LONDON, UK – 8th June 2022 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd: 67% of Brits agree that they could do with a bit more joy at the moment.

And when it comes to what brings the UK the most joy, a study commissioned by Samsung1 has revealed it’s the simple things – with a random act of kindness coming top of the list (34%).

Receiving an unexpected gift (30%), discovering forgotten cash in your pocket (28%) and getting a phone call from a loved one (27%) were also ranked highly as positive endorphin givers.

Lucky for Brits, Samsung is bringing a dose of happiness to the UK’s capital as of tomorrow. The first ever ‘Joy ATM’ will be unveiled at the Samsung Experience Store, Oxford Street, where Brits can win free gifts in exchange for acts of joy. It celebrates the launch of Samsung’s new summer promotion, offering customers up to £200 cashback on select device purchases1 including the latest Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The concept is simple. Give a little joy, get a little back. At the touch of a button, the ATM will prompt visitors to perform a fun act; from telling a joke to sharing a smile, in exchange for a complimentary prize.

“Our research[1] says that 67% of the nation could do with a little more joy. So, we want to show our valued customers that when you give a little joy, you get a little back. Our Joy ATM celebrates our incredible cashback promotion, which is our way of giving the nation an extra dose of happiness this summer”, said Annika Bizon, Marketing & Omni Channel Director for Samsung UK & Ireland.

What’s more, rewards have been matched to the top things bringing Brits joy. For the quarter of UK adults that love to get lost in their favourite tunes, Samsung is giving the chance to win Galaxy Buds2 Pro. And for those who like to bag a bargain with a shopping deal or discount code (24%), cash voucher prizes are up for grabs.

The Joy ATM is open to the public for one day only on Friday 9th June between 12pm and 3pm at the Samsung Experience Store on Oxford Street.

June 7, 2023 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced the launch of the new Less Microfiber Filter, an external washing machine filter designed to significantly reduce plastic microfiber emissions during laundry cycles. Designed with inspiration from apparel maker Patagonia and expertise from the global ocean conservation organisation Ocean Wise, the filter builds on the success of last year’s Less Microfiber Cycle to substantially cut microplastics and enable sustainable laundry washing that is both effective and effortless. The new filter is now available in Korea and the U.K., and will roll out to other countries in the third quarter.

“With microplastics emissions to our oceans continuing to increase and regulations being strengthened in many countries, as well as microplastics becoming a growing health concern for people everywhere, Samsung worked with Ocean Wise and Patagonia to engineer technology to help prevent the release of microplastics from our daily life,” said Moohyung Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D Team of Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “With innovations like the Less Microfiber Filter and Cycle, Samsung is helping to enable Everyday Sustainability in a wider array of products and making eco-conscious daily practices second nature in the home.”

From the Less Microfiber Cycle to the Less Microfiber Filter: Stopping Microplastics Before They Enter the Ocean

To help enable customers to cut microplastic emissions from their laundry, Samsung first developed the Less Microfiber Cycle, a wash course that reduces microplastic shedding by 54%[1] in part by leveraging Samsung’s proprietary Ecobubble technology. By using bubbles to help dissolve and absorb detergent, less heat and energy is required to wash clothes, resulting in reduced abrasion.

The Less Microfiber Filter takes this a step further, preventing up to 98%[2] of microplastics released during laundry from escaping into the ocean if used as specified, equivalent to eight 500ml plastic bottles per year[3] when used four times a week. In addition, to help more customers get involved in cutting microplastic emissions, the Less Microfiber Filter has a mountable design style that allows it to be used with standard washing machine models, demonstrating the company’s dedication to long-term sustainability and helping customers move towards embrace sustainability at home. To verify the technology’s efficacy and its features, both Cycle and the Filter were independently evaluated by Ocean Wise using a peer-reviewed microfiber shedding test protocol at the marine organisation’s state-of-the-art lab in Vancouver, Canada.

Convenience Every Day and at Every Stage of the Product Lifecycle

Samsung is committed to developing new products and technologies that takes step towards a more sustainable future. Products should not only be highly effective, they should also be simple, accessible and convenient to use while considering eco-conscious practices in each aspect of product development.

With this in mind, the Less Microfiber Filter is made using recycled plastics and was designed to be long-lasting and easy to maintain. The filter’s blades capture the microplastics with a 65-70 micrometer wide mesh, then redirect and compress these microplastics to one side, meaning the filter only needs to be cleaned roughly once a month.

By connecting with Samsung’s intelligent connectivity platform SmartThings, the filter tracks how full it is from 0 to100%, alerting users when cleaning or other troubleshooting is required via the SmartThings app. The Less Microfiber Cycle, meanwhile, is available as a preset option on select Samsung washing machines from 2022 and can be activated with just the press of a button. It will be expanded to users of previous Wi-Fi enabled Samsung washing machine models through an over the network update this year.

Innovation for a Brighter Future

The development and launch of the Less Microfiber Cycle and Filter are just the latest steps in Samsung’s sustainability journey.

“We’ve been investing in microfiber research for many years, learning how to reduce the fibers that shed from our garments and contribute to the various sources of pollution in the ocean,” said Matt Dwyer, VP of product impact and innovation at Patagonia. “We applaud Samsung for joining us in taking this major step forward in the fight against microfiber pollution.”

LONDON, UK – Month DD, 2023 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd – Samsung UK today revealed the semi-finalists in its annual Solve for Tomorrow Competition. Now entering its third year in the UK, the competition is open to young people aged 16-25, with the aim of unlocking innovative ideas that are powered by technology to solve some of society’s most pressing issues.

Open for applications since 25th October 2022, the Solve for Tomorrow Competition received applications from over 680 young people across the UK and Ireland. With both team and individual applications submitting their entrepreneurial ideas which utilise technology to make a meaningful difference in one of four areas: education, sustainability, diversity, equity & inclusion and social isolation.

The selected 24 ideas spanned across a breath of real-life and lived challenges. From an app, which encourages social connection through digital disconnection (Team 15), to a digital glove, which mimics the warmth, feel and motion of a loved one to facilitate long distance connection (Team 17), the judges were hugely inspired by the creativity and innovative thinking applied. The 24 semi-finalists will take part in a comprehensive programme of workshops, coaching and 121 mentoring with Samsung colleagues and external industry experts. The programme will grant the semi-finalists with access to learning opportunities to explore progressive areas including Design Thinking and emerging digital technologies. This next stage will empower the teams to develop their initial ideas ready for submission for the next round of judging where 10 teams will be selected as finalists to present to a panel of industry experts on 25 May 2023.

Commenting on the announcement, Sophie Edgerley Harris, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Samsung Electronics UK said:

“This stage of the Solve for Tomorrow Competition is hugely exciting as we see the amazing ideas submitted by all entrants and the start of the semi-finalist’s journey. It is evident that more than ever young people are full of creativity and ambition to make a difference in the communities they live in and the networks around them. As they take their next step in the competition, we’re committed to supporting their progress and further boosting their confidence to think boldly and freely as they build on their world-class tech-for-good ideas.”

Speaking about his personal experience as a Solve for Tomorrow judge, Colin Gwynn, Head of Operations at Samsung Electronics UK remarked:

“As a judge, I love being able to see the breadth of ideas that our semi-finalists come up with, but with the incredible talent coming through this programme, decision-making is never easy. I applaud the 2023 cohort for making it through to this competitive stage and encourage all of our young people to maximise the learning and development opportunities that Solve for Tomorrow provides in abundance. The role of technology in being able to solve real world problems has never been more vital, and we have a chance to turbocharge innovation with the great minds we have engaged in this competition.”

This year the competition has expanded its prize offering, crowning two winners within each age category (16-18yrs and 18-25yrs). The winning teams for Solve for Tomorrow, will be announced at the final pitch event on 25th May 2023, and will be awarded £10,000, plus 3 months of dedicated mentoring support from Start-up Discovery School.

LONDON, UK – 13th December 2022 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd: With Christmas celebrations in full swing, ‘tis the season for filling our feeds with festive content. From family portraits by the tree to showing off your Christmas party outfits, there’s plenty of picture moments. Whilst festive feeds are high on the agenda for many, the social media other halves of the UK are feeling the strain.

A new survey from Samsung UK has revealed that the nation is spending an average of nine minutes per shot getting the perfect snap for their partner – the equivalent of 23 hours a year. What’s more, nearly half (48%) expect a rise in their camera duties during the Christmas period.

According to research, almost a quarter (22%) of Brits in relationships admit to feeling like a ‘social media widow’ – defined as the secret content creators hidden behind the lens, having lost the attention of their other half to the feed. However, this December we can expect the feeds to be flipped – a fifth (21%) of social media other halves determined that this is the year they will feature in their partner’s photos.

With the festivities fast approaching, Instagram-worthy picture expectations are high; One in ten Instagram other halves admit to reshooting their Christmas tree reveal because it didn’t look good enough, have snapped multiple boomerangs of the ‘cheers’ before taking a well-earned sip and admit to being chilled to the core in the snow to get the perfect winter portrait of their partner.

The survey also found that social media lovers love to stage scenes for the gram, with one in five (18%) having rearranged the dinner table multiple times to get the shot and 13% admitting to having put on a festive outfit especially, only to get back into pyjamas after the shot has been taken.

To help these social media other halves relinquish their photographer duties this Christmas, Samsung UK has partnered with reality TV stars (and couple) Tasha Ghouri and Andrew Le Page, to show couples across the UK how to easily capture content hands-free. Thanks to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip4 FlexCam feature, both partners have the freedom to enjoy the festivities and perfectly snap every moment:

Capture festive selfies or hands-free videos at various angles by partially folding the Galaxy Z Flip4 to activate Flex Mode[1]

Take high-quality selfies right from the Cover Screen with the upgraded Quick Shot. Start high-quality video recording in Quick Shot mode and then seamlessly switch to Flex Mode to continue recording hands-free without stopping the video – ideal for making sure you never miss a shot.

Tasha Ghouri, Love Island star and model, said: “I love taking festive snaps at Christmas, it’s literally the perfect time of year for the cute content as everything looks so pretty. This year, I’ll be giving Andrew a break from his content capture duties as we can both get in the shot with the Galaxy Z Flip4’s hands-free mode… probably the best present he could ask for!”

Social media other halves admit to having found themselves in some unusual situations:

Having to lay down on the floor outside to get the best angle possible (8%)

Risking their lives for a picture perfect shot by standing in front of a tourist attraction in the middle of oncoming traffic (8%)

Getting weird looks from strangers when they are taking a photo in public (29%)

When asked what’s stopping their shots from getting the ‘gram-worthy’ stamp of approval, never catching their good angle (30%), bad lighting (30%), poor camera quality (22%) and people in the background (21%) are the most common complaints, with a quarter (26%) wishing there was an easier way to take the perfect festive snap.

Although the dedication isn’t just for the Christmas period. One in four (22%) say they spend more time taking pictures of their partner on holiday than having pictures taken together and a quarter (26%) have to put the feed first on date night, refraining from eating/drinking until their partner has finished getting pics of the table spread.

[1] Flex Mode supported at angles 75 and 115°

LONDON, UK – October 11, 2022 – Samsung today announced the UK launch of the company’s most advanced air source heat pump to date, representing an evolution in low carbon heating solutions. The EHS Mono HT Quiet is our next generation high temperature, low noise heat pump, ideal at a time when many consumers, self-builders and developers are looking to make homes and buildings more energy efficient for the future.

With the heat pump market burgeoning in the UK, growing by a staggering 64% between 2020 and 2021[i], it’s clear demand is increasing in the UK’s residential renovation market. As a leading manufacturer, Samsung has brought a durable and sleek low carbon heating solution to the sector which is designed to disrupt the status quo and showcase how sustainable heating systems can co-exist with the latest in architectural design and innovation.

With so many homes in the UK using radiators which require hot water temperatures of 65°C or more to heat rooms effectively, there’s been a perception that heat pumps (which normally operate at temperatures between 40°C – 60°C) won’t suffice. However, with Samsung’s EHS Mono HT Quiet, which can consistently provide hot water of up to 70°C[ii]for domestic heating purposes, older residential spaces that have been heated by gas boilers now have a viable way to transition to heat pumps.

Commenting on the launch, Wim Vangeenberghe, President, Samsung Electronics Air Conditioner Europe said: “With the Future Homes Standard requiring new build homes in the UK to be future proofed with low carbon heating by 2025, change is afoot and we’re likely to see an acceleration in the switch from fossil fuel heating systems to more energy efficient heat pumps. High temperature heat pumps are presenting an interesting alternative for homeowners looking to move away from traditional heating solutions, such as gas boilers, without compromising on performance. With the launch of the new EHS Mono HT Quiet, we’re proud to offer the UK market an innovative low carbon heating solution that can help them take that important step forward.”

Other stand-out features of the new Samsung HT Quiet heat pump include:

Quiet Mark certification – the heat pump features a double-layered sound insulation system that blocks and absorbs noise produced by system vibrations, operating at noise levels as low as 35 d(BA)[iii] – making the unit Quiet Mark

High levels of energy efficiency – the EHS Mono HT Quiet has a SCOP* of A+++ energy.[iv]efficiency rating.

A new era in sleek design – the unit is styled in a dark grey colour which complements outdoor facades.

Ready for smart living – the unit can be remotely controlled from a phone with Samsung SmartThings[v], allowing people to monitor energy usage daily, weekly and monthly at a glance.[vi]

Joseph Raftery, Heating Product Manager at Samsung Climate Solutions added: “The HT Quiet is a huge step forward in the greener heating journey, helping to take the UK closer towards net zero ambitions with appropriate government and industry support. Not only can it match boiler leaving water temperatures and is our quietest unit yet, we’ve also stress tested our new heat pump to reliably provide 100% heating performance** even in extremely cold weather as low as -25°C[vii] so this is technology you can rely on.”

The EHS Mono HT Quiet is the first in Samsung’s premium high temperature heat pump line up. It will be available in the UK from the start of November in 3 capacities (8, 12, and 14KW), including both the single and three-phase power supply system. All capacities will come in the same chassis.

Eight in 10 (81%) of the respondents were keen to work in an occupation that could help to solve environmental and societal issues. Indeed, environmental focused jobs topped the list as young people worry about the future of the planet with 95% admitting to being concerned about global warming and sustainability.

The research comes as Samsung UK continues to drive awareness to key issues facing our world via its Solve for Tomorrow competition, a global initiative which celebrates young people who have unique and extraordinary ideas for how to use technology to solve society’s biggest issues.

Over a third (38%) of participants surveyed said that they would not consider working for a company that did not have purpose at its heart with 88% revealing that they would leave a job if the company did not match their values.

The pandemic and recent world events highlighted the need to address societal problems, which is why 94% of young Brits feel that UK businesses should be doing more to solve global issues, and 91% would like to be actively involved with trying to help through purpose-driven careers.

The majority (97%) of those surveyed also felt that they want to become an individual inspiration to succeeding generations through their future career path.

LONDON, UK – 26th September, 2022 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd announced the winners of the second iteration of the Solve for Tomorrow: Next Gen Competition following a summer of workshops and ideas generation. This year, the programme encouraged 11-15 year olds across the UK to learn about the basics of Design Thinking, careers in STEM, and to create and submit their own ideas of how technology could solve a societal issue.

As part of Samsung’s ongoing mission to defy barriers to help young people from all backgrounds find their purpose in tomorrow’s world, Solve for Tomorrow: Next Gen seeks to empower the next generation of innova tors, inviting students aged 11-15 to imagine a better world. The programme provides free online resources for schools, youth groups and families to help inspire the next generation of innovators. In 2022, young people learnt the basics of ‘Design Thinking’ and got a glimpse into creative STEM careers such as design and marketing with employees from Samsung. They then used everything they learnt to inspire their entries for the Solve for Tomorrow: Next Gen Competition, with 481 entries submitted to the judging panel.

This August, a panel of five Samsung judges named the 2022 winners of the competition. In the 11-13 age category Alek, aged 13, from Hallows Catholic School, was chosen as the winner. Alek’s idea was ‘Green Solutions’, a knowledge sharing platform for farmers, to encourage them to discover and implement more sustainable farming practices. Runner-up was Filip, aged 11, also from Hallows Catholic School. Filip came up with ‘The Brilliant Buzzer’, which is a solar powered pollinating drone that uses cameras and AI to protect endangered plants.

In the 13-15 age category Finn and Josh from Grange Park School (Specialist School for Autism), both aged 14, were chosen as winners with their idea ‘Bin’. This smart bin educates users about the journey of their rubbish, aiming to increase recycling. Runner-ups were Amelie, Megan, and Laila, all aged 14 from Clayton Hall Academy with the ‘Smart Plug’. This plug reduces energy consumption and prevents wastage of electricity.

Winners will receive a Samsung Galaxy phone, and will get a VIP invitation to a Samsung event later this year. Their teachers will also receive a Samsung Galaxy Book, and their schools will get a Samsung QM49R UD Screen. Runner-ups will each receive a pair of Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro.

The Solve for Tomorrow: Next Gen Competition will return again in Spring 2023, so watch this space for more innovative ideas and inventions from young people all across the UK.

LONDON, UK – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd announced a new study, revealing that nearly a third of the UK waste food every week. This rises to more than half (52%) when it comes to Gen Z and millennials, identified as the most wasteful generations for not using up what’s in the fridge.

Nearly half of young adults admit to binning up to eight items every week, contributing to the growing volume of abandoned household foods. Many young adults prefer ordering takeaways (55%) or going out to eat (40%), even when there’s already something at home. Others will buy multiple ingredients for a specific dish only for them to be leftover (34%).

Almost 40 percent said they don’t realise the quantity they are cooking until it is too late, however for 31 percent, the problem starts at the shop where they don’t notice how much they’ve bought. Around a quarter of young adults enjoy hosting home gatherings, but always have the nibbles lingering post party.

Despite having the most surplus fridge items, a quarter (25%) of young adults feel guilty for wasting anything at all. In fact, they are most eager to turn things around, with over 20 percent wanting more low waste meal inspiration and a quarter (24%) wishing they knew how to preserve foods for longer.

This comes as Samsung UK teams up with TikTok Chef, Nigel Kabvina (@sxmplyni), for Zero Waste Week (5th – 9th Sept), to empower young people to keep their foods fresh and make sure no items go unused.

The UK’s top 10 most abandoned household foods:

Salad

Bread

Bananas

Potatoes

Cooked leftovers

Carrots

Milk

Tomatoes

Berries (raspberry, blueberries, and strawberries)

Eggs

Nigel Kabvina, TikTok Chef, said: “It’s difficult to make the most of everything in the fridge before it goes off. Be it a blackening banana or wrinkly sweet potato, you would be surprised at how creative you can get with the foods you often find lingering at the end of the week. I’m excited to bring people on my Zero Waste journey with Samsung UK.”

Young adults will spend almost double the national average on wasted food, with £516 a year going to waste, compared to older generations who waste £156 on average. A third of Gen Z (34%) would also like to get more savvy with what’s left in their fridge to see how this can reduce their bill.

In fact, over half of Brits (56%) admitted they are more likely to try and keep the food in the fridge as long as possible, since the rise of inflation.

Nigel’s top ‘abandoned food’ hacks

FRIDGE SHUI

Rearranging your fridge to put fruit and veg in direct sight line encourages you to eat it and regularly use it in cooking. Swap them over to the sauce and small jar shelf which you rarely use, as those products can last months. Also, if you have the Samsung Family Hub you can track expiration dates on items in and outside the refrigerator[1], via the ‘View Inside’ feature.

‘FRESH’ HATES AIR

Purchasing some airtight containers or mason jars can really help keep your food stay fresher for longer, as most store-bought packaging won’t protect products from spoilage once opened. This will expand the life of your items and keep their taste in check.

REGROW

If you have products like spring onion and baby lettuce about to expire, cut the bulb (bottom root) off and place in a small glass with some water. Replace the water every three days and within a week you will see a new fresh vegetable start to grow.

PIF IT: PICKLE INFUSE FERMET

When you have certain fridge items about to go off, why not pickle it, ferment it or use it to infuse into some alcohol or brine. The acidity keeps it alive for longer and it steps up cooking by creating complex flavours. Try mushrooms infused with bourbon or strawberries pickled in distilled vinegar for a delicious addition to your salads.

Tanya Weller, Marketing Director of Home Appliances at Samsung UK&I, said: “The research shows a huge demand from young people on wanting to elevate their approach when it comes managing what’s in their fridge. We’re excited to equip people with simple tools to lower their everyday food waste and show the role technology must play. For example, the Triple Cooling System built into our Family Hub[2]range allows precise temperature and humidity controls in each zone of the fridge, to help your food stay fresher longer.”

Stay tuned for more of Nigel’s ‘abandoned food’ recipes and hacks on the Samsung KX website.

[1] View inside your fridge from anywhere* built-in cameras which let you control the contents of your fridge at home or on the go, including automatically tagging expiration dates

[2] The Family Hub keeps different foods fresh and tasty in the optimal conditions

LONDON, UK – July 2022 – Research reveals almost half (45%) of Gen MZs (1981-2005) say their ‘working from home’ space has cluttered their home, impacting their mood (28%), creativity (22%), productivity (21%) and inspiration (19%).

The study by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. found nearly three quarters (72%) have had to make changes to their homes to adapt to the new working conditions, such as installing IT equipment from work (43%), buying additional furniture, such as a desk or a chair (40%), and changing the layout of their living space (36%).

In terms of where Gen MZs are working within the home, 32% sit on the sofa and 30% even work from their bed, showing a lack of suitable space within the home. It’s therefore not surprising that just 20% are ‘very satisfied’ with their working from home set up. And compared to when they first started working from home, almost two in five (39%) feel less productive now and 38% are bored of doing it.

The top WFH bugbears include:

Other family members distracting in the house (32%)

Not getting to go outside enough (29%)

Limited social interaction (27%)

Lack of space (25%)

Clutter (24%)

Not being able to switch off after work (23%)

To overcome these issues, Samsung Electronics Ltd. has partnered with renowned decluttering expert, Lucy Mansey, to share the best ways to minimise clutter and be more organised in the home.

Hailed by Davina McCall as ‘the Marie Kondo of Britain’, Lucy Mansey is one of the UK’s leading organisational experts and has worked with a plethora of celebs to help them declutter and organise their homes.

Lucy Mansey’s ‘top tips’ on minimising clutter in your WFH space:

Get products off surfaces and the floor by utilising your vertical space. Whether that be a pegboard for paperwork, pots to house stationery, or cleverly built shelves around a doorframe to store books and folders, using the wall space right in front of you will alleviate the clutter around you.

Look at every area in your house, could you create an office under the stairs by carving out some space? Or even an area in between wardrobes with a little desk nestled in might double up as the perfect solution to your WFH needs.

Have products that are multifunctional and space saving, like the slimline Samsung M8 Smart Monitor where everything you need is on one screen. No more clunky PCs, TVs and phones, as this clever monitor does it all, and in style.

A chunky, solid desk can take up valuable space, so why not look at space saving options such as a modern-day bureau or one that neatly folds away? You could even build shelving that doubles up as a standing desk for when your legs need a little love.

Adopt a ‘bouncer’ attitude to your working area and allow for a ‘one in, one out policy’ so if you buy something, think about what may need to be donated or given to a friend to ensure items don’t build up.

If you’re shooting content from home, have a caddy that neatly stores backdrops and props; this can then be easily tucked away at the end of the day for when you want to revert back to using your Samsung Smart Monitor as a TV.

Build in storage wherever you can. Ironically, the more storage you have, the more space you will save!

Damon Crowhurst, Head of Display at Samsung Electronics UK, said: “Samsung’s Smart Monitor M8 is the perfect product for those looking to keep their productivity levels high while reducing clutter. Available in four colours – Warm White, Sunset Pink, Daylight Blue, and Spring Green – it’s the ultimate space-saving solution for work and play. With a unique, ultra-stylish design that breaks the mould, it’s an elegant interior accessory with the latest features to match. These include the newly upgraded Smart Hub which lets it wirelessly connect to home office devices, as well as all major streaming and entertainment apps like Disney+ and Netflix. And with Samsung Gaming Hub, gamers can dive into their favourite experiences by pairing a controller – no console required.”

Available on the Samsung UK online store, the M8 Smart Monitor can be purchased for £699 here.

New research identifies Britain’s most seldom spotted creatures

The nightjar, the pine marten, and the golden eagle among the UK’s most elusive species

Millions of Brits have never seen common native animals in real life such as owls, hedgehogs, and badgers, according to a new report released today.

The research identifies Britain’s most elusive animals with the easily camouflaged nocturnal bird the nightjar topping the list with only 7% of Brits having seen one in the wild.

Protected species and woodland native the pine marten came in as second least seen (11%) alongside the solitary pygmy shrew (11%).

The new study, which surveyed 2,000 Brits, was specially commissioned by technology giant Samsung UK, who has partnered with wildlife photographers Kyle Moore and Ian Wood to document a series of the UK’s nocturnal using the Samsung Galaxy S22’s Night Mode function.

Other creatures’ adults haven’t seen in their natural habitats include the dormouse (87%), muntjac deer (82%) and pipistrelle bat (84%).

Respondents were asked which the UK’s most elusive creatures they had seen in the wild with two thirds (66%) revealing they have never seen Britain’s native red squirrel and 47% claiming to have never seen a hedgehog.

Four in ten (41%) of those surveyed said they didn’t know bats were native to the UK, despite the nocturnal creatures representing a quarter of all indigenous mammals in Britain.

Almost a third of Brits (36%) weren’t aware that species of deer could be found in cities, even though the deer population in the UK is at the highest it’s been for over 1,000 years. Does and stags are regularly spotted in urban areas and villages around the UK, from Glasgow, to Sheffield and London.

Over a quarter of respondents (27%) admitted they’d only had the opportunity to see wildlife like owls, bats, and badgers when at wildlife sanctuaries or zoos.

Wildlife populations are growing across UK cities making it easier than ever to spot critters in the back garden or crossing city roads, with London alone being home to more than 15,000 known species across birds, insects, and mammals.

When it comes to capturing pictures and video of wildlife in their garden, 62% believe they don’t have the right access technology to snap animals, with 59% wishing they had access to high quality cameras for this reason.

Samsung UK has partnered with TV and radio presenter Angellica Bell to create a video guide to help the public spot and safely capture photography of British wildlife using the Galaxy S22 and its Night Mode and Pro camera functions.

The guide follows wildlife photographers Ian Wood and Kyle Moore as they spot and snap pictures of a Britain’s most elusive animals including badgers, hedgehogs, and deer.

Dr Bryony Tolhurst, Lecturer in ecology at the University of Brighton said:

“It’s no surprise that the Nightjar and the Pine Marten are named as the UK’s most elusive animals as they only live in certain places and are secretive and hard to spot. Despite popular belief, UK towns and cities aren’t devoid of wildlife at all and in fact are home to a wide array of mammals, birds, and insects. Some of the animals on the list are nocturnal and live on our doorsteps, so some of the best opportunities to see the animals is when the sun starts going down.”

Ashrita Seshadri, Head of Brand Marketing at Samsung UK added:

“When developing the Samsung Galaxy S22, we wanted to give our community the most advanced camera experience possible. Night Mode allows users to capture amazing shots in lowlight and night-time conditions making it the ultimate tool for the urban wildlife photographer just as these illusive animals come to life.”

Angellica Bell said:

“In the UK’s built-up urban cities, it’s easy to forget just how many amazing animals are living alongside us. From the urban fox on the prowl to a herd of deer living in a housing estate, it was incredible to work with two talented wildlife photographers who were able to capture unbelievable footage of these animals. Following their simple tips, you could be on your way to becoming an accomplished wildlife snapper in no time, and capture some of our incredible wildlife too!”
