The Six Essential Laundry Tips and Tricks 

1. Do Laundry More Often

If doing the laundry isn’t one of your favourite activities, rather do small bundles more frequently, instead of saving up massive wash loads to do at one time. You can also claim some of this time for yourself by listening to a podcast, audiobook or music while you wash, hang and fold your laundry.

2. Stain Removal Wipes

Spills at meal times are par for the course, but instead of dealing with ingrained stains on laundry day, there is an easier way. Stain removal wipes can be kept in your handbag, car or office. Apply a stain removal wipe soon after a spill, this will minimise the effort on laundry day and will preserve your favourite garments.

3. Avoid Shrinkage

Cotton fabrics can safely undergo a hot wash cycle. For everything else check the advisory labels attached. This will also help determine whether the colours need special care not to run. Always ensure that you programme your machine for a cold wash and the right setting to suit the load and the clothing you’re washing.

4. Pre-sort Laundry into Baskets

A simple solution is to use a three- or four-bin laundry sorting system, tossing clothes into the appropriate bin from the start. Whether you are doing separate colour loads – or one person’s laundry at a time to avoid searching for all their clothing items afterwards – this is a great solution.

5. Put Socks in Mesh Bags

Why not treat yourself to a few mesh bags – the idea is that each person puts his or her socks into a mesh bag, zips it up and tosses it in the laundry. When the bags come out of the washing machine, the socks are all together and ready to be put on the line, side-by-side.

6. Special Care for Nylon

Wash nylon clothing every time you wear it. Nylon is hard to clean once it becomes heavily soiled. Flood any oily stains immediately after they happen with warm or hot water to prevent them from becoming permanent.

Luckily, leading scientists have unravelled the cause of one of life’s greatest mysteries by discovering the secrets to why our socks go missing in the wash. Their research has led them to devise a mathematical formula to predict the probability of ending up with odd socks after a washing load spinning cycle.

The study, commissioned by Samsung in light of the AddWash washing machine launch, surveyed 2,000 people living in Britain who were representative of global population groups and happy to discuss their dirty laundry in public. Through a series of in-depth face to face interviews, it found that the participants lose an average of 1.3 socks each month (and more than 15 in a year), leaving them with numerous mismatches. If the average life expectancy is 81, these cleaning catastrophes lead to the equivalent of 1,264 lost socks each over a lifetime, costing the average study participant a whopping R43,198.21.

In all, these laundry losses mean around 84 million socks go missing every month in the UK alone. However, sock salvation is in sight. Samsung’s AddWash uses an innovative second door which allows users to simply drop in extra items during the wash cycle – whether that’s a stray sock you missed, extra softener or a hand-washed garment for final rinsing – providing a possible end to the problem of forfeited footwear.

Chartered psychologist Dr Simon Moore and statistician Geoff Ellis applied science to socks in a bid to discover the factors which contribute to washday blues. *

Many fanciful theories have been put forward for these laundry losses, including theft by gremlins, but the team’s work ultimately revealed:

• The main factors causing missing socks are the complexity of the washing load. The way the batches are divided up, based on whites, colours and different temperatures and the number of socks in each wash cycle.
• There are many practical reasons for sock loss. Research interviews found the common causes included items falling behind radiators or under furniture without anyone realising; stray items being added to the wrong coloured wash or separated from its matching sock; not being properly secured to a washing line or they are simply carelessly paired up.

Mike van Lier, Director of Consumer Electronics at Samsung South Africa said: “We believe this new study has finally solved the age-old mystery of the missing socks. At Samsung, we are changing the way we do laundry with the AddWash machine. No longer will we load the machine with trepidation as we worry whether pairs will be separated forever. Now we can add those loose socks and any other item of clothing we forgot in mid-wash, to ensure everything stays together safely.”

Laundry disasters can put a serious damper on your day, like that moment when your precious mohair sweater emerges from the wash looking like an infant’s Melton jacket, or when your Egyptian linen turns a dingy grey because somebody carelessly tossed their new jeans in with the sheets. Or how about that time when the washing machine mysteriously flooded the house? But fret not, Samsung has a quick solution to all your laundry mishaps.

Along with its new technology, there are a few washday hacks you need to know that will help you get the best out of your washing machine and avoid future washday disasters:

Pre-empt the flood

Install the washing machine correctly, ensuring that it is levelled and properly connected to the inlet and outlet pipes. One unreliable connection can result in a high pressure spill all over the floor. In case you haven’t read the manual (and who has the time?), most washing machines have a lint filter inside the machine or even cunningly hidden behind a screw-in panel down one side. Find it and clean it out regularly, or risk an unexpected deluge.

Avoid the big shrink

Basically, only cotton can safely undergo a hot wash cycle. For everything else: check the advisory labels attached. Always ensure that you programme your machine for a cold wash and the right level of agitation to suit the load and the clothing you’re washing.

Treat your laundry with love

If you’ve ever ruined underwear by getting them stretched and entangled with other clothing, or found snags in your delicate silk and satin: rethink your strategy. When you’re washing delicates – make use of the delicate setting on your machine. Check the machine drum for rust, damage or large water extraction holes that could snag your washing. Use specialised net washing bags to keep your delicate clothing from becoming tangled.

The dreaded colour run

Avoid colour run by carefully sorting laundry by colour and washing on a cool cycle to protect fabric. Should you accidentally dye your white items pink or grey, check the detergent aisle of your local supermarket for specialised colour run remover. And to keep your whites whiter: avoid using too much detergent. It can leave laundry looking dull and dirty.
