{"id":24179,"date":"2018-11-16T11:11:15","date_gmt":"2018-11-16T16:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/?p=24179"},"modified":"2023-06-20T13:29:56","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T17:29:56","slug":"solve-tomorrow-alumni-take-center-stage-sdc-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/solve-tomorrow-alumni-take-center-stage-sdc-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Solve for Tomorrow Alumni Take Center Stage at SDC 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Samsung <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/tag\/solve-for-tomorrow-sft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Solve for Tomorrow<\/a><\/strong> national finalists and winners from the 2017-2018 season of the nationwide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) competition attended <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/sdc-2018-samsung-mobile-ux-one-ui-infinity-flex-display-bixby-smartthings-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Samsung Developer Conference 2018<\/a> to meet some of the nation\u2019s best developers, learn about Samsung\u2019s new technological innovations, and personally present their projects to DJ Koh, President and CEO of IT &amp; Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics.<\/p>\n<p>The six students and their teachers were flown to San Francisco from across the country to attend the event and share their ideas and projects that tackle some of America\u2019s toughest problems.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_24182\" style=\"width: 829px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/14104023\/SFT.SDC2_.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24182\" class=\"wp-image-24182 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/14104023\/SFT.SDC2_.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"819\" height=\"545\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/14104023\/SFT.SDC2_.png 819w, https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/14104023\/SFT.SDC2_-600x399.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-24182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students and teachers from Cavallini Middle School, Santiago High School and Kent Career Tech Center gather at SDC ahead of the opening keynote.<\/p><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Samsung Developer Conference was the first time that many of these students have seen each other since the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/samsung-solve-for-tomorrow-contest-2018-final-event-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">final pitch day for the competition in New York City last April<\/a>, where they presented their ideas in front of an expert panel of judges, competing for a chance to win a share of the $2 million in Samsung technology for their schools.*When they were all together again in the entrance hall of the Samsung Developer Conference, wearing their conference badges and chatting with familiar faces, the students and teachers reflected on the competition and the importance of STEM education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to study STEM. It\u2019s the future of our entire nation. Technology is really what pushes us to evolve,\u201d <strong>said Harshil P., a national finalist from California who is now attending his freshman year at UC San Diego<\/strong>. \u201cSamsung Solve for Tomorrow influenced my decision to study aerospace engineering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Harvey, who guided his Cavallini Middle School students to one of the competition\u2019s top three spots <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/student-inventors-tackle-concussions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with their app and accelerometer prototype aimed at reducing the number of concussions that go undetected in school sports<\/a>, said participating in Samsung Solve for Tomorrow gave his students an outlet to use their creative spirit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Solve for Tomorrow contest is the perfect example of getting kids to work through challenges and come up with new ideas for how to solve a problem that means something to them,\u201d <strong>said Harvey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_24185\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/14104023\/MG_9015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24185\" class=\"wp-image-24185 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/14104023\/MG_9015-950x633.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"730\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/14104023\/MG_9015-950x633.jpg 950w, https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/14104023\/MG_9015-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-24185\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From L to R: Ian L., Jake C. and Jonathan Harvey demo their \u201cHead Safe\u201d concussion detection system developed for the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2017-18 contest year that aims to reduce the number of concussions that go undetected.<\/p><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>During the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/MguV4zQc3L0?t=491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">conference\u2019s opening keynote speech<\/a>, Samsung CEO DJ Koh kicked off the event with a special moment where he congratulated the students in front of thousands of developers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m especially excited to welcome a special group of young innovators. They are the winners of Samsung Solve for Tomorrow, our annual STEM competition for students. I love what they have created \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/Kent-career-mi-2018sft-national-finalist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a virtual reality learning space for children with autism<\/a>, sensors to identify sports concussions, and an <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/santiago-ca-sft-2018-top-10-finalist-school-physics-teachers-byline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">app-based system to fight wildfires and save lives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s all part of Samsung\u2019s commitment to helping young people learn the skills they will need to succeed in a technology-driven future. Koh and other Samsung executives visited the students while they presented their projects, asking questions and trying out the students\u2019 prototypes themselves.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cMe trying to remember all my Korean words was my way in \u2013 I was just really excited to meet him and it was really cool to see that he was open to having a conversation with me,\u201d <strong>said Lauren S., a Samsung Solve for Tomorrow national finalist<\/strong> from Santiago High School in California who is now attending her freshman year at UC San Diego and plans to study international business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition I\u2019ve definitely had a lot more awareness of what I want to do and what my passions are.
