Judging the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/ten-schools-named-national-finalists-samsung-solve-for-tomorrow-stem-competition-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">final round<\/a> of the 13<sup>th<\/sup> annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/solvefortomorrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Samsung Solve for Tomorrow<\/a> competition, it was difficult for him to contain his excitement about <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/samsung-solve-for-tomorrow-stem-students-national-winners-2023-we-got-this\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what these kids were working on<\/a> and how innovative they were.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about common themes <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/ten-schools-named-national-finalists-samsung-solve-for-tomorrow-stem-competition-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">among the ten projects<\/a> that were being pitched by the competition\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/ten-schools-named-national-finalists-samsung-solve-for-tomorrow-stem-competition-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Finalists<\/a>, Harry replied that there was an overarching theme \u2013 \u201cFind a need, Fill a need.\u201d These teams were identifying problems and issues that were of concern to them and their communities and, in that process, they typically developed a solution that had global implications.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embedded product-module\">\n\t\t<a id=\"product-module-0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/solvefortomorrow\/\" title=\"Solve for Tomorrow\" class=\"snr-article_product-image\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/06102359\/solve-for-tomorrownewsroom-product-module-1.png\" alt=\"Solve for Tomorrow\">\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>A look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=olc2RPnq6Hk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">final student pitches<\/a> shows several clear trends to the Computer Science Teacher at Green Street Academy in Baltimore and past three-time <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/tag\/solve-for-tomorrow-sft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Samsung Solve for Tomorrow<\/a> State Winner and one-time National Finalist:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Community mental health challenges<\/strong> were top of mind for the two <strong>middle school teams <\/strong>that made it to the finals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate\/environment induced dangers<\/strong> sparked the greatest number of proposals from these highly motivated young people.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Concern for distressed community members<\/strong> ran throughout the proposals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He was also asked if he thinks competition is the right approach for a learning environment. \u201cIn many ways, competition drives innovation \u2013 it helps you learn how to marshal finite resources; it forces you to prioritize. The STEM competitions my classes enter don\u2019t really have any losers \u2013 there are winners and learners. The luxury of failing isn\u2019t equally shared across American education. Some school districts can afford to fail and fail again before getting things \u2018right.\u2019 Elsewhere, teachers have to make do with what\u2019s on hand, or that they can afford to supplement out of their own pockets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why Harry believes programs like <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/samsung-solve-for-tomorrow-survey-stem-education-program-rise-above-culture-war-issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solve for Tomorrow<\/a> are so important. \u201cThey provide a very real supplement to the limited resources available for STEM programs in many districts. Even those that didn\u2019t achieve top prizes learned that they \u2013 their ideas, their skills, and their concerns for the communities \u2013 are valued in the world outside their
