While load-shedding is a thing of the past, it remains important for South African businesses to focus on using electricity as efficiently as possible. Such efforts will minimise the strain placed on the existing electricity grid and may be achieved through the implementation of the latest in air-conditioning technologies.

In order to confront this challenge, Samsung has engineered an air-cooled chiller that offers greater energy efficiency and ease of use, all in an innovative and compact design. With the revolutionary Digital Variable Multisystem (DVM) Chiller, the company has embedded its world-class Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) Inverter Scroll Compressor with Flash Injection technology, limiting both electricity requirements and wear and tear.

“Our new chillers are able to reduce annual utility costs between 36% and 50%, when compared to conventional chillers. This is because the DVM inverter-driven system allows for one outdoor unit to serve multiple indoor units. Furthermore, Samsung’s DVM compressor has a variable capacity from 10% to 100%, so if only one or two indoor units are in operation, the compressor operates at a fraction of its capacity, effecting major electricity savings,” says Michael McKechnie, Director of Digital Appliances Group at Samsung Electronics SA.

Where a conventional system works hard – and requires lots of power – to bring a room to the desired temperature and then switches off, only to come back on again when the temperature dips or rises above the desired mark, DVM and Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems run more slowly and continuously.

This approach is extremely beneficial in terms of operating efficiency and decreasing strain on the electrical grid. In addition, it also significantly limits wear and tear on the system, saving companies money in terms of maintenance costs.

Samsung’s range of chillers has been designed to deliver a wide range of additional benefits to organisations, beyond the obvious energy efficiency requirements. DVM Chillers have a modular design, which provides a wide choice of configurations, allowing companies to simply and flexibly combine modules and expand capacity from 15 to 240 tons in various ways. This relates to less time, cost and effort being involved in transporting, moving and installing these appliances, while enabling businesses to optimise space at the same time.

“Since no cooling tower is required with these appliances, there is a space saving of close to 50%. Instead of having large mechanical rooms taking up vast areas of your building, a café, gym or recreation room can easily be accommodated in the space for your employees. Now this is something that’s really beneficial,” McKechnie concludes.

Samsung’s DVM Chillers offer instant temperature control, user-friendly installation and advanced functionality that will suit any business premises.

Samsung Electronics South Africa announced the launch of its new digital variable multi (DVM) Chiller, which unites the strengths of air-source chiller and variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems to provide a high performance, energy efficient unit.

Responding to the growing demand for water-source ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) following the tightening of European Union (EU) regulations on F-gas levels, Samsung has engineered an air-cooled Chiller that offers greater energy efficiency and ease of use in an innovative compact design.

By reducing the system refrigerant levels significantly more than a conventional chiller, the Samsung DVM Chiller not only complies with current 2015 EU refrigerant quota levels but also adheres to the further upcoming reduction in levels (35 percent by 2018).

In the revolutionary DVM Chiller, Samsung has embedded the world-class brushless direct current (BLDC) Inverter Scroll Compressor with Flash Injection technology, ensuring over 75 percent of heating capacity at -20 °C ambient temperature with greater energy efficiency. The Chiller enables users to reduce annual utility costs by 36 percent to 50 percent compared to conventional chillers.

The Samsung DVM Chiller also delivers powerful heating performance while providing cold water through thermal ice storage with an in-built pressure and temperature sensor, which prevents device breakdown from freeze-bursts.

“We know that efficiency, comfort and performance are key factors when selecting HVAC systems,” says Michael McKechnie, Director Digital Appliances Group at Samsung Electronics SA. “We believe that the Samsung DVM Chiller is the best in class in each of these areas.”

Unrivalled operational economy

The Samsung Module Chiller enables users to reduce annual utility costs by approximately 36 to 50 percent compared to conventional chillers. Up to eight modules can be combined, offering an expansion of system capacity, while the operational modes can be adjusted to allow for seasonal requirements, such as low or peak season.

Easy installation and maintenance

The Samsung DVM Chiller is more compact than any other module chillers, requiring an installation area of just 1.37 m² per unit, maximising the capacity of the available rooftop space. It delivers the low maintenance installation of a VRF unit through its modular design, allowing for a reduction in installation and transportation costs.

“Samsung is committed to continuously researching and developing cutting edge system air conditioning solutions which significantly reduces both running costs and environmental impact. The new DVM Chiller is a testament to the plethora of benefits created through innovative technology and efficient design,” McKechnie concludes.

Samsung Electronics South Africa announced the launch of the Digital Variable Multi (DVM S) Eco 14 HP, a new side discharge variable refrigerant flow (VRF) air conditioner that is engineered to deliver a single outdoor unit solution for apartments and office buildings.

The improved performance of the Samsung DVM S Eco 14 HP ensures that it meets the increasing market need for a specialised single outdoor unit to reduce the cost of previous multiple loading and sub-duct installation in multi-room buildings.

The innovative design of the DVM S Eco 14 HP features a robust Inverter Scroll Compressor and corrugate fin, which improves heating performance by 20 percent and increases air flow by 10 percent compared to standard side discharge VRF units.

“Research and development (R&D), as well as design, play key roles in how we develop our products as we’re always focused on delivering cutting-edge technology and ensuring the products we deliver are highly efficient,” said Michael McKechnie, Director Digital Appliances Group at Samsung Electronics SA. “The DVM S Eco 14 HP delivers unbeatable performance among the side discharge VRF units and does so with the greatest energy efficiency, as well as the best use of space, with its unique compact design.”

Single Solution for Multi-room Buildings

The increased horse power of the DVM S Eco (maximum 14 HP) means that only one single outdoor unit is needed to manage the air conditioning requirements for an apartment or office building, in place of multiple costly units. All areas of the building are covered as the new unit also provides an extended piping length of up to 160 meters and an installation height of up to 50 meters. The width of the new DVM S Eco 14 HP is less than one meter (940 mm), maximising capacity and using space more efficiently, while the four-way piping enables convenient installation.

Greater Energy Efficiency

The design of the Inverter Scroll Compressor in the DVM S Eco 14 HP has improved displacement and velocity due to its asymmetric design that reduces loss of friction. The use of robust materials means the unit is reliable even at a high speed of operation and ensures optimal oil supply and control. These key factors also contribute to the device’s efficiency.

Operating Temperature Range

The unit also has the advantage of new Flash Injection Technology which increases refrigerant flow by 32 percent under cold ambient temperature and extends the heating operation range to -25 °C. In addition, the cooling range of the unit is widened to 52 °C.

“Samsung continues to provide customers with superior products using our ground-breaking technology and leading innovations. We believe our new range of air conditioning solutions will greatly benefit them and increase their comfort levels through offering an ideal temperature both in the home or workplace,” concludes McKechnie.
