Sandton’s skyline is an ever-changing landscape and the latest addition to this space is set to be the tallest. The Leonardo, a mixed-use building featuring residential, business and retail space, is currently under construction at 175 Maude Street. With a number of one, two and three-bedroom apartments and eight penthouses, retail spaces and premium business suites, one of the design principles is to be energy efficient, as well as ensuring consistent thermal comfort for all tenants.

With mixed-use buildings, addressing the diverse thermal comfort needs of different occupants is often a challenge. However, Samsung’s solution to the heating and cooling requirements of the entire building has been revolutionary. While variable refrigerant flow (VRF) technology affords users complete control over the interior temperature, uses no water, provides a means to heat water and is exceptionally energy-efficient, that’s not the reason the installation is ground-breaking. It’s all about the extended warranty and maintenance plans that have been put in place by Samsung, as well as the 24/7monitoring system that’s in place for the installation.

“Working with Improvair Environmental Solutions (IES), a company whose approach to solutions-based after care and maintenance is in line with Samsung’s innovative and customer-centric values has made this project not only possible but also allowed us flexibility in delivering excellent solutions for this complex installation,” says Samsung Business Lead, Digital Air Solutions, Troy Gower.

The intricate solution was designed in collaboration with two consulting engineers, Ian Wingrove and Graeme Page, who worked closely with the Samsung team and IES.

The complete solution that’s been put in place by Samsung is set to be the future of specifications for heating and cooling requirements in buildings, whether mixed-use or not.

The history of trying to keep cool in extreme temperatures is a long and interesting one – from slaves cooling royalty with palm fronds, to the latest digital air solutions which feature Wind-Free technology.

Modern air conditioning relies on the process of evaporation to cool and humidify the air at the same time. While this concept is constantly being improved upon, its roots extend back to ancient *Egypt, where reeds were hung in windows and moistened with trickling water. When wind blew through the window, the water evaporated and helped to bring down the searing Saharan heat. Later, in ancient Rome, water from aqueducts were circulated through the walls of some homes to cool them. In medieval Persia cisterns and wind towers were used to cool buildings during the hot season.

The first air conditioner resembling the system we know today was installed in a home in the United States of America in 1914. Inventors’ understanding of scientific principles had grown in leaps and bounds between ancient Egypt and early 20th century US. The principle of evaporation remained intact, but the process was now achieved by driving air through water-cooled coils.

A little over a century after this invention, air conditioners are widely in use across the globe, in homes, businesses and cars. Most of the air conditioning systems in use today still rely on these methods. Samsung’s new Wind-Free Cooling technology represents a revolutionary shift in the way air conditioners work to make our lives more bearable. It has been designed to optimise airflow to bring new levels of comfort to our daily climate control requirements.

Samsung’s new air conditioners, which feature Wind-Free Cooling technology provides consistent temperatures without directly blasting users with air or creating unpleasant cold spots, offering value that you can feel at home and on your electric bill.

“Samsung uses its global network and innovation to create positive change for people across the world. We use design and innovation to provide people with new experiences and aspirational products such as Wind-Free technology,” says Mike van Lier, Samsung Director Consumer Electronics.

In its vision of Wind-Free Cooling technology, Samsung aimed to create an air conditioning system that does not rely on strong blasts to cool a whole room. This required new ways of thinking about how the appliance vented air and regulated the strength of its breeze. The result: an air conditioning system that maintains consistent and ideal temperatures that keep them comfortable all day and all night, while also keeping its cool with the environment through a serious cut in energy expenditure.

Whether you are sleeping, working, studying or exercising, it is vital that these be done in optimal temperatures in order to do these to the best of

Whether you are sleeping, working, studying or exercising, it is vital that these be done in optimal temperatures in order to do these to the best of your ability. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is through the superior design and technology offered by Samsung’s air conditioners.

Most people spend the majority of their week in an office, often not realising how much of an effect the air temperature has on their working environment. Just a couple of degrees too hot or cold can have a major impact on productivity. A number of studies have been conducted to determine what the best temperature is and, although there is some disagreement, the optimal range has been determined to be somewhere between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius.

The situation is similar when, after a long day at work, you want to get a good night’s sleep. Your set point body temperature decreases and this mild drop in body heat induces sleep. If it’s too hot or cold, the body struggles to achieve this. Since a cooler room is more likely to stimulate sleep, the general consensus is that a room be kept between 18 to 22 degrees Celsius.

It has also been shown that when exercising, your body can regulate its temperature better in cooler conditions, enabling you to exercise longer and thus burn more calories. On the other hand, sustained endurance training in the heat can actually improve your performance when you find yourself in less scorching environments. So, whether you are preparing for an ultra-distance race, or merely trying to lose some weight by running on your treadmill at home, you can easily achieve the ideal temperature suited to your specific training needs by simply adjusting the temperature on your air conditioner.

“Samsung understands just how important it is to not only achieve a specific temperature, but to maintain it with as little deviation as possible,” says Michael McKechnie, Director of Digital Appliances at Samsung Electronics SA. “Our Samsung 360 Cassette air conditioning unit offers an omni-directional airflow discharge. This eradicates cold air drafts and provides a temperature deviation of less than 0.6 degrees Celsius across an area spanning a diameter of 9.3m, thus delivering optimum temperature control.”

Having such control is critical, as there are a multitude of activities that demand a specific temperature range. One such situation involves studying, where a substantial amount of energy can be expended if you are too cold, thereby reducing your concentration. Alternatively, if you are too hot, you can become restless and unfocused.

Whatever your environmental needs are at any given time, ensuring the correct equipment is available in your space can make the transition between different temperatures both convenient and efficient. The more effective your air conditioning system, the likelihood of it consuming less energy is increased, making it cost-effective and environmentally friendly as well.

“The rounded design of the Samsung 360 Cassette creates a circular air wave, which consistently controls the temperature of the room by providing an even distribution of air across a full 360 degree direction. The bladeless design ensures fast and comfortable cooling, while the built-in Samsung Virus Doctor technology – included as an optional extra – eliminates viruses and reduces the possibility of illness. Best of all, the 360 Cassette not only creates an optimal and comfortable environment, but it is also aesthetically pleasing, catering to our style-conscious consumers,” McKechnie concludes.

Winter and spring are the top runny nose seasons in South Africa thanks to viruses, increased pollen counts and pollution in the air. That’s nearly half

Winter and spring are the top runny nose seasons in South Africa thanks to viruses, increased pollen counts and pollution in the air. That’s nearly half a year of discomfort for hundreds of thousands of South Africans. Combating colds, flu, hayfever and environmental pollutants starts with an investment in an advanced air conditioner.

“Contrary to outmoded popular belief, air conditioners do not increase the chances of catching colds – in fact, advanced technology allows them to effectively filter and purify the air, at the same time as they heat or cool,” says Michael McKechnie, Director: Digital Appliance Group at Samsung South Africa.

“For example, selected Samsung air conditioner models may have the ‘Virus Doctor’ and easy filter technology included, or the accessory may be purchased as an optional feature. This innovative and health-promoting device eliminates up to 99% of airborne bacteria and viruses*, as well as smoke, pollen, dust and other contaminants, keeping the air inside clean and pure.”

Furthermore, air conditioners are not simply cooling devices – advanced new air conditioners can heat a room more effectively, uniformly and affordably than old-fashioned space heaters can, all the while neutralising contaminants in the air.

Unlike the air conditioners of old, advanced new air conditioners are elegant, virtually silent and don’t produce annoying drafts. Modern air conditioners come in a range of stylish floor, wall or ceiling-mounted designs and feature innovations such as a choice of models suited to anything from quick and powerful cooling through to gentle, silent cooling for bed time.

Maintenance, filter cleaning and temperature control have all become infinitely easier in new digital air conditioning units, with some models even supporting remote control via a mobile app. “Featuring intelligent technology to adjust to the surrounding atmosphere, air conditioners use minimal power to keep your home or office at a constant, comfortable temperature and purify the air – finally living up to the name air conditioner,” McKechnie concludes.

*Virus Doctor and Easy Filter eliminates dust, dangerous airborne contaminants and allergens, as well as bacteria and viruses, including the Influenza A and Corona viruses – firstly using a filter and secondly with Virus Doctor. So it keeps the air you breathe clean and healthy. Tested in Kitasato Environmental Science Centre (Japan) & Yonsei Univ. (Korea) / Korea test lab (FITI / KEMTI) and Japan test lab (ITEA). Effective on 4 viruses, including Subtype H1N1, and certain bacteria. Data has been measured under specific testing conditions and may differ based on environmental factors.

Innovative design transforms air flow

The rounded design of the Samsung 360 Cassette creates a circular air wave which consistently controls the temperature of the room by providing an even distribution of air across a full 360 degree direction. The bladeless design of the unit also ensures fast and comfortable cooling without producing a cold draft, by ensuring 100 percent of air volume flow control compared to traditional four-way Cassette units, which can lose up to 25 percent of air volume. This results in a 34 percent increase in cooling speed.

Unique stylish design

The 360 Cassette combines revolutionary performance with an elegant design, which will blend in and enhance any setting. The unit features a stylish panel and intuitive display that allows users to change the air flow depending on preference.
