popularity of digital art forms and new mediums, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Montt to discuss his work and the meaning of digital art.

Q: Can you please introduce yourself?

I am a Latin American storyteller. Illustration is my second language. I have about 30 published books, and I do standup performances that mix elements of spoken and graphic language. I am inspired by everyday life and emotional memory, which allows me to relate to the day to day.

Q: Your pieces are known to present cultural and contradictive statements through youthful illustrations. Where does your inspiration for this come from?

Art should force you to think and to question your position in this world. When art does not challenge you, it is pure decoration.

Q: As a storyteller and an illustrator, you utilize digital art as a means to interact with your audience. What can you say about its growing popularity and what are some of the benefits it brings to the art community?

It features multiple mediums, which comes with its advantages and disadvantages. Digital art is a tremendously complex tool that allows communication to be explored from virtually an infinite number of possibilities.

Q: How has your own artwork evolved as digital art and as technology has advanced? Are there any notable changes in your life that were deeply impacted by innovations in technology?

The biggest impact technology has had on my life was allowing me to move around the world while working. These days, I am able to take my workshop and my studio with me wherever I go.

Q: Let’s talk about your partnership with Samsung Art Store. What type of role do you think it plays in the evolving, digital art world?

Being part of the Art Store has allowed me to reach a diverse and global audience in a way that no other platform I know can offer. Being able to exhibit digital art with the value it deserves is an achievement that only technology has allowed. With my own Art Store on The Frame, the images I see change very often, and my whole space is consequently altered and delineated by that randomness and diversity.

Q: Are there any advantages of displaying art on screens such as The Frame?

Absolutely. The range of colors and lighting of the screen completely modify the relationship between the viewer and the work. For me, it has been very exciting to plan the works that will enter the Art Store from that perspective. I would love to see how they are observed and “lived” within people’s everyday spaces.

Q: Can you introduce three of your favorite pieces on the Art Store?

Tigre is a visual exercise that takes me back to my childhood. I grew up in the Ecuadorian jungle and although there are no tigers, the idea of the foliage and the innumerable colors and shades of green moves me deeply.

Laberinto is another one of my favorites. It’s a work that seeks, from graphic simplicity, to represent the complexity of human relationships.

Beso is an illustration that is part of a book published in Colombia that discusses curiosity and emotional awakening. This is the picture I like the most from that book, perhaps because it also has that vegetal exuberance.

Q: Finally, where do you see the future of digital art headed?

For me, art is a game that is constantly changing. That reinvention excites me. It is that surprise that keeps me alive.

The 2022 Samsung Lifestyle TVs won the ‘Eye Care’ Certification from Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker (VDE) in Germany, one of Europe’s largest technical-scientific associations with more than 36,000 members. The certification applies to Samsung’s 2022 Lifestyle TV models including The Frame, The Serif and The Sero. The screens are evaluated on various categories, including ‘Safety’, ‘Gentle to the eyes’, flicker level, uniformity, and colour fidelity.

The new Lifestyle TVs were assessed for safety from blue light emission and melatonin inhibition levels based on a light hazard classification method set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Samsung’s 2022 Lifestyle TVs satisfy the IEC’s standards for screen flickering, which can cause eye fatigue or headache for viewers. They were also recognised for excellence in colour fidelity and picture quality uniformity, both elements of which contribute to eye comfort level while watching TV.

Samsung’s 2022 Lifestyle TVs[1] were also verified as ‘Glare-Free’ by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a leading independent safety science company. UL’s verification validates the ‘Glare-Free’ claim by assessing the products against Unified Glare Rating (UGR) testing standard set by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE). Samsung’s new Lifestyle TV models use a new Matte Display with anti-glare, anti-reflection and anti-fingerprint properties to deliver the optimal brightness and provide the best picture quality without glare.

• Reflected Glare, which determines whether the objects on a TV screen are visible even when external light is reflected on the surface
• Discomfort Glare, which determines whether a TV screen is too bright
• Disability Glare, which determines whether a TV screen is overly bright when watching TV in a dark room

These glare assessments were calculated based on test results of watching TV in both 300 lux, which is equivalent to a brightly lit work area, and in 70 lux, which is usually the value for a dimly lit work area.

Additionally, Samsung’s all new 2022 QLED models received the world’s first ‘Pantone Validated’ certification from Pantone, the world-famous brand in the global colour industry and creator of the Pantone Matching System (PMS).

These models receiving this recognition from Pantone include all 20 newly released models – 15 QLED TVs in both 4K and 8K and five monitors. Samsung’s 2022 QLED TV line-up was recognised for its accurate expression of 2,030 Pantone colours and newly added 110 skin tone shades.

“As TVs become more of an entertainment hub in the home, there’s an increased demand for screens with top-tier picture quality that minimize eye strain,” said Seokwoo Yong, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D Team, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “This recognition from leading global institutes validates our technology that delivers best-in-class images along with the most comfortable watching experience.”
