JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 04 October 2019 – Samsung Pay, the popular mobile tap-and-pay solution, is proving its worth once again in a big way. A recent article on Mybroadband.co.za has highlighted the seriousness of card skimming, which has risen sharply in South Africa. Conversely, Samsung Pay has seen a dramatic uptake in the past year, having already hit over one million transactions. Innovative services like Samsung Pay prevents criminals from cloning card details and recording consumer’s PINs through concealed hardware on point-of-sale machines.

Samsung Pay negates the need to use a physical card and be susceptible to skimmers. It uses tokenisation from Visa and MasterCard to protect your physical card information, so every time you make a payment your physical card information is never used during the payment process but instead a unique cryptographic sequence is used for the transaction, which changes with every transaction made. Additional protection is provided through Samsung’s government-grade Knox security, already built-in to Samsung smartphones and watches.

Card skimming is expected to increase into the upcoming festive season. It could happen anywhere when using a point-of-sale machine. This means points-of-sale devices, at restaurants or grocery stores, may not be safe. The fact is, it is difficult for consumers to remember to inspect point-of-sale machines for any irregularities every time they pay using their card. This is why South Africans are turning to the security and simplicity of Samsung Pay. It provides the functionality of a bank and loyalty card, which can be used almost anywhere* you can swipe, insert or tap a card.

“Samsung Pay provides peace of mind on an unprecedented level. Additionally, our customers have wholeheartedly embraced the convenience of paying using their ever-present smartphone seamlessly and effortlessly” says Justin Hume, Director: Integrated Mobility at Samsung South Africa.

Samsung Pay supports South Africa’s major banking institutions including Absa, Standard Bank, FNB, RMB, Discovery and Investec and has already hit over one million transactions. Samsung Pay can be downloaded, for free, from the Google Play Store or Galaxy Store depending on your Galaxy device. Once you load your bank cards, paying is always just a quick tap away. It’s convenience on the go. Samsung Pay can be used on the following devices: Galaxy Note 10+, Note 10, Note 9, Note 8, Galaxy S10+, S10, S10e, S9/S9+, S8/S8+, S7/S7 edge, A9, A80, A8, A70, A7 (2017), A5 (2017), A30s, Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Gear S3 and Gear Sport Watch.

* 97% acceptance rate based on local trials for compatible smartphones (NFC and MST). Compatible wearables and smartphones (NFC only) will have a lower acceptance rate.

The loss of a wallet is no longer the worry it was before

Local banks are embracing new ways to pay

Samsung Pay has turned smartphones into convenient digital wallets

It wasn’t that long ago that losing your wallet would have been a complete disaster. After all, you’d lose your bank and loyalty cards, important receipts and even precious pictures of your loved ones. But suddenly, the possession you just couldn’t do without is being replaced by your smartphone. Firstly, we now have countless pics of family and friends safely backed up on our devices and receipts can be easily stored with a simple picture. In terms of the primary use of a wallet, banks have now made it easier to use cardless banking at ATM’s. And then there’s a major revolution in terms of wallet-less payments. The arrival of Samsung Pay in the country in 2018 has turned smartphones into virtually the only payment device you need.

“Samsung Pay has brought South Africans a new level of convenience and security when making contactless mobile payments. Armed with your ever-present smartphone, you can now pay with your smartphone in a way you just couldn’t before. It’s this kind of convenience where technology can make a massive difference in our lives,” says Justin Hume, Director: Integrated Mobility at Samsung South Africa.

A Smarter Way to Pay has Arrived

Samsung Pay is continuing its meteoric rise in popularity and there are good reasons for it. This secure and simple digital wallet instantly gives Samsung Pay supported devices the functionality of a bank and loyalty card, which can be used almost anywhere* you can swipe, insert or tap a card. South Africans are clearly embracing safe and convenient ways to shop and Samsung Pay has provided an effortless approach to it. This success is being sustained through partnerships with major banking institutions including Absa, Standard Bank, Discovery Bank and FNB.

Technology Is Delivering On the Promise of Convenience and Safety

With a bank and even loyalty card, loaded on a Samsung smartphone, paying is as simple as swiping upwards on your screen, authenticate via PIN, fingerprint or iris and hold your phone by the payment terminal. Additionally, Samsung Pay’s security exceeds other mobile payment methods. Through tokenisation from Visa and MasterCard the physical card information is never used during the payment process but instead a unique cryptographic sequence and token is used for the transaction, where the cryptographic sequence changes with every transaction made. That’s a first in South Africa and its welcomed.

Yes, there may be some who still hold on to the familiarity of a wallet, but as time marches on, its replacement, the smartphone, is clearly beginning to play a more important role in our pockets, handbags and hearts.

Samsung Pay can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store and used on the following Samsung devices: Galaxy S10+, S10, S10e, Galaxy Note 9, Note 8, S9/S9+, S8/S8+, S7/S7 edge, A8 (2018), A7 (2017) and A5 (2017), Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy Note 10+, Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Gear S3 Watch and Gear Sport Watch.

* 97% acceptance rate based on local trials for compatible smartphones (NFC and MST). Compatible wearables (NFC only) will have a lower acceptance rate as they can only be used at contactless terminals. Terms and Conditions Apply.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 30 July, 2019 – Samsung Pay, now celebrating its one year anniversary has created a revolution in smartphone shopping in South Africa. Since last year, the innovative mobile payment system has added on a host of banking partners including Absa, Standard Bank, Discovery Bank, Investec and FNB and has already hit over one million transactions. Now, with its most recent software upgrade in July, it introduced Discover Tab, which gives users access to more features and promotions.

“Samsung Pay has redefined what consumers can expect from a digital wallet,” said Justin Hume, Director: Integrated Mobility at Samsung South Africa. “Our ongoing additions such as the Discover Tab takes the convenience even further. Its additional features, promotions, subscription offers and travel deals open up a world of options to users.”

Ever since its launch last year, Samsung Pay has constantly enhanced and upgraded what it offers. The new Discover Tab continues to build on this momentum. Additionally, Samsung is running an 8-week referral promotion, where users are encouraged to refer family and friends for the chance to be in Samsung Pay’s weekly draws, running over 8 weeks. The process is simple and automised:

• A Samsung Pay user goes into Samsung Pay
• They accept the T&C of the referral promo
• The customer gets a unique code that they forward to friends and family
• For every new customer that activates Samsung Pay with the unique code, the customer gets an entry into the weekly draws,
• The referral promo commences 5 August to 29 September 2019.

ABOUT SAMSUNG PAY

Samsung Pay also works almost anywhere* you can swipe, insert or tap a card.

Samsung Pay can be downloaded, for free, from the Google Play store or Galaxy Store depending on your Galaxy device. Once you load your bank cards, paying is always just a quick tap away.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 11 March, 2019 – Launched in August last year, Samsung Pay has revolutionised mobile payments in South Africa. This secure and simple digital wallet instantly gives Samsung Pay supported devices the functionality of a bank and loyalty card, which can be used almost anywhere* you can swipe, insert or tap a card. The innovative mobile payment system has already generated an impressive 400 000 purchase transactions since launch. It demonstrates the healthy appetite South Africans have for safe and convenient ways to pay.

This success was achieved through strong partnerships with banking institutions including Absa and Standard Bank. With the addition of FNB and RMB Private Bank, Samsung Pay’s growth will be amplified even more. Samsung Pay will also be available to Investec and Discovery Bank customers shortly which will make Samsung Pay as ubiquitous as any other means of traditional payment. Samsung Pay has taken a giant leap forward for digital mobile payments in the country. Effortless convenience has arrived in a big way.

“We’re excited to offer this innovative technology to more South Africans and are confident that the nation will continue to embrace the convenience of Samsung Pay with great enthusiasm. As a human centred company, Samsung is pleased to introduce a product that defies barriers and makes everyday tasks like the grocery run, so much easier,” says Justin Hume, Director: Integrated Mobility at Samsung South Africa.

Samsung Pay works seamlessly with supported Galaxy smartphones and has now grown to include supported Samsung Gear and Samsung Galaxy Watches so there are even more ways to enjoy the simplicity and convenience of Samsung Pay. With your bank cards loaded on a Samsung Pay supported smartphone or watch, paying is just a swipe, authenticate and tap away. It is also one of the most secure mobile payment methods available today leveraging Samsung’s government grade Knox security already built-in to Samsung smartphones and watches. Additionally, tokenisation from Visa and Mastercard protects your physical card information as it is never used during the payment process but instead a unique cryptographic sequence is used for the transaction, which changes with every transaction made. Samsung Pay can be downloaded, for free, from the Google Play store. Once you load your bank cards, paying is always just a quick tap away. It’s convenience on the go.

Samsung Pay can be used on the following devices: Galaxy S10+, S10, S10e, Galaxy Note 9, Note 8, S9/S9+, S8/S8+, S7/S7 edge, A8 (2018), A7 (2017) and A5 (2017), Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Gear S3 Watch and Gear Sport Watch.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 24 January, 2018 – Banking has always been a chore. According to a 2015 Finscope Survey, South Africans can spend up to 3 hours getting to and from their bank branch or an ATM*. And then of course, you still have to wait in queues. Fortunately, innovative technology such as Samsung Pay is revolutionising the way we use our bank cards.

“Samsung Pay has brought South Africans a new level of convenience and security when making contactless mobile payments. It makes a rushed trip to the stores and shopping malls, a lot easier. Armed with your ever-present smartphone, you can now pay with your smartphone faster and more conveniently than with a debit or credit card. It’s this kind of convenience where technology can make a massive difference in our lives,” says Justin Hume, Director: Integrated Mobility at Samsung South Africa.

Debit and credit cards have already made a literal impact on wallets. They have allowed many people to go cashless. This development, along with cardless banking at ATM’s, which is being widely promoted by local banks recently, has changed the banking landscape massively. The recent arrival of Samsung Pay on the local market is therefore well timed to turn your smartphone into virtually the only payment device you need.

With a bank card loaded on a Samsung smartphone, paying is as simple as swiping upwards on your screen, authenticate via PIN, fingerprint or iris and hold your phone by the payment terminal. Samsung Pay also works almost anywhere you can swipe, insert or tap a card. That’s a first in South Africa.

Even if 2019 is not the year of complete cardless banking, it’s undeniably still closer than we’ve even been before. The future has clearly arrived.

Samsung Pay can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store and used on the following compatible Samsung devices: Galaxy Note 9, Note 8, S9/S9+, S8/S8+, S7/S7 edge, A8 (2018), A7 (2017) and A5 (2017). If you cannot find Samsung Pay in the Google Play store, please do a firmware update for your smartphone to get access to this amazing feature.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 31 October, 2018 – As any millennial mum will tell you, it’s almost impossible to have two hands free at any one time. With one hand holding a baby, the other clutches onto a smartphone to keep up with appointments, friends and family, the office and online shopping. The reality is, when a woman becomes a mum she has to squeeze a dozen more hours into her day. The trade-off is fewer hours for herself. Fortunately, smartphones have at least helped to ease the burden of ticking off the impossible number of tasks on her to-do list.

Millennial mums are achieving what their parents could not. Born between 1980 and 2000, these super-mums are expanding the boundaries of what was possible even just a decade ago. The smartphone has become a trusted sidekick in all they do. It’s more than just a device to make calls and communicate. It’s their everything. With Samsung Pay, millennial mums are even better equipped to take on the day.

“Samsung Pay makes a millennial mum’s rushed trip to the stores and shopping malls a little bit easier. Armed with her ever-present smartphone, she can now pay with her phone as simply as with her debit or credit cards. It’s this kind of convenience that can make a mum’s day,” says Justin Hume, Director: Integrated Mobility at Samsung South Africa.

Yes, the days of carrying a credit or debit card are numbered. With the recently launched Samsung Pay loaded onto a phone, making a payment is as simple as a single swipe on your Samsung Galaxy smartphone, authentication via fingerprint, iris or PIN, and a tap on the payment terminal to complete the transaction. Samsung Pay’s ground-breaking technology works on most existing payment terminals – as easily as a physical card does and it’s safer. This means that a mum doesn’t even have to reach into the bag filled with the day’s many and necessary tools of the mum trade. The phone, already in hand, is poised to make fast, secure in-store payments on any contactless or non-contactless payment terminal.

When out and about, children in tow, Smartphones really are a mum’s best friend. Millennial mums are also keeping up with their friends via social media, and scheduling play dates to stay connected. Of course, there’s the flip side. Based on what they encounter on innumerable websites or even their own friend’s social media feeds, millennial mums are under a lot of pressure to excel. Despite the frantic pace of modern life, they are constantly bombarded with the latest perfect-parenting articles, on a baby’s diet, health, mental wellbeing and safety. To top it all, they also have to endure the uber-proud posts from friends and family who have seemingly perfected the mum and life balance – #HealthyDietHappyBaby. Adding another polite ‘like’ or ‘Well done my friend!” to the self-congratulatory posts can be painful. This means conveniences like Samsung Pay make them appreciate their most supportive friend, their smartphone, a little bit more.

Samsung Pay can be used with the Galaxy Note9, Note8, S9, S8, S7 and A8 devices, as well as the Galaxy A5 and A7 (2017 Edition). You can use your Standard Bank credit and cheque cards (Mastercard only), Absa debit, credit and cheque cards (Visa and Mastercard) and also your Avios, British Airways and Virgin money payment cards. More banks will follow soon. You can even add your loyalty cards into Samsung Pay. Protected by the ultra-secure Samsung Knox and tokenization from Visa and Mastercard, Samsung Pay is safer than carrying your cards, which are often at risk of cloning or fraud. And paying is a breeze.

Smartphones empower mums to be super-mums. She can conduct useful research, comparison shop and schedule appointments, all without missing a beat, as she straps the little one into the car seat for the millionth time. It helps her be the mum she wants to be. And that mum is extraordinary!
