LONDON, United Kingdom – April 3 2024 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced the launch of its new energy-efficient 75cm Wide Combi Fridge Freezer[1] in Europe. The refrigerator was unveiled at ‘Welcome to BESPOKE AI’, a global launch event held at les Pavillon des Étangs in Paris on April 3. It achieves a high energy rating as a product itself, while its Wi-Fi capabilities allow for even further energy savings with SmartThings Energy[2].

“In response to the reality that energy efficiency is more important to consumers than ever, Samsung is launching a new model for the modern era,” said Moohyung Lee, EVP and Head of the Customer Experience Team of Digital Appliances (DA) Business at Samsung Electronics. “Through our considerable R&D efforts, we’ve been able to provide energy-saving opportunities in addition to the Samsung quality and features that global consumers appreciate. We’re confident that users would take advantages of Samsung’s new refrigerator in their day-to-day lives.”

Notably, the refrigerator has received an energy “A” rating according to EU energy standards, which is for the first time in Samsung’s 75cm Wide Combi Fridge Freezer type. Samsung implements its unique solutions to decrease energy consumption by 55.9% compared to the conventional model[3]. Especially the new AI Inverter Compressor[4] is a key part to achieve an A grade according to EU energy standards.

The new high-efficient AI Inverter Compressor has been redesigned to increase the radius of the rotating parts which enables its inertia to be higher than the conventional compressor[5] by 4.1 times. It means that the compressor can keep the power longer, so it uses less energy while keeping the temperature in the fridge moderate. The compressor also contributes to lowering the noise level by up to 5 times quieter than the conventional model[6] thanks to the new control technology.

Additionally, the 75cm Wide Combi Fridge Freezer supports the energy saving mode in SmartThings Energy[7] which can reduce energy use by up to 15%[8]. The SmartThings AI Energy Mode also allows users to easily check daily, weekly and monthly power consumption, and it even estimates monthly electric bills. If usage exceeds the established estimate, the mode can also proactively save energy[9]. Furthermore, it can optimize the compressor speed and defrost cycle frequency, based on usage and surroundings, ensuring that users can enjoy fresher food items for longer.

Samsung also made the model to be competitive both in capacity and design as well. To enhance the capacity benefits of having a refrigerator with a wider width than common type, Samsung applies SpaceMax technology which has been the heritage of Samsung refrigerator. The fridge makes use of thin walls and efficient insulation to increase the storage volume while maintaining consistent temperatures. The extra storage space does not impact the exterior of the refrigerator, either, as the relatively compact size creates more room in users’ homes.

Apart from its performance and storage capabilities, the refrigerator brings a sleek design that makes it a great aesthetic fit for modern homes. It boasts a fully flat door and a recessed handle that grants the refrigerator a harmonious aesthetic. The Gentle Lighting controls brightness and prevents glare as well.

Availability

The energy-efficient 75cm Wide Combi Fridge Freezer will be available in three capacity variants (538L, 508L and 458L) depending on the region, launching in Europe, CIS, the Middle East, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Canada and Africa.

The refrigerator is expected to be available from April in Europe and other regions sequentially.

LONDON, UK – January 24, 2024 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd: Samsung and British Gas, the UK’s leading supplier of energy and home services, today announce the exciting first step in a long-term venture – aimed at helping customers better manage their energy use and increase the adoption of low carbon heating technologies in homes across Britain.

The collaboration will see British Gas integrate with Samsung’s SmartThings app to help customers optimise their home appliances to use energy when the cost and demand are lower. This is now possible through the integration of SmartThings Energy and British Gas’ PeakSave demand flexibility scheme informing customers (by sending notifications via their smartphone, TV or other compatible devices) of the best times to use household appliances to save money.

The PeakSave scheme includes PeakSave Sundays, running every Sunday until the end of February with half-price electricity from 11am to 4pm for British Gas customers and PeakSave Winter events which encourages customers to move their electricity use out of peak times when there is high demand on Britain’s energy grid.

Scaling up low carbon heating opportunities

The collaboration will also help support customers in their journey to decarbonising their homes by introducing smart technologies in a way that is simple and empowering. From early 2024, British Gas will include Samsung heat pumps in its offering to British households to support the UK’s commitment to reach net zero by 2050.

The venture will see specially trained British Gas surveyors and engineers working with consumers to explain the benefits of heat pumps and then conducting the installations on-site. Samsung will be supporting workforce training as part of their efforts to upskill the heating industry to ensure there are enough installers to service the expected growing demand.

British Gas also offers customers the chance to purchase heat pumps through flexible financing methods. This, combined with the recently increased UK Government Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant of £7,500, creates an attractive package of financing options to help people make the transition more affordable.

Commenting on the announcement, Deborah Honig, Chief Customer Officer at Samsung UK, said: “This collaboration will help educate consumers on the benefits of moving to heat pumps as well as how to manage their overall energy use through our leading home management app, SmartThings.

“It is an exciting moment for the technology and energy sectors to offer innovative ways for customers to manage their energy with less effort. Through SmartThings, we are putting the power directly into the customer’s hands so they can take greater control of how they manage their homes and energy use more efficiently. There are also many more exciting possibilities for us to help customers reap the multiple benefits of a connected home, moving forwards.”

Catherine O’Kelly, Managing Director of British Gas Energy at British Gas commented: “This venture is a big milestone in providing British customers with simple and affordable ways to help save money on their energy bills and cut carbon. This is the first step in our collaboration with Samsung, which will see us combine our strengths and bring more innovative solutions to the market.

“At the core of this venture is a shared commitment to helping customers manage their energy usage and carbon emissions through new technologies which will play an integral role in supporting the UK’s net zero drive.”

Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President at Samsung Global, said: “As one of the UK’s most long-standing, trusted brands, British Gas is the perfect fit for us as an innovative technology business. Together we are now able to harness the power of our SmartThings platform to enable customers to analyse their behaviours and empower them to make changes to optimise their daily routines and energy use.”

Lord Callanan, Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, concluded: “We want more households to benefit from switching to greener energy and I am pleased to see Samsung and British Gas teaming up to help consumers on this journey.

“Since we increased our Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant to £7,500 – applications tripled in the first week, helping more hardworking families to install a heat pump in their homes.”

Notes to Editors:

British Gas Smart Meters can also be linked to SmartThings, enabling customer to monitor energy use throughout their home, as well as Samsung appliances.

Milan, Italy – April 17, 2023 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today showcased its sustainable, connected, and lifestyle-centric design philosophy with the launch of its “Bespoke Home, Bespoke Life” exhibition for Milan Design Week’s Fuorisalone 2023. From April 18–23, visitors are invited to Samsung’s booth to explore how the company’s latest Bespoke home appliances complement consumers’ values while simultaneously empowering their unique lifestyles.

This year’s booth centers on Samsung’s sustainability efforts while also spotlighting several new and exciting design collaborations. The booth includes dynamic exhibits from celebrated lifestyle designers Seungji Mun, known for his eco-conscious, minimalist designs, and Hosuk Jang, known for his space and interior work, and demonstrates how Samsung enhances sustainability throughout the entire product lifecycle and improves consumers’ lifestyles through hyperconnectivity. The exhibition also highlights a new, limited-edition Bespoke panel collaboration with the Milan-based creative studio, TOILETPAPER.

“The Bespoke Life that we are showcasing at Fuorisalone 2023 is the next evolution of the Bespoke vision that extends seamless personalisation to the entire home,” said Ik Soo Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing Team of Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “Living the Bespoke Life allows you to design a home that not only caters to your unique needs but your values as well, empowering you to enjoy a more personalised, connected, and sustainable lifestyle.”

From Production to Recycling, Sustainability for a Better Planet

Samsung’s vision for a sustainable future, one that incorporates sustainability further into everyday life, is clear to visitors throughout the entire “Bespoke Home, Bespoke Life” experience.

The first exhibit, Seungji Mun’s “We Breathe,” places appliances including the Bespoke AI Washer and Dryer and Bespoke BMF[1] Refrigerator into a space composed mainly of recycled materials such as discarded plastic[2] and fishing nets. The exhibit portrays the appliances as “sleeping” while conserving power to showcase SmartThings’ energy-saving technology.

The “Everyday Sustainability” exhibit focuses on Samsung’s efforts to support sustainability throughout the entire product lifecycle. From manufacturing and distribution to usage and disposal, Samsung continues to drive eco-conscious efforts further across every facet of its operations. This includes reducing resource use and carbon emissions[3] during the sourcing stage, developing eco-conscious packaging for distribution, implementing intelligent energy-saving technologies for the usage stage, and making it easier for users to recycle their products once they reach the end of their lifecycle.

A Better, Smarter Lifestyle Through Connectivity

In addition to highlighting innovations that cater to consumers’ desire for greater sustainability, Samsung’s booth is also spotlighting SmartThings’ ability to transform the way consumers interact with their appliances – by fostering seamless experiences and bringing calm to their interconnected world.

The “Connected Experience” exhibit features the types of seamless and intuitive experiences that become possible by combining Bespoke appliances’ hyperconnectivity with SmartThings’ automation. The interactive exhibit demonstrates how Samsung’s updated lineup of SmartThings services – including SmartThings Cooking, Clothing Care, Energy, Air Care, Pet Care, and Home Care – streamlines users’ routines by making everyday tasks more convenient. In particular, it outlines how SmartThings’ energy-saving solutions can help users manage their energy usage and reduce their carbon footprint and energy bills.

SmartThings Energy manages energy production and savings within the home, enabling the true vision of a ‘Net Zero Home’. To this end, Samsung is expanding partnerships with European energy companies, such as ‘SMA Solar Technology’ and ‘Passiv UK’.

London, UK – Wednesday 1st March, Samsung Electronics Air Conditioner Europe (SEACE) will be participating for the first time at ISH 2023 – the leading trade fair for HVAC + Water, where they will offer a comprehensive showcase of heat pump solutions, including their award-winning high temperature heat pump – the EHS Mono HT Quiet, the newest EHS Mono R290 range and other innovative products and digital services.

The theme for ISH this year is ‘Solutions for a sustainable future’. For five days, participants will showcase innovations “that contribute to achieving climate-protection targets and a responsible and efficient use of resources.” With a focus on heating solutions, SEACE will be exhibiting at hall 12.1 B60 and will host plenary sessions on various topics, including technical presentations of some of their key products and services:

EHS Mono HT Quiet – A high temperature, low noise heat pump, the EHS Mono HT Quiet is ideal for the residential renovation market. It combines advanced features and new technologies to achieve hot water temperatures of up to 70°C[1] for domestic heating purposes, and operates at noise levels as low as 35 d(BA)[2], using a 4-step Quiet mode. Its high leaving water temperature make it an especially relevant solution for retrofits, replacing fossil-fuel based heating systems. Additionally, the EHS Mono HT Quiet is easy to install and maintain, and is capable of reliably providing 100% heating performance[3] even in extremely cold weather (temperatures as low as -25°C[4]). This heat pump has recently received the Design Plus powered by ISH award in the category heating/air conditioning, and is also Quiet Mark Certified[5].

EHS Mono R290 – The newest addition to Samsung’s range of premium high temperature monobloc heat pump solutions, the EHS Mono R290 is equipped with Propane (R290), a natural refrigerant with a much lower global warming potential (GWP) compared to refrigerant technologies such as R32. The EHS Mono R290 lineup offers 2 possibilities: One with a pump integrated solution that facilitates easy installation, and another unit that allows for onsite installation of the pump. By introducing this new range, Samsung is prepared to follow future F-gas regulations that are poised to enter into force in a few years.

SmartThings Energy combines connected living and IoT with home energy monitoring, individual device monitoring and energy efficiency. With SmartThings Energy, users are empowered to take control of their household energy usage. Based on user habits, the app recommends ways for users to be more energy efficient, and enables easy monitoring and management of energy usage of a wide range of appliances in your home[6]. Overall, SmartThings Energy integrates functionalities that support “Net Zero Home” installations (for example heat pumps in combination with photovoltaic solutions, electric vehicle chargers and energy efficient solutions).[7]

EHS Cloud Service – a new cloud-based solution designed to empower technical partners, such as installers, offer proactive service and support to their customers. It can provide data and insights[8] that enable the remote optimization of a unit’s performance, along with real-time issue resolution. With the EHS Cloud Service, users benefit from the possibility for remote service escalation, as well as features such as live updates for monitoring system behavior, automated reporting, energy consumption overviews, and map overviews to facilitate field visits.

As Europe’s energy landscape shifts, SEACE continues to share its insights and innovations. By organising and participating in HVAC industry events, SEACE vemphasises the importance of partnership – a message that especially resonates with the SEACE brand campaign, Find your flow.

In the words of Wim Vangeenberghe, President, Samsung Electronics Air Conditioner Europe, “We are proud to be participating in ISH 2023 – the leading fair for the HVAC industry this year. At Samsung, we strive to create industry-leading climate solutions that continually improve the way people live and work. We are really excited to showcase our latest products and service innovations, such as the award winning EHS Mono HT Quiet and the future-ready EHS Mono R290 range, at such a key industry platform.

Frankfurt, Germany – February 23, 2023 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a pioneer for connected device experiences, hosts the first European Samsung Summit, showcasing its 2023 product line-ups in television and audio, Smart Home and digital appliance.

“At Samsung, we innovate to create connected experiences that help our customers to save energy and live more convenient lifestyles. From industry-leading Neo QLED and OLED TVs, to washing machines that use AI to choose the amount of time, detergent and water actually needed, our products are alive and connected through SmartThings,” said Benjamin Braun, Samsung Europe’s Chief Marketing Officer. “At Samsung Summit, we are celebrating the features of our new products, and how they can help customers to live a calm and connected lifestyle.”

Samsung pioneers technology that meets the needs of the modern hybrid world and an ever-growing demand for connected device experiences, with the average European household containing 8-10 connected devices. The new cutting-edge TV and Sound Device innovations offer consumers connected features with their most interactive experience yet, as do its new digital appliances that marry connectivity with improved efficiency and beautiful design.

A smarter ecosystem of entertainment

Built in IoT Hub allows an enhanced connectivity and compatibility on Samsung’s new Neo QLED 4K and 8K TVs, meaning customers no longer need to buy an additional dongle on most of their devices.[1] The 12-bit processing and AI upscaling enables features such as Shape Adaptive Light Control and Real Depth Enhancer Pro[2], combined with Auto HDR remastering, generate a brighter and more lifelike picture, bringing you closer to your content than ever before. Likewise, the new 77-inch S95C OLED model, which also ranges in 55-inch and 65inch, features Quantum Dot technology and Neural Quantum Processors to simultaneously improve brightness and colour representation. Samsung’s new Lifestyle TV products and features elevate the user’s personalised experience, offering a customisable product and viewing experience both indoors with The Frame, The Serif, and Sero, and outdoors, with The Terrace. The Frame’s popular Samsung Art Store layout will be reorganised early this year to provide a more dynamic home page that allows users to preview artworks of any size at a glance, mimicking the browsing experience of visiting real-life art galleries and museums. All of Samsung’s new 2023 TV line-up are connected by the Samsung SmartThings app.

A premium and connected screen experience would only be complete with ultra-immersive audio. Samsung TVs are integrated with Dolby Atmos[3]and Samsung Object Tracking Sound (OTS)[4], allowing movies, sport or gaming sounds to pan to speakers to allow superior atmospheric surround sound. Samsung’s Smart range supports Q-Symphony when paired with a Q-Series or S-Series Samsung Soundbar, allowing powerful audio from both TV and Soundbar speakers to enhance the viewing experience for something truly cinematic. By pairing Samsung TV’s with Samsung Soundbars, like the new HW-Q990C or the innovative Ultra-Slim HW-S801, these devices will offer great entertainment experiences whether looking for the ultimate in cinematic sound or sleek design combined with powerful audio.

Joining this impressive display portfolio are monitors for avid gamers. Samsung announced its new offerings for Odyssey, ViewFinity and Smart Monitor at CES 2023. Delivering unmatched image quality and a range of innovative features for people looking to work, play and live through their monitor display, Samsung Summit will display premium gaming monitors such as the 43” Odyssey Neo G7, Odyssey Ark 55” and Samsung’s latest gaming TV, the OLED 77”. Like Samsung’s 2023 Smart TV range, these all easily connect to Samsung Gaming Hub[5], the all-in-one game streaming platform.

Connected, customisable and smarter digital appliances

Services like SmartThings Energy are setting new standards for product efficiency; Samsung’s newest home appliances helps users reduce energy usage, saving money. SmartThings Energy automatically detects the amount of energy that connected Samsung devices consume, while activating AI Energy Mode, which once users opt in, ensures that their Samsung devices automatically run at optimal energy levels, so they don’t use more than they need to. It can reduce power consumption on compatible appliances by up to 15% for refrigerators[6] and up to 70% for washing machines.[7] In addition to that, Samsung’s Less Microfiber Cycle is a wash cycle that significantly reduces micro plastic release by up to 54%.[8] These latest advancements make it easier for consumers to reduce their impact on the environment.

Combining energy saving potential with powerful AI, seamless connectivity, and customised but premium designs, Samsung’s expanded Bespoke line-up will lead the way for consumers to enjoy more personalised and environmentally conscious lifestyles. Samsung’s 2023 Series 7 Bespoke AI Oven range offers consumers the chance to view their food cooking via a built in webcam that can be viewed on the SmartThings app, making it a fun and easy way to check on your meal. And when it comes to keeping the home clean, Samsung’s Bespoke Jet makes vacuuming a breeze with powerful performance from start to finish.

[1] SmartThings with built-in IOT Hub is supported on all models, but a dongle is required on CU7100, CU8000 & CU8500 models.

During the event, Samsung shared more about its commitment to creating simplified, game-changing customer experiences, including the company’s updated vision for SmartThings as it evolves from a connectivity platform to an enabler of smarter lifestyles. From deeper integration with Bixby to seamless connectivity with Matter-compatible devices, SmartThings is creating a richer, more open world that empowers all users to streamline their connections and their daily lives.

“At Samsung, we continuously innovate our devices, platforms and services to be simpler and more convenient. I am proud to share the next generation of our work, like SmartThings, to further our collaboration with partners and developers,” said Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics. “As technologies become more complex, we will always search for ways to make life easier, more connected, and more flexible, so our consumers can focus on what matters most.”

Connecting Platforms and Devices with Calm Technology

Samsung’s vision of seamless connectivity is inspired by the philosophy of Calm Technology – where devices instantly work together, so consumers can save time on setup and get right into the experience. To realise this vision, Samsung reimagined SmartThings and its connected services and partnerships, including Samsung’s Hub Everywhere, extending its capabilities to the entire smart home with audio and visual data as well as SmartThings Energy, SmartThings Pet and SmartThings Cooking. Samsung also partnered with Philips Hue to integrate Philips Hue Sync right into Galaxy devices so smart home lighting can match with music.

The seamless experience will extend beyond Samsung’s ecosystem through SmartThings’ integration with Matter and Samsung’s membership in the Home Connectivity Alliance. Google and Samsung have worked together to enable users to find and link their devices across platforms by building multi-admin feature on Matter devices. The collaboration will bring more devices and users into the connected home in the future.

Bixby has been integrated more deeply with SmartThings, a tool for developers to build more intelligent voice user interface experiences. As Samsung’s representative voice assistant platform, Bixby has evolved to become the on-device AI solution able to control individual Galaxy devices, as well as the cross-device experience throughout the Samsung ecosystem. With the new Bixby Home Studio, developers can now build differentiated, customised experiences for the SmartThings platform.

As the smart home is becoming more advanced, Samsung is introducing a new security paradigm, enabling Samsung devices to protect each other. Samsung Knox Matrix[1] is a private blockchain based platform that turns eligible Samsung devices into a shield to protect users’ entire device ecosystem – from Galaxy devices to TVs and home appliances. Plus, users can customise personal privacy settings with the new Security and privacy dashboard, which scans for vulnerabilities, recommends security updates, and gives users data management options to keep privacy and security top of mind.

Personalised Services for Better Experiences

In the past year, Samsung TV Plus — Samsung’s free, ad-supported streaming TV and video (FAST) platform available on Samsung Smart TVs[2] and mobile devices— reached 100% growth in viewership[3], and projects three billion hours streamed by the end of the year. To build on this momentum, Samsung TV Plus has expanded its offering by adding partnerships with Lionsgate and Vice Media, providing 8K video on demand. Samsung TV Plus has also gone through a redesign, to reflect its extraordinary variety of content with more than 1,600 channels across 24 countries. Samsung TV Plus is the premium choice for a seamless ad experience, where stream stitching makes ad playback simpler than ever.

After 10 years of service, Samsung’s Tizen operating system (OS) continues to offer best-in-class user experiences. The Samsung Gaming Hub brings better, faster and more convenient access to gaming on Samsung Smart TVs, provided by industry-leading partners, such as Xbox, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Utomik and Amazon Luna. Samsung Gaming Hub bridges expertise in hardware and software to integrate features like AI Upscaling and multitask functions to make gaming on Samsung Smart TVs an immersive, optimized experience.

Tizen OS is also expanding to offer NFTs support with partners like Art Token, laCollection and Nifty Gateway. For B2B customers and developers, Samsung is providing B2B APIs specific to industries and use cases like Syncplay, which allows content to be synchronized and played in multiple signages. Tizen is also introducing SALT, a new content conversion solution to display the highest-quality HDR10+ content on supported TVs.

Your Galaxy, Your Way with One UI 5

By introducing the new One UI 5, Samsung has empowered users to easily customise their device’s look and feel, while enhancing productivity and providing amazing experiences across devices and platforms. One UI 5 brings more personalised experiences with custom-built Modes and Routines, and a Dynamic Lock screen that displays multiple visuals on your phone, your Galaxy Watch and other One UI 5 devices. With the new Bixby Text Call feature, Bixby Voice will answer calls on your behalf and share typed messages with the caller, speaking aloud as if you had answered. One UI 5 also introduces new daily health solutions to help track health and wellness in one place. This includes the Samsung Privileged Health SDK, which enables developers to build apps that leverage the BioActive Sensor on the Galaxy Watch[4].

Future-Forward Investment and Research

Samsung Research is looking beyond today’s horizon to innovate for a better tomorrow, full of relentless innovation and open collaboration. Samsung Research is making its robot arm manipulation code available on GitHub, enabling academics, researchers and developers to examine new ideas in robotic manipulation.

The team at Samsung Research was also inspired by the new wellness features Samsung has introduced, particularly on the Galaxy Watch5. To find new use-cases leveraging these features, Samsung Research is working with universities and healthcare institutions that will explore areas like heart health, stress, blood pressure, lung health and neuroscience. As a result, Samsung is offering a full stack SDK – the Samsung Health Stack – which will jumpstart research into important health fields and spark new development.

Samsung invites developers, creators, partners and more to join in on its commitment to open collaboration and seamless experiences. For more information about the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2022, please visit [developer.samsung.com].

London, UK – January 6, 2022 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced the 2022 sustainability initiatives that will accelerate the development of eco-conscious home appliances. With these measures, Samsung is acting against environmental issues through innovative products and services that can be used in everyday life.

“At CES 2022, we outlined how Samsung will contribute in tackling some of the world’s most pressing environmental and sustainability issues,” said Hyesoon Yang, Executive Vice President and Head of Customer Experience of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “Collaborations to combat microplastic pollution; helping consumers reduce their energy consumption; cutting back on waste by using recycled plastic; and adapting eco-conscious packaging, these are some of the activities we are working on to develop various tangible solutions for environmental problems and a sustainable future.”

Technology to reduce pollution

In a newly announced collaboration, Samsung is coming together with American clothing company Patagonia. As unveiled at CES 2022, this collaboration will promote environmental sustainability by addressing the issue of microplastics and its impact on the ocean environment. Patagonia CPO Vincent Stanley shared his thoughts during Samsung’s keynote speech on the significance of this collaboration and the direction it will take, calling it an example of how companies can “help turn the tide of climate change and restore nature to health”

Patagonia is well-known for its commitment to innovative materials that lessen harm to the planet. The clothing company continues to help Samsung in multiple ways, including product testing, sharing its research, and facilitating an introduction to the NGO Ocean Wise. Samsung has been researching features designed to help overcome the negative impacts of microplastics.

Also, the Bespoke Water Purifier was recently certified by NSF International in the U.S. for its ability to filter out particles that measure as little as 0.5 to 1 micrometer, which include microplastics. This makes Samsung one of the first manufacturers of water purifiers to receive this certification.

Saving more energy and encouraging more eco-conscious energy use

To contribute to better energy usage and to support sustainable living, Samsung has also partnered with Q CELLS to establish a new Zero Energy Home Integration[1] feature for SmartThings Energy. This feature provides production and storage data from solar panels and energy storage systems to help users establish energy self-sufficiency.

SmartThings Energy monitors power usage of consumers’ connected devices and recommends energy saving methods based on their usage patterns. Partnering with Wattbuy in the U.S. and Uswitch in the U.K., SmartThings Energy allows users to switch over to the most cost-efficient energy provider in their area.

Ramping up use of recycled plastic

Samsung will also increase the amount of recycled plastic that is used in its home appliances. To this end, it will expand the use of recycled plastic from the interior components of its appliances to the exterior elements as well.

Samsung is set to raise its goal for recycled plastic utilisation in its home appliances from five percent in 2021 to 30 percent in 2024. This is an increase from 25,000 tons of recycled plastic in 2021 to 158,000 tons in 2024.[2]

In addition, Samsung has also developed a new type of polypropylene recycled plastic for its washing machine tubs. Using discarded polypropylene and polyethylene from items such as used lunchboxes and facial mask straps, the company has created a new type of recycled resin that is more resistant to external shocks.

More sustainable packaging

Samsung is also expanding its use of eco-packaging to encompass a larger lineup of products, including home appliances such as vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, air purifiers and more. This will enable consumers to repurpose the boxes their products came in.

The expansion was first launched in Korea in 2021 and will be introduced to global markets in 2022.

For more information about Samsung’s eco-conscious initiatives, please visit Samsung.com.

[1] Available from the first half of 2022 in the U.K., the second half of 2022 in Germany and 2023 in the U.S.

[2] Based on weight of final components

LONDON, UK – 13 December 2021 – With Christmas less than two weeks away, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd has today released the results of a study which reveals that 30% of people are planning to cut the amount they usually splurge on gifts, food, drink, and parties during the festive season.

Driven by spiralling living costs and higher energy bills – with over half (53%) citing rising gas and electricity costs as a reason to spend less this Christmas – the study found that almost four in 10 adults are worried about household expenditure, with over a third (37%) saying it is ‘getting out of hand’.

And with the cost of feeding and entertaining one guest at Christmas estimated to be £25 on average (excluding gifts and household bills), the financial squeeze is on.

The research has been commissioned by Samsung to lift the lid on the ways in which Brits are making cuts this Christmas, and crucially, what can be done to help – especially as just under a third of people (29%) said they have no idea what steps could be taken in order to reduce or control their energy bills.

Last month, Samsung launched SmartThings Energy, a free service available to download on any Android or iOS smartphone that lets users see exactly how much they’re spending on energy in their home – before receiving their bill. In addition, the platform also enables users to set budgets and reduce energy usage, giving more control.

Commenting on the findings, Teg Dosanjh, Director of Connected Services and Technology, Samsung UK and Ireland said: “Millions of Brits say they’re cutting back on their spending this Christmas due to various pressures, which is a stark warning that more conscious budgeting is likely to become a new way of life in 2022. In addition to the traditional costs around hosting and gifting, rising energy prices and general energy usage is a huge factor of this.

Historically, this is one area we’ve not been able to control, which is emphasised by a third saying they don’t know what steps to take in the right direction – however with free services like SmartThings Energy, we want to show that it is possible for energy data to be more visible, and that your next energy bill doesn’t have to be a nasty surprise.

We hope this level of control will mean people can focus on the things that matter this holiday – spending quality time with loved ones.”

Whilst the obvious costs of hosting a bumper Christmas are known to many households, there are also many invisible costs of hosting, including having the heating on for longer, cooking more than usual or using more electronic devices. Six in 10 (62%) have noticed a spike in their energy bills in the last year, with 14% of people hit with annual bills between £912 and £1,200 for electricity.

Lisa Conway Hughes, Independent financial advisor said: “The nation has a pent-up desire to splurge on Christmas festivities, but household costs are mounting up with rising energy costs, food prices, tax hikes and cuts to credit. Over the last 18 months, one in five people have even missed payments on their energy bills[1]. But, the good news is that Christmas doesn’t need to be excessively trimmed if people get on track with money management and utilise free services like SmartThings Energy to take back control of their bills.”

But it’s not all doom and gloom as we’re a nation of savvy spenders. Over a quarter of Brits (27%) aren’t planning on making any cuts to their Christmas budgets given they’ve been saving for this moment across the year, and just over a fifth of people (22%) confess to saving money by finding items at lower cost.

Teg added: “Christmas shouldn’t be about compromise. We want people to enjoy time with friends and family without the anxiety of hidden costs in the background. With talk of an energy price cap increase in 2022, it’s encouraging to see that 40% of Brits said one of their New Year’s methods for ‘turning things around financially’ would be having better control over household expenditure. We hope services like SmartThings Energy can make a small difference to helping them achieve this goal, and ultimately, taking the right steps to reduce their household energy consumption.”

SmartThings Energy is a world-first service that will allow UK households to manage their energy usage, with any UK provider, directly from their phones and completely free of charge. Housed on Samsung’s SmartThings platform, and powered by smart energy technology company Chameleon Technology, customers can add their smart meter to see how much energy they’re using, understand how much it’s costing them and even set and track budgets all from their phone.

The research for Samsung UK was carried out online by OnePoll throughout 24/11/2021 to 30/11/2021 amongst a panel resulting in 2,000 UK adults responding.
