{"id":25892,"date":"2019-02-21T09:44:07","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T14:44:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/?p=25892"},"modified":"2019-11-01T15:21:36","modified_gmt":"2019-11-01T19:21:36","slug":"samsung-joins-o-ran-alliance-advance-open-innovation-networking-technologies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/samsung-joins-o-ran-alliance-advance-open-innovation-networking-technologies\/","title":{"rendered":"Samsung Joins O-RAN Alliance to Advance Open Innovation  in Networking Technologies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"press-release-open\">Ridgefield Park, NJ \u2013 February 21, 2019 \u2013<\/span> <strong>Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.<\/strong> today announced that it has entered the O-RAN Alliance, joining global carriers and networking technology suppliers in their commitment to design and implement a more open network infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2018, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.o-ran.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">O-RAN Alliance<\/a> is an industry-wide, carrier-led effort to integrate greater intelligence into the radio access networks of next-generation wireless systems. The alliance encourages companies to transition to cloud-based, virtual systems powered by multi-vendor networks and open interfaces.<\/p>\n<p>An open approach enables the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to help operators better manage their networks through automation, as they evolve to 5G. This can accelerate delivery of next-generation 5G capabilities to consumers and businesses \u2013 including AR\/VR, autonomous technologies and high-quality video streaming. Using best-in-class technologies on open networks can enhance feature performance by intelligently allocating bandwidth to the applications that need it most at a given moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamsung is an established pioneer in networking technology, from 2G to 4G LTE and 5G NR\u2014and through this evolution, we\u2019ve been committed to fostering innovation through openness,\u201d said <strong>Juha Lappalainen, Vice President, Networks Division, Samsung Electronics America.<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019re excited to partner with carriers and suppliers in the O-RAN Alliance to help design the standards that will optimize today\u2019s networks to meet increasing demands of next-generation users.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samsung plans to take an active role in O-RAN\u2019S work, and will join relevant working groups within O-RAN to spearhead initiatives that include a focus on innovation through network virtualization and open standards development.
