unveiled One UI 5 Watch[1], to be available for Galaxy Watch devices later this year. The new software is designed to bring an even more personalised and intuitive health experience and includes enhancements that support better sleep — an often neglected yet essential part of overall wellness — as well as various fitness and safety features.

Better Sleep: Essential to Better Health

Samsung has focused its efforts on three key elements for better sleep: understanding personal sleep patterns, building healthy habits, and establishing a sleep-friendly environment. One UI 5 Watch delivers on these elements with an even more complete sleep experience.

The new Sleep Insights UI prominently displays the user’s sleep score to provide a clearer snapshot of the prior night’s rest, followed by related metrics like sleep phases, snoring hours and blood oxygen levels. In addition, Sleep Coaching — tailored around eight different sleep types[2] — also becomes fully accessible directly on Galaxy Watch as well as a paired phone, making for a more convenient and motivational way for users to track their habits anytime, anywhere.

Creating a comfortable environment can make all the difference in sleep quality, and even small distractions can have outsized impacts. That’s why Samsung has made it easier to connect Galaxy Watch to a wide range of devices. Once the user’s Galaxy Watch detects that they have fallen asleep, SmartThings lets the user switch off their connected devices to create a more conducive environment for rest. Sleep Mode swiftly mutes notifications and dims the user’s phone and watch screens, and One UI 5 Watch builds on this feature by now utilising an infrared sensor rather than a green LED light to further minimise distractions. 

A Smarter Fitness Partner

Personalised Heart Rate Zone has been added to Galaxy Watch’s various tailored running tools — including real-time running analysis and a customised interval training program. This new feature analyses individual physical capabilities[3] and sets five optimal workout intensity levels (warm-up, fat burn, cardio, hard-training and max. effort). This enables users to set their own goals based on their ability, from burning fat to high-impact cardio.

Outdoor activity enthusiasts with Galaxy Watch Pro can look forward to additional benefits, starting with an expanded Route Workout—which now supports running and walking alongside previously available hiking and cycling route options. Galaxy Watch Pro users can also search and access the GPX File Database directly via Samsung Health app, and receive recommendations on new routes based on inputs like location, time, rating or popularity[4]. 

Safety First, Always On

Safety is a must when it comes to health and wellness, and One UI 5 Watch also offers improved tools for greater peace of mind. Updates to the SOS feature enable direct communication to an emergency telephone number to relay information on the wearer’s location[5], and also allow immediate access to the wearer’s Medical Information once an SOS is activated. In addition, Fall Detection is now activated by default for users of advanced ages[6] to help lower the risk of emergencies. These are just some of the examples of Samsung’s ongoing efforts to enhance user safety.

One UI 5 Watch will be available first on the upcoming Galaxy Watch series later this year with further updates to be announced soon.

During the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, Samsung Electronics announced that the smartphone would “offer the best camera experience supported by the highest performance yet”. Fast forward a couple of months and the reviews are in. If many of the reviews and reports on it are anything to go by, the new Series has put its best foot forward and certainly hit all the right notes. “Samsung’s latest flagship has proven that the Galaxy S23 series is on par with what you’d expect from a premium phone in 2023. The Fortress of Solitude’s Evan Saunders, a seasoned professional with over two decades in technology journalism, shared his impressions about what comes out of the Galaxy S23 box. He said “although the S23 range still features the Android 13 OS, which many of the most recent smartphones were upgraded to in 2022, the new range comes with One UI 5.1 out of the box. This brings with it a host of optimisations and fresh features, especially in the form of multitasking.” He got to spend a few weeks with the Galaxy S23 Plus and his overall take on the device was that, “The Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus is a great standalone smartphone. It offers all the modern features you’d need in a daily driver and is optimised for long battery life and multitasking.”

Another place where you can look for reviews on the plus and base devices in the Galaxy S23 series is HTXT, one of South Africa’s leading technology news and review sites. Hypertext’s editor, Robyn-Leigh Chetty said, “Samsung has pretty much perfected its flagship phone-making process.” When talking about performance the site said that that’s where the base Galaxy S23 really starts to shine. “Running things is the latest mobile silicon from Qualcomm, namely the octa-core Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, which is paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage. It is a solid mix that yields the best benchmarking we have recorded to date.” The site goes on to say the user interface is “relatively clean and simple to use and the modest 3 900mAh battery on offer delivers a surprisingly long amount of life, as we were able to get through a day and a half before a charge was required.”

As a final verdict, Hypertext said, “The base model Samsung Galaxy S23 is a good phone and the latest in a long line of flagship offerings from the South Korean outfit that delivers a simple and clean aesthetic, powerful performance, clear display, and solid battery life.”

Top Tech Reviewer and editor of Stuff Magazine, Brett Venter took special note of the leaps in innovation in this new Galaxy S series. He said, “Samsung’s out to wow you and if you’ve been away from the upgrade game for a while, it absolutely will. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is the company’s greatest phone to date. We kinda say that every year but it’s always true.”

In a flight attendant-like announcement, Galaxy’s new video spotlighting the ease of switching over to a new Galaxy smartphone from another operating system announces that apps and data from your former smartphone have moved fast and comfortably made it to their new device. The icons are impressed with their new home, taking a leisurely look around while checking out their new appearance.

Shot from the perspective of smartphone icons, this amusing video was released on Samsung Electronics’ YouTube channel in April as part of the “Samsung Galaxy: All About Switching” campaign. It shows off leading Galaxy features for consumers who may be hesitant to make the switch. In more than two weeks since its release, the clip went viral — reaching 21.2 million views and receiving more than 72,000 likes and 5,400 comments.

Can I Safely Switch to Galaxy? Answering the Real Concerns of Consumers

Research shows that concerns about the device switching process are a phenomenon shared by many. From questions about the complexity of the switching process to platform compatibility with existing peripherals, to worries over whether photos and other data can be safely transferred without loss, switching fears are common.

In “All About Switching,” the icons mirror consumers’ initial concerns, becoming lost in confusion upon hearing that they’ll be moving to a new home. Comical conversations ensue between the personified icons to help ease consumers’ potential worries.

Here to reassure both concerned icons and consumers alike is the Galaxy Smart Switch app. The switch to Galaxy is over in a flash, complemented by the lively and dynamic icons. Even without facial features, their expressions and detailed animation effects help bring each icon to life. To help create this entertaining video, Samsung enlisted the help of some notable voice actors who have appeared in Hollywood blockbusters such as Star Wars and Jurassic Park and an animation voice acting specialist whose credits include the U.S. versions of Naruto and Bleach. In addition, detailed animation effects help bring each icon to life. Through the “All About Switching” video, Samsung is not only showing how easy it is to make the switch to Galaxy but also introducing the unique features and benefits of Galaxy. The icon of each feature pops up during the corresponding chapter to introduce what it does while addressing any situations consumers may encounter.

One UI 5.1 expands upon the recently upgraded camera features announced with the Galaxy S23 series. Galaxy users now have greater flexibility to create professional quality photos with Expert RAW[4] features now available directly as part of the Galaxy Camera app. Simply select “More” while taking a photo to capture high-quality shots in their raw format.

Additionally, enhanced AI-based Photo Remaster automatically improves deteriorated details of images by improving brightness, fine-tuning details and making colour corrections even in backlit scenes. It also removes unwanted shadows and reflections for a picture-perfect photo.[5]
