With eight years\u2019 experience at Samsung \u2013 four in Korea, and four in the United States \u2013 Nana was a natural choice to kick off \u2018Coffee Chat.\u2019 Having spent time first in Dallas, he now splits his time between Mountain View and Ridgefield Park, and was most recently named #1 in Business Insider Magazine\u2019s list of Game Changers in the Payments Industry in recognition of his pioneering contributions to the way Samsung is offering more value and choices for its consumers through <a href=\"http:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/2016\/11\/14\/samsung-pay-now-offers-even-more-rewarding-digital-wallet-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Samsung Rewards.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Moderated by Dan Tuckman, Product Marketing Manager, Services and New Business Division, the session was an interactive Q&amp;A discussion.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dan:<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0 <\/em>Nana, You\u2019ve had a very successful career at Samsung so far \u2013 can you share with us some of the accomplishments you are most proud of?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Nana:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 When I think about my time at Samsung, I think I am most proud of the calculated risks I\u2019ve taken \u2013 and been empowered to take \u2013 on behalf of the business.\u00a0\u00a0 I believe one of the greatest things about Samsung is that we have so many white space opportunities, and as Samsung employees we are encouraged to write our own script and try new things.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14170004\/Samsung-Pay-Key_Viusal_v2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10851 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14170004\/Samsung-Pay-Key_Viusal_v2-950x834.jpg\" alt=\"samsung pay samsung rewards\" width=\"730\" height=\"641\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14170004\/Samsung-Pay-Key_Viusal_v2-950x834.jpg 950w, https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14170004\/Samsung-Pay-Key_Viusal_v2-600x527.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Samsung Rewards program we launched 6 months ago is an example of this white space opportunity focused on disruptive innovation.\u00a0\u00a0 In fact, this is the first service offering built from the ground up with each and every part of the Samsung Rewards program having been conceived and ideated by the Service and New Business Team. It felt good to take a chance on building a new program like this, just the way we wanted it to be, and see it come to fruition\u2026but we\u2019re not done!\u00a0 We\u2019ve designed the Samsung Rewards program to be ever-evolving and expanding, so our opportunities in this space are virtually limitless!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dan:\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong>I would agree \u2013 we are definitely given lots of opportunity to try new things \u2013 and when it pays off it\u2019s incredibly rewarding.\u00a0 But trying new things can be stressful, and sometimes, the things you try don\u2019t work out as planned.\u00a0 What\u2019s your advice for dealing with the stress when it doesn\u2019t go as smoothly as intended?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Nana: <\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Very true &#8211; the highs can be incredibly high when everything is successful and you see your vision become reality.\u00a0\u00a0 And the flip side is also as true, when we don\u2019t hit it out of the ballpark frustrations can mount.\u00a0 My advice when you\u2019re struggling, or feeling frustrated is to keep in mind that \u201c<strong><em>Nothing comes from losing it<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 We all get overwhelmed at times, no matter who you are \u2013 set-backs can happen. The learning is how we react in those moments, and where you decide to go from there ultimately determines your success.<\/p>\n<p>For me, I find practicing Meditation and Yoga to be a huge help to allowing me to keep things in perspective \u2013 finding distance from a problem so I can come back and tackle it with a clear head.\u00a0 But really, it\u2019s about finding your own way to be rational, when the knee jerk reaction is tempting you to act impulsively.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<blockquote>\n<h4><em><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Take Risks! Don\u2019t be afraid to chart your own course, especially when you have the conviction that it is the right thing to do for the busines<\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">s.<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #808080;\">&#8211; Nana Murugesan<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><em>Dan:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 What is your greatest motivator?\u00a0 What gets you out of bed every day?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Nana:<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0 <\/em>This might sound a bit quaint, but the amazing people in my team who I work with every day really drive me to do my best.\u00a0\u00a0 The breadth and depth of talent on my team is truly motivating and their level of autonomy, ownership and creativity is incredible. My team inspires me to do better, work harder, and push further each and every day.\u00a0 And, the more I get to know people within the larger organization \u2013 not just my Services and New Business team \u2013 I realize we have an amazing pool of talent within Samsung at large. Each and every team has brilliant minds doing great things.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dan:<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0 <\/em>\u00a0What are your top 3 tips for success?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Nana:<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em>\u00a0My personal recipe for success comes in three parts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Take Risks!<\/strong> &#8211; \u00a0Don\u2019t be afraid to chart your own course, especially when you have the conviction that it is the right thing to do for the business, and look for the white space in any opportunity.\u00a0 We already touched upon this, but Samsung is a terrific place for employees who are willing to take calculated risks \u2013 and to draw on their own blank canvas. At the end of the day Samsung is a supportive place where you should feel empowered to take risks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Show Passion<\/strong> &#8211; Even if you don\u2019t have ALL the details locked in perfectly, be passionate in everything you do. Be relentless and be a trail blazer!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Build Relationships<\/strong> &#8211; One of the things that has helped me the most at Samsung is that I have built relationships with people all across the company \u2013 not only within my direct teams. Get to know people in a genuine, authentic way and understand what they do, and foster relationships. Pay close attention and offer to help whenever someone needs it. Informal links and connections with people throughout the organization are key at Samsung, and will make you better at your job, give you access to resources from places you didn\u2019t have access to before, and simply make your time at work even more enjoyable. Sessions like this \u2018Coffee Chat\u2019 is a great start.<a href=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/14154243\/20170517_152218-e1497069669626.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13791 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/14154243\/20170517_152218-e1497069669626-950x506.jpg\" alt=\"Nana Murugesan, Samsung Rewards, Samsung Pay\" width=\"730\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/14154243\/20170517_152218-e1497069669626-950x506.jpg 950w, https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/14154243\/20170517_152218-e1497069669626-600x319.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Dan:\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>OK, let\u2019s keep on that track of getting to know people within the organization \u2013 for people who aren\u2019t familiar with our team, can you describe what the Services and New Business team does exactly?<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Nana<\/strong><\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0So, the simplest way to describe it is to think about it is that there are two engines driving Samsung\u2019s business now and for the future.\u00a0 The first one is our core business:\u00a0<strong>products\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Samsung makes the best products available anywhere, bar none. The second one is our new business:\u00a0<strong>services\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 and that\u2019s where our Services and New Business team comes in. And when I talk about \u201cservices\u201d I mean the apps and platforms that run across those amazing products. Our team is responsible for combining products with software\/services and growing them into new businesses. We are an inter-disciplinary growth team with members who focus on strategy, investment, product marketing and business operations.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the services managed by our Services and New Business team include <a href=\"http:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/bixby-voice-capabilities-us-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bixby<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/tag\/samsung-pay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Samsung Pay<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/samsung-health-fact-sheet-unpacked-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Samsung Health<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/fact-sheet-samsung-connect-unpacked-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Samsung Connect<\/a>, and<a href=\"http:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/2016\/11\/14\/samsung-pay-now-offers-even-more-rewarding-digital-wallet-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Samsung Rewards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dan:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Can you talk a little more about why Samsung is investing so much time, energy and resources into \u201cServices?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Nana: <\/em><\/strong> That\u2019s a really good question. Samsung\u2019s investment in services is really about looking to the future and identifying how we can continue to bring our customers what they need before they know they even need it! People <em>buy<\/em> Samsung products (the physical devices \u2013 phones, wearables, computers, tablets, appliances, etc.) but they <em>interact<\/em> with its interfaces, be it touch screens, voice commands, visual search on camera, sensors, scanners, or transmitters. What people do on those interfaces is where we learn from our customers\u2013 how they use them, for what, when, and how \u2013 is all valuable to deliver new and meaningful benefits that are also personalized and contextual.
