Samsung Electronics has been shaping the history of television through the development of its technological innovations, from FHD and 4K through to 8K, thanks to its far-sighted strategic vision and an endless passion to bring new technologies to the market.

In order to learn more about the achievements made so far in the field of TV technological innovation, as well as the future of display technologies in the age of UHD screens, Samsung Newsroom sat down with TV experts.

(From left) Sangmin Lee, Head of the Picture Quality Solution Lab, Hyunchul Song from the Product Development Group and Youngseok Han from H/W Platform Lab of Samsung’s Visual Display Business

Pioneering the Future of TV Through Endless Innovation

These days, picture quality has become one of the most crucial factors consumers consider when choosing a TV. In 1977, Samsung succeeded in the development and mass production of a colour TV, the Colour Economy TV, for the first time in Korea, ushering in the era of colour television for the country.

Samsung earned the title of being a pioneer in colour TV manufacturing in Korea thanks to its steadfast dedication to innovation, and the company was never complacent about the colossal success of its black and white TV model, the Econo TV, which took the lion’s share within the monthly TV market at the time.

Samsung’s first LED TV, launched in 2009, wowed the world as a breakthrough in TV technology.

Next to be developed was the LCD TV, and, in 2009, Samsung unveiled its breakthrough model — the Samsung LED TV. The LED TV was the culmination of all the innovative technologies available at the time, allowing for unrivalled picture quality brought about by light-emitting diodes. All components of Samsung’s LED TV were designed anew, and the number of patents acquired for this model exceeded 3,000.

Samsung’s QLED TV made its global debut at CES in 2017.

In 2017, Samsung then went on to introduce the remarkable QLED TV based on cadmium-free quantum dot technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The company’s innovative TV was at the centre of attention that year, boasting superb picture quality and 100% colour volume. A year later, the company brought to the market a QLED 8K model that incorporated 8K resolution into Samsung’s proprietary quantum dot technology.

It featured Direct Full Array, a backlight technology able to precisely control the lighting balance across every part of the picture on-screen, as well as 8K AI Upscaling – an upscaling technology designed to intelligently upgrade lower-quality videos into vivid 8K resolution. Samsung’s innovative QLED 8K technologies played a crucial part in launching the era of 8K.

“In 2020, Samsung unveiled the incredible bezel-less TV that completely removed the bezels from around the display,“ said Hyunchul Song from the Product Development Group. “A year later, we further solidified our position as an innovator by introducing our Neo QLED technology based on Quantum Mini LED displays. From FHD through to 8K, we have undertaken ceaseless efforts to develop innovative products that offer differentiated experiences based on consumer needs.”

Striving for Superior Picture Quality Through In-Depth Research Into Human Behaviour

Samsung continues to strive to offer the best possible viewer experiences by delivering astounding picture quality. However, what does “good picture quality” mean to someone who works on its development?

“Picture quality is considered good when it delivers a sense of reality to the viewer that feels as if you are witnessing the images on-screen first-hand,” explained Youngseok Han, a developer from the H/W Lab. “To ensure good picture quality, display performance indicators such as high resolution, high luminance and excellent colour expression are essential. What also matters is how well-balanced the other trailblazing technologies of the display are, including the chip design, the picture quality algorithms and the sound.”

Han went on to provide further insight into the importance of balance to the corresponding picture quality. “The factors that impact picture quality the most are how well you organise the various relevant technologies. These include those designed to reduce distortion and any image transmission noise, those that reproduce colours precisely and richly and create sharp contrast for more vivid, clear images and those motion technologies that ensure the movement of objects on-screen appears smooth and fluid.”

It would be impossible to develop good picture quality with just one singular technology, no matter how great that technology is. This is why Samsung is committed to developing innovative technologies through all kinds of different approaches without resting on their laurels as one of the ground-breakers in the industry. Recently introduced on the 2023 Neo QLED TV, Real Depth Enhancer is one of the new features that has been developed to the end of further improving picture quality.

When human eyes are focused on an object, attention is directed onto the object by optimising sharpness, clarity and texture, all while also maintaining the background scene. Samsung’s Real Depth Enhancer technology was developed based on an understanding of this human behaviour, and harnesses AI to automatically separate an object from its background to create a greater sense of depth and make the images truly pop.

Furthermore, Neo Quantum Matrix Pro technology improves the playback of fine details through precise control of the quantum mini LEDs across a total of 16,384 levels. This meticulous adjustment further adds dimension and a sense of reality to the images on-screen.

“Our Real Depth Enhancer technology is the result of an optimisation of all the relevant technologies in a way that takes human psychology into account, instead of focusing only on improving resolution,” noted Han.

From 8K Games to Artworks on Samsung TVs in the Age of 8K Technology

These days, users are being bombarded by new content. Tens of thousands of new pieces of media and content are being published every day across all manner of platforms — but does the same apply for those pieces of content being made in 8K?

“Following the recent growth of 8K devices including smartphones, anyone is able to create 8K content and view it in ultra-high resolution,” said Sangmin Lee, Head of the Picture Quality Solution Lab. “High-performance graphics cards also now make it possible for users to play 8K games, meaning that we are already living in the age of 8K UHD.”

Song further detailed the growth of 8K content in today’s viewing market. “There is a growing amount of 8K content available on social media channels, and artists are creating digital artworks in 8K,” he explained. “We added in ‘YouTube Videos in 8K’ feature to the 2023 Neo QLED TV to allow users to peruse the 8K content available on YouTube and explore digital artworks, such as an image in NFT1 form, at a single glance.”

Samsung is also spearheading the expansion of the 8K content ecosystem by being at the helm of the 8K Association, a global non-profit organisation established in 2019 with the aim of establishing 8K standards and expanding 8K content.

As of February 2023, the association has 33 members, including Samsung, TV panel producers, (System On a Chip) SoC chip makers and some well-known content creators. Last year, Samsung released a teaser for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series in 8K developed in collaboration with Amazon Prime Video, another member of the 8K Association.

Developing Optimal Picture Quality That Takes Viewing Experiences to the Next Level

In order to learn more about the next steps for Samsung in terms of picture quality in the age of 8K technology, Samsung Newsroom asked the three TV professionals what their goals are.

“As a developer, I feel the most accomplished when I hear the feedback that viewers think the images on-screen seem real to them,” said Han. “My goal is to further improve our algorithms by optimising a range of components in order to deliver picture quality that is ‘more real than real’ to viewers.”

For Song, creating technologies that bring real value to users is of the utmost importance. “While the development department works to create the best picture quality through technological innovation, I am more involved in optimising products to bring high-quality experiences to as many viewers as possible,” said Song. “I will continue to deliberate on what other kinds of user value we can bring to our viewers.”

Finally, from Lee’s perspective, the goal is and always has been to provide users with experiences that go beyond simply watching content. “The most important value that a display can provide is to present images that seem more real than reality itself,” explained Lee. “Through the best picture quality algorithms and outstanding sound performance, the optimal picture quality that is delivered then allows users to enjoy their favourite content without having to worry about adjusting the settings. Our ultimate goal is to offer superb picture quality that enables users to thoroughly enjoy their viewing experiences that go beyond simply watching content.”

Stay tuned to Samsung Newsroom for the second and final part in this series highlighting the role of the 8K TV and the innovative technologies Samsung has been developing to provide the best possible viewing experiences to its users.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 13 September 2021 – Samsung TV’s offer a high-quality viewing experience, which is why the renowned QLED TV line-up, including the incredible Neo QLED continue to receive praise around the world. With QLED TVs, many people are interested in what makes them different from OLEDs. It all boils down to different technological principles. QLED TVs use Quantum dots which are inorganic, durable, stable and allow for excellent colour and brightness. Meanwhile OLED TVs use organic material that can leave them susceptible to image retention.

What’s special about QLED TVs?

There is a bit of science behind the magic. QLED TVs take advantage of the many unique characteristics that Quantum dots offer such as “high luminance”. Luminance refers to how bright a screen looks and that brightness is an important factor affecting other elements of image quality. First, contrast ratio is naturally improved when brightness is higher. When bright and dark representation of videos and images can be widely expressed, it’s known as HDR (high dynamic range). This HDR, which is an essential component of picture quality, is enhanced further providing crisp and rich images.

Since TVs are not frequently replaced, you should consider carefully whether there are any factors that might lead to regret after purchase. QLED TVs cannot avoid Burn-in due to the nature of their self-illuminated organic displays. Burn-in is a permanent defect in the panel where a residual screen image appears permanently on screen. If you think about frequently displayed images such as broadcaster logos, they are in the same fixed area for a certain period of time. Repeatedly displaying the same logo in the same place is enough to result in Burn-in. QLED TVs have the advantage in that you can watch your content for long periods of time without having to worry about Burn-in—allowing for an overall longer TV lifespan.

QLED brings a world of light and colour to life

The effect of brightness on overall colour quality is simple. For example, in the red colour spectrum there is a range of bright and dark reds, but QLED TVs express this range of colours better. This unique QLED technology, along with other black implementation technologies such as Direct Full Array, provides a completely different picture quality and a more realistic viewing experience compared to non-QLED TVs.

The colours matter

All TVs use red, green, and blue as the base colours to create the images you see on screen.

However, the way different kinds of TVs produce those colours varies, resulting in true colours or not-so-realistic colours. With Samsung, the Quantum dot separately depicts accurate red, green, and blue – producing pure colour and lifelike hues.

Turning up the volume is key

Colour volume is the next difference. It is what happens when light is shone through colour, resulting in a bright-to-dark spectrum of every colour. The better the colour volume in a TV, the closer to life the colours appear. QLED TV expresses 100% of the colour volume, thereby producing an incredible range of colours.

It’s all in the details

In a movie scene at night, there may be a character lurking in the dark, but you don’t’ want to strain your eyes to see them. QLED TV uses HDR, or High-Dynamic Range, to achieve the level of brightness that we see in the real world. This is much easier on our eyes and we get to an incredible amount of detail.

These are just some of the reasons Samsung QLED TV’s continue to be the TV South Africans trust. Samsung continues to analyse every facet of your TV viewing from AI-powered pixel upscaling and sound optimisation to environmental adaptation that turns the TV into a fine piece of modern art. This isn’t just unstoppable innovation. It is technology made to last. Beyond TV viewing, QLED is also incredible for gaming as it has the fastest refresh rate and lowest input lag, which could be the difference between victory and losing a precious lifeline.

QLED is sustainable Innovation

Samsung also strives to incorporate environmental sustainability into everything it does. The company’s products are thoughtfully designed to minimise their impact on the environment throughout their lifecycle – from the planning and manufacturing stages to their use and recycling. This includes using power-efficient semiconductor chips, sustainable packaging and energy-saving technology, and offering consumers the ability to upcycle packaging and old devices. Through tangible solutions like these, the company is empowering consumers to take part in an important mission: conserving resources and reducing their environmental footprint.

QLED fits seamless into your home decor

If you’re looking for something to really stand out, an amazing option with QLED TV’s is that they are able to display content including your cherished photos and favourite artwork. This means you can tailor your TV to your décor and change it whenever you’re in the mood.

Ultimately, Samsung TVs push the boundaries of style, technology and consumer experience. QLED TVs combine cutting-edge picture and sound innovations with premium designs to offer users unparalleled new viewing experiences. For QLED TV’s including the latest Neo QLED, Samsung has elevated visual and audio quality to new heights, and ensured that not only is the user experience more seamless and intuitive, but it’s an experience you just can’t help but love.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 28 August 2019 – The softest, most comfortable mattresses and a power shower, no longer break the top of the list of hotel guest requirements. They’re expected. The fact is, intelligent tech in hotel design is quickly altering customer’s perceptions of hospitality. While the fundamentals of exceptional hospitality will always remain true, with more and more visitors searching for truly distinct and personalised hotel experiences, the hospitality industry has turned to technology to offer guests greater control over their stay in the hotel.

Digital Natives Are Here to Stay

Today, millennials account for 30% of all hotel guests and that figure is set to rise to 75% by 2020. They have grown up in a mobile-first world, as a dominant tribe of digital natives and expect to be able to use their mobile devices and applications to do anything from shopping to meetings, to tracking their home security. Also, they travel in a BYOD [Bring Your Own Device] culture with various devices and expect digital characteristics and applications that are essential to their stay, while likewise expecting to readily verify their information and communicate with their hotel immediately via an app rather than an email, mobile, or web browser.

A New Generation of Hotel Managers

Some hoteliers have expressed worries about applications and tech depersonalising the hotel experience. However, hoteliers who adapt to a first tech approach are improving guest satisfaction faster than ever. Technology offers guests a return to proper hospitality in this environment, giving them a higher level of control over their on-site, in-room experiences, enhancing their stay and delivering previously impossible, highly personalised experiences.

Welcome to Positive ROI

In an increasingly crowded and competitive industry, hotels groups across the world are embracing and experimenting with smart tech in hotels to deliver innovative and ground-breaking experiences. For example, Samsung South Africa in partnership with HTI Consulting hosted key hotel partners at its Samsung offices in Johannesburg for key industry leaders from organisations, including the Hilton Hotel Group, AHA Group, Legacy Group and the Hospitality Property Fund.

Samsung showcased innovative products designed to enhance customer touchpoints across the hospitality sector from business to leisure. These include the ground-breaking QLED TV range, Hospitality Display Range, Samsung Fl!p and QLED curved monitors – products suited to an industry that continues to raise the bar in terms of customer experiences.

“Innovative business solutions require powerful business technology. We’re pleased that our products have received an overwhelmingly enthusiastic reaction from an industry, intent on taking customer satisfaction levels to unprecedented heights”, says Reggie Nxumalo, B2B Director at Samsung South Africa. “Utilising smart tech in hotel design is opening doors to increased revenue, unlocking new income streams, reducing waste and improving sustainability”

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, 19 December 2018 – As families and friends descend on each other’s homes this festive season, there’s suddenly a lot more people that need to be entertained. Living rooms instantly become an arena filled with an audience waiting to be amused, amazed and astounded. This is where the Samsung QLED steps boldly into the spotlight to give an unrivalled performance. When there’s a house filled with restless children and bored adults, the QLED is exactly the TV that’s needed.

“The QLED is a fully immersive experience, with every one of its features designed to enthral. It’s an example of pioneering technology in brilliant action. Over the holidays it becomes an even bigger crowd pleaser,” says Reginald Nxumalo, Director of Consumer Electronics at Samsung South Africa.

Whether the kids demand nonstop cartoons, the family wants to gather around that heartfelt Christmas movie or its time to enjoy the big game, every one of the millions of pixels allow you to see detail like never before. It feels like you’re there – freedom of space, freedom of pure enjoyment. Designed to captivate, the QLED also considers the finer details. Gone is the clutter of multiple remote controls, as One Remote allows you to sync all of your devices together for less mess and clutter. Over the festive season this is a much appreciated blessing. And the features never stop delighting you. With Ambient Mode, you can make your TV almost invisible. By mimicking the colour and texture of the room around it, the QLED will blend seamlessly into your home. You can also bring your room to life by showing works of art or treasured photos in immaculate detail. What better time of the year to display images of those you love on a big screen.

Beyond the aesthetics, this super smart TV range is designed to make your life easier. From learning your viewing habits and suggesting new series, to letting you know whether you’ll need an umbrella or sunscreen each morning, the Artificial Intelligence within is like nothing you’ve seen before. It even optimises the volume and brightness as you watch. So there’s no fumbling for the remote during extra noisy scenes and waking up a sleeping baby. After all, nobody wants to be responsible for that mishap.

The QLED is the all year TV, that just happens to be the TV that’s perfect for the festive season.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, 28 November 2018 – The shift in the way people communicate, access info and keep up to date with their world has evolved dramatically. However, television has remained an important part of the lives of South Africans. The news, views and shows reflect our people and cultures in unique ways. This is why it has remained a sophisticated window into our minds.

Long before written language, storytelling was an important aspect of everyday life and it still is today. According to research, “storytelling is a powerful means of fostering social cooperation and teaching social norms[i]. A good example is how immigrants are able to more easily assimilate into their adopted country by observing social norms through TV series, news and local programming.[ii] Additionally, numerous studies have been conducted on the influence of television programming on social change. One such study has focused on the advent of satellite television programming in rural India. Within a year of programmes other than those aired by a public broadcaster being available, there were significant changes in gender attitudes. Women were less likely to accept domestic abuse and there was an increase in school enrolment for younger children. In fact, the differences in attitudes between women in rural areas and those in urban areas decreased from seventy to forty-five percent.[iii]

Reginald Nxumalo, Director of Consumer Electronics at Samsung South Africa, says, “In South Africa, television plays an immense role in education. Samsung’s range of superlative QLED TV’s, for example, ensures that whatever you’re watching becomes a fully immersive experience. This enhances the impact of the content”

While putting a child in front of the TV for extended periods of time has always been a contentious issue, the content they consume is more important than the time spent. A research study showed that children in Finland scored higher than most of the rest of the world in their reading skills. One reason for this, concludes the research, is that they are often served American shows and have to read the captions in their own language.[iv] Understanding the narrative of their own local society and learning about other societies, as well as interesting or fundamental facts about the world is also a highly valued aspect of watching TV. So, while sitcoms can teach societal intricacies, it’s usually best to ensure children are watching age-appropriate programmes that are geared to teach

With on-demand television programming and streaming services, researchers have been able to track viewer behaviour even more effectively across the globe. Interestingly, it’s been found that viewers tend to multi-task – by being online on various social platforms and commenting while watching a TV programme, whether it’s live TV or streamed.[v] On demand or streaming services mean that multiple programmes can be watched by different members of a household. One of the negatives in streaming, however, is that viewers feel content is better watched on a TV screen. This is one of the reasons Samsung’s QLED models are connected through Smart Hub and with One Remote, so numerous streaming platforms can be viewed with vivid picture and sound. The Samsung Smart View app also means gives users the power to seamlessly connect their mobiles to their TV screens and be in complete control.

“The way people are watching TV and similar content may have changed, but one thing is for sure, the quality of the image is vital to the enjoyment. Samsung gives viewers an incredibly vibrant and detailed experience that brings their world to life in ways that impact their lives positively,” concludes Nxumalo.

TV sets are no longer merely appliances for watching movies and series. Today they’re powerful visual devices, serving up a feast for your eyes.

Imagine a TV set which is a multi-faceted,interactive picture frame to enhance a room’s ambience when it’s switched off, is able to connect to smartphones to view videos and photos and can also play music from your favorite playlist. Well, the Samsung QLED 2018 TV can do all of this while improving your standard watching or gaming experience.

STILL WORKING WHEN SWITCHED OFF

The Samsung QLED TV can be put to work even, when it’s not in use for its traditional purpose.

In its Ambient Mode, it can display a variety of info1mation for easy reference when you need it. In some countries, you can also use this functionality to display helpful snippets such as weather forecasts or news items.

From the Ambient scenery selection, you can choose between mountains, water, clocks and more to suit your taste, existing, wall art or even your mood.

This Ambient fade is also intelligent, so it’s able to detect whether people are nearby, turn off or on automatically to save power and adjust brightness, depending on the lighting in the room.

Use the Smart Things app so that your TV can communicate with your Samsung smartphone or the Samsung Cloud to display your photos.

While using the above visual-orientated functionality, the QLED’s setting can be further enhanced by your favorite playlist, which can be used via your Bluetooth connection.

GOODBYE, CORDS!

Many homes are burdened with an abundance of cables connecting devices to each other and to power points. The overall look is untidy and unattractive. But with the Samsung QLED TY, that’s a thing of the past. With its One Invisible Connection, Samsung has created a hybrid cable that integrates the data signal cable and the TV’s power cord. It can be hidden from view, creating a clean, neat aesthetic in your living space.

ONE CONNECT

Now a range of devices can be connected in one place. The One Connect Box gathers all your connections and the One Invisible Connection responds to your remote control.

Hide the One Connect box off to the side and design your space the way you like it.
