Samsung is urging South African Galaxy users to activate the latest anti-theft and anti-robbery features now available on Galaxy devices. These updates form part of Samsung’s ongoing commitment to smarter, tougher mobile security, giving users more control over their data, even in high-risk situations like smash-and-grabs or pickpocketing in busy taxi ranks, bus stops/stations, and other public areas.

The latest security enhancements come via Samsung’s One UI 7 update, which was introduced with the Galaxy S25 series earlier this year and is now being rolled out to a broader range of devices across the Galaxy ecosystem. South Africa continues to grapple with high mobile phone theft rates, especially in urban areas like Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town. Whether it’s phones being snatched from hands at traffic lights, lifted at taxi ranks, or stolen in the dark or load-shedding-induced house robberies, Galaxy users now have new ways to protect their personal data.

Samsung’s new Theft Protection suite builds on existing Android security and introduces advanced layers of protection, even in cases where criminals might have access to your PIN or try to disable your device. Galaxy users can now enable a range of new security measures, including Identity Check, designed to offer stronger protection in complex theft scenarios. These features respond automatically and intelligently to suspicious activity, helping ensure that personal data remains secure and under the user’s control in these critical moments.

Existing and updated features in Theft Protection include:

Theft Detection Lock: This uses machine learning to detect motions associated with theft such as snatching, and instantly locks the screen to stop unauthorized access.

Offline Device Lock: The screen gets automatically locked if the device is disconnected from the network for an extended period, ensuring protection even when the device is offline.

Remote Lock: If the device has already been stolen, users can lock it remotely using their phone number and a quick verification step. Remote Lock also allows users to regain control of their account and explore additional recovery options.

New Anti-Robbery features released on One UI 7 include:

Identity Check: In unfamiliar locations, the ‘Safe Places’ feature requires biometric authentication for any changes to sensitive security settings, adding an additional layer of protection when a PIN may have been compromised.

Security Delay: A key component of Identity Check, it triggers a one-hour waiting period if someone attempts to reset biometric data. This crucial buffer gives users time to lock the stolen phone from a connected device, such as a PC or tablet, before unauthorized access can occur.

These updated theft features are now becoming available on previous flagship devices, starting with the Galaxy S24 series, Z Fold6, Z Flip6, Z Fold5, Z Flip 5, S23 and S22 series, with future updates planned for even more Galaxy smartphones.

Further steps to take if your Samsung Galaxy device is lost or stolen

How to remotely lock your Samsung Galaxy device:

Sign into Samsung Find using your Samsung account

Samsung Electronics today announced the One UI 7 beta program,1 opening an advance look at fortified, Samsung Galaxy-exclusive security measures. At every layer, the latest One UI protects personal data while providing all types of users with choice, transparency and integrated security settings — because in the era of AI, there is no privacy without holistic security.

Knox Matrix Unlocks Ultimate Transparency

Knox Matrix is Samsung’s vision for the future, enhancing protection through multi-layered, intelligent threat monitoring between connected Samsung devices. One UI 7 sets the foundation for the next frontier of security.

Knox Matrix monitors devices through Trust Chain, a secure private blockchain — and the new Knox Matrix dashboard introduces an easier way to maintain transparent security across a connected device ecosystem. With One UI 7, it’s more intuitive than ever to check the security status of multiple Samsung smart devices, including Galaxy mobile devices, TVs and home appliances, at a glance. When all connected devices are up to date and no risks are detected, they will show as ‘green,’ or secure. Users can also see if a device is at risk, and the dashboard will prompt an actionable recommendation to mitigate the threat.

A new recovery method for Enhanced Data Protection adds ease and convenience to the process of retrieving data stored on Samsung Cloud. Enhanced Data Protection keeps connected devices synchronized and secure, also ensuring that if access to a trusted device is lost, users have a backup plan to prevent the loss of their data. With One UI 7, users can now transfer recovered, private data to a new device by verifying the lock screen factor — whether pin, pattern or password — of their previous device.

As part of Knox Matrix’s Credential Sync, Samsung has developed new ways to manage and secure identities and credentials for today’s hyperconnected world in the form of passkeys.2 With One UI 7, users can now create and use passkeys to log into their Samsung Account. As digital authentication credentials, passkeys enable a faster, easier way to securely log in to apps, devices and websites — so users can safely sign into their TVs, AI Family Hub refrigerator and more, simply by using the fingerprint sensor on their smartphones.

Maximum Restrictions Boost User Control

Maximum Restrictions establishes a powerful line of defense against today’s cyber threats. One UI 7 further enhances user choice with new features designed to protect those who may need additional safeguards. Maximum Restrictions has been updated with added controls for network connections so users can enjoy the peace of mind that comes from boosted protection without losing access to key device functionalities. Thanks to the added controls, users have the choice to block 2G service and prevent data from being intercepted when connected to potentially unsafe networks. Users can also prevent unintended automatic reconnection to certain Wi-Fi networks3 that may be less secure, ensuring data remains private while still having the option to connect manually if desired.

This update enhances Maximum Restrictions’ existing suite of protections for Samsung Messages and Samsung Gallery, which allows users to remove location data in shared photos, prevent automatic attachment downloads and block hyperlinks, previews and shared albums.

More Security Settings Bring Added Device Protection

One UI 7 introduces even more ways users can adjust security settings to best suit the ways in which they use their device. Users can choose to block USB connections to prevent any other access through the USB port while the device is locked, except for battery charging.

To protect against malicious apps that come from sideloading, One UI 7’s new Safe Install system works alongside Auto Blocker to send a warning when a user attempts to download from an unauthorized source, alerting them of security risks and preventing unintentional sideloading on Galaxy devices worldwide.4

Theft Protection Enhances Data Privacy

One UI 7 introduces new features available only on Galaxy devices to the Android suite of theft protection solutions, enhancing the safeguards in place to ensure personal data remains secure even when devices are lost or stolen. In addition to Theft Detection Lock,5 Offline Device Lock and Remote Lock, Galaxy users can now leverage additional security measures in Identity Check, an opt-in feature designed for when a device’s PIN becomes compromised. If suspicious activity is detected, users can rest assured that these Galaxy-exclusive protections will kick in.

When in an unfamiliar location, biometric authentication will be required to make any changes to important security settings that could put personal information at risk.

As an added safeguard, a one-hour security delay will prevent unauthorized users from making any immediate changes to the device.

One UI 7 is the next step in Samsung’s commitment to privacy on AI, introducing advanced security features to ensure complete protection in the era of AI. The official One UI 7 release will commence with upcoming Galaxy S series devices, featuring additional AI capabilities including enhanced, hardware-dependent on-device AI functions, starting from the first quarter of 2025. In line with Samsung’s commitment to extend its OS upgrade policy, the update will gradually roll out to other Galaxy devices.

The One UI 7 beta program will be first available for Galaxy S24 series devices in Germany, India, Korea, Poland, the U.K. and the U.S., from December 5. Galaxy S24 series users can apply to join the beta program via Samsung Members.

How Samsung Knox evolved to protect users worldwide and how the company is now ushering in a new era for device security Samsung Electronics’ Samsung

How Samsung Knox evolved to protect users worldwide and how the company is now ushering in a new era for device security

Samsung Electronics’ Samsung Knox security platform is 10 years old! Named after one of the most heavily guarded places, it was first introduced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in 2013.

That is a decade of cutting-edge mobile protection for users around the world, during which Samsung Knox evolved into a holistic security platform synonymous with safeguarding billions of consumers and businesses. And now, Samsung is addressing the next frontier of device security with Knox Matrix.

Bringing Security to an Increasingly Connected World

Knox Matrix is Samsung’s vision for a future where devices connected in an ecosystem can protect each other – as well as their users. It is a comprehensive approach to security, which will become increasingly essential as more devices and aspects of our lives become connected.

Many users around the world already own an array of connected devices, from mobile devices and TVs to refrigerators and robot vacuum cleaners. The presence of over 14 billion connected devices on the market demonstrates the vastness of this landscape, which shows no signs of shrinking.

Samsung is aware that despite the benefits, increased connectivity has the potential to lead to more exploitations. Traditional security infrastructure that protects single devices will be unable to keep up, as one compromised device stands the chance of impacting others within the same ecosystem. Knox Matrix will address this challenge through a revolutionary concept that paves the way for multi-device security for mobile phones, TVs, home appliances, and more.

Samsung devices that are empowered with Knox Matrix work to protect one another in a trusted network. If one element is compromised, Knox Matrix will isolate it from the ecosystem in order to protect the others. Having Knox Matrix supported across devices can effectively turn a smart home into a smart shield – the more devices a user has connected, the stronger their overall security.

There are currently three critical features of Knox Matrix that ensure its success. Trust Chain has devices monitoring each other for threats. Credential Sync secures user information as data is moved between devices; and Cross Platform SDK will enable devices on various operating systems and platforms (including but not limited to Android, Tizen and Windows) to join Knox Matrix with consistent security standards. This way, we can keep devices safe even in a hyper-connected world.

Knox Matrix manages all this within a private blockchain, allowing compatible devices to check each other for breaches and ensure safety with intelligent threat monitoring. With these steps in place and more features to be introduced, users will be able to enjoy multiple connected devices safely and conveniently.

The Path to the Next Frontier: Stronger Together

Creating the foundations for the next era of device security requires careful consideration. Knox Matrix’s development is going strong, but there are challenges on the way to the next frontier. These include reconciling the many different types of products, with varying operating systems and security standards, into a frictionless system able to work as one.

As devices become more connected, Samsung must also ensure they are not more complicated to use. With Knox Matrix, we are working to offer users transparency and choice along with protection. Users should be safe in the knowledge that they can make informed decisions about their devices, so they can be protected without hassle. We anticipate that Knox Matrix will alert users of potentially unsafe situations, such as the use of old firmware, offering suggestions for any next steps.

The power of Knox Matrix to protect connected ecosystems will be demonstrated in phases, starting with Samsung Galaxy products, such as smartphones and tablets. Knox Matrix-compatible models will be available from 2024, initially with the three core features mentioned above and more expected to follow via updates. This will expand to cover Samsung’s home appliance devices within the next two to three years, followed by partner devices. Development is already underway for partner device compatibility.

A Trusted Record of Secure Innovations

Samsung already has a long history of enabling different kinds of devices to work seamlessly together through SmartThings. In line with the company’s philosophy of open collaboration, Samsung has also been working closely with the most trusted industry partners and the wider security community to define and expand security standards, by better identifying flaws before they become problematic.

More eyes, more heads, better solutions. This background serves as a key foundation for all Samsung Galaxy devices, along with end-to-end protection and real-time threat detection that is built into every single layer of its products.

Knox Matrix is just the latest development in the innovative history of Samsung Knox security. Samsung most recently introduced Knox Vault, a key security solution that isolates users’ most sensitive data to ensure it never falls into the wrong hands.

Previous evolutions included TrustZone, which provided a secure environment within the main operating system to run sensitive applications and processes separately from regular software. As such, work and play could coexist securely on the same device. Samsung Knox also evolved into Knox Suite[1] in order to help businesses and key institutions around the world efficiently secure, deploy and manage their fleet of devices with customisable, easy-to-manage software and end-to-end security.

Samsung can proudly say that Knox is one of the most trusted security platforms – thanks to its defense-grade security. We are confident Samsung Knox is best placed to provide one of the best device security systems. Connected technology will help us create better lives and better experiences — and more connectivity does not necessarily have to mean more risk. With Samsung Knox, Samsung is setting the foundation for a safer tomorrow to be stronger together.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, 13 June 2018 – By 2020, an estimated 23.28 million South Africans will be using smartphones.[i] With cloud technology becoming increasingly popular as a business solution, more and more people will be using their personal devices to access work-related data remotely.[ii] Innovative technology means that mobile security is more advanced than ever before and both business and personal data can be effectively secured.

According to research, over 80% of employees use their own phones or tablets for doing tasks for work.[iii] While this may sound like there are a lot of highly motivated and dedicated workers out there, the reality is that technological advancement has simply made this possible. Mobile virtualisation is a term relating to the ability to create two separate environments or personas on one device – which means private and business information and activities can be completely separate, with different security protocols.[iv]

A malware or virus doctor isn’t the solution anymore. With advancing technology, hackers also become more advanced, so securing data has to be more effective than simply putting a fence around something or being alerted about threats coming in. The key is to embed security into every aspect of a phone – from the foundations.

Craige Fleischer, Vice President of Integrated Mobility for Samsung South Africa, says, “Knox is Samsung’s guarantee of security, which gives users the freedom to work and play, how and when they want. The Samsung Knox platform is built into Samsung smartphones, tablets and wearables at the manufacturing stage, so it’s there before the device is even unpacked. The Knox platform consists of overlapping defence and security mechanisms that protect against intrusion, malware and more malicious threats.”

But it’s not just about detecting threats – authentication systems verify not only the person performing the transaction, but also the permission to perform it at that exact time and location. This means that if a user is doing something sensitive in a location that’s not conducive to such activity, the device won’t allow it to happen.[v]

That’s just on a personal level. The Samsung Knox Platform for Enterprise gets even more intelligent, allowing IT managers to create bespoke solutions for their business needs that is capable of being managed and controlled remotely. Each business-use device can be managed and secured by Knox Platform for Enterprise, which provides IT with government-certified data encryption, advanced VPN and powerful tools to manage and monitor corporate devices and data traffic usage. IT is even able to choose to deploy an on-device container to separate work and personal data.[vi]

“As the world becomes increasingly mobile, security and privacy are of utmost importance. Being able to separate business from personal activities doesn’t just protect businesses’ sensitive data, it also protects employees personal information,” concludes Fleischer.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, 07 June 2018 – The fashion industry is at the forefront of bringing the latest colours into the market place. Every year there are over 100 Fashion Week events[i] around the world that wow fans with the season’s must-have hues. But it’s not just fashion that the colours of the year influence – everything from interior décor to product packaging light up with the latest hot tint. Smartphones have become an essential tool for daily life and with their latest offering, Samsung have ensured that their Galaxy S9 and S9+ are this season’s hottest accessories too.

In 2017, leading trend predicting company WGSN (formerly Worth Global Style Network) projected the rise in popularity of shades of purple into 2018.[ii] With the launch of the Galaxy S9 and S9+, Samsung surprised the world with its exquisite lilac purple and midnight black devices and most recently, Coral Blue.

Craige Fleischer, Vice President of Integrated Mobility for Samsung South Africa says, “The colours available for our Galaxy series are definitely on point in terms of trends and I love the fact that Samsung is now playing an important role in the world of fashion as well as being a technology leader.”

Get into fashionista territory with the colour that best suits your personality. Samsung’s colour reveal of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ in Coral Blue, which is now available in South Africa, relates to one-on-one communication and is idealistic. The colour signifies an enhancement of self-expression and the ability to communicate, at the same time inspiring higher ideals. The exceptional camera that’s part and parcel of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ is the ideal accessory for people who desire to express themselves and communicate that expression to their friends, peers and family.[iii]

Lilac purple is right up there with the latest fashion and style trends. When looking at what the colour purple represents, it’s all about the future, imagination and dreams. It’s known as an inspiring colour for people who are grounded, but also relate to the world of fantasy. It stands to reason then that smartphone users who choose this colour will enjoy the AR Emoji feature on the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+.[iv]

Black is a strong colour, indicating self-control and discipline, as well as independence. The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ is also available in midnight black and this colour, which is always stylish, also indicates a highly organised personality. The features of Samsung’s flagship devices like Knox security, Bixby and the ability to open two app windows at once will suit this type of personality.[v]

Whether the smartphone an individual chooses is down to personal taste or has a deeper meaning, one thing is for sure, getting one of this year’s hottest innovations won’t cramp anyone’s style.
