{"id":15449,"date":"2017-09-15T14:47:47","date_gmt":"2017-09-15T18:47:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/?p=15449"},"modified":"2019-06-18T23:08:45","modified_gmt":"2019-06-19T03:08:45","slug":"rural-farm-kid-realizing-dream-come-true","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/rural-farm-kid-realizing-dream-come-true\/","title":{"rendered":"From Rural Farm Kid to Realizing a Dream Come True"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a child growing up in a small farming community in South Korea, <strong>Myunghwan \u201cDaniel\u201d Ryu<\/strong> never owned a cell phone, so it\u2019s almost ironic that today he works for one of the world\u2019s largest cell phone manufacturers, Samsung, and is living a childhood dream.<\/p>\n<p>For kids in South Korea, working for Samsung when they grow up is a common dream, Ryu said, and he was no exception. He remembers spending many days of his youth looking longingly toward the large factory in his town, emblazoned with the words \u201cSamsung Jeonja,\u201d which translates to \u201cSamsung Electronics.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15451\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/14150604\/DanielPresenting2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15451\" class=\"wp-image-15451 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/14150604\/DanielPresenting2-950x633.jpg\" alt=\"Ryu presenting to his fellow interns and Samsung colleagues during his summer internship.\" width=\"730\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/14150604\/DanielPresenting2-950x633.jpg 950w, https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/14150604\/DanielPresenting2-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15451\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ryu presenting to his fellow interns and Samsung colleagues during his summer internship.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On June 2, 2017, Ryu began an internship at Samsung Electronics America, in the customer care department, but the journey he experienced to earn one of 60 coveted internship spots was far from easy.<\/p>\n<p>As a young child, Ryu helped his grandparents farm rice, grapes and pears and also helped his parents cultivate and sell their honey. His family experienced the same financial difficulties that many farmers do today, which took a toll on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn high school, I was the only student in class who didn\u2019t have a cell phone because we couldn\u2019t pay the monthly service bill,\u201d said Ryu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was a teenager, my church pastor asked me what my dream was and I responded, \u2018I want to work at Samsung Electronics,\u2019\u201d Ryu recalled proudly. (Photo courtesy of Daniel Ryu)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Shortly thereafter, Ryu\u2019s family caught a break: Samsung had decided to allow local farmers to sell their produce in the factory\u2019s parking lot. This was really meaningful to me because when I was younger I received so much from Samsung, and now I get to give it back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Upon graduating from Baruch College this December, Ryu plans to embark on a career in a high-demand area for technology professionals and may even find himself at Samsung once again. \u201cI dream of being a professional data analyst because I\u2019m very interested in data science.
