Samsung in collaboration with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) is running an Equity Equivalent Investment Programme (EEIP) Service

Samsung in collaboration with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) is running an Equity Equivalent Investment Programme (EEIP) Service Centre campaign – an extension of last year’s initiative and a call encouraging more suitable, black-owned Service Centre enterprises to apply for participation in the Enterprise Development (ED) programme.

Last year’s campaign was a broad invitation to small and medium-sized (SME) enterprises operating within the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Service Centre space to apply for funding. While the ICT category received a sufficient number of applications – there is a need to focus exclusively on Service Centres and encourage more eligible SMEs in this category to participate in this year’s campaign.

The 2026 campaign is trying to increase the number of service centre participants in this ED programme and is now focusing on black-owned SMEs but targeting mainly underserved provinces. It is therefore looking for skilled service centre entrepreneurs with a minimum of three (3) years experience in mobile device and/or consumer electronic repairs. The main aim of this Samsung EEIP ED programme is to assist SMEs to operate suitably funded accredited service centres in an urban or peri-urban area with sufficient retail footprint.

Samsung is well aware of the government’s NDP Vision 2030 (National Development Plan) targets and the critical role that the SME sector can play in job creation in the country. In her keynote address at the JSE SME Rise Capital Matching Initiative conference, the Minister of Small Business Development highlighted that the NDP Vision 2030 has set a target of generating 11 million jobs by 2030, with small businesses projected to account for over 9 million of those employment opportunities.

And, in order for government to achieve its ambitious employment goals – there is a need for such EEIP ED programmes aimed at ensuring sustainable growth of businesses in the SME space that will result in economic growth and lead to job creation.

Nicky Beukes, Samsung EEIP Project Manager said: “As Samsung, we understand the number of challenges that affect the growth of local SME Service Centres in the small to medium-term. This ED programme is there to ensure that we bring positive change to more eligible entrepreneurs with experience in the Service Centre market. As a company, we are committed to enhancing empowerment and ICT entrepreneurship development that will stimulate job creation. Ultimately, the aim of this year’s EEIP Service Centre campaign is to contribute to the growth of the participating service centres that will lead to job creation and economic growth.”

Some of the immediate challenges experienced by these service centre SMEs include competition resulting in reduced volumes as well as vertical integration of operations from big players. In addition, the improved quality of electronics in general – results in longer time-frames before any breakdown thereby reducing the need for repair services provided by service centres.

And, in South Africa, it is a well-known fact that the service centre industry is extremely competitive and it can take a number of years before profitability is reached. The fact is that sustainable volumes are required to ensure future success of the service centres. The funding support from this ED programme can assist service centre entrepreneurs to overcome some of these challenges.

Besides the funding element, successful participation in this year’s service centre campaign means that eligible SMEs can now have access to supply chain processes that can contribute to their repair volumes as well as specialised equipment and access to genuine parts. They also have an opportunity to receive full accreditation from an OEM and these benefits combined – can provide these small and medium enterprises with the ability to compete efficiently.

Beukes emphasised: “By participating in this campaign, you could also be one of the selected entrepreneurs with grant-funding to support operations, receive specialist business development support and have access to Samsung’s service repair network.”

How to Apply

If you are a talented service centre business with growth potential, the opportunity you have been waiting for has arrived. Samsung can help by empowering you to ignite and grow your service centre business. You could receive grant funding to capitalise the business and gain access to specialist business development support services.

Recently, thirty-five (35) students from the 5th Cohort of the University of the Western Cape (UWC) Software Development (SWD) Programme sponsored by Samsung – were recognised at a graduation ceremony held on 18 February 2026. The aim of Samsung’s SWD programme is to address youth unemployment and promote inclusivity for underserved communities in the technology sector.

According to the Western Cape Government: “Despite having the lowest unemployment rate in the country, the rate remains high (18.1% to 19.6% as of 2025/2026), indicating a need for even more job creation”.** This is one of the reasons why Samsung continues to be committed to investing in ICT education within the communities it serves; it’s the company’s way of trying to assist both the province and the country to overcome the youth unemployment challenge.

The graduating students are part of the Future-Innovation Lab (FIL) at UWC – a driving force in South Africa’s digital transformation agenda. Established in 2019 through a multi-year partnership with Samsung, the FIL creates pathways for young people to thrive in the digital economy through advanced training, applied research and inclusive innovation.

As the programme reaches the conclusion of its 2nd phase, its achievements are remarkable and deeply transformative. Over the past six years, the programme has empowered its beneficiaries with comprehensive training in cutting-edge software development technologies. Participants have gained proficiency in high-demand coding languages, software architecture, web and mobile app development, database management and more.

The hands-on and project-based approach has ensured that graduates emerge not just with theoretical knowledge, but also with the practical skills demanded by the modern job market. Just over 90% of the programme’s 384 beneficiaries have already successfully been taken up in industry. Another core focus of the programme has been addressing the lack of female software developers in the industry. In this regard, 51% female representation has been achieved in the programme to date.

Lois Dippenaar, Institutional Planner at UWC said: “This collaboration with Samsung demonstrates the real impact that industry-academic partnerships can have on social mobility and inclusive innovation. Our graduates leave this programme with practical experience, professional networks and a strong sense of purpose to shape South Africa’s digital future.”

The FIL aims to provide an opportunity to deserving previously disadvantaged youth (18-35) and equips students not only with strong foundations in software development and digital social innovation, but also with the advanced skills needed for emerging careers in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data-driven software development.

Importantly, through its work-integrated learning streams and close collaboration with industry, the FIL highly contributes to graduates’ readiness for the rapidly evolving AI and technology landscape. In addition, the Western Cape CoLab – an applied research unit at UWC which manages the FIL – complements this skills pipeline with research, policy engagement and applied projects on digital inclusion and technology governance.

Nicky Beukes, Samsung South Africa EEIP Project Manager.

Speaking at the event, Nicky Beukes, Samsung South Africa EEIP Project Manager added: “The Future-Innovation Lab reflects Samsung’s long-term commitment to developing digital skills and supporting youth employability in South Africa. Through this partnership with UWC, we are not only equipping young people with in-demand technical skills but also helping them build the professional confidence and workplace readiness required to succeed in the digital economy.”

Towards the end of the 10-month programme, students from this graduating cohort were able to present their projects, which showcased technology solutions addressing real-life problems or improving systems for greater efficiency. By designing apps and utilising the skills and knowledge gained throughout the programme, they demonstrated innovative approaches to solving challenges.

All of this illustrates the lasting impact that this programme has had on these graduating students. Also, it means that by aligning student training with national priorities such as AI maturity, digital skills and innovation for inclusion – UWC in collaboration with Samsung have managed to position themselves at the forefront of Africa’s efforts to ensure that digital technologies drive sustainable and equitable growth.

Beukes concluded: “As Samsung, we are very proud of these student’s achievements and the positive impact of our collaboration with UWC. Together with our partners, our continued commitment to ICT Education and youth empowerment allow us the opportunity to strengthen our focus on uplifting local communities by providing access to ICT training and skills development programmes – ensuring that individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds can thrive in the technology sector.”

This intensive training programme is designed to empower this group of young entrepreneurs that come from underserved communities in KZN with skills and knowledge to launch and grow their businesses. In addition, one of the programme’s intended objectives is to contribute to the growth of SMEs in the province.

Nicky Beukes, Samsung EEIP Project Manager said: “This Enterprise Development Bootcamp is part of Samsung’s broader commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and digital skills development in South Africa. As a socially responsible company, we are intent on investing in KZN – the country’s gateway for African and global trade as well as contributing to the province’s youth entrepreneurship.”

This Enterprise Development Bootcamp has started achieving some of its goals that include motivating these young technicians to create businesses that tackle the repair of consumer electronics, while promoting a culture of innovation and self-sufficiency within their respective communities. The unique selling point of this bootcamp lies in its four-month structured programme, which equips both existing entrepreneurs and aspirant business owners with essential skills and knowledge for enterprise growth and development.

“Samsung’s investment in the Bootcamp seeks to cultivate new entrepreneurs within the trade and artisan sector, serving as a catalyst for job creation and small business development,” added Beukes. “This programme is one of the ways that we are demonstrating our dedication to driving economic growth by empowering young talent and supporting entrepreneurial ventures in KZN.”

The programme’s comprehensive approach not only prepares participants for the pitching day but also instils confidence in future participants who have business ideas and require financial aid and support. By offering a clear pathway to business development, the Bootcamp stands out as a valuable resource for nurturing entrepreneurial success.

Sanele Gcumisa, Managing Member of Ocule IT explained further: “The programme is a key driver of job creation and small business development, contributing to economic growth and community empowerment in KZN. In collaboration with Samsung, we are committed to sustainable development that can ensure that this strategic initiative contributes to long-term positive impacts on the local community.

“This programme goes beyond providing financial aid; it is a comprehensive initiative designed to empower young technicians with the essential business skills and knowledge needed for sustainable growth and success. Together with Samsung, we are dedicated to providing guidance, mentorship and support to help participants establish sustainable businesses as well as secure investment opportunities,” concluded Gcumisa.

Samsung’s R280-million worth EEIP, which was launched in 2019, has managed to demonstrate considerable success since its inception. In its six years of sustained success, this year represents the 3rd edition of the programme and seeks to continue making a measurable difference to the socio-economic development of black South Africans. This year’s call follows two successful cycles and forms part of Samsung’s broader commitment to the ICT sector, SMME development and the government’s Vision 2030.

Nicky Beukes, Samsung EEIP Project Manager said: “This programme has in the last few years seen great success and has also had a positive impact in the lives of entrepreneurs in the ICT space. As part of our transformation objectives, our EEIP programme continues to contribute to the sustainable development goals of the National Development Plan (NDP).”

Importantly, through Samsung’s collaboration with the DTIC – these partners remain committed to making a positive contribution to broader economic growth and, to continue playing a significant role in both job creation as well as sustainable entrepreneurship opportunities within South Africa.

Beukes added: “And together with the DTIC, we have in the last few years re-affirmed our commitment to ICT development and economic transformation which are aligned to South Africa’s Vision 2030. This third edition of EEIP and its success to date, is a clear indication that Samsung’s significant investment in SMME development is yielding tangible results.”

This third, consecutive call to all black-owned SMEs in the ICT and Service Centre space across South Africa is a great opportunity for the country’s ICT SMMEs to grow and shape the future of their businesses through this Samsung ED Programme.

Samsung has accomplished a remarkable milestone by maintaining its Level 1 B-BBEE (Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment) status for seven (7)

Samsung has accomplished a remarkable milestone by maintaining its Level 1 B-BBEE (Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment) status for seven (7) consecutive years, an affirmation of its genuine commitment to transformation as well as continued development and growth in South Africa.

The company has continuously set new benchmarks in the industry and confirmed its determination in driving economic transformation in South Africa through its B-BBEE Initiatives. The retention of this Level 1 B-BBEE rating signifies and emphasises Samsung’s ongoing commitment to driving meaningful and sustainable economic transformation, diversity and inclusion within the organisation and the wider South African business landscape.

Over the years, Samsung has demonstrated its dedication to diversity and inclusion through a number of B-BBEE initiatives illustrated by its diverse workforce, partnerships with black SMMEs, access to supply chains, investment in workplace training, graduate programmes as well as its education-based Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

These B-BBEE initiatives are driven through Samsung’s landmark R280-million Equity Equivalent Investment Programme (EEIP), which was launched in May 2019 in collaboration with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (Dtic). Samsung is now celebrating six years of this programme’s sustained success. This EEIP programme is projected to have a measurable impact on job creation in the South African economy. Now in its seventh year, the EEIP programme has managed to rise to the challenge of achieving its ambitious goals.

Samsung’s unwavering dedication to creating a more inclusive and equitable business environment is proven once more by the maintenance of this Level 1 B-BBEE status. Also, this rating re-affirms Samsung’s continued drive to genuine economic transformation in South Africa and investment in the various pillars of the scorecard. The company’s approach to B-BBEE over the years – has focused on five key pillars: Ownership through EEIP & Management Control, Employment Equity & Skills Development, Preferential Procurement & Enterprise Development as well as Socio-Economic Development (Social Responsibility).

As a good corporate citizen that has consistently supported the country’s transformation agenda in the last three decades, Samsung has invested in a number of specific initiatives that have contributed immensely in fostering a more equitable society. As part of its skills development initiatives, Samsung has various programmes focused on electronics technician training, including the MICTSETA accredited Young Technician Programme.

The aim of this MICTSETA accredited Young Technician programme is to bridge the gap between education and employment. This is a structured learnership programme that combines practical work experience with theoretical training. The programme provides learners with skills to be able to work at Samsung Accredited Service Centres. This 12-month programme equips learners with technical skills as well as behavioural competencies giving them hands on experience – enabling the learners to successfully enter the workplace environment.

Samsung believes in supporting academically deserving students with proven financial need to take their first steps toward achieving their dreams and to obtain their first Undergraduate or Honours Degree. The Samsung External Bursary programme aims to fund academically deserving students who do not have the financial means to study full time towards an Undergraduate or Honours degree at a South African University or University of Technology. The programme also prioritises people living with disabilities. The aim of the programme is to address skills shortages as well as to attract talent pool aligned to Samsung’s business model. In 2024, Samsung benefited 122 bursars, including 82 students with disabilities.

This well-considered and integrated approach has enabled Samsung to partner with universities and SETA accredited training providers to train 1440 software developers and accredited technicians to enhance their prospects of securing employment, starting their own businesses and further training. The training of unemployed youth addresses a key need in the South African ICT sector and has resulted in a marked increase in female software developer and artisan graduates.

Also, in an effort to prove that its transformation agenda is not just a tick box exercise – Samsung has increased its focus on unemployed learners through its internship and learnership programmes – supported by an emphasis on creating work experiences during and post the learnership or internship period. This skills development programme is geared towards ensuring that Samsung increases the employability of the country’s young hopefuls. Samsung’s programme reach extends beyond Gauteng, it also includes Limpopo, Eastern Cape, Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Western Cape provinces.

In addition, Samsung’s efforts when it comes to enterprise development include its re-direction of existing spend to qualifying Black-Owned and Black-Women Owned Qualifying Small Enterprises (“QSEs”) and Exempt Micro Enterprises (“EMEs”). The company has ensured that these small enterprises were included in the existing procurement value chain of Samsung with a focus on the following, approved areas: Marketing, Services, Sales, Logistics and Recruitment. And, as part of the third phase of the Enterprise Development & E-Waste programmes which was launched towards the end of 2021, a further investment of over R60-million is planned over the next three years.

And furthermore, as part of its contribution to socio-economic development: Samsung has invested in education-focused initiatives that include the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) which teaches 4IR skills including coding and programming, AI, IoT and big data to students in higher learning institutions.

And furthermore, Samsung has over the years ploughed further resources into the global Solve For Tomorrow (SFT) competition that is now in its third year of execution – targeting grade 10 and 11 learners from disadvantage schools across the country to solve community problems through Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). These education-focused initiatives that are driven through technology are a re-affirmation of the company’s commitment to STEM education and the upliftment of underserved communities.

Samsung believes that all these efforts are essential in driving economic transformation in the country and creating a more inclusive and equitable business environment. The seven years of retaining this outstanding Level 1 B-BBEE status is a true reflection of Samsung’s profound, long-term and impactful dedication to transformation which transcends mere compliance.

Samsung Electronics recently commemorated its Foundation Day on November 1, 2024. This year, the festivities extended beyond a single day as all Samsung offices around the world participated in the Samsung Employee Volunteering Programme from 1 to 14 November.

While Samsung was established in January 1969, the company chose its Foundation Day to be November 1 as it was the day when the company merged with Samsung Semiconductor & Communications to form Samsung Electronics in 1988.

The Samsung Employee Volunteering Programme reflected Samsung’s ongoing dedication to making a positive impact in society and empowering communities around the world. It aimed to engage employees, who heeded the call positively, in a wide range of volunteer activities, reinforcing Samsung’s commitment to corporate social responsibility.

In South Africa, Samsung employees took part in the below series of programmes designed to uplift vulnerable communities, fostering meaningful engagement and driving positive change.

Buhlebemfundo Secondary School Painting Project
On November 6, Samsung employees volunteered their time to paint classrooms at Buhlebemfundo Secondary School in Tsakane, Brakpan (east of Johannesburg). This school was a 2023 and 2024 finalist in Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow initiative, which encourages creative problem-solving among students from underserved communities through science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM. The 28-member team of volunteers rolled up their sleeves as they painted and refurbished the entire Grade 8 Block at the school, which included six classrooms in total.

Accelerated Training in Entrepreneurship
From 4 to 8 November, Samsung hosted an Accelerated Training in Entrepreneurship for early start-ups and graduates of its software development skills programme at Tshimologong Precinct in Gauteng and The University of the Western Cape (UWC). This initiative was created to equip the young emerging entrepreneurs with the tools and knowledge to succeed in business. The participants were enrolled in two separate 5-day entrepreneurship boot camps: one hosted at Tshimologong Precinct for 11 beneficiaries, and the other at UWC for 12 beneficiaries. Moreover, Samsung South Africa employees also volunteered their time to share some important skills and lessons with the young up-and-coming entrepreneurs and the topics included finance, legal and compliance, digital and corporate marketing, and sales. At the end of the boot camps, the participants had the opportunity to pitch their business ideas for seed funding to inject into their ventures. Six were selected as the winners (top three from Tshimologong and UWC respectively), and they will receive funding to the tune of R1 million, which will be allocated to support critical operational needs such as equipment, furniture, rental costs, and other business expenses. The seed funding will be distributed by Tshimologong and UWC to ensure it is used as intended and supports the participants’ growth. They will also receive support for a period of six months, in the form of business coaching and mentoring and other non-financial backing.

E- waste Collection Campaign
In a bid to promote environmental sustainability, Samsung South Africa conducted an e-waste collection campaign at the Head Office in Bryanston from 1 to 12 November. Employees were encouraged to bring in their electronic waste for recycling, with collection bins placed in the building. Various electronic devices were collected including laptops, desktop computers, televisions, and mobile devices, printers etc. The collected e-waste, which also included that from Samsung’s service centre and warehouse (fridges, TVs, washing machines etc.), will be donated to Matongoni General Trading, a Johannesburg-based recycler specialising in post-consumer plastic waste and electronic materials. Matongoni will in turn dismantle the collected e-waste into valuable fractions, including plastics and metals, which will be pre-processed and recycled into raw materials for new products.

Lenhle Khoza, Manager: BBBEE & Transformation at Samsung Electronics: “Samsung Foundation Day is not just a celebration of our history; it is also an excellent opportunity for us to make a meaningful impact in the communities where we operate. The Samsung Employee Volunteering Programme provided a unique and special opportunity for Samsung employees get to connect with and support our communities as we foster positive change and empower those in need and improve the environment. The future is truly what we make it and we want to play our part as a corporate citizen, and as individuals. Through these initiatives, we not only gave back but also hope we contributed to stimulating a culture of volunteerism and social responsibility within our organisation and beyond.”

Giving back to the communities is a powerful force that makes our society a better place. Samsung Electronics took the lead in community engagement by hosting the Samsung Sharing Week from November 1 to 14, where employees and volunteers participated in various local volunteer activities.

Samsung has a long-standing dedication to making a positive impact in society and empowering communities worldwide. As part of the activities, employees from Samsung South Africa actively participated in a week-long e-Waste collection project from November 1 to 8, 2024, gathering various electronic devices from their homes, including laptops, desktop computers, televisions, and mobile devices.

While the e-waste collection campaign is a recurring event as part of Samsung’s sustainability efforts, it was done with more gravitas in the seven days as a way to give employees an opportunity to walk the same talk. The collected e-waste, which also included that from Samsung’s service centre and warehouse, will be donated to Matongoni General Trading, a Johannesburg-based recycler specialising in post-consumer plastic waste and electronic materials. This initiative is particularly significant, as The World Counts reports that only 12.5% of e-waste is recycled, with a staggering 85% ending up in landfills.

Matongoni General Trading is a beneficiary of Samsung’s Equity Equivalent Investment Programme (EEIP), a key component of the company’s corporate social investment strategy aimed at fostering socio-economic development. The recycler will dismantle the collected e-waste into valuable fractions, including plastics and metals, which will be pre-processed and recycled into raw materials for new products.

“We are in business in part to contribute to the creation of more sustainable solutions to keep our environment clean and a better contribution to the circular economy. It is in everyone’s best interests to have more awareness about the safe handling of electronic waste. As a waste management and recycling company our biggest goal is to develop and maintain sustainable methods for a greener tomorrow. This is why we are appreciative of Samsung’s endeavours in collecting and donating e-waste to us as they have,” said Gundo Mariba, Key Accounts Manager at Matongoni.

“Samsung is dedicated to environmental sustainability that goes beyond our producer responsibilities,” said Lenhle Khoza, B-BBEE and Transformation Manager at Samsung South Africa. “As outlined in Samsung’s 2024 Sustainability Report, we are on ‘a journey towards a sustainable future,’ and electronic waste recycling is a vital intervention for a better tomorrow. Through this programme, we are making significant strides in responsible recycling and ensuring that potentially harmful materials are kept out of landfills.”

Samsung Electronics remains committed to contributing to a cleaner environment and empowering communities through innovative and responsible initiatives.

In celebration of its Foundation Day on November 1, 2024, Samsung Electronics reaffirmed its global commitment to community service with a series of impactful corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. In South Africa, Samsung marked this milestone by launching several programmes aimed at empowering youth and driving sustainable social change.

One of the key initiatives took place through a strategic collaboration with Tshimologong Precinct in Johannesburg and the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Together, they hosted a week-long Accelerated Training in Entrepreneurship from 4 – 8 November 2024, to equip young emerging entrepreneurs with the tools and knowledge to succeed in business.

The programme was designed for past beneficiaries of Samsung’s software development and technician training programmes and supplemented by young entrepreneurs in the community. A total of 23 participants were selected through a rigorous assessment process conducted by Tshimologong and UWC. The participants were enrolled in two separate 5-day entrepreneurship boot camps: one hosted at Tshimologong Precinct for 11 beneficiaries, and the other at UWC for 12 beneficiaries.

This initiative aligns with Samsung’s commitment to empowering South Africa’s youth by fostering entrepreneurial skills and providing them with the necessary resources to create their own opportunities. The boot camps provided in-depth training in business management, financial planning, and pitching to investors, all designed to prepare participants for success in the competitive business landscape. A handful of Samsung South Africa employees also volunteered their time to share some important skills and lessons with the young up-and-coming entrepreneurs and the topics they covered included finance, legal and compliance, digital and corporate marketing, and sales.

At the conclusion of the boot camps, the participants had the opportunity to pitch their business ideas for seed funding to help get their ventures off the ground. Six were selected as the winners (top three from Tshimologong and UWC respectively) and will receive support in their ventures for a period of six months, in the form of business coaching and mentoring and other non-financial backing. The funding that the six winners are going to receive totals R1 million and will be allocated to support critical operational needs such as equipment, furniture, rental costs, and other business expenses. The seed funding will be distributed by Tshimologong and UWC to ensure it is used as intended and supports the participants’ growth.

The Accelerated Training in Entrepreneurship was created as part of Samsung South Africa’s Equity Equivalent Investment Programme (EEIP), a programme designed to advance local economic participation and support Black-owned businesses. Moreover, it falls within Samsung’s broader Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) strategy, which aims to create sustainable value for South Africa’s economy and empower historically disadvantaged communities.

Lenhle Khoza, B-BBEE and Transformation Manager at Samsung South Africa said through initiatives like this, Samsung continues to invest in young South Africans and help pave the way for a more inclusive and innovative society. “We are thrilled to celebrate Foundation Day in South Africa by helping young entrepreneurs take the next step toward realising their business dreams. By providing both the training and the resources necessary to succeed, Samsung is making a long-term investment in the future of the country’s economy, and we look forward to seeing how these young entrepreneurs will continue to make a positive impact in their communities.”

By Bumsuk Hong, Director: CEO and President, Samsung Africa

Since the dawn of the South African democracy when Samsung entered the African continent through the establishment of the South Africa office, our company has been investing in education-focused Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes for the future, which have now led to positive social changes within the broader African continent.

In our history of Corporate Citizenship in Africa, our CSR activities have been focusing mainly on Education and Skills Development for Employment as well as Sustainability efforts. Our success in the last three decades is also due to our Operational Synergies that were created through our Associations with government institutions and NGOs alike. In the South African context, our CSR programmes are complemented by our already successful landmark multi-million-rand Equity Equivalent Investment Programme (EEIP), which was launched in 2019. Our ten-year plan aims to address key developmental aspects linked to the National Development Plan (NDP) and the overall transformation of the economy.

As a company, we also subscribe to the sustainable development goals of the United Nations Development Plan (UNDP). Our advocacy to the United Nations Development Goals (UNDG’s)* of “Quality Education” and “Reduced Inequalities” aims to improve access to technology, information and communication services for the youth in the continent. For decades, our African operation has been putting great emphasis on the need to empower the youth. We have done this by ensuring that young people contribute greatly to Africa’s Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) agenda and objectives.

To do this, we needed to ensure that the execution of our CSR strategy is linked and focused 100% on education through technology, targeting mostly the young people in the continent. This has, over time had a positive impact on youth within the regional community. As technology suppliers, we understand the importance of 4IR in the lives of the broad youth base in the continent and most importantly; access to new technologies.

*Source: UNDP Report: https://books.google.co.za/books?hl=en&lr=&id=ARtZEAAAQBAJ&oi=fnd&pg=PA89&dq=Managing+inclusive+digital+transformation,+lessons+from+100+countries&ots=Hofj6JhvJI&sig=k2vZvDUf13fZG8zbvgWmfuvp1gM

We have therefore been striving to use technology to develop future innovators for a better world. Our youth in Africa is currently in a positive position to seize the opportunities ahead.

We have undertaken a number of forward-thinking CSR initiatives in order to empower the youth of tomorrow. As a legacy programme of Solve for Tomorrow and Samsung Innovation Campus, Samsung Engineering Academy aimed to address the shortages in technical and engineering skills in the continent by educating the next generation from 2012 to 2020. Hundreds of graduates from countries such as South Africa, Nigeria and more completed the programme successfully, emerging as changemakers to lead innovation for years to come. Additionally, we launched the Women Technical Programme and Boys to Men initiative in South Africa in 2018 to provide technical education opportunities to disadvantaged students, and the Coding Academy in Rwanda in 2021 to equip students with the latest knowledge in coding and software development.

In addition, as an organisation that is well aware of the great importance of education, we have in recent years continued our quest of equipping young people both in high school and tertiary level with the skills and knowledge they will need to build a better world. As a company, we have launched many skills development initiatives aimed at addressing Africa’s digital divide. Over the past few years, we have been able to put technology in the hands of the youth from under-served communities and provided them with smart classrooms in the form of ICT Innovation Hubs or Smart Labs.

These Innovation Hubs or Smart Labs created access to computer literacy, the internet, basic IT and coding skills in remote communities and they included the following:

An investment into an ICT Project where an ICT Innovation Hub was unveiled aimed at benefitting the community in Kwa-Zulu Natal School.

We set up an Innovation Campus (Innovation Hub) in Agona Swedru in the Central Region aimed at leveraging technology to support the dreams of young Ghanaians. In this Hub, we housed a series of coding programmes where young children between the ages of 5-to-17 years in public basic schools in the community were trained on technology and coding.

And furthermore, we donated an Innovation Hub in Lagos, Nigeria.

From the ICT Innovation Hubs, we evolved into the global Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition. As a result, the Solve for Tomorrow competition based on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) was launched for the first time in Africa in 2023.

Recently launched and piloted in 51 schools across South Africa, this programme is providing learners in grade 10 and 11 from underserved communities an opportunity to gain invaluable skills, while solving some of the challenges within their communities. Learners are encouraged to use STEM to find solutions to some of the most pressing societal challenges faced by their communities. The launch event that was held in March was used as a platform to announce the 2023 Top 10 schools who were going through to Phase Two (2).

At this stage, they had an opportunity to tackle a challenge and produce tangible innovations to help improve issues within their communities. With Samsung helping them with resources and mentors guiding them, the learners had to conduct research and develop prototypes for the challenges they had identified. For their efforts, Mbilwi Secondary School from Venda in Limpopo walked away with the first prize, while second place was taken by Maphuthaditshaba Secondary from Acornhoek (Mpumalanga) and in third place, it was Umlazi Comprehensive Tech from Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Through the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) programme, we have successfully partnered with universities of technology including the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in the Eastern Cape and the Central University of Technology (CUT) in the Free State to develop and teach coding, software development, internet of things (IOT) and artificial intelligence (AI) skills to youth from under-serviced communities.

We have further expanded the SIC into other African countries such as Lesotho and entered into partnerships with Lerotholi Polytechnic (LP) as well as the National University of Lesotho (NUL).

There is an upcoming SIC graduation of the first cohort in Lesotho on 03 November 2023. Also, we are currently working on further growing the SIC programme by rolling it out into the rest of Africa, into territories including Kenya, Malawi, Namibia and Nigeria.

Furthermore, some of our successful legacy education programmes that have not only seen youth being empowered and comfortable in the technology space, but also employable with positive ripple effects on their families include the following:

As part of the EEIP, we sponsored a 24-month SETA accredited Air-conditioning and Refrigeration apprenticeship programme which trained about 40 selected apprentices who had never been exposed to technology before. Recently, 38 of these youth graduated as well as two that received certificates of attendance, to work with mentors to grow their skills and address ICT education for SA’s unemployed youth.

In 2020, as part of addressing the country’s critical shortage of technicians to service consumer electronics and hand-held devices, we sponsored a 12-month SETA accredited Electronics apprenticeship programme. Through the EEIP programme, about 41 learners were enrolled in two cohorts for the 1st phase of the programme with the aim of empowering youth from rural areas and townships by equipping them with much-needed skills to land employment or start their own businesses. The programme had broad reach in terms of participants as it has attracted candidates from the north, south, midland and coastal areas of Kwa-Zulu Natal. In 2022, this programme was expanded to include the Eastern Cape .

With these CSR initiatives that are designed to make a difference to all people, we are striving to ensure that students and learners are empowered to ultimately grow and build a better future for themselves, their families and the African community at large.

Samsung’s continued investment in South Africa contributes to Level-1 B-BBEE Status for 5th consecutive year

Samsung has proudly announced that its continued investment in South Africa coupled with its dedication to remain an active contributor to the future of the local economy and strong supporter of economic transformation – has contributed to the company’s Level-1 B-BBEE status for five consecutive years.

The company has achieved this incredible recognition by embarking on many empowerment, entrepreneurial and skills-based projects in the ICT sector in which it operates in. Samsung is augmenting its national transformation policies through Employment Equity, Enterprise Development and investment in education. In particular, the company is building on its landmark multi-millionaire Equity Equivalent Investment Programme (EEIP), which is already celebrating over three years of sustained success.

Launched in May 2019, Samsung’s EEIP programme is expected to have a measurable impact on job creation with a projected contribution of over a billion rands to the South African economy at large. Samsung’s 10-year plan aims to address key developmental aspects linked to the National Development Plan and the overall transformation of the local economy.

The company’s EEIP programme has seen an investment in black, female-owned entities who now operate in the full value chain of e-Waste. Samsung also has a strong focus on enterprise development and capacity building in ICT through scarce skills development.

When Samsung entered South Africa at the dawn of democracy; it placed a great focus on harnessing the power of technology and innovation to effect great positive change in the country. Since then, Samsung has made incredible strides forward in its long-term vision for the country. Samsung is also developing 4IR skills in partnership with a number of institutions of higher learning in South Africa.

The company has launched many skills development initiatives, which are not only created for developing internal employees, but also supporting university students studying in fields within Samsung’s ecosystem and value chain. With wide-ranging support of the country’s youth through bursaries, learnerships and the Samsung Engineering Academy programme, South African youth are gaining artisanal and electronics skills. Samsung is looking forward to a future defined by equality and empowerment for all through these initiatives that have and continue to make an impact across the country and are aimed at developing the youth’s skills-for-employability.

The Solve For Tomorrow competition is a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) aligned educational programmes that encourages learners in grade 10 and 11 from underserved communities an opportunity to gain invaluable skills while solving some of the challenges within their communities. Recently launched, this competition is being piloted in 51 schools across the country. Learners are encouraged to use STEM in finding solutions to some of the most pressing societal challenges that are faced by their communities.

Additionally, the Samsung Innovation Campus programme partners with universities of technology to develop and teach coding, software development, internet of things (IOT) and artificial intelligence (AI) skills to youth from under-serviced communities.

Hlubi Shivanda – Director of Business Operations and Innovation and Corporate Affairs at Samsung South Africa said: “This incredible achievement of the Level 1–B-BBEE Rating for five consecutive years is a re-affirmation of Samsung’s commitment to prioritising B-BBEE as a non-negotiable practice within our businesses. The overarching goal of the country’s B-BBEE programme is the upliftment of the South African economy. As Samsung, we have over the years focused on policies that are designed to empower South Africans in meaningful ways. Our vision for the country is therefore closely aligned with the Government’s B-BBEE policy.”

Samsung’s transformation efforts are a clear indication of the company’s tremendous contribution to the achievement of the country’s overall B-BBEE goals and objectives. The key focus areas of Samsung’s overall B-BBEE philosophy and strategy (excluding the Ownership element, which is subject to EEIP) are centred on the following:

The annual progression of race and gender representation at each occupational level, with specific emphasis on African Male and African Female representation.

Increased focus on both employed learners and unemployed learners, supported by an emphasis on creating work experiences post the learnership/internship period – this is over and above Samsung’s EEIP commitments;

Provision of education support through bursaries, both internally and externally.

Continued focus on development of black talent in the Samsung South Africa business.

Re-directing existing spend to qualifying Black-Owned and Black-Women Owned (BWO) Qualifying Small Enterprises (“QSEs”) and Exempt Micro Enterprises (“EMEs”) to include them in the existing procurement value chain of Samsung South Africa with a focus on the following areas that have been approved – Marketing, Services, Sales, Logistics and Recruitment.

Provision of grant and preferential loan funding to qualifying Enterprise Development beneficiaries, with the possibility of graduating them to become suppliers to Samsung South Africa.

In addition to increasing spend with identified Supplier Development beneficiaries, the qualifying entities may be provided with grant and preferential loan funding; and

Education-focused Socio-Economic Development initiatives through the Samsung Innovation Campus and Solve For Tomorrow competition umbrella as furtherance of the Samsung South Africa’s commitment to the upliftment of underserved communities.

“Samsung knows that it is no small responsibility to realise the country’s long-term goals as this requires collective effort from citizens, corporate organisations and government. At Samsung, we believe that transformation is a business imperative and a requirement for the sustainability of our business. However, we are also convinced that concerted transformation efforts can have incredible socio-economic impact and lasting change in the country’s economy,” added Shivanda.
