JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 04 October 2019 – Samsung Pay, the popular mobile tap-and-pay solution, is proving its worth once again in a big way. A recent article on Mybroadband.co.za has highlighted the seriousness of card skimming, which has risen sharply in South Africa. Conversely, Samsung Pay has seen a dramatic uptake in the past year, having already hit over one million transactions. Innovative services like Samsung Pay prevents criminals from cloning card details and recording consumer’s PINs through concealed hardware on point-of-sale machines.

Samsung Pay negates the need to use a physical card and be susceptible to skimmers. It uses tokenisation from Visa and MasterCard to protect your physical card information, so every time you make a payment your physical card information is never used during the payment process but instead a unique cryptographic sequence is used for the transaction, which changes with every transaction made. Additional protection is provided through Samsung’s government-grade Knox security, already built-in to Samsung smartphones and watches.

Card skimming is expected to increase into the upcoming festive season. It could happen anywhere when using a point-of-sale machine. This means points-of-sale devices, at restaurants or grocery stores, may not be safe. The fact is, it is difficult for consumers to remember to inspect point-of-sale machines for any irregularities every time they pay using their card. This is why South Africans are turning to the security and simplicity of Samsung Pay. It provides the functionality of a bank and loyalty card, which can be used almost anywhere* you can swipe, insert or tap a card.

“Samsung Pay provides peace of mind on an unprecedented level. Additionally, our customers have wholeheartedly embraced the convenience of paying using their ever-present smartphone seamlessly and effortlessly” says Justin Hume, Director: Integrated Mobility at Samsung South Africa.

Samsung Pay supports South Africa’s major banking institutions including Absa, Standard Bank, FNB, RMB, Discovery and Investec and has already hit over one million transactions. Samsung Pay can be downloaded, for free, from the Google Play Store or Galaxy Store depending on your Galaxy device. Once you load your bank cards, paying is always just a quick tap away. It’s convenience on the go. Samsung Pay can be used on the following devices: Galaxy Note 10+, Note 10, Note 9, Note 8, Galaxy S10+, S10, S10e, S9/S9+, S8/S8+, S7/S7 edge, A9, A80, A8, A70, A7 (2017), A5 (2017), A30s, Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Gear S3 and Gear Sport Watch.

* 97% acceptance rate based on local trials for compatible smartphones (NFC and MST). Compatible wearables and smartphones (NFC only) will have a lower acceptance rate.

The loss of a wallet is no longer the worry it was before

Local banks are embracing new ways to pay

Samsung Pay has turned smartphones into convenient digital wallets

It wasn’t that long ago that losing your wallet would have been a complete disaster. After all, you’d lose your bank and loyalty cards, important receipts and even precious pictures of your loved ones. But suddenly, the possession you just couldn’t do without is being replaced by your smartphone. Firstly, we now have countless pics of family and friends safely backed up on our devices and receipts can be easily stored with a simple picture. In terms of the primary use of a wallet, banks have now made it easier to use cardless banking at ATM’s. And then there’s a major revolution in terms of wallet-less payments. The arrival of Samsung Pay in the country in 2018 has turned smartphones into virtually the only payment device you need.

“Samsung Pay has brought South Africans a new level of convenience and security when making contactless mobile payments. Armed with your ever-present smartphone, you can now pay with your smartphone in a way you just couldn’t before. It’s this kind of convenience where technology can make a massive difference in our lives,” says Justin Hume, Director: Integrated Mobility at Samsung South Africa.

A Smarter Way to Pay has Arrived

Samsung Pay is continuing its meteoric rise in popularity and there are good reasons for it. This secure and simple digital wallet instantly gives Samsung Pay supported devices the functionality of a bank and loyalty card, which can be used almost anywhere* you can swipe, insert or tap a card. South Africans are clearly embracing safe and convenient ways to shop and Samsung Pay has provided an effortless approach to it. This success is being sustained through partnerships with major banking institutions including Absa, Standard Bank, Discovery Bank and FNB.

Technology Is Delivering On the Promise of Convenience and Safety

With a bank and even loyalty card, loaded on a Samsung smartphone, paying is as simple as swiping upwards on your screen, authenticate via PIN, fingerprint or iris and hold your phone by the payment terminal. Additionally, Samsung Pay’s security exceeds other mobile payment methods. Through tokenisation from Visa and MasterCard the physical card information is never used during the payment process but instead a unique cryptographic sequence and token is used for the transaction, where the cryptographic sequence changes with every transaction made. That’s a first in South Africa and its welcomed.

Yes, there may be some who still hold on to the familiarity of a wallet, but as time marches on, its replacement, the smartphone, is clearly beginning to play a more important role in our pockets, handbags and hearts.

Samsung Pay can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store and used on the following Samsung devices: Galaxy S10+, S10, S10e, Galaxy Note 9, Note 8, S9/S9+, S8/S8+, S7/S7 edge, A8 (2018), A7 (2017) and A5 (2017), Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy Note 10+, Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Gear S3 Watch and Gear Sport Watch.

* 97% acceptance rate based on local trials for compatible smartphones (NFC and MST). Compatible wearables (NFC only) will have a lower acceptance rate as they can only be used at contactless terminals. Terms and Conditions Apply.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 30 July, 2019 – Samsung Pay, now celebrating its one year anniversary has created a revolution in smartphone shopping in South Africa. Since last year, the innovative mobile payment system has added on a host of banking partners including Absa, Standard Bank, Discovery Bank, Investec and FNB and has already hit over one million transactions. Now, with its most recent software upgrade in July, it introduced Discover Tab, which gives users access to more features and promotions.

“Samsung Pay has redefined what consumers can expect from a digital wallet,” said Justin Hume, Director: Integrated Mobility at Samsung South Africa. “Our ongoing additions such as the Discover Tab takes the convenience even further. Its additional features, promotions, subscription offers and travel deals open up a world of options to users.”

Ever since its launch last year, Samsung Pay has constantly enhanced and upgraded what it offers. The new Discover Tab continues to build on this momentum. Additionally, Samsung is running an 8-week referral promotion, where users are encouraged to refer family and friends for the chance to be in Samsung Pay’s weekly draws, running over 8 weeks. The process is simple and automised:

• A Samsung Pay user goes into Samsung Pay
• They accept the T&C of the referral promo
• The customer gets a unique code that they forward to friends and family
• For every new customer that activates Samsung Pay with the unique code, the customer gets an entry into the weekly draws,
• The referral promo commences 5 August to 29 September 2019.

ABOUT SAMSUNG PAY

With a bank card loaded on a Samsung smartphone, paying is just a swipe, authenticate and tap away. Additionally, Samsung Pay’s security exceeds other mobile payment methods. Through tokenisation from Visa and MasterCard the physical card information is never used during the payment process, but instead a unique cryptographic sequence is used for the transaction, which changes with every transaction made. Samsung Pay also works almost anywhere* you can swipe, insert or tap a card.

Samsung Pay can be downloaded, for free, from the Google Play store or Galaxy Store depending on your Galaxy device. Once you load your bank cards, paying is always just a quick tap away. It’s convenience on the go. Samsung Pay can be used on the following devices: Galaxy S10+, S10, S10e, Galaxy Note 9, Note 8, S9/S9+, S8/S8+, S7/S7 edge, A9, A8 (2018), A70, A7 (2017), A5 (2017), Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Gear S3 Watch and Gear Sport Watch.

* 97% acceptance rate based on local trials for compatible smartphones (NFC and MST). Compatible wearables and smartphones (NFC only) will have a lower acceptance rate. Terms and Conditions Apply.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, 19 March 2018. At the prestigious Product of The Year Awards held in Johannesburg recently, Samsung was the proud recipient of the Category Award for Premium Smartphone for their extraordinary device, the Galaxy S8+. Product of The Year is an organisation that promotes, recognises and celebrates innovation in consumer science. Entrants are measured against stringent criteria and the aim is ensure consumers only receive the very best products on offer.

Justin Hume, Director of Corporate Marketing at Samsung South Africa says, “It’s gratifying to have our exceptional products recognised in this way. We always ensure that the products we bring to the market are designed with people and innovation in mind and the Galaxy S8+ has proven to be an all-round winner and hugely popular with our customers.”

Launched in 2017, the Galaxy S8+ has been lauded for its revolutionary design, which features an Infinity Display that has an incredible end-to-end screen that spills over the phone’s sides, forming a completely smooth, continuous surface with no bumps or angles. It is pure, pristine, uninterrupted glass and it takes up the entire front of the phone, flowing seamlessly into the aluminium shell. The result is a beautifully curved, perfectly symmetrical, singular object.

The 12MP rear camera and the 8MP front camera are so accurate and fast that users won’t miss a moment, day or night. With iris scanning and face recognition, users can ensure that their information is kept secure. Speed is important and the Galaxy S8+ is driven by the world’s first 10nm processor. It’s fast and powerful and increases battery efficiency. Plus, there’s the ability to expand storage, and to work through rain and dust with IP68-rated performance.

Samsung’s virtual assistant, Bixby, completely changes the way users interact with their phones. Bixby is a personal assistant that understands talk, text, and taps so users aren’t confined to one mode of communication.

“Samsung is a leader in innovation and we strive to consistently bring outstanding products to the market. We’re honoured to win the award for the Galaxy S8+ in the Category of Premium Smartphone. The Product of The Year team work extremely hard to ensure all product category winners are really put through the paces. We’re grateful for their hard work and look forward to the next round,” concludes Hume.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, 26 January, 2018 – Smartphones have become the go-to device for everything from business planning and communication to personal social networking and entertainment. When something goes wrong, it’s more than a mere inconvenience, it can disrupt your entire life. To ensure users can seamlessly continue doing life, Samsung now offers an extraordinary service: mobile service vans which will repair specific Samsung mobile devices at customer’s home or office. All that’s required is a simple phone call.

Launched in Johannesburg and Pretoria during December 2017, the service vans are now available in Durban and Cape Town as well. This innovative service applies to the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 devices purchased in South Africa. The process is simple; all customers need to do is call 0860 726 7864. The call centre will establish the repair type required and dispatch a van from the allocated service centre, which will be located within a specific radius from a customer’s home or office. All it costs is R150.00 for the call out fee. Should additional charges apply, customers will be alerted by the service centre allocated to the call out.

Richard Chetty, Director of Services for Samsung South Africa, says, “This is another innovation which affords Samsung users convenience that fits into their lives and enhances their experience of the brand. Service is a vital part of Samsung’s product offerings and are excited about how the mobile service vans are going to positively impact user’s lives.”

The service includes labour and parts as stipulated by the terms and conditions on the device’s warranty card. Service people will assist with device setup, wireless connections, registration of new Samsung products as well as product training on the device for users.

“Feedback from people who have used the service has been incredibly positive. It’s not easy to fit activities like repairs into your daily schedule, and customers love the fact that we’ve removed the hassle factor for them,” concludes Chetty.

Samsung Electronics announced today the launch of SeeColors app for QLED TV, which is compatible with all Samsung QLED TVs. The SeeColors app* for QLED TV helps people with Colour Vision Deficiency (CVD) identify their personal visual deficiencies through the app. Based on individual’s results, QLED TVs, featuring 100% colour volume, adjust the colour settings on the display, allowing viewers with CVD to enjoy a viewing experience with more optimised colours.

“Samsung is committed to making people’s everyday lives smarter and more convenient through technology and innovation,” said Hyeongnam Kim, Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “The launch of SeeColors for QLED TV embodies this mission by providing users with a way to address one of the world’s biggest optical challenges through the latest technologies and visual displays.”

Nearly 300 million people globally have CVD, with approximately 8% of men and up to 1% of women affected**, based on a representative survey conducted in Europe and North America. However, the majority of people with CVD are unaware of their condition and the impact it has on their quality of life.

Through the SeeColors app on the TV, users can identify the type and level of their CVD then directly recalibrate their QLED TV screen based on their personal results. To offer an easy method for people to identify CVD, Samsung Electronics partnered with Professor Klara Wenzel who heads up the Department of Mechatronics, Optics and Mechanical Engineering Informatics at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, to adopt the Colorlite Test, or C-Test, for TV and mobile devices. C-Test, developed by Professor Wenzel, is a digital test that uses the concept of colour filters and mathematical modeling to identify CVD. Adopting the C-Test through the SeeColors app has resulted in a simple solution which gives people with CVD the opportunity to see the world through their QLED TVs in more optimised colour.

The SeeColors app is available for download from the Smart TV App store. Users can also download the app to conduct the test through Google Play and the Galaxy App Store for Samsung Galaxy smartphones S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, S7, S7 edge and S8 devices. Once users connect their Galaxy smartphone to their QLED TV, the TV will automatically adjust the colour setting based on the user’s results.

The SeeColors app is created in partnership with Colorlite®, a Hungarian company that applies certified technology based on 20 years of scientific research to lenses to help people address CVD. The SeeColors app marks the first time Colorlite® is being used on TVs and smartphone devices.

Samsung Electronics has committed to providing a wide range of accessibility features via its innovative products, and its efforts have been recognized with CES Innovation Awards in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Ultimately, when it comes to creating technologies that help users streamline their mobile lives, UX (user experience) marks the spot.

Take the Galaxy S8 and S8+. When designing its latest flagships, Samsung went to great lengths to ensure that the UX behind their groundbreaking, bezel-less designs would foster convenient and intuitive interactions. The result of the company’s efforts is a seamless interface that allows users to navigate the devices’ immersive displays with ease and take full advantage of their powerful features.

The tips and functions outlined below offer simple ways for users to further amplify their Galaxy S8’s convenience and get more out of their smartphone experience.

Get to Know the Navigation Bar

The navigation bar that houses the Galaxy S8’s Home, Back and Recents buttons has a few tricks up its sleeve, including allowing users to bypass their device’s Lock screen and instantly access the Home screen.

After activating the Unlock with Home button feature via Settings > Display > Navigation bar, a hard press of the square Home button from the Always On Display will unlock the device (a swiping motion is not required), while a double-tap will pull up the lock screen. The navigation bar’s settings also allow users to customize the Home button’s sensitivity to avoid unwanted presses.

Users may hide the navigation bar in apps where it does not automatically disappear or fix it to their screen by toggling the Show and Hide button, which appears on the bar’s far left side. The bar’s configuration may also be customized.

Using certain apps and functions may cause the navigation bar to disappear entirely. In those instances, users may navigate back to the Home screen by hard-pressing on the Home button’s usual location, and may access the navigation bar by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.

Take Advantage of the Edge Screen

The Edge panels in the Galaxy S8’s Edge screen offer access to apps, news and key functions with a simple swipe of the side of the screen. Users may customize their Edge panel selection and add more apps and shortcuts that work for them.

The Edge screen’s Edge lighting feature adds additional convenience, notifying users of incoming messages by illuminating the Infinity Display’s edges. This allows notifications to be visible even when the device is facing down, and creates an intuitive means to notify users of messages without disrupting their enjoyment of videos, games and apps.

Users may access the Edge screen’s settings by tapping Settings > Display > Edge screen.

Create Convenient Reminders

Find an interesting article that you’d like to get back to later? The Galaxy S8 allows users to conveniently save URLs using its Reminder function.

With the website pulled up, simply access your browser’s sharing options and tap on the Reminder icon. Webpage URLs are automatically saved, and users may additionally select exactly when they’d like to receive their notification.

The Galaxy S8 also allows users to create reminders based on texts. When viewing a conversation in the Messages app, long-press your selected message until the Message options menu appears and choose Send to Reminder. The message will automatically be saved to the Reminder app, and you’ll also be able to specify if/when you would like the reminder to appear.

In addition, the Galaxy S8 allows users to pin reminders to its Always On Display, making them visible at all times. To do so, open the Reminder app, tap on the reminder that you would like to display and select Pin to Always On Display.

Power Button and Sensor Shortcuts

Sometimes taking the perfect photo requires one to be quick on the draw with their camera.

To help users capture more of their special moments, the Galaxy S8’s camera launches instantly with a double-press of the power key. The camera’s zoom function is similarly seamless, allowing users to easily zoom in or out by dragging the white shutter button to the right or left.

In addition to unlocking the device, the Galaxy S8’s fingerprint sensor allows users to open apps and manage key functions. A simple swipe down or up will show or hide the notification panel, while swiping up on the sensor from the Home screen will launch the Samsung Pay app. The function may be found under Settings > Advanced features > Finger sensor gestures.

In a meeting and can’t answer the phone? With the Galaxy S8, you can politely decline incoming calls with preset text messages.

The Quick Reply feature activates with a two-second touch of the device’s heart-rate sensor and allows users to send a customized response that suits their needs. The function may be found under Settings > Display > Edge screen > Edge lighting > More Options > Quick reply.

Step Up Your Screenshot Game

The Galaxy S8 allows users to snap quick screenshots via a variety of convenient ways.

Users have the option to press and hold the ‘volume down’ and power buttons simultaneously, swipe the screen from one side to the other with the side of their palm, or utilize the Galaxy S8’s Smart Select feature, which is found via the Edge screen and allows you to select an area of the display to capture as an image or GIF.

Located under Settings > Advanced features > Smart capture, scroll capture is another useful option that’s designed to help users snap more complete screenshots. The function appears after a screenshot has been taken and allows for all of an app or page’s scrollable content to be included in the image.

Get More Done with Snap Window

The Galaxy S8’s new Snap Window feature allows users to select a portion of the most recently opened app to pin to the top of their screen.

This means that, for instance, a user may keep an eye on a video or constantly updated content such as stock prices and headlines via the top of their screen while using the remainder of the display to send an email, browse the web or manage other apps.

Activate the feature by pulling up your recent apps and tapping on the function’s corresponding button.

A Fun Way to Unlock Your Phone

After registering their irises for biometric verification, Galaxy S8 users have the option to select a fun mask or background to display when the security feature is activated.

Available designs may be found under Settings > Lock screen and security > Iris scanner > Preview screen mask.

Sharing Links with Samsung Cloud

Samsung Cloud offers users an effortless means to share large video clips and reams of pictures by creating a URL that lets others access your shared media.

The function maintains full picture quality and supports files of up to 1GB in size. Users may save up to 2GB of content per day. After two days, the files are deleted from Samsung’s servers.

To utilize the feature, select the photo or video that you would like to share in the Gallery app, tap Share and choose Link Sharing. The subsequent screen will allow you to select the app you would like to use to send your link.

Users may also provide others with access to shared content by sending a code. Those who receive the code will be able to punch it in to Samsung’s Link Sharing app and instantly view and download the shared files.

There may be over a billion smartphones buzzing in pockets around the world, but not one of them is like yours.

Although we choose from a similar range of models, the reality is that every phone is unique to us as individuals. We pour ourselves into them with apps that simplify our lives, as well as our own memories in the form of photos, videos, music and more.

In today’s world, our phones are an extension of ourselves; many of us would be lost without them. Buying a new device sometimes generates a fear of losing cherished moments on an old phone – but that shouldn’t force us to choose between state-of-the-art design or keeping our memories. We need a solution that lets us upgrade while preserving our most important content.

To make these upgrades swift and worry-free, Samsung created Smart Switch. This easy-to-use service allows you to transfer important content from any phone or OS to your new Galaxy S8, S8+ or other Galaxy device.* In other words, Smart Switch ensures all your cherished digital memories carry over to your new phone, so you can focus on making new ones.

Keep the Content that Matters Most

Today, our smartphones double as cameras, entertainment hubs, personal computers and much more. They’re the first thing we reach for in the morning and the last thing we interact with at night – ever-present assistants that, along with streamlining work and daily life, allow us to keep the content that matters most on hand.

The amount of data we depend on our devices to manage throughout the day can make the idea of upgrading to a new device seem daunting. From that impressive meal you made to a beautiful flower in spring, every memory is a vital part of who you are and the risk of losing a single one may be enough to put pause in your decision.

Not with Smart Switch. The mobile and PC app allows you to instantly make your new Galaxy smartphone more convenient and familiar by seamlessly transferring your photos, videos, contacts, music and more.

That means your carefully curated road trip playlist will make the journey, as will your meticulously planned calendar, work contacts, text messages, go-to apps and even those cherished holiday photos with your family. Key moments in your life will be preserved and transferred with ease and without burdening you with the worry of how to make sure they’re safe.

Easy Upgrades for All

Whether you’re upgrading from an Android, iOS, Windows Mobile or BlackBerry device, Smart Switch ensures that you’ll be up and running with your new Galaxy phone in no time.

Getting started is easy – simply choose which of the three convenient transfer options works for you. You may transfer content directly between your Wi-Fi-connected phones via the Smart Switch Mobile app, tether your old and new devices via USB, or utilize Smart Switch’s seamless computer software.

The software option allows backup using a personal computer. The intuitive interface makes restoring content on a new Galaxy phone swift and easy and provides a simple means for you to conduct firmware updates and back up your new device.

After you’ve established a connection with your new phone via one of the options above, Smart Switch will walk you through selecting the content you’d like to save and initiate a speedy transfer. Once completed, your new device will have the look and feel you’ve grown accustomed to and you’ll be ready to take full advantage of the Galaxy family’s best-in-class technology and services.

Even Better with the Galaxy S8

Those who use Smart Switch to upgrade to the new Galaxy S8 or S8+ will find that Samsung’s latest flagships make managing important data and preserving digital memories even more intuitive. Our services are designed to seamlessly flow between hardware and software, making use of our expertise to deliver the best experience for you.

Smart Switch makes full use of this integration of hardware and software. Paired with Samsung Knox, our defense-grade security software and a diverse range of biometric authentication options available with the Galaxy S8 or S8+, Samsung ensures that your content – from a single text to the largest video – remains secure throughout the entire transfer process.

Don’t let the fear of losing cherished memories hold you back. Upgrade your mobile experience and preserve the content that matters most to you with Smart Switch and the Galaxy S8 and S8+.

*Smart Switch is compatible with the Galaxy S2 and newer devices – including tablets – running Android OS 4.0 and above. Certain devices running Android OS 4.0 and above may not support wireless transfers. Transfers between Android to Galaxy devices performed via USB cable require Android OS 4.3 and above as well as MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) USB support.
