{"id":33318,"date":"2019-08-02T16:01:24","date_gmt":"2019-08-02T20:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/?p=33318"},"modified":"2021-08-05T21:35:01","modified_gmt":"2021-08-06T01:35:01","slug":"korean-american-professional-network-awarded-samsung-community-impact-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/korean-american-professional-network-awarded-samsung-community-impact-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Korean American Professional Network Awarded Samsung Community Impact Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Korean Americans may be well-represented at the top U.S. colleges and universities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/reports\/race-and-ethnicity\/2017\/home.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, but research reported in the <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/05\/asian-americans-are-the-least-likely-group-in-the-u-s-to-be-promoted-to-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harvard Business Review<\/a> shows they can also bump up against a <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/12\/why-arent-there-more-asian-americans-in-leadership-positions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">glass ceiling<\/a> in the world of business. That\u2019s why Peter Chi, information security manager for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Samsung Electronics America<\/a><\/strong> and a member of the non-profit <a href=\"https:\/\/kapn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Korean American Professional Network (KAPN)<\/a> wanted to go the extra mile in his support for the organization by nominating it for a Samsung <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/program-empowers-employees-give-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Community Impact Grant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The tech company\u2019s employee-driven philanthropic program, which celebrated its one-year anniversary this summer, awards grants of up to $5,000 to the non-profit organizations most important to the employees who nominate them.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33323\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33323\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-33323\" src=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/31174023\/mentor_program-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/31174023\/mentor_program-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/31174023\/mentor_program-950x713.jpg 950w, https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/31174023\/mentor_program.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-33323\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Korean American Professional Network former President Heon Jeong, left, presents the non-profit\u2019s mentoring program certificate to graduate Sunny Choi, right. Photo credit: Chase Park<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cGrants like Samsung\u2019s make it possible for KAPN to provide professional development for members and mentorship to the next generation of Korean Americans,\u201d <strong>Chi said<\/strong>. He added that it\u2019s all the more meaningful to him that Samsung is a Korean company that\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deeply rooted in the U.S.<\/a>, supporting and celebrating the communities it\u2019s part of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m honored to help build a partnership between Samsung and KAPN, two organizations that I am proud to be associated with,\u201d <strong>Chi continued<\/strong>. \u201cI\u2019m grateful that together, we can help highlight the emergence of Koreans in business and society as we \u2013 and all Asian Americans \u2013 work to break organizational bias and achieve the highest levels of management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chase Park, president of KAPN, said his organization helps build community among Asian Americans, while also offering leadership and learning opportunities to help them achieve career success.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33321\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33321\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-33321\" src=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/31174006\/KAPN_Group_photo-600x397.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"449\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-33321\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Proud mentors and mentees: Korean American Professional Network members and the young professionals they\u2019re mentoring. Photo courtesy of KAPN.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBy developing the kind of bonds that make a network more of a collective, a family, the Korean American Professional Network strives to break barriers to leadership,\u201d <strong> said Park<\/strong>. \u201cWe want to empower the next generation to achieve even more and open doors that we may only have sneaked a peek through. Photo credit: Chase Park<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Chi explained that with Samsung\u2019s $1,000 grant to KAPN in December 2018, the organization completed its college student mentoring program, a six-month curriculum that included workshops on resume building and mock interviewing and matched students with one-on-one professional mentors for industry-specific insights and guidance.<\/p>\n<p>Even more rewarding for the Samsung employees who nominate an organization for the Community Impact Grant is that every month, the awards are decided by their peers.
