{"id":63485,"date":"2023-09-20T09:00:09","date_gmt":"2023-09-20T13:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/?p=63485"},"modified":"2024-03-06T10:43:37","modified_gmt":"2024-03-06T15:43:37","slug":"solve-for-tomorrow-oped-the-future-of-stem-education-is-social-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/solve-for-tomorrow-oped-future-of-stem-education-social-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"Solve for Tomorrow OpEd: The Future of STEM Education is Social Impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a commentary for the education-focused media outlet <strong>Education Week<\/strong>, AP Biology teacher <strong>Dr. Kirstin Milks<\/strong>, who guided her <strong>Bloomington High School South<\/strong> student team to a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/samsung-solve-for-tomorrow-stem-students-national-winners-2023-we-got-this\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustainability Innovation Award win<\/a> in the 2022-2023 national <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/solvefortomorrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Samsung Solve for Tomorrow<\/strong><\/a> STEM competition, writes that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/explore\/brand\/future-climate-community-tech-leaders-reveal-sustainable-creations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STEM-based social impact projects<\/a> fuel growth and learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, educators need to be able to find a way for students to feel they are <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/video-samsungs-solve-for-tomorrow-program-world-changing-youth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">having a positive impact<\/a>. That\u2019s where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/solvefortomorrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solve for Tomorrow<\/a> can be a big assist \u2013 as a program and process to help students organize their thinking and even strengthen their <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/samsung-solve-for-tomorrow-2023-national-winners-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>communications skills<\/strong><\/a> as they collaborate together to tackle big issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Samsung Solve for Tomorrow: 10 Student Teams, 10 Ideas to Save Society &amp; the Planet\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/olc2RPnq6Hk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Describing the path her students took to attain their $50,000 sustainability nod, the Bloomington, Indiana-based educator explains, \u201cMy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/solvefortomorrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solve for Tomorrow<\/a> students mentioned that climate anxiety had significantly shaped their life experience as they progressed to middle school and started seeing the world around them in a more expansive way. So that\u2019s what my students asked to do: work on a \u2018BIG THING,\u2019 in their words, that would help mitigate the climate crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The science students focused on using highly reflective paint that can lower building temperatures by reflecting away sunlight and thereby reduce urban heat island effects. They enlisted art students to design and paint a mural highlighting climate change at Bloomington\u2019s WonderLab Science Museum, demonstrating society\u2019s ability to make a difference. The joint effort of science geeks and creative types sent a powerful message to the larger community.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embedded product-module\">\n\t\t<a id=\"product-module-0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/solvefortomorrow\/\" title=\"Solve for Tomorrow\" class=\"snr-article_product-image\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/06102359\/solve-for-tomorrownewsroom-product-module-1.png\" alt=\"Solve for Tomorrow\">\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>Milks\u2019 students definitely made an impact. \u201cHere in Bloomington, it didn\u2019t take long for them to make a big impact,\u201d she writes. \u201cA business incubator in town wants to use their paint on their new building. There\u2019s been discussion at the municipal level about surveying and increasing the number of reflective white roofs in town. The Museum will paint another wall of their building with various paints to demonstrate their reflective values and 2 or 3 of my students will construct a family learning experience centered on <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/igniting-gen-z-innovation-ingenuity-samsung-launches-2023-2024-solve-for-tomorrow-stem-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their STEM solution<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another aspect of social impact that Milks stresses is that learning to do work that <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/samsung-solve-for-tomorrow-oped-harry-preston-stem-learning-students-sft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">makes the world a better place<\/a> for other people \u2013 and learning how to do that WITH other people \u2013 builds <strong>a sense of belonging<\/strong> &#8211;
