IP Rating

IP, or ingress protection, is a standard that measures a device’s ability to resist the elements. The first digit in an IP rating denotes the level of defense against dust and foreign particles, while the second digit represents the level of safeguard against liquids — the higher the digit, the better the protection. The Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 were the first foldable products to achieve the IPX8 rating, followed by Z Fold4, Z Flip4, Z Fold5 and Z Flip5.

Flex Window

Flex Window, the Cover Screen of a Galaxy Z Flip device, was first included in the Galaxy Z Flip5. The display allows users to take photos, reply to messages or play content without opening the phone.

Flipsuit Case

This is an accessory for the Galaxy Z Flip5 that uses near-field communication (NFC) technology. When a Flipsuit card is inserted into the case, the Flex Window plays content linked to the card.

FlexCam

FlexCam is a camera feature using Galaxy Z 5’s Flex Window and the high-quality rear camera, allowing users to take pictures from various angles without opening the phone. Plus, convenient hands-free shooting is possible when Flex Mode and the Cover Screen camera are activated.

Multi Window

This feature enables users to open multiple windows on the Galaxy Z Fold display, supporting up to three at once. Multi Window offers a multitasking experience to simultaneously perform various tasks such as streaming, shopping, browsing the web and playing games.

Swipe Gesture

Swipe Gesture is a handy feature that lets a user control the Galaxy foldable screen through finger gestures. For example, split the screen horizontally and open a new app by swiping up with two fingers from the bottom to the top. These intuitive gestures enhance multitasking efficiency, providing an optimal way to operate the device.

Ultra Thin Glass

Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) is a crucial component of Galaxy foldable displays. The material’s exceptional thinness allows for flexible bending — at the same time, it possesses scratch-resistant properties, characteristic of traditional glass.

Flex Hinge

The Flex Hinge is the component that allows a Galaxy foldable to be folded and unfolded, enhancing the phone’s durability and enabling the functionality of Flex Mode.

Flex Mode¹

When partially folded, the Galaxy device will go into Flex Mode. Users can set their foldables on a flat surface without needing a separate phone stand to conveniently watch a movie, write an email or video call a friend.

Flex Mode Panel

Flex Mode Panel allows for seamless use of the control panel while enjoying videos, music or other content when the Galaxy foldable is set in Flex Mode. This feature can be activated in Labs.

Taskbar

The Taskbar conveniently presents Favorites and shortcuts to recently used apps at the bottom of an unfolded Galaxy display — allowing users to easily switch between apps and enjoy a seamless multitasking experience, much like they would on a PC.

Under Display Camera

The Under Display Camera (UDC) achieves a truly full-screen display by concealing the Galaxy Z Fold’s camera beneath the screen. With UDC, the front camera is seamlessly integrated to eliminate the need for notches or holes in the display. Samsung initially introduced the cutting-edge UDC technology in the Galaxy Z Fold3 and has continued to implement it in the Z Fold4 and the latest Galaxy Z Fold5.

From their early inception to modern iterations like the Galaxy Z Flip series, these iconic devices have transformed how we communicate, interact and express ourselves. Over the years, the Galaxy Z Flip has evolved from a compact communication device to the ultimate tool for unleashing your creativity — empowering users to unfold a world of possibilities with a simple flip. Samsung Newsroom sat down to detail the journey of how this groundbreaking series pioneered a new era of mobile innovation.

Following the ground-breaking launch of the Galaxy Z Fold, which has taken the mobile landscape by storm, Samsung unveiled yet another revolutionary form factor that took the mobile market by storm. Introducing the Galaxy Z Flip: a device that folded effortlessly in half and could stand upright on its own.

With the Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung revolutionised user interaction by introducing Hideaway Hinge. Much like a laptop, the hinge allowed users to open and position their phones at any angle. Users could securely fold, angle and position their devices, saying goodbye to shaky hands and hello to picture-perfect shots — whether they were snapping a hands-free selfie or capturing a moment with friends.

Also, Samsung released Flex mode, which automatically divided the screen into two when the device was folded. By collaborating with various partners, Samsung optimised this cutting-edge interface and enhanced usability. For example, in the camera app, users could preview the viewfinder on the top while adjusting the camera modes or lenses on the bottom. In addition, the phone supported Multi Window, enabling multitasking by simultaneously displaying different content on each screen.

Continuing the legacy of the Galaxy Z Flip, the debut of the Galaxy Z Flip3 took the series’ design and performance to new heights. The expanded Cover Screen was one of the phone’s most notable upgrades, now four times larger than its predecessor. Going beyond its traditional role of displaying the time and date, the device’s Cover Screen was maximised for both self-expression and productivity. Users could unlock their creativity by customising their Cover Screen with images or GIFs and conveniently view up to eight lines of notifications and messages. What’s more, Samsung Pay transformed Cover Screens into wallets — helping users make payments in one simple step.

The Galaxy Z Flip3 also boasted a variety of camera features that elevated the user’s photography experience to capture and share moments hands-free through Flex mode. With the addition of Auto Framing, the camera detected the location and number of people or objects within the frame and automatically adjusted the format accordingly for photos and videos. Suppose a photographer and the subject of a photo wanted to view the preview of a shot at the same time. In that case, all the user needed to do was tap the Dual Preview button at the top right-hand corner of the screen. Furthermore, users never missed a shot while striking a pose with the enhanced Quick Shot.

Not only could the Galaxy Z Flip3 fit nearly anywhere, but it also offered improved^[1] durability and water resistance^[2]. The lightweight exterior was crafted from Armor Aluminum, the strongest material used in Galaxy devices to date, and Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus®, safeguarding users’ smartphones for any condition. A new protective film placed on the main display improved durability by 80% compared to the previous generation.

In 2022, Samsung released the Galaxy Z Flip4, complete with a host of practical features that effortlessly fit into daily routines. For instance, users could experience the convenience of the Flex mode panel^[3] which opened a touchpad that supports a range of gestures at the bottom of their screen. Similar to the cursor of a computer mouse, users could easily control various elements with a swipe of their finger — pausing, rewinding or playing videos without picking up the device. Another feature that increased productivity was the swipe gesture, optimised for multitasking. For example, if users swiped up with two fingers, the screen split into a top and bottom half to open a new app. With the swipe gesture, Galaxy made frequently used features, such as zooming in and out or turning pages, even faster and more convenient.

The Galaxy Z Flip4 also gave users more control than ever over their pictures. By simply pressing the side button twice, users embraced the Galaxy Z Flip4’s Quick Shot feature to capture moments and selfies without opening their phones. Now, they could even start a video on Quick Shot and easily transition to FlexCam without any interruptions. To capture the starry night sky, users could experience the all-new Nightography mode to take out-of-this-world shots, even in the dark — for bright, sharp photos with less image noise

The Galaxy Z Flip4 effortlessly blended high-performance capabilities with a personalised touch, truly reflecting its owner’s style. When the Bespoke Edition launched, there were new opportunities to express individuality — users could choose from a combination of five glass colours, including Yellow, White, Navy, Khaki and Red, and three frame colour options, including Silver, Gold and Black. Users could also enjoy the Galaxy Z Flip4 for even longer than the previous generation, thanks to its 400mAh larger battery^[4].

This year, Samsung released the Galaxy Z Flip5, delivering the most stylish, unique foldable experience yet. Built for self-expression and complete with an innovative design and customisable functions, the prominent feature is the upgraded Flex Window that is 3.78 times larger than its predecessor’s Cover Screen.

Thanks to the larger screen^[5], the Galaxy Z Flip5 offers more usability than ever before. With Flex Window, users can easily check and control Widgets, including the weather, stock market and music, without ever unfolding their phones. To see all Widgets at a glance, simply pinch the screen to activate the Multi Widget View function. The wider Cover Screen and fully accessible QWERTY keyboard make checking and responding to phone calls and messages even easier.

The new Flex Window provides the most versatile camera experience on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone to date. To snap a selfie with the rear camera, users can conveniently check their smile on the Flex Window before capturing stunning, hands-free photos from creative angles before correcting the colour and tone. The camera-stabilising Super Steady feature also ensures that users take smooth shots on the go. With improved Nightography capabilities to optimise photos in low lighting and digital 10X zoom, users can unleash their creativity anywhere, anytime and at any angle.

Now, there are even more ways to customise your Galaxy Z Flip5 inside and out. For instance, the new Flipsuit Case^[6] is equipped with a changeable NFC card, called Flipsuit Card so users can coordinate their Flex Window design and case design for even more personalisation options.

Behind this seamless integration is the pursuit of innovation by Samsung Electronics and its dedicated employees who have built the foundation for the Galaxy Z Fold to become a mainstay in the mobile market. Samsung Newsroom sat down to detail the journey of the Galaxy Z Fold series, from conception to creation, as it continues to unfold with new features year after year.

In 2019, Samsung’s Galaxy Fold shattered the conventional notion of mobile phones. Featuring a remarkable 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display, this revolutionary device offered users a tablet-like experience right from the palm of their hands. Thanks to its precise hinge technology, the phone could be effortlessly folded like a book, ensuring portability without compromising functionality. This achievement was a result of innovation across all areas, from materials to technology.

The larger screen opened new possibilities for more versatile content viewing. For example, users could split the display into two or three sections based on their preferences. To make multitasking easy, Samsung added the Multi Window feature, allowing users to run multiple apps simultaneously. What’s more, content being viewed on the Cover Screen could continue without interruption when the phone was unfolded. This device brought a whole new level of productivity and engagement that was not possible with other smartphones, inviting users into an entirely new world.

The following year, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold2, an upgraded version of the Galaxy Fold that incorporated valuable user feedback on the foldable experience. The main display was overhauled to maximise user immersion, now boasting a larger 7.6-inch screen with a sleek design that eliminated the notch and left only a camera hole. Additionally, the cover display was expanded to 6.2 inches, significantly enhancing usability on the go.

The Galaxy Z Fold2 also introduced a groundbreaking feature called Flex mode, a unique user experience that divides your screen as you partially fold your phone between 75 and 115 degrees. In addition to this innovation, the camera capabilities were enhanced for even better photos — Auto Framing automatically adjusts the camera’s shooting range by recognising faces and movements, while Dual Preview allows both the user and the subject of the photo to view the preview on the Main and Cover Screen simultaneously. With the combination of Flex mode and these camera upgrades, anyone could now easily become a content creator.

The Galaxy Z Fold2 not only improved multitasking capabilities but also simplified the way users managed multiple tasks on their smartphones. With the improved Multi Window, users have the flexibility to adjust the screen layout based on their needs. They can also smoothly move texts and images between different running apps. Additionally, the App Pair feature eliminates repetitive and time-consuming setups by allowing users to save combinations of frequently used apps and open them together as a single group. These upgrades streamlined multitasking immensely to create a hassle-free mobile experience.

To ensure that users no longer needed to worry about accidental drops or water damage, Samsung’s third-generation foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G, introduced significant durability improvements. Making history for foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G was the first to offer IPX8 water resistance,¹ allowing consumers to comfortably use their phones with wet hands while cooking or enjoy their beach vacations without concern. The main display became 80% more durable than its predecessor through the application of a protective film made from new materials.² By incorporating Armor Aluminum, the strongest material used in Galaxy devices to date, and Corning^® Gorilla^® Glass Victus^®, users’ smartphones were safeguarded no matter the circumstances. In addition, the phone was verified by Bureau Veritas after undergoing rigorous testing to withstand 200,000 folds.³

The Galaxy Z Fold3 5G boasted a stunning 7.6-inch main display that truly shined. The Under Display Camera (UDC) technology places pixels over the camera hole to enhance light transmittance and adjust pixel spacing, resulting in a seamless widescreen experience. Users could enjoy videos, games and other immersive content with a fully utilised display, free from any visual disruptions caused by a camera hole. Moreover, the new display incorporated Eco² display technology, boosting brightness by approximately 29%, to ensure users could experience a remarkably clear display even in direct sunlight.

For the first time ever in the series, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G introduced support for the S Pen Fold Edition, a tool that maximises efficiency when used on a foldable screen. Whether you need to sketch on the screen or quickly jot down notes, the S Pen Fold Edition is readily available. Simply remove it, and you’re ready to go. When you double tap the main display while pressing the side of the S Pen Fold Edition, Samsung Note opens instantly — helping you take notes whether you’re watching an online course or talking on the phone. By offering limitless possibilities for work, study and more, this addition brought a new level of enjoyment and unlocked countless ways to utilise the phone.

The Galaxy Z Fold4 introduced remarkable improvements in both weight and display size. At only 263 grams, the device’s screen featured a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display, while the cover display became wider and shorter to maintain a stable aspect ratio. This design enhancement ensured that users could comfortably type and freely utilise most apps even when the smartphone was folded.

In today’s world, the boundaries between workspaces and non-workspaces have become increasingly blurred, whether you’re at the office, home, coffee shop or park. Recognising this, the Galaxy Z Fold4 elevated its multitasking capabilities to a whole new level. The Taskbar feature, reminiscent of the familiar taskbar layout on PC screens, allows users to add their favourite apps for easy access. This not only simplifies the transition between different app screens but also allows for the intuitive Drag and Drop feature, enabling users to display multiple apps simultaneously. In addition, the App Pair feature works directly with the Taskbar, so users can save even more time.

The added swipe gestures took the phone’s multitasking capabilities even further. With simple finger gestures, users could split the screen or bring up pop-up windows, making it incredibly convenient to view multiple apps on a single display. By dragging a finger from a corner to the center, the current app transforms into a pop-up window. Swiping two fingers from the right, left or bottom splits the screen, displaying the current app on both halves. Furthermore, Samsung’s strengthened support for productivity apps such as Google Chrome, Gmail, Microsoft Office and Outlook, enabling users to effortlessly manage various tasks no matter where they unfold their smartphones.

This year, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold5, the series’ lightest and most groundbreaking foldable yet. The latest addition combines the power of an immersive, large screen with a sleek and lightweight design, offering unparalleled portability at only 253 grams without compromising performance. The Galaxy Z Fold5’s 7.6-inch Main Screen provides an expansive and uninterrupted viewing experience, regardless of whether users are enjoying their favourite videos in portrait or landscape mode.

Gamers will be thrilled by the addition of Snapdragon^® 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, which enhances graphics and uses AI to deliver a next-level gaming experience on the large smartphone screen ever.

Productivity gets a boost with the improved Taskbar, two-handed Drag and Drop and hidden pop-up feature, allowing users to multitask and transfer content between multiple apps with ease. What’s more, the slimmer and more compact design of the S Pen Fold Edition allows users to unleash their creativity anytime, anywhere.

Finally, in line with Samsung’s vision for sustainability, the Galaxy Z Fold5 incorporates a wider variety of recycled materials⁴ — pre-consumer recycled glass and aluminum as well as post-consumer recycled plastics sourced from discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. Even the packaging, made from 100% recycled material,⁵ reflects the company’s mission to lay the groundwork for a better tomorrow.

Galaxy Watch6 series provides meaningful insights that can lead to positive changes around the clock, offering personalized and actionable tips, advice and encouragement. Recognizing that better health begins with better sleep, Samsung is helping users optimize their night in the same way they optimize their day by focusing on three key elements of better sleep: understanding personal sleep patterns, building better habits and establishing a sleep-friendly environment.

Building on leading-edge sleep and wellness features, Galaxy Watch6 series now offers in-depth analysis of Sleep Score Factors [5] – total sleep time, sleep cycle, awake time, plus physical and mental recovery – to help users understand the quality of sleep received each night. More individualized Sleep Messages, co-developed with the National Sleep Foundation, also provide users with detailed feedback about their sleep health each morning. Additionally, Galaxy Watch6 offers Sleep Consistency showing how consistent the user’s sleep and wake times are, and a designated Sleep Animal Symbol representing their sleep type [6].

Enhanced Sleep Coaching enables users to put sleep insights into action with tailored instructions, tips and reminders accessible on both their wrist and paired smartphone. When it’s time for bed, Galaxy Watch6 can help set the perfect sleep environment by automatically changing the settings of connected home electronics [7] and turning on Sleep Mode across the user’s watch and phone [8] to mute notifications, dim screens, and even to activate the invisible LED infrared sensor on the watch to deliver valuable health insights without additional light distractions.

Fitness features get more personalized to keep users motivated throughout their journey. Body Composition [9], with key physical measurements like skeletal muscle, basal metabolic rate, body water and body fat percentage, provides a complete snapshot of the user’s body and fitness, offering a tailored approach to set goals, track progress, and guide through personalized fitness and now nutritional tips via a new partnership with Whisk [10].

A new Personalized Heart Rate Zone feature analyzes individual physical capabilities [11] and defines five optimal running intensity levels to help users set their own goals based on their ability – from burning fat to high intensity workout. In addition to over 100 existing workout trackers, the newly added Track Run records the user’s runs on a track, while Custom Workout allows users to build and track their personalized workout routine.

Added to existing blood pressure [12] and electrocardiogram [13] monitoring, the new [14] feature helps users understand their heart health more comprehensively by checking for heart rhythms suggestive of Atrial fibrillation (AFib) in the background – even while asleep [15]. Galaxy Watch6 can also enable users to track skin temperature during the night to give valuable insights including menstrual cycle tracking [16]. And Fall Detection [17] can gauge a fall, whether occurring during exercise, when standing still, or even while sleeping if users happen to fall out of bed. Once a fall is detected, your watch will automatically alert an emergency service number or pre-selected contacts.

Refined Design, Perfectly Yours

Elevating the wearable experience, Galaxy Watch6 series offers all new designs that provide better viewing, greater power and a wider selection of more customizable and comfortable options3.

Reading and writing is easier on the 20% larger display [18], showcasing more text on screen and a larger keyboard ^[19] – all while maintaining a comfortable size. A more vibrant, higher resolution display boasts a peak brightness of 2,000 nits, coupled with an Always On Display brightness adjustment feature, allowing users to see and do more even under bright sunlight. Powered by the enhanced processor and memory, Galaxy Watch6 delivers smoother and faster interactions3.

Galaxy Watch6 and Watch6 Classic come with a 30% slimmer bezel and a 15% thinner rotating bezel respectively ^[20], enhancing the beauty of the signature circle frame. Galaxy Watch6 series features new stylish, interactive and informative watch faces that make the most of the large display, while new one-click bands allow users to easily mix and match watch bands. With over 704 unique combinations, users can design their perfect watch on For example, a new lightweight Fabric Band [22] and Sleep Coaching watch face pair perfectly to help you gain informative sleep insights in comfort.

Galaxy Watch6 series comes with a larger battery and reduced battery consumption [23] to support its larger and brighter display. With just eight minutes of quick charge, users can add an additional eight hours, perfect for tracking their sleep during the night [24].

Maximizing Your Experience Right From Your Wrist ^[25]

Galaxy Watch6 series brings greater capabilities to the wrist of every user. The new Samsung Wallet [26] on Galaxy Watch6 combines Samsung Pay with Samsung Pass to incorporate more of the user’s wallet – including IDs, event tickets and boarding passes as well as credit cards and membership cards – in their watch. Enhanced Gesture Control allows users to conveniently manage their watch using simple gestures for greater accessibility and ease, letting them set their own shortcuts and now access apps and functions touch-free.

WhatsApp makes it easier for Galaxy Watch users to stay connected with friends and family, all without getting out a phone. Starting from this fall, users can stay productive right from their watch with new apps from Google Calendar and Gmail, which will be exclusively available on Wear OS. They can also track fitness progress or nutritional data more easily with Peloton and MyFitnessPal updates, and coming soon, enjoy additional streaming options with Audible. Additionally, with the introduction of a new Skin Temperature API – a part of the Samsung’s Privileged Health software development kit (SDK) – partners will soon have access to advanced infrared technology for more accurate measurements to bring a whole new world of possibilities to users. A newly launched Thermo Check app takes advantage of the new API, allowing users to measure the temperature of their favorite meal or the ocean before a lap swim, contact-free.

Together with other Samsung devices, Galaxy Watch6 series expands user experiences even further. The upgraded Camera Controller enables remote control of a paired Galaxy Z Flip5 camera [27] to switch modes, angles, and zoom. Samsung Smart TV [28] or Galaxy Tab S9 shows the user’s progress in real time with a guided fitness or mindfulness program on the large screen. Users can also automatically toggle the connection of Galaxy Buds2 Pro between Samsung devices via Auto Switch. Should users happen to misplace their phone, Galaxy Watch6 series can now pinpoint its location through Find My Phone with map support [29].

S Pen Fold Edition[xix] introduced in the third generation Fold in 2021, has also been fine-tuned to deliver a superior writing experience on Galaxy Z Fold5. These features and tools come together to deliver powerful productivity on a large screen and enable users to complete important tasks from anywhere.

The improved Taskbar enables dynamic productivity by allowing users to quickly switch between frequently used apps. Now up to four recent apps are at the ready for more efficient working. Newly enhanced two-handed drag and drop[xx] can also ramp up productivity when moving content between apps and screens. Simply touch and hold an image in Samsung Gallery with one finger and use another finger to open the Samsung Notes app to drag-and-drop the image. With hidden pop-up[xxi], an app can continue running in the background, allowing users to watch video content in full screen and chat with friends in a floating pop-up on the side of the screen.

The new slimmer[xxii] and more compact S Pen Fold Edition[xxiii] makes real-time annotating and ideation easy while being able to fit more comfortably in the pocket. The Slim S Pen Case[xxiv] is nearly the same thickness[xxv] as a regular case for the Fold and available in a variety of styles and colours[xxvi] so users can carry their S Pens in style.

Helping users do more on the go, the 7.6-inch Main Screen[xxvii] provides expansive and uninterrupted viewing so users can enjoy their favorite movie in portrait or landscape. Plus, peak brightness has increased by more than 30%, up to 1750 nits[xxviii], for an optimal viewing experience outdoors even under bright sunlight.

Providing users with an immersive gaming experience on the largest Galaxy smartphone screen, the Snapdragon® 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy[xxix] enhances graphics and uses AI to enable dynamic gaming and multi-game functionality. The Galaxy Z Fold5 can comfortably handle marathon gaming sessions with its advanced cooling system that dissipates heat more intelligently for less lag and no drop in performance.

Samsung continue to demonstrate progress toward the company’s environmental vision and accelerate actions that help achieve its goals, including reaching net zero carbon emissions by the end of 2030 for the Device eXperience Division.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Fold5 feature[xxx] a wider variety of recycled materials[xxxi] than their previous generations, including pre-consumer recycled glass and aluminum and post-consumer recycled plastics, sourced from discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. Even the paper used for their packaging box[xxxii] is made using 100 percent recycled material[xxxiii].

These innovations have also been purposefully designed for optimised longevity. Each device comes with five years of security updates and four generations of OS upgrades, helping to extend the product lifecycle.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 will be available for pre-order in select markets after Unpacked on 26 July 2023, with general availability starting on 18 August 2023.

Last year, I expanded my responsibilities as head of Samsung’s MX Business, to lead our Corporate Design Center. My career as an engineer taught me that the most sublime designs are intertwined with technological innovation.
