Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has announced an update to its global connected living platform, SmartThings — further enhancing the AI Home experience.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has announced an update to its global connected living platform, SmartThings — further enhancing the AI Home experience. SmartThings introduces new features and improvements each quarter to deliver a more convenient and seamlessly connected lifestyle for users.

The highlight of this update is the integration of SmartThings with Samsung Health, designed to improve users’ sleep environments while enabling more personalised automation experiences. The update also expands Calm Onboarding to support a wider range of devices and adds compatibility with the Matter 1.4 standard.

Deborah Honig, Chief Customer Officer, Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland, said: “The home should be a sanctuary where our technology is intuitively designed to give our customers value. Our SmartThings platform is the not-so-secret ingredient that enables this — helping you control your products, your energy use and turning your house on and off at the touch of a button.

“These latest updates to SmartThings are about real, everyday improvements — from creating a more restful sleep environment by adjusting lighting and temperature automatically based on your sleeping schedule, to sending a voice message through the house via the SmartThings App when you’re running late. It’s all about making smart living feel simple, seamless and truly personal.”

Samsung Newsroom outlines some of the key changes below.

(Left) A sleep environment summary card displayed in Galaxy Now Briefing, (Right) a detailed sleep environment report

Smarter Sleep Environments with Samsung Health Integration

Sleep environment reports[1]from Samsung Health on Galaxy devices help users create optimal conditions for rest by providing detailed insights into key factors — such as temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels and light intensity — through connected devices and sensors. These reports summarise the previous night’s sleep conditions and offer personalised suggestions for improvement.

When paired with a Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring, the latest update enables SmartThings to automatically adjust the environment based on the user’s actual sleep and wake times.[2] For example, routines can be set to turn off lights and the TV at bedtime or to open curtains and play music in the morning.

Greater Flexibility with SmartThings Routines

With the latest update, SmartThings now supports automation routines based on recurring schedules — weekly, monthly or annual — offering added flexibility for a variety of scenarios. For instance, users can automatically change the colour of smart lights to celebrate special occasions like family birthdays.

In addition, SmartThings routines now integrate with Samsung TV Plus on 2025 Samsung TV models. This allows users to include entertainment preferences in their smart home routines — whether it’s setting the TV to turn on the news in the morning or switching to a favourite channel at a preset time to ensure they don’t miss a show.

Broadcasting via SmartThings-Connected Speakers

A new broadcasting feature allows users to send voice messages across SmartThings-connected speakers, making in-home communication more convenient. For example, if a parent is away and sends a voice message through the SmartThings app — “I’ll be home soon, but have a snack from the fridge if you’re hungry” — it will automatically play on the designated home speaker. With real-time message delivery, families can stay connected no matter where they are.

Expanding Calm Onboarding to More Devices

Samsung has offered the Calm Onboarding[3] feature since late 2023, streamlining setup for Samsung home appliances purchased through Samsung.com/uk or official Samsung stores by linking the entire product journey — from order and delivery to connection with the SmartThings app.

In the latest SmartThings update, Samsung is expanding Calm Onboarding beyond its own products to include compatible third-party smart home devices for a more seamless and intuitive connectivity experience. Users who purchase SmartThings-compatible smart home devices directly from Samsung.com/uk will now receive purchase and delivery updates within the SmartThings app. Additionally, users will receive step-by-step onboarding instructions to simplify product setup. The rollout will begin in Korea, with plans to expand to other countries.[4]

Matter 1.4 Support

SmartThings continues to advance the IoT landscape by expanding its support for Matter 1.4. The latest version of the standard includes a wide range of energy management devices — such as water heater, heat pump, solar power device, battery storage device, mounted on/off control switch and mounted dimmable load control device. These newly supported device categories build on existing popular device types like lights, thermostats, switches, air conditioners, air purifiers, fans, door locks and more.

By integrating AI-powered routines, broadening device compatibility and adopting the latest Matter standard, SmartThings reinforces its ongoing commitment to innovation — making the connected home more intelligent, energy-efficient and seamless for users and their families.

[1]As of April 2025, the Calm Onboarding feature for Samsung products is available in 14 countries including Korea, the United States, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. Further expansion is planned throughout the year.

[2]This support is planned for countries where the IoT Marketplace, which sells SmartThings compatible smart home devices on Samsung.com, is available. It will be first applied in Korea and gradually expanded to other countries.

[3]The Sleep environment report feature is available on Samsung Galaxy smartphones running One UI 7.0 or later and Samsung Health version 6.29 or later. Availability may expand in the future. For more information on compatible devices that can measure sleep environments, refer to the Sleep condition report under the “How to Use” section in the SmartThings app.

[4]Setting routines based on sleep conditions may not be supported in certain countries. This feature is available on Samsung Galaxy smartphones with One UI 7.0 or Samsung Health version 6.29 or later, with plans for future expansion. A connected device capable of detecting sleep and wakefulness — such as Galaxy Watch4/5/6/7, Galaxy Watch Ultra, Galaxy Fit3 and Galaxy Ring — is required. For more information, refer to the “Accessories” section in the sleep tab of the Samsung Health app.

LONDON, United Kingdom – 9th April 2024 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced that it has launched its 3D Map View feature, which was first unveiled at CES 2024 and is now available in all countries with SmartThings access.

Map View streamlines home management by turning real floor plans into virtual images in the SmartThings app. Users can clearly see their devices and conveniently adjust lighting, temperature, air quality and energy consumption at any time and place.

Map View addresses the challenge of managing the growing number of connected devices in every home worldwide and eases smart home management by eliminating the need to find each device separately before using it. It shows users their entire home at a glance and updates in real time as more devices are connected.

Map View’s previous version was a 2D model that only worked for homes where the floor plan was provided. However, this newly updated 3D Map View takes advantage of Spatial AI in Samsung devices — such as the Bespoke Jet Bot — using LiDAR[1] sensors in the device to precisely measure and map a home’s layout. Alternatively, users can simply draw a map of their home themselves on the SmartThings app and drop their smart devices into each room, allowing them to easily understand the shape and spatial conditions of their homes on 3D maps.

The feature has also enhanced its filter function to allow for more efficient monitoring and control of required devices. It aims to offer a more customised and user-friendly smart service by using AI characters, which were also unveiled at CES 2024, by the end of the year.

Availability

Map View is available through the SmartThings app on Android and iOS mobile devices[2], as well as TVs[3]. Controls for the feature will also be made available through additional hubs, such as Family Hub refrigerators[4], within the first half of the year.

Initially, Map View was rolled out in Korea and the United States last year. But now, it can be used in all countries with access to the SmartThings app.

“Samsung is constantly working to enable customers to control their home devices without any inconvenience at any time and place, and Map View is the result of these efforts” said Seungbeom Choi, Head of Device Platform Centre at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to introduce a variety of relevant services and features so our customers can enjoy optimal smart home experiences with a better life.”

Samsung is currently collaborating with construction companies to expand Map View beyond homes to apartments and office spaces. The company aims to help create smart environments for customers worldwide by adding functionality. These include an optimised user experience (UX) for large screens that assists B2B operators with signage, and Quick Control, which enables users to easily access key functions.

[1]Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors use laser light to detect objects in 3D for the accurate representation of environments.

London, UK – Thursday 15 June 2023 – With over three quarters of the nation unaware of the potential of smart home tech, Samsung SmartThings has commissioned a new trends report titled, ‘Untapped: The Home Tech Evolution’. Lifting the lid on the current landscape and the extent to which future trends such as emotion detection, energy reconfiguration, and augmented reality could power up the way people use smart tech in their homes in the future.

Samsung partnered with consumer behavioural analysts TrendWatching to undertake its most extensive research to date into the macro trends shaping the smart home tech landscape; predicting that in the future, mirrors will be able to detect our mood, electric cars will be able to power up our houses, and augmented reality will transform culinary experiences in the kitchen.

These trends were bolstered by a poll of 2,000 adults to offer additional real-time attitudinal insights about ways these trends are already in play today, shaping the way people live their lives.

The top smart tech unknowns:

Place smart buttons around the home to allow you to easily turn on or off any connected appliances (71%)

Create a safer home environment (68%)

Alert you to stock up the fridge when ingredients are running low (66%)

Integrate the management of energy devices (65%)

Programme the oven or cooker to come on (61%)

Syncing the doorbell camera to the TV to speak to visitors (53%)

Samsung is a pioneer in the Connected Living space, its innovative SmartThings app allows users to do all the above and more.

Despite the national knowledge gap when it comes to smart tech potential, usage in general is on the up, with over a third (38%) using it to monitor health and track sleep patterns (31%).

In the home more broadly, nearly two thirds (62%) of the UK have been increasing their culinary skills with the help of technology, and more than a quarter (28%) said notifying family members when they need help is a key part of their usage.

James Kitto, Vice President for Samsung UK Mobile said: “There’s never been a more revolutionary time for connected living. Smart home technology is more sophisticated and intuitive than ever before, empowering people and improving lives in ways unimaginable even five years ago – from breaking down barriers around accessibility, enabling consumers maintain healthier lifestyles and helping save money, the possibilities are endless.

“At Samsung, we’re constantly exploring what the smart home of the future will look like as we continue to make huge strides into a more digital world. Today, Samsung SmartThings lets people connect, automate and manage all their smart devices via one easy-to-use free app, allowing people to control their energy use, simplify the management of technology in the homes and even be notified if a loved one needs help.”

Powering our household energy

As a consequence of soaring household energy bills and climate change, TrendWatching researched that the energy crisis could fast-track the green energy transition by [i] five to ten years.

After reading more information about heat pumps, 30% of consumers [ii] said they were likely to consider installing a heat pump in the next 12 months. And four in ten (40%) [iii] UK consumers are considering purchasing energy-efficient solutions, such as solar panels and battery storage. In fact, more than half (53%)[iv] believe homes will be majority powered by solar energy in 50 years.

The UK heat pump market grew 26% from 2021 to 2022[v].

Samsung’s SmartThings Energy (powered by Chameleon Technology) already allows users to connect to their smart meter to see their actual energy usage and connect compatible devices to get a more detailed view of how much specific appliances cost to run in the home. TrendWatching uncovered that all-electric eco homes of the future will use electric heating sources powered by renewable energy and electric vehicles will provide a personal supply capable of powering homes.

Health-enhancing smart tech at home

A positive home environment has never been more important to enhance both physical and mental health, due to blurred lives fuelled by hybrid working, increasingly hectic lives and an uptick in anxiety.

Samsung’s survey revealed that people use tech to exercise (42%), monitor their overall health (38%), track their sleep patterns (31%) and manage their stress levels (24%). With wellbeing apps expected to reach a projected market volume of £722m by [vi] 2027, it’s only a matter of time before consumers expect their smart homes to support them in this quest too.

The latest Galaxy Watch5 series features Samsung’s BioActive Sensor technology, it monitors your unique sleeping patterns – whether you are awake, achieving deep sleep, or measuring your blood oxygen levels.

With the global emotion detection and recognition market predicted to reach US$103.1 billion by 2030, as predicted by TrendWatching we could see smart mirrors that suggest workouts based on a user’s mental state and smart speakers that play music based on their emotions. Consumers will come to expect home innovations that help boost equilibrium and create tranquil spaces to relax and recharge.

Unobtrusive tech for stress-free and stylish living

Today’s consumers are paradoxical: they seek tech-enabled superpowers around the house, but don’t want their home or personal space feeling cluttered – and gravitate towards unobtrusive and intuitive technology that doesn’t infringe on their personal space or overpower the landscape of their home.

More than a quarter (28%) of those considering upgrading their devices at home want to focus on the quality of the technology rather than the quantity. New research also shows there is an increasing appetite to upgrade tech to ensure it integrates into the home aesthetic, with 26% saying they want tech to blend in with their decor seamlessly, with discreet interfaces and materials that take inspiration from interior design.

For example, Samsung’s wall mounted The Frame TV can go from streaming Netflix to displaying wall art[1]. Where thanks to the super thin gapless design, matte display and picture frame border, homeowners can now make use of what would otherwise be blank space and accentuate a room’s décor with photos and artwork.

The future will be fully hands-free, with gesture control as well as facial recognition and other biometric technologies that will enable touchless doorbells, ovens and washing machines.

Personalised devices for independent living

Connected living can revolutionise the lives of older adults and those with physical or sensory disabilities – meeting rising consumer demand for inclusivity.

An increasingly ageing population, with almost one in five (19%) people in the UK over 65, is putting pressure on society as well as the National Health Service. In response, researchers are developing [i] at-home devices that monitor patients remotely. When polled, more than a quarter (28%) said using smart tech to notify family members if they need help is a key part of smart device technology. Meanwhile, one in six (17%) have bought smart devices to track the health of elderly relatives in the past two years.

With inclusivity more front of mind than ever before, an increased appetite for personalised smart home devices that allow greater independence with increased accessibility will shape a better, more hopeful future.

The rise of culinary smart tech

The kitchen is now the beating heart of the home, transcending from a purely culinary space into one that is more sensorial. Since the pandemic, and due to rising costs, more people are now entertaining at home.

Innovation in culinary technology is moving at pace with devices becoming smarter, sleeker and more acutely tapping into the needs of consumers. Nearly two thirds (62%) of the UK have been increasing their culinary skills at home with the help of technology, with a third (32%) using new kitchen devices or features on their existing appliances. One in six (15%) have even become more adventurous with their cooking in the last 12-18 months due to smart technology.

Analysts predict that immersive tech will leap from entertainment to the kitchen next: augmented reality (AR) glasses and virtual reality (VR) headsets will guide people with intuitive and engaging step-by-step instructions allowing home chefs to recreate restaurant-quality meals.

Vicki Loomes, Head of Trends at TrendWatching who conducted the consumer behavioural trends research said: “The smart home is rapidly evolving, and consumers are looking for their home to serve them in new ways. That includes helping them reduce their footprint and their bills with smart energy-saving devices. At the same time, concerns about the future mean that many are looking to create more relaxed living spaces that can actively improve their health and wellbeing.”

LONDON, UK – 13 December 2021 – With Christmas less than two weeks away, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd has today released the results of a study which reveals

LONDON, UK – 13 December 2021 – With Christmas less than two weeks away, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd has today released the results of a study which reveals that 30% of people are planning to cut the amount they usually splurge on gifts, food, drink, and parties during the festive season.

Driven by spiralling living costs and higher energy bills – with over half (53%) citing rising gas and electricity costs as a reason to spend less this Christmas – the study found that almost four in 10 adults are worried about household expenditure, with over a third (37%) saying it is ‘getting out of hand’.

And with the cost of feeding and entertaining one guest at Christmas estimated to be £25 on average (excluding gifts and household bills), the financial squeeze is on.

The research has been commissioned by Samsung to lift the lid on the ways in which Brits are making cuts this Christmas, and crucially, what can be done to help – especially as just under a third of people (29%) said they have no idea what steps could be taken in order to reduce or control their energy bills.

Last month, Samsung launched SmartThings Energy, a free service available to download on any Android or iOS smartphone that lets users see exactly how much they’re spending on energy in their home – before receiving their bill. In addition, the platform also enables users to set budgets and reduce energy usage, giving more control.

Commenting on the findings, Teg Dosanjh, Director of Connected Services and Technology, Samsung UK and Ireland said: “Millions of Brits say they’re cutting back on their spending this Christmas due to various pressures, which is a stark warning that more conscious budgeting is likely to become a new way of life in 2022. In addition to the traditional costs around hosting and gifting, rising energy prices and general energy usage is a huge factor of this.

Historically, this is one area we’ve not been able to control, which is emphasised by a third saying they don’t know what steps to take in the right direction – however with free services like SmartThings Energy, we want to show that it is possible for energy data to be more visible, and that your next energy bill doesn’t have to be a nasty surprise.

We hope this level of control will mean people can focus on the things that matter this holiday – spending quality time with loved ones.”

Whilst the obvious costs of hosting a bumper Christmas are known to many households, there are also many invisible costs of hosting, including having the heating on for longer, cooking more than usual or using more electronic devices. Six in 10 (62%) have noticed a spike in their energy bills in the last year, with 14% of people hit with annual bills between £912 and £1,200 for electricity.

Lisa Conway Hughes, Independent financial advisor said: “The nation has a pent-up desire to splurge on Christmas festivities, but household costs are mounting up with rising energy costs, food prices, tax hikes and cuts to credit. Over the last 18 months, one in five people have even missed payments on their energy bills[1]. But, the good news is that Christmas doesn’t need to be excessively trimmed if people get on track with money management and utilise free services like SmartThings Energy to take back control of their bills.”

But it’s not all doom and gloom as we’re a nation of savvy spenders. Over a quarter of Brits (27%) aren’t planning on making any cuts to their Christmas budgets given they’ve been saving for this moment across the year, and just over a fifth of people (22%) confess to saving money by finding items at lower cost.

Teg added: “Christmas shouldn’t be about compromise. We want people to enjoy time with friends and family without the anxiety of hidden costs in the background. With talk of an energy price cap increase in 2022, it’s encouraging to see that 40% of Brits said one of their New Year’s methods for ‘turning things around financially’ would be having better control over household expenditure. We hope services like SmartThings Energy can make a small difference to helping them achieve this goal, and ultimately, taking the right steps to reduce their household energy consumption.”

SmartThings Energy is a world-first service that will allow UK households to manage their energy usage, with any UK provider, directly from their phones and completely free of charge. Housed on Samsung’s SmartThings platform, and powered by smart energy technology company Chameleon Technology, customers can add their smart meter to see how much energy they’re using, understand how much it’s costing them and even set and track budgets all from their phone.

The research for Samsung UK was carried out online by OnePoll throughout 24/11/2021 to 30/11/2021 amongst a panel resulting in 2,000 UK adults responding.

LONDON, UK – 8 September 2021 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today revealed that the SmartThings Find service, which first launched in October 2020, continues

LONDON, UK – 8 September 2021 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today revealed that the SmartThings Find service, which first launched in October 2020, continues to grow rapidly, now comprising more than 100 million finding nodes. A finding node is any customer or device within the Galaxy community that has opted in to help other Galaxy users find their lost devices.

Powered by SmartThings, the premier technology enabling Connected Living, around 230,000 devices are located through this feature every day.

“We’re incredibly proud of how quickly the SmartThings Find service has grown in less than a year, helping people all over the world locate hundreds of thousands of misplaced devices every day,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “SmartThings Find is yet another example of how Samsung is continuing to create meaningful new experiences that help make life more convenient and less stressful.”

The fast-growing SmartThings Find service enables users to pinpoint registered Galaxy smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, earbuds, PC’s and even S Pen Pro, as well as personal belongings—like keys, wallets and even children’s backpacks—that have a Galaxy SmartTag or SmartTag+ device attached. SmartThings Find, a standout feature of the SmartThings ecosystem, uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate misplaced devices. Even if the device is out of range of your phone, other opted in Galaxy smartphone or tablet users can help find nearby lost devices.

Teg Dosanjh, Director of Connected Services and Technology, Samsung UK and Ireland, said: “We’re delighted to have continued our rapid growth and reached significant scale of the SmartThings Find network so quickly. Having launched SmartThings Find in the UK last autumn, we now have over 1 million users here in the UK, many of whom are new to the SmartThings platform. This really highlights the growing mass appeal and value of smart tech in people’s lives. The ability to find misplaced belongings easily and between family and friends is so relevant for us all, and we’re proud to be able to offer such a powerful and easy solution with SmartThings Find.”

SmartThings Find is continuing to evolve with the addition of the newly launched SmartThings Find Members service, which now enables users to invite friends and family to become members of their SmartThings account, so they can help find misplaced devices together. Users can now invite up to 19 other people to become members and locate up to 200 devices. Once someone has accepted your invitation to SmartThings Find Members, you can pick which specific devices they can see, all based on your consent.

LONDON, UK – April 21, 2021 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd today announced that the company’s recently launched SmartThings Find ecosystem is continuing to

LONDON, UK – April 21, 2021 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd today announced that the company’s recently launched SmartThings Find ecosystem is continuing to grow rapidly, now comprising more than 70 million helper devices across the globe. The service also continues to evolve with enhanced privacy features and voice command updates, which will be available from April 26th. The updates, which include the ability to detect unknown Galaxy SmartTags in your vicinity and the use of Bixby to conveniently find your belongings, enable you to have more control of your connected items from the SmartThings app.

SmartThings Find Becomes One of the Fastest-Growing Location Services

SmartThings Find[1], one of the standout features of the SmartThings ecosystem, enables Galaxy users to locate registered Galaxy smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and earbuds quickly and easily using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)[2] and ultra-wideband (UWB) technologies. It can also help find personal items such as keys, bags and bicycles that have one of Samsung’s small, Bluetooth-powered Galaxy SmartTag devices attached.

SmartThings Find users can help others find lost or misplaced items by opting in via the SmartThings app. Once opted in, any nearby Galaxy device will alert the SmartThings server about a missing device or tag’s location, with the user receiving a notification of its whereabouts.[3] Since its launch in October 2020, more than 70 million devices have been registered globally and with a quick consent, Galaxy users can participate in the SmartThings Find network, making it one of the fastest-growing location services in the world.

SmartThings Find is Enhanced with New Safety and Convenience Features

In addition to its device expansion, people are increasingly using SmartThings Find to keep tabs on their most important possessions. In fact, over half of Galaxy SmartTag users attach it to their house keys or car keys, closely followed by backpacks, wallets and bicycles. Now, beginning next week, Galaxy users will benefit from two new SmartThings Find features that will not only make finding these items more convenient, but will also give them peace of mind when it comes to their safety[4].

First, users will now be able to use Bixby[5] for convenient hands-free, voice-activated Galaxy SmartTag searches. Users can easily and quickly find their belongings which are assigned to an item via Bixby; for instance, if the user asks “Hi Bixby, where’s my bike?” Bixby will immediately find and share its exact location by ringing it.

In addition, the new Unknown Tag Search feature can detect when a Galaxy SmartTag that doesn’t belong to you is moving along with you. With the press of a start button, Unknown Tag Search will scan for unknown SmartTags and provide a list.

As a reminder, all SmartThings Find user data is encrypted and securely protected through a randomized private ID, which changes every 15 minutes, ensuring that the device’s location is not revealed to anyone except its owner.

The SmartThings Ecosystem is Continuing to Evolve

SmartThings Find is just one feature of the ever-expanding, trusted SmartThings ecosystem, which has deepened its capabilities and evolved into an IoT service across Galaxy smartphones and tablets, Samsung TVs and home appliances.

In the UK, SmartThings has expanded beyond popular uses like Smart Home controls or Smart Car features, to analyze users’ electricity usage patterns and recommends more energy-efficient control options for connected devices.

“Samsung is setting precedence with our SmartThings ecosystem, making it one of the fastest-growing location services in the world, and we are only just scratching the surface of what’s possible,” said Teg Dosanjh, Director of Connected Services and Technology at Samsung Electronics. “Continuing to create meaningful services and putting customer experience at the heart of our innovation is what we do best,” he added.
