UK, 3^rd June 2021: Paul Gascoigne’s sublime goal and famous dentist chair celebration against Scotland in Euro 1996 has been ranked the greatest Euros football moment ever according to new research revealed today.

Ahead of the big kick off in Rome on June 11, Samsung KX asked 2,000 football fans to name the most memorable moments in the tournament’s history. Gazza’s unforgettable Wembley celebration during England’s 2-0 win against Scotland took a whopping 42% of the vote to secure first place.

The study was commissioned ahead of the launch of Samsung KX’s new Neo QLED VAR Challenge – a new experience that gives visitors the opportunity to step into the shoes of a referee and review a series of controversial VAR decisions in ultra 8K detail. The experience launches in Coal Drops Yard on Wednesday 9^th June and runs until Sunday 20^th June.

The top voted moments saw current England manager Gareth Southgate’s infamous penalty shoot-out miss that saw his side knocked out of the tournament come in second with 32%. Southgate missed the crucial sixth penalty when England’s semi-final against Germany finished 1-1 and the shoot-out went all the way to sudden death.

The former defender has revealed he could not listen to Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home), recorded by David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and the Lightning Seeds, for 20 years.

In third spot with 28% of the vote was England’s epic 4-1 thrashing of Holland to qualify for the quarterfinals of Euro 96. Football came home in stunning style with the SAS – (Alan) Shearer and (Teddy) Sheringham – each scoring twice as Terry Venables’ team delivered a masterclass.

More penalty shoot-out knockout heartache for England was the pick of 25% of British football fans – Portugal’s goalie Ricardo scoring the winning kick in the Euro 2004 quarter-final. After a 2-2 draw, the shoot-out went the way of Cristiano Ronaldo and co in Lisbon as England exited a major tournament on penalties for the fourth time.

Rank 150/1 outsiders Greece winning Euro 2004 came fifth with 24% of the vote. Greece had never won a match at a major tournament when they arrived in Portugal but overcame the odds sensationally, beating the hosts in the final.

Stuart Pearce exorcising his penalty demons by scoring in the Euro 96 quarter-final shoot-out against Spain was the choice of 21%. Affectionately dubbed ‘Psycho’ by fans, the left back had missed a vital kick in England’s World Cup semi-final shoot-out exit to Germany at Italia 90, but this time stepped up against Spain roaring with relief when he scored.

In seventh came footballing minnows Iceland knocking England out of Euro 2016 in France was also the choice of 21%. Manager Roy Hodgson resigned after the humiliation of losing to a nation with a population of just 330,000 – despite taking the lead through an early Wayne Rooney penalty.

Spain trouncing Italy 4-0 in Kiev, Ukraine, to win Euro 2012 – their third consecutive major tournament win after Euro 2008 and World Cup 2010 – was picked by 18%.

The same number cited Wales, starring Gareth Bale, making the semi-finals of Euro 2016 in France, where they lost to eventual winners Portugal.

And completing the top ten with 16% was Graham Taylor subbing star striker Gary Lineker as England crashed out of Euro 1992 – sparking the famous tabloid headline Swedes 2 Turnips 1.

The survey also revealed that 25 years on from Euro 96, only 18% of Brits know the lyrics to Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home). That is almost as many as the 21% of English fans confident they know the words to the National Anthem.

The other Home Nations of Scotland Wales seem to be far more patriotic. 40% of Welsh fans are confident they know their unofficial national anthem, played before matches, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (Land of My Fathers) and 31% of Scots their equivalent song Flower of Scotland.

UK, 3^rd June 2021: The nation’s football fans are confused by the rules of the game according to new research released today.

As excitement mounts towards one of the biggest footballing events in Europe, a new study reveals most of us need to re-boot our knowledge of the game as over three quarters (85%) admit to being confused by most of the rules.

The poll of 2000 Brits by Samsung KX reveals that the offside rule is considered the most confusing with over half (60%) left scratching their heads when trying to explain it. The contentious handball rule falls in second with over two fifths (46%) admitting they don’t fully understand what counts as a handball.

The survey also reveals that uncertainty with VAR (Video Assistant Referee) means the technology is in third place with 31% of bewildered Brits not understanding when or why it is used. Despite this confusion, three in five (64%) think VAR is a good thing for the game and 41% think it will get better once the technology improves and fans get used to it.

Top 10 Most Confusing Rules in Football

VAR has been used in football for the past few seasons, to correct ‘clear and obvious’ mistakes – but it has proved controversial in its use, with fans left disgruntled with incidents VAR fails to pick up on.

Seven in ten fans (70%) wrongly believe that VAR rather than goal-line technology is used to check that the ball has crossed the line for a goal. Similarly, 44% do not know that VAR’s can come into play for more than just checking penalties and bad tackles.

To help puzzled Brits get to grips with the rules of the game, ex-England footballer and pundit Karen Carney has teamed up with Samsung KX to launch The Rules of Football, a content series that demystifies and explains the rules that leave Brits most confused, shot entirely in 8K using the Samsung Galaxy S21.

The films feature Karen explaining the Top 10 trickiest rules of the game including how red and yellow cards are used, when penalties are retaken and the offside rule.

Alongside the confusion over rules, the poll also found that an optimistic 85% believe England can win this summer’s tournament.
