Samsung Electronics cemented its position as the global leader of the commercial display market, defending marking the largest global share for 15 consecutive years[1].

Having entered the commercial display market with a full B2B signage in 2008, Samsung continues to make history of digital signage with consistent technological innovation, differentiated solutions, and market leadership.

Samsung started by achieving first place in global market share of digital signage in 2009. Then in 2012, Samsung opened the LCD renaissance by introducing two transparent LCD models. In 2017, the world’s first cinema LED, Onyx, was unveiled, presenting a new standard for theater screens with unbelievable picture quality and infinite contrast ratio.

Over a decade and a half of “firsts” has led to myriad breakthroughs in digital signage. The world’s first modular display “The Wall,” introduced in 2018, has freely adjustable screen size and shape, expanding the scope of digital signage to various spaces, like art museums and department stores.

As demand for immersive content increased, Samsung created a new version of “The Wall” exclusively for virtual production studios in 2023. With ultimate picture quality, it overcomes the challenges of physical on-site sets and leads to a reduction in production time and cost. The Wall for Virtual Production continues to change the landscape of the content production with a top-tier customizable solution.

Here’s a look at the footsteps of Samsung Signage, which has been solidifying its #1 position globally for 15 consecutive years2 with innovative display technology.

△ Hyesung Ha, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics

Last month I had the opportunity to travel to Barcelona, Spain to attend Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) for the first time in two years. It reminded me that the world is returning to routines and norms. At the same time, it will be a fundamentally different world moving forward.

I can also apply these observations to Samsung’s digital signage business. In 2022 and beyond, Samsung will deliver a variety of solutions that were and still are important to businesses today, as well as new technologies designed to meet the needs of the modern world.

It’s clear that we will never fully return to what we used to think of as “normal” life. We’ve already reimagined offices, classrooms, entertainment and so much more within our daily routines. It’s my job not only to keep up with these trends, but to fundamentally reimagine the role of digital signage moving forward. That’s why Samsung is focused on redefining our most common spaces, reconnecting the world through new experiences and re-emphasizing the importance of digital signage in our daily lives.

Redefining Learning and Collaboration in a New Era

One of the largest shifts of the past few years is the role technology plays within common environments such as classrooms in schools and meeting rooms in offices. These environments saw an increasing demand for digital transformations and now new considerations are required to ensure every student and professional has the same high-quality collaboration experience regardless of whether they attend in-person, online, or in a hybrid manner. In other words, learning and collaboration spaces have been redefined with an increased emphasis on inclusivity in any scenario.

Samsung is addressing this need with the new Samsung Flip Pro. It provides students and professionals with high-quality collaboration experiences whether they are in-person or remote with enhanced usability and specialized features to meet ever-changing business and education needs. With a focus on seamless and intuitive interactions, it’s easy to set up and easy to use. The newly added intuitive control panel enhances the overall classroom or meeting room experience along with the industry’s fastest touch latency, enhanced multi touch features and the ability to simultaneously connect devices to the display wirelessly for enhanced collaboration.

Reconnecting Through New Outdoor Experiences

As consumers return to public shopping malls, sporting events and other forms of entertainment, businesses are competing now more than ever for their attention. With more outdoor activities, signage has become a bridge between consumers and brands while helping people enjoy digital art. In other words, signage reconnects consumers with the world.

LED signage also creates unforgettable experiences inside sports stadiums. Delivering the best viewing angles for fans was one of Samsung’s highest priorities. As part of these efforts, Samsung designed the largest videoboard ever created for sports, the Infinity Screen in SoFi Stadium as a part of the Hollywood Park Technology Alliance. Measuring 70,000 square feet, the incredible curved, 360-degree, dual-sided screen greets fans and provides a state-of-the-art way to experience the game.

Another trend where we see a major opportunity for growth is the electric vehicle industry. As demand for electric vehicles surges, carmakers, governments and local businesses are rushing to build more electric vehicle charging stations. This provides a new outlet to serve information and deliver promotions to electric vehicle owners, and Samsung outdoor signage is the perfect solution for this scenario. With ultra-bright picture quality and durability with certified IP56-rated protection, the outdoor signage can excel in a variety of weather conditions and environments, hence businesses can create engaging visual experiences while customers top up their batteries in charging stations.

Re-emphasize the Vision of ‘Screens Everywhere’ With Unmatchable Micro LED Technology

Micro LED technology is set to define the future of display innovation. From the luxury industry to hospitality and travel, the potential of Micro LED is endless. The Wall is Samsung’s state-of-the-art display technology, which features even more options for businesses looking to transform their spaces with next level picture quality and immersion.

Samsung is the leader in Micro LED displays, which contain smaller LEDs, and allow greater LED density, enabling brighter and more detailed color expression inside a slimmer display profile. To create our industry-leading Micro LED technology, we have focused on three key areas: Samsung developed fully integrated ultra-fine Micro LED chips; such densely populated LEDs result in stunning brightness; and we continue to secure processing know-how for ultra-fine semiconductor chips to improve mass production.

These unparalleled technologies helped Samsung’s 2022 lineup of The Wall (IWB) open up new possibilities. The micro pitch feature of the IWB delivers the most detailed picture with 0.63 pixel pitch, the slimmest ever, in addition to providing a variety of screen sizes to meet any consumer or business need. Meanwhile, The Wall All-in-One (IAB) has transformed the installation process with a pre-adjusted seam and a ‘Pre-Assembled Frame Kit’ which makes the whole process as simple as a consumer TV. The Wall All-in-One not only saves valuable time but also lowers the total cost of ownership while delivering a better viewing experience.

In a constantly changing world, Samsung will continue to deliver breakthrough innovations to realize the vision of “Screens Everywhere” based on industry-leading Micro LED technology.

Reimagining the Role of Digital Signage

As an industry leader in the global signage market for the past 13 consecutive years,1 we will continue to expand our sustainability efforts by creating products that can reduce carbon emissions and contribute to resource circulation.

Our digital signage solutions, including the 2022 Smart Signage, have received certified energy efficiency grades that rise to new industry standards, such as ENERGY STAR and EPEAT. Samsung also has incorporated eco-conscious packaging featuring recycled materials in all signage products since 2021 and became the first business in the industry to achieve the reducing CO2 label, certified by the Carbon Trust for its display portfolio.

In recognition of our eco-conscious efforts for our sustainability initiative, we won the ‘Sustainability Innovation of the Year’ at the AV News Awards in ISE. As we are grateful for the recognition of our efforts, we plan to make each step count while we collectively change production practices for a sustainable future.

The return to routines combined with new customer expectations and habits provides businesses with a rare opportunity to reimagine their offerings and practices. By considering a new role for digital signage moving forward, we’re helping our customers reimagine what’s possible to keep them ahead of the curve.

I’m excited for this next chapter for digital signage. At Samsung, we’re passionate about bringing game-changing innovation and value to our enterprise customers. We will continue to innovate, reimagining the role of digital signage in new and conventional spaces, all while increasing our customers’ possibilities in this new era.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, 20 February, 2018. The ancient Greeks and Romans used signs to depict specific businesses, using symbols made of terracotta, wood, stone or metal. Around 1389, a law was passed in England by King Richard III that any establishment selling ale must place a sign outside the building. It didn’t take long before the utilitarian signs became more intricate, including logos and images, like lions, shields, dragons and other popular symbols of the time. During the 16th and 17th centuries, signs became increasingly flamboyant with gold leafing, wrought iron and hand-carved wooden designs being common place.

It’s uncommon today to see a business without a sign. Telling potential customers who you are and what you do is essential in their decision to enter a store or not. Of course, billboards and other outdoor advertising spaces have expanded this concept. Digital options, however, have changed the way signage is approached. Now content can be altered in an instant – from video to live feeds. There are challenges with digital signage, of course, because of weather conditions, sunlight and durability. But, innovative technology always finds a way to overcome potential challenges.

Mike van Lier, Director Consumer Electronics for Samsung South Africa, says, “The Samsung solution to digital signage offers a completely integrated, self-contained ultra-slim display with an embedded power box, housed in an impact-resistant enclosure and thermally protected by a patent-pending filter-less steady cooling system.”

Even in outdoor spaces that are affected by direct sunlight, Samsung’s high 2,500-nit brightness, an auto brightness sensor that optimizes brightness, together with circular polarizing technology and 5,000:1 contrast ratio (3,000:1 for 85″ display) work together to deliver easily seen messages, no matter what the light conditions. Samsung Full Outdoor displays are also IP56 certified to withstand dust, water, rain, snow, sleet, and corrosion while the Magic protects against vandalism.

Van Lier continues, “With Samsung’s technology, there’s simply no limit to what you can do to highlight your business, whether it’s an in-store presentation, a window display or a big outdoor screen showcase.”

Outdoor digital displays, often referred to as DOOH (Digital Out-of-Home) signage, like interactive billboards and street guides have transformed cities by completely changing the way we interact with the world around us.

“Digital signage is fast involving, incorporating technologies like Big Data and Internet of Things (IoT), to offer so much more than generic information. As the race to create the ‘next big thing’ in signage accelerates, Samsung believes that innovative solutions have the power to transform large format displays into the future of global communications,” says Mike van Lier, Director of Enterprise Business Division at Samsung Electronics South Africa.

With the incorporation of the IoT and Big Data, the use of electronic display platforms delivers a more personalised shopping experience. This is exemplified in new signs that utilise consumers’ shopping histories to recommend specific products, or allow customers to see virtual models that share their height, weight and even hair colour posing in a selected outfit. Restaurants, too, are enhancing the dining experience through interactive digital menus that let diners easily customise their orders.

At concerts and sporting events, digital signage provides a full view for all so that not a minute of the action is missed. The addition of augmented reality (AR) technology contributes to the way the audience learn about the performers or players like never before, taking entertainment to an entirely new level.

Transportation is yet another sector that stands to greatly benefit from the technology to provide up-to-the-minute information that refines the customer experience at train stations, bus terminals and airports. Once en route, passengers are kept informed and entertained by on-board displays.

Ranking number one in annual global digital signage unit sales since 2009 and having recently extended its global market share to 28.1% in 2015, Samsung has established itself as a leader in this ever-growing market.

Samsung continues to maintain its position through its state-of-the-art technologies that suit a wide range of business needs, including LCD-based transparent displays, the world’s largest e-LED signage, ultra-narrow, slim-bezel video walls (including the UH55F-E model), UHD signage and DOOH-equipped trucks.

“Once-complex communications are now relayed through simple images, making retail presentations, outdoor displays and road signs that allow for unlimited possibilities. Additionally, this communications technology has evolved to accommodate a wide variety of content, providing new avenues to deliver engaging and aesthetically appealing messages while replacing analogue signage altogether,” says van Lier.

When Mercedes-Benz South Africa launched a major refurbishment project to upgrade its AMG Driving Academy at Zwartkops Raceway, it wanted to be able to showcase the Mercedes-AMG vehicles in a digital format. This required the assistance of digital specialists, which led to the company bringing Samsung Electronics South Africa on board, to deliver a comprehensive Digital Signage solution.

According to Mike van Lier, Director of Enterprise Business Division at Samsung Electronics South Africa, the goal of Mercedes-Benz was to provide the AMG Driving Academy attendees with a premium experience that went beyond simply driving on the track in their high performance AMG vehicles.

“Samsung undertook the initial, detailed scope for the project in September of 2014. It included a complete understanding of their requirements and was followed by a close working relationship with the architects. Samsung was also required to start 3D designs and renderings and provide support to other contractors involved in the overall project. In this way, we ensured that every detail was taken into consideration,” van Lier says.

Samsung supplied the AMG Driving Academy with a Samsung Digital Signage solution that comprised of a 4×4 Video Wall display, as well as a combination of 55” and 65” stand-alone displays that are positioned throughout the Academy.

“Any project of this magnitude will face its share of obstacles, but these were overcome through close collaboration between Samsung, Mercedes-Benz and various other contractors involved. This cooperation ultimately resulted in the technical and aesthetic aspects being effectively translated, ensuring that the outcome surpassed the vision for the Academy,” notes van Lier.

“Samsung provided us with great service during this upgrade, assisting from the outset of the project with valuable advice, recommendations and is still, in fact, supporting us,” says Marcel Luis Mustelier Perez, Marketing & CRM Manager at Mercedes-Benz South Africa. “The upgrade has been extremely successful as we are now able to provide a facility that matches the expectation of the brand, as well as the quality of our product. The AMG Driving Academy has hosted various events since the upgrade and the Samsung equipment plays an important role in providing a venue of exceptional standards,” Perez adds.

The relationship between the two organisations has since expanded. Mercedes-Benz South Africa and Samsung have already engaged on further defining the vehicle manufacturer’s Digital Dealership strategy. Successful implementations have been completed at the Mercedes-Benz Brandcentre Bedfordview as well as at the Mercedes-Benz Century Brandcentre City in Cape Town.

“With our assistance and solutions Mercedes-Benz has achieved the exact goal and vision it was aiming for with the AMG Driving Academy refurbishment. Furthermore, Samsung has become the company’s trusted advisor in respect of its Digital Dealership journey,” concludes van Lier.
