A nationwide survey of K-12 teachers revealed that while schools are taking steps to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">bridge the digital divide by putting more technology into classrooms, more action must be taken to ensure\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">that teachers know how to integrate it into their lessons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tx f181\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"tx\">With the increasing popularity of Chromebooks, tablets, interactive whiteboards and apps in classrooms\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">today,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f181\">it\u2019s evident that<\/span><span class=\"tx\">\u00a0technology is a critical tool\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f181\">for today\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">learners<\/span><span class=\"tx f181\">,\u201d said<strong> Ted Brodheim,\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong><span class=\"tx\">vice president\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">of Vertical Business at\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"tx f181\"><strong>Samsung Electronics<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>America<\/strong>\u00a0\u201c<\/span><span class=\"tx\">However, our new research highlights that\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">teachers are not yet receiving full support to harness the power of technology and truly transform \u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">classroom learning into a 21<\/span><span class=\"tx\">st<\/span><span class=\"tx\">\u00a0century experience<\/span><span class=\"tx f181\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tx f181\">\u201cAs the former CIO of the New York City Department of Education, I\u2019ve se<\/span><span class=\"tx\">en the positive impact\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">technology can have on student outcomes and the importance of developing educators to use it\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f181\">effectively,\u201d Brodheim added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tx\">According to the survey,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f10\"><strong>81 percent<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">of teachers agree that technology in the classroom enables students\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">to get more hands-on experience during lessons. However, teachers overwhelmingly feel they need help\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">to use technology in a valuable way:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div class=\"tb f12\"><span class=\"tx f10\"><strong>91 percent of teachers<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">believe that up-to-date training on using technology in the classroom is important to achieve success in the classroom<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"tb f12\"><span class=\"tx f10\"><strong>37 percent<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">of teachers say\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f181\">that they would \u201clove\u201d to use technology in the classroom, but they <\/span><span class=\"tx\">simply do not know how<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"tx\">Teachers over the age of 43 are less confident about using technology in the classroom\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">compared to younger teachers, with\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f10\"><strong>63 percent<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">agreeing they need more technology training to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f181\">support their students\u2019 needs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"tx\">Not only do teachers agree that professional development on classroom technology is vital, but they also\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">have strong opinions about how it should be delivered:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"tx f10\"><strong>76 percent<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">say they would like a professional development day dedicated to technology during\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">the school year when students would not be present<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span class=\"tx f10\">80 percent<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"tx\">\u00a0say it would be helpful to download pre-existing lesson plans that enhance science,<\/span><span class=\"tx\">technology, engineering and math skills in a way that easily integrates technology<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span class=\"tx f10\">More than one third<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"tx\">\u00a0of teachers feel that training on technology fundamentals would be most\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">helpful<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"tx\">The survey further illustrates that teachers also need a support system to successfully use technology in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">their lesson plans:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div class=\"tb f12\"><strong><span class=\"tx f10\">One in three teachers<\/span><span class=\"tx\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f10\">are not satisfied<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"tx\">\u00a0with the support they receive from their schools in integrating technology into their classrooms (32 percent)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><span class=\"tx f10\">30 percent<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"tx\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>each are not satisfied with the quality of or access to technology in their schools<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"tx f10\"><strong>70 percent<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">say they do not have a technology center to provide them with additional resources<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"tx f181\">\u201cAt Samsung, not only are we committed to developing classroom<\/span><span class=\"tx\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"tx f181\">ready technology, but we\u2019re also\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">dedicated to providing schools and teachers with services and resources to improve learning outcomes<\/span><span class=\"tx f181\">,\u201d <\/span><span class=\"tx f181\">Brodheim said. \u201cThis<\/span><span class=\"tx\">\u00a0is why we plan to introduce a professional development program for teachers and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">school districts. The respondents were selected\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f17\">using random probability address-based sampling. The survey took 21 minutes on average to administer.<\/span><span class=\"tx f17\">Final data were weighted by age, gender, race\/ethnicity, level of completed education, and type of school<\/span><span class=\"tx f17\">(public school teachers vs. private\/charter school teachers) according to the 2012 NCES data. \u00a0Age,<\/span><span class=\"tx f17\">gender, and race\/ethnicity were also weighted within school type (public vs. private\/charter).
