Seattle, Washington, January 16, 2015<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2013<\/span><\/span>\u00a0In order to bridge the growing skills gap in science,<\/span>technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), Samsung and Year Up Puget Sound announced today\u00a0<\/span>the launch of an immersive training program for local urban young adults. The program will equip them\u00a0<\/span>with the skills and technology to attain careers in software engineering and website development.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>At Samsung, we are dedicated to providing the essential tools, resources and access to our technology\u00a0<\/span>to encourage, inspire and enhance the communities we serve,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Gregory Lee, President and CEO of\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Samsung Electronics North America<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWith the growing need to fi<\/span>ll STEM-related jobs with qualified\u00a0<\/span>professionals, we believe our joined efforts with Year Up will help address this critical issue<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Beginning in March 2015, students at the STEM-focused Learning Community at Year Up Puget Sound\u00a0<\/span>will gain software coding skills through an immersive, customized curriculum and computer programming\u00a0<\/span>language courses. Students will also receive Samsung laptops to hone their coding skills, as well as a <\/span>year-long subscription to GitHub. Year Up will provide students with technical and professional skills\u00a0<\/span>training, and a six-month internship at a local corporate partner firm.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEmployers in Puget Sound and across the country are in need of diverse, motivated STEM talent,\u201d said\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Lisa Chin, Executive Director of Year Up Puget Sound<\/strong>. \u201cThis pilot will leverage Samsung\u2019s understanding\u00a0<\/span>of businesses\u2019 technical<\/span>-talent needs and our innovative, scalable solution to workforce development\u00a0<\/span>challenges<\/span>. We\u2019re excited about expanding our curriculum to\u00a0<\/span>provide our students with access to careers\u00a0<\/span>in the quickly-<\/span>growing fields of software engineering and web development.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, by 2018, 71 percent of new STEM jobs will be in\u00a0<\/span>computing. By 2022, there will be more than 200,000 open jobs for application software developers, while\u00a0<\/span>employment for software developers is projected to grow by 22 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Year Up is a national nonprofit organization that provides urban young adults with a career-focused\u00a0<\/span>education in high-demand professional industries. Founded in March 2011, Year Up Puget Sound\u00a0<\/span>instructs more than 160 young adults each year, with 85 percent of graduates employed and\/or attending\u00a0<\/span>college full-time within four months of completing the program.<\/span><\/p>\n
