The diverse portfolio of her career-making installations, fully immersing viewers within the mirror-lined spaces, are currently in the spotlight in a retrospective exhibition, at the Smithsonian\u2019s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Gardens in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: -.05pt\">Following shows in Los Angeles and New York, the exhibition\u200a\u2014\u200a<em>Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors\u200a\u2014\u200a<\/em>has drawn the largest crowds the Hirshhorn Museum has ever seen since its Washington debut in February. This is the first institutional exhibition to explore the evolution of the celebrated Japanese artist\u2019s immersive installations, and with nearly 80,000 having already walked through its doors, hundreds are still eagerly waiting to get in before the exhibit moves on to Seattle in June.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-24674\" src=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/21171717\/LifeArt2-600x300.png\" alt=\"museum smithsonian mugs color dots\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/14103910\/LifeArt2-600x300.png 600w, https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/14103910\/LifeArt2.png 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: -.05pt\">However, not\u00a0<em>all\u00a0<\/em>of the 80,000 visitors to the\u00a0<em>Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors<\/em>are able to physically step into these virtual landscapes. The Infinity Room series of cube-like rooms are only accessible by a raised platform, and only viewable within a confined space. These structural features make it difficult, or impossible, for exhibition visitors with mobility limitations to experience the iconic rooms first-hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: -.05pt\">As Zach Baldwin from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aapd.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Association for People with Disabilities<\/a>(AAPD) has reinforced, \u201cpeople with disabilities should be afforded the same opportunity to experience culture and the arts\u200a\u2014\u200ain all of its different forms\u200a\u2014\u200aas their non-disabled family members and friends.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: -.05pt\">With the goal of making the experience available to all museum visitors, the Hirshhorn team was faced with the unique and unprecedented challenge of both translating the experience for those with physical restrictions while also keeping the integrity of these physical, experiential art pieces, whose very specifications are viewed as art by Kusama.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: -.05pt\">The solution? Turning this virtual space into virtual reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-24675\" src=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/21171820\/LifeArt3-600x300.png\" alt=\"museum Smithsonian infinity mirror light\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/14103910\/LifeArt3-600x300.png 600w, https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/14103910\/LifeArt3.png 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;background: white\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: -.05pt\">Each reflection, simulating \u201cinfinity,\u201d is individually built by hand with computer graphics using software that is most commonly used for video games. The VR application\u2019s animation of the artwork allows those with mobility challenges to immerse themselves in three of Kusama\u2019s dazzling and infinitely expansive and otherworldly environments, including\u00a0<em>Phalli\u2019s Field<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;background: white\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: -.05pt\">With this solution in hand, our collaboration with the Hirshhorn to supply the Infinity Mirrors exhibit with Samsung Gear VR kits and accompanying Galaxy S7 phones was a natural fit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;background: white\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: -.05pt\">While VR has become a new medium for art, it has also proven to be a tool for empathy, inclusiveness, and education.
