Two young ladies from the second cohort of Walter Sisulu University (WSU) students who, through the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC), were the first to graduate

Two young ladies from the second cohort of Walter Sisulu University (WSU) students who, through the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC), were the first to graduate in AI have had the opportunity to share their experience from the programme.

Tshililo Mungoni, a 21-year old female student originally from Limpopo but resides in Johannesburg, was very eager to pursue her passion for technology. She followed her interest by enrolling at WSU and majored in Software Development. During her time there, she actively participated in hackathons and IT Society in an effort to hone her skills and expand her knowledge.

When she found out about the WSU-SIC programme, she was very interested. Tshililo said that she signed up for the programme to learn about Python and AI. This is because she was well aware of the list of high-demand jobs in the local market. The opportunity to learn ICT skills from this WSU-SIC programme and earn recognised certificates was highly appealing to her. Tshililo was lucky enough to be taught by some of WSU’s most experienced instructors and mentors who were able to offer her a structured, guided and supported learning approach.

During the programme, she learnt the fundamentals of Python programming and gained a solid understanding of AI concepts such as machine learning and neural networks. Tshililo who acquired high-demand ICT skills and graduated in February this year, has already secured an internship opportunity as a Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst with a company that is based in Sunninghill, Johannesburg.

She expressed how grateful she is for the opportunity and the skills that she’s obtained from the WSU-SIC programme. Tshililo believes that her experience in the programme prepared her for her current work environment. She is now able to apply the technical skills in Python that she learnt from the programme, in real work scenarios. And with her certificates from the WSU-SIC programme, she is now also able to showcase her proficiency.

For Tshililo, the programme did not only allow her to gain practical experience but it also opened doors for further advancement in the IT industry. Her future plans she said: “involve studying further and expanding my knowledge in Business and Data Analysis as well as potentially pursuing more opportunities in this field.”

Another young and bright 22-year old who is born and bred in East London, Somila Mdletshe comes from a diverse background with a passion for technology and innovation. Even before joining the WSU-SIC programme, Somila had a keen interest in AI and its applications in various industries.

Somila signed up for the programme because she was fascinated by Coding and Artificial Intelligence especially, and its potential to drive positive change. She saw the programme as an opportunity to deepen her understanding of the field and acquire practical skills that would enable her to make meaningful contribution in society.

She believes that the WSU-SIC programme has empowered her with valuable skills and knowledge that she can apply to solve real-world problems. For example, she is already using AI and data analysis techniques to optimise processes in her family’s business. Also, she is convinced that she can use her skills to contribute to community projects that can benefit from technological advancements.

Throughout this programme, she added: “I’ve learned a wide range of concepts and techniques, from basic coding, machine learning and neural networks to data analysis and natural language processing. I’ve also developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential in the fast-paced world of technology.”

First AI Graduation in Africa to Help Increase Employment Opportunities in Eastern Cape

Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in collaboration with Samsung are proudly hosting an award ceremony in Mdantsane for the second cohort of 25 students who – through the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) – are the first in Africa to graduate in Artificial Intelligence (AI) education, with the ultimate aim of curbing unemployment in the Eastern Cape.

Since the dawn of democracy when Samsung entered the African continent through the establishment of the South African office, the company has been investing in education-focused Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes for the future, which have now led to positive social changes within the broader African continent. This WSU-SIC programme is one of the ways that Samsung is commemorating SA’s 30-year anniversary of democracy.

In the recent state of the nation address (SONA), the President said: “While economic growth is essential to reduce unemployment, we cannot wait to provide the work that many of democracy’s children need. Having a job does not only provide an income – it is fundamental to people’s sense of self-worth, dignity, hope, purpose and inclusion.”

This year’s graduation in both C&P and AI education, specifically, is very significant as it fits perfectly into Samsung’s current AI technology strategy and vision. Importantly, two female graduates from WSU’s East London campus who are deeply passionate about the potential of technology had this to say about their experience in the programme.

Somila Mdletshe, 22-year old female student who’s born and bred in East London said: “My time exploring Artificial Intelligence has been profoundly impactful, providing me with essential skills and invaluable insights that I am excited to apply in the future. With this WSU-SIC programme, I feel like I’ve embarked on a journey of learning, growth and discovery; and I have absolutely no doubt that the impact of the collective efforts will be felt for years to come.”

This new group of graduates that come from Mdantsane township and various areas of South Africa are now part of the full programme that seeks to boost youth employment in the technology sector by empowering them with Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) skills in the field of AI, C&P and Internet of Things (IOT). Last year, a group of 21 students were inducted to kickstart the C&P programme and 19 of them graduated.

Tshililo Mungoni, 21-year old female student originally from Limpopo, but resides in Johannesburg said: “My coding journey at WSU Samsung Innovation Campus has been transformative, equipping me with skills and a new career path in Business Intelligence (BI) & Data Analysis. We had hands-on project and practical experience, which has allowed us the opportunity to apply Python in real-world scenarios and gain tangible skills in data visualisation tools and techniques. I am honoured to be part of this innovative community.”

Fostered through the institution’s Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator (CfERI), this graduation is further evidence that this partnership between WSU and Samsung has indeed brought this one of a kind programme that aims to continue offering the much-needed skills in basic C&P as well as AI education to the province’s youth. For these partners, the priority and measurable impact for this programme continues to be the absorption of these students into employment, however this youth is also encouraged to consider opportunities as entrepreneurs in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Lenhle Khoza, B-BBEE and Transformation Manager at Samsung said: “As a global technology giant, we have long recognised the significance of AI and how it has rapidly emerged as one of the most prominent, future technologies. Our collective quest of seeking to provide education through the latest and most advanced technology is essential in keeping the youth abreast and well-educated in the most relevant, emerging technologies in the world.”

And furthermore, both parties are pleased with the overall, profound effect that this programme has had on these graduates. Stats do not lie: the student’s technology capability growth rate is now sitting at 69% compared to when the programme started. Also important to note is that, none of the students from this second cohort have dropped out of the programme, the attendance rate was 96% and 100% of them are graduating.

Dr Thobekani Lose at WSU said: “As an institution that is proudly celebrating a second group of students that are graduating in 4IR skills – we understand the importance of teaching and leveraging AI in the country’s education. Samsung’s continued investment and its partnership with our institution is of utmost importance because it ensures that we are training our students to use AI tools and platforms effectively, ensuring that they can maximise the benefits of these new and emerging technologies in their future careers.”

Importantly, Dr Lose believes that, one day, the theoretical education combined with the practical skills imparted to these students during this SIC programme will enable them to make a meaningful contribution, not only in their jobs or businesses but also in society as a whole.

“As Samsung, we are thrilled that our global initiative that is aimed at empowering the leaders of tomorrow and equipping them with 4IR skills, in particular AI needed by the ICT industry and the local economy; is indeed starting to fulfil the need to realise meaningful change,” concluded Khoza.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has announced the launch of the new Less Microfiber Filter, an external washing machine filter designed to significantly reduce plastic microfiber emissions during laundry cycles. Designed with inspiration from apparel maker Patagonia and expertise from the global ocean conservation organisation Ocean Wise, the filter builds on the success of last year’s Less Microfiber Cycle to substantially cut microplastics and enable sustainable laundry washing that is both effective and effortless. The new filter is now available in Korea and the U.K., and will roll out to other countries in the third quarter.

“With microplastics emissions to our oceans continuing to increase and regulations being strengthened in many countries, as well as microplastics becoming a growing health concern for people everywhere, Samsung worked with Ocean Wise and Patagonia to engineer technology to prevent the release of microplastics from our daily life,” said Moohyung Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D Team of Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “With innovations like the Less Microfiber Filter and Cycle, Samsung is enabling Everyday Sustainability in a wider array of products and making eco-conscious daily practices second nature in the home.”

To enable customers to cut microplastic emissions from their laundry, Samsung first developed the Less Microfiber Cycle, a wash course that reduces microplastic shedding by 54%[1] in part by leveraging Samsung’s proprietary Ecobubble technology. By using bubbles to help dissolve and absorb detergent, less heat and energy is required to wash clothes, resulting in reduced abrasion which in turn prevents microplastic emissions.

The Less Microfiber Filter takes this a step further, preventing up to 98%[2] of microplastics released during laundry from escaping into the ocean, equivalent to eight 500ml plastic bottles per year[3] when used four times a week. In addition, to help more customers get involved in cutting microplastic emissions, the Less Microfiber Filter has a mountable design style that allows it to be used with standard washing machine models, demonstrating the company’s dedication to long-term sustainability and helping customers embrace sustainability at home. To verify the technology’s efficacy and its sustainability features, both Cycle and the Filter were independently evaluated by Ocean Wise using a peer-reviewed microfiber shedding test protocol at the marine organisation’s state-of-the-art lab in Vancouver, Canada.

Sustainable Convenience Every Day and at Every Stage of the Product Lifecycle

Samsung is committed to developing new products and technologies for a sustainable future. As we strive to enable Everyday Sustainability, not only should these products be highly effective, they should also be simple, accessible and convenient to use while considering eco-conscious practices in each aspect of product development.

With this in mind, the Less Microfiber Filter is made using recycled plastics – to help incorporate sustainability at every stage of its lifecycle – and was designed to be long-lasting and easy to maintain. The filter’s blades capture the microplastics with a 65-70 micrometre wide mesh, then redirect and compress these microplastics to one side, meaning the filter only needs to be cleaned roughly once a month.

By connecting with Samsung’s intelligent connectivity platform SmartThings, the filter tracks how full it is from 0 to100%, alerting users when cleaning or other troubleshooting is required via the SmartThings app. The Less Microfiber Cycle, meanwhile, is available as a preset option on select Samsung washing machines from 2022 and can be activated with just the press of a button. It will be expanded to users of previous Wi-Fi enabled Samsung washing machine models through an over the network update this year.

Innovation for a Brighter Future

The development and launch of the Less Microfiber Cycle and Filter are just the latest steps in Samsung’s sustainability journey.

“We’ve been investing in microfiber research for many years, learning how to reduce the fibers that shed from our garments and contribute to the various sources of pollution in the ocean,” said Matt Dwyer, VP of product impact and innovation at Patagonia. “We applaud Samsung for joining us in taking this major step forward in the fight against microfiber pollution.”

Beyond the launch of the Less Microfiber Cycle and Filter, Samsung will continue developing new technologies and products that make Everyday Sustainability an effortless part of daily life for customers everywhere and continue to work with partners to deliver tomorrow’s eco-conscious household solutions.

Following the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), Lesotho’s Lerotholi Polytechnic (LP) and Samsung South Africa launched the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) in a bid to boost youth employment in the technology sector. The SIC main aim is to coach the Maseru based institution’s student community on the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) skills and also prepare them for their possible careers as entrepreneurs in technology.

Lerotholi Polytechnic’s Rector, Prof. Spirit Tlali, said, “This strategic partnership is exactly what our institution needs at this time. It is also a much welcome opportunity for our students as it will give them the necessary skills to make a meaningful contribution in the technology-driven revolution the global community finds itself in right now. A partnership such as this one, with a global technology giant like Samsung is something no institution of higher learning can ignore. We are fortunate and proud to be able to facilitate this for our students and to help them get ready for the exciting field of work.”

After being introduced in South Africa earlier in 2022, the programme has already been launched in two South African tertiary institutions. With a low volume and high impact approach, the SIC’s courses include Coding and Programming, Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data. LP will undertake the training and assessment of the students in line with the content provided by Samsung.

Samsung holds the belief that the future of any country lies in the hands of young people and that education gives them the greatest chance to realise their full potential and prepare themselves for that future. This is why Samsung is deliberate in working to equip young people with the skills and knowledge they will need to build a better world. The company is committed to empowering the youth with the tools they will need to drive and effect meaningful change.

Hlubi Shivanda, Director: Business Operations and Innovation and Corporate Affairs at Samsung South Africa said, “Samsung is heavily invested in the development of people and communities and we believe that that can only be achieved through working together with others. We are driven by bringing about positive social change and building a better world for all, not just through our products and services, but also by creating opportunities for learning and growth. The Samsung Innovation Campus aims to provide an opportunity to deserving youth from under-served communities to gain skills that combine future core technology capabilities with soft skills and job preparation. We are confident that the programme will open many doors for the beneficiaries and that our partnership with the institution will continue to grow as it empowers the youth.”

As specialists in providing quality academic, technological and career-orientated programmes that provide relevant skills development in rural and urban areas – WSU is now placing special emphasis on entrepreneurship. The WSU-CfERI, provides an opportunity for WSU students, local youth entrepreneurs, and WSU alumni to nurture, sustain and grow business ideas as well as small and emerging businesses in the province. The introduction of the WSU-CfERI serves as a responsive mechanism to the high levels of unemployment as it addresses the challenges experienced in the rural and disadvantaged communities.

Hlubi Shivanda, Director: Business Operations and Innovation and Corporate Affairs at Samsung South Africa said: “The Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) aims to empower a generation of problem-solvers by equipping them with future-proof skills and giving them practical understanding of the technologies that will shape their future and enrich sustainable growth of the world.

“As Samsung, we are aware of the great importance of education – this is why we have formed this strategic partnership with WSU to equip young people with the skills and knowledge they will need to build a better world. Through our Global Samsung Innovation Campus initiative and this partnership with WSU, we are committed to empowering the leaders of tomorrow and equipping them with the tools they will need to realise meaningful change,” Shivanda adds.

Samsung and the Walter Sisulu University launch the Samsung Innovation Campus to contribute to SA’s Youth Employment and 4IR Agenda

Walter Sisulu University (WSU) and Samsung South Africa recently launched the WSU-Samsung Innovation Campus in a bid to boost youth employment in the technology sector. WSU and Samsung fostered this twinning agreement through the Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator (CfERI) to coach the WSU student community on the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) skills. Since it is the WSU norm to form partnerships with various organisations, through the Directorate For Short learning programmes (DSLP) – WSU forged to embark on this strategic partnership with Samsung.

Dr Thobekani Lose at WSU says: “This partnership came as a result of various engagements, a sealed deal and a signed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between WSU and Samsung. This WSU-Samsung Innovation Campus is one of its kind in South Africa and is a flagship partnership with Samsung to contribute to the national imperative of creating work-ready employable students.”

An initial cohort of 21 students was inducted to kick-start the programme, whose main objective is to target the youth who are within the university and develop their 4IR skills and empower them as future technological entrepreneurs. The WSU-Samsung Innovation Campus will offer basic coding and programming education in the first year of this agreement.

Samsung believes that young people are the leaders of the future. And while the future might be full of challenges and uncertainties, education is what allows youth to realise their full potential and prepare themselves to keep moving forward with confidence. Well aware of the great importance of education, Samsung works to equip young people with the skills and knowledge they will need to build a better world. Through its global Samsung Innovation Campus initiative, Samsung is committed to empowering the leaders of tomorrow and equipping them with the tools they will need to realise meaningful change.

Hlubi Shivanda, Director: Business Operations and Innovation and Corporate Affairs at Samsung South Africa says: As Samsung, we are very firm in our belief that every young person deserves quality education regardless of their background, gender, ability, or personal circumstances. Over the years – through partnerships such as the WSU-Samsung Innovation Campus – we have empowered a countless number of young people to slowly but steadily contribute towards positive change in their societies and the country’s economy at large. This partnership with WSU is therefore no different – our commitment to empowering the youth and contribute to the country’s 4IR and employment goals remains.”

Samsung hosts media to introduce them to the latest products and technology in home appliances JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 18 October 2022 – Samsung

Samsung hosts media to introduce them to the latest products and technology in home appliances

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 18 October 2022 – Samsung hosted a lunch and interactive session for members of the media at their head office’s Experience Centre in Bryanston. The purpose of the event was to introduce journalists to the company’s home appliances and get them acquainted with some of the standout technological innovations and features that make them special.

Samsung South Africa’s Home Appliances Lead, Mark Mackay and his team played host to the journalists and gave them a tour of the Experience Centre, which houses a collection of the latest Samsung products from mobile to entertainment as well as home appliances.

The interactive lunch session kicked off with Mackay setting the tone and sharing with the guests Samsung’s vision of enhancing the quality of life for consumers through their products. He said the South African market for premium home appliances has been growing rapidly in recent times. “Two of the key driving components of this segment have been performance and personalisation. At Samsung, we have responded to this the best way we know how and upped our game in terms of the innovative features that our products offer.”

The guests were introduced to some of the innovation and exceptional technological features found in the latest refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, air-conditioners, air dressers and washing machines etc.

Mackay spoke about Samsung’s BESPOKE and highlighted that for products of this standard, consumers should be able to have them in the shape or form that they choose. “We have placed personal taste at the centre of our products because there shouldn’t be any reason two consumers find themselves with the exact same product. We listened and responded and the result is that our consumers can now tailor their appliances, be they kitchen, cleaning or laundry, to their own individual tastes and preferences.”

With a fridge for instance, a customer can choose how they want both the form and function to be. In other words, what they want the outside to look like and the colours of the panels used and the functions inside, in terms of the fridge’s set up.

Mackay talked about one of the features and reasons why Samsung appliances perform efficiently – Digital Inverter Technology (DIT). “DIT is the innovative technology that we put into our appliances to make them perform efficiently and reduce energy consumption. The secret lies in the inverter, which is responsible for controlling the speed of the appliance’s motor. Whether it’s the cooling adjustments needed in your fridge to keep your food fresh for longer or the washing or drying of your clothes in the washing machine, DIT is the technology that makes our products energy and cost-efficient. Just how confident are we in this technology? We give a 10-year guarantee on it,” said Mackay.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 18 June 2021 – These days we all have smartphones and other electronic devices we no longer use because they’re outdated or broken. Unfortunately, more often than not, these devices and its components can end up in trash and landfills. In fact, more than 50 million tons1 of electronics are thrown away each year and a mere 17 percent is eventually recycled. In keeping with its mission to reimagine a better planet, Samsung is committed to ensuring that more devices are responsibly recycled.

Driven by a desire to keep our planet clean for generations to come, Samsung regularly engages in eco-conscious efforts that are helping to establish a circular economy. The company is constantly exploring ways to reduce its products’ impact on the environment, including increasing product lifespans and spearheading efforts to recycle their resources. This is essential as most ‘e-waste’ ends up polluting the environment by sitting in landfills or being incinerated. With annual e-waste expected to reach as much as 74 million tons by 2030, it is undeniably the time to take steps to reduce consumption and minimise waste. Repairing old devices, on the other hand, saves energy and finite resources that would otherwise be consumed in the manufacturing of new products, which carries considerable negative impacts on the environment. The reality is that a disproportionate negative impact to the environment comes from smartphones, as they have a relatively short average useful lifespan of only two years. This is why Samsung has designed initiatives aimed at alleviating the impact on the environment.

Samsung South Africa has implemented a popular trade-in programme that makes a difference. You can trade-in over 6 000 Samsung and non-Samsung eligible devices, such as laptops, mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets and many more and it would be responsibly disposed off. Additionaly Samsung repair or replacement process, is designed as such that electronic components and products are collected, checked, recorded and stored at Samsung warehouses. Identified e-waste is pre scrapped to ensure no unauthorized reuse in substandard repairs and irresponsible disposal thereof. Waste is collated on a weekly or monthly basis. Hereafter, Samsung’s authorised recycling and scrapping partners collect all waste, recycle and dispose of the materials in the prescribed and governed processes to minimize waste to landfill. Finally, a scrapping certificate is issued by the partner as guarantee that material is responsibly disposed of.

“It is an essential part of Samsung’s mission to put the environment first in all business operations, with several long-term sustainability programmes that include sustainable packaging design and the reduction of carbon footprints through the use of recycled materials. Critically, the positive impact on the environment will result in lasting change that benefits all South Africans. The fact is, all positive changes start with the determination to reimagine old ways and to do what’s right for all. We’re reimagining environmental sustainability into everything we do from packaging to product design, energy consumption to recycling,” says Hlubi Shivanda, Director: Business Innovation Group and Corporate Affairs at Samsung South Africa.

Additionally, Samsung has a long-term vision for conserving the country’s natural resources, while at the same time playing a role in job creation. As part of Samsung’s R280-million Equity Equivalent Investment Programme (EEIP), under the Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment that was launched in 2019, Samsung, in collaboration with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), embarked on an initiative to provide opportunities for Black Industrialists in the recycling sector. Through this initiative, Samsung has become an integral partner in the creation and support of black-owned businesses that can manage and impact Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment.

Samsung believes in a better, greener tomorrow and that all things can be repaired, recycled, upcycled and renewed. Now is the time where technology and innovation can be used to solve environmental problems, not add to them. Together, we can create a greener Galaxy.

1 According to the Global E-waste Monitor 2020 by Global E-waste Statistics Partnership (GESP), the amount of electronic waste in 2019 was 53.6 million metric tons (Mt).
