We live in an era where, in addition to convenience, people seek comfort, safety, and peace of mind. The Samsung SmartThings app delivers all of that, and more. More than just a smart home app, SmartThings has evolved into an intelligent lifestyle assistant. Working in the background to simplify life, SmartThings is helping us care for our loved ones, human or furry, and make our homes more responsive to who we are and how we live.

From supporting pet owners with peace of mind while they’re away, to empowering elderly family members to live independently with dignity, SmartThings is redefining what it means to live in a connected home. It’s no longer just about automation but about meaningful, everyday support.

With SmartThings, you discover a new way to enjoy your home, turning it into a smart thoughtful home. Powered by AI, automation and seamless integration across Samsung devices and compatible third-party gadgets, SmartThings creates a home that adapts to your needs.

Let’s explore how SmartThings is quietly reshaping real lives across various moments and milestones.

Pet Care – When you’re away, SmartThings[1] stays close*

Whether you’re a dog-dad rushing to work or a cat-mom on a weekend getaway, SmartThings can help you stay connected to your pets and their wellbeing.[2]

Set automated feeding times using connected smart feeders[3]

Use sensors and cameras to get instant alerts if your pet sneaks into the pantry or opens the front door[4]

Adjust the room temperature remotely to keep your pet comfy during heat waves or cold fronts.

Treat your pet from afar using smart treat dispensers you can control via voice or app.

Elderly Assistance – Supporting Independence Safely*

For families with elderly loved ones living alone or in care facilities, SmartThings offers peace of mind and practical support – without intruding on their independence.

Motion sensors can track activity and notify family if there is no movement in the morning for example.

Smart buttons allow older users to call for help with a single press.

Voice commands and automated routines make it easier to control lights, call family, or adjust blinds – ideal for people with mobility issues.

Medication reminders and evening lighting routines help establish structure and reduce the risk of accidents.

With SmartThings, elderly care becomes less about constant monitoring and more about empowerment.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability*

The SmartThings Energy dashboard makes it possible to track appliances that use a lot of energy, and helps your home optimise them for you.

Monitor energy use across connected devices.

Set up “Away” routines to switch off unused appliances and lights when you’re not home.

Use AI to optimise air-conditioning or heating based on room occupancy and outside weather[5]

Even better, shift high-energy appliances like washing machines to run during off-peak hours to save money and reduce grid load.

SmartThings is turning sustainability from a responsibility into an easy lifestyle habit.

Security – Because Peace of Mind Matters Most

SmartThings offers a robust set of features that help keep your home and the people in it secure. Sync with smart locks and door sensors[6] to get notified if a door is opened unexpectedly. SmartThings lets you monitor live feeds from your smart cameras in real-time, whether you’re in the next room or across the country. You can also automate lights to switch on at sunset, even when you’re not home, to deter would-be intruders. It’s like having a personal security assistant, working 24/7 in the background.

Emotional Wellness and Daily Flow – Your Home, Your mood

SmartThings doesn’t just automate, it harmonises. With custom routines, it helps create intentional moments of calm or energy depending on what your day demands. From creating a “Wind Down” routine that dims the lights, lowers the thermostat, and plays ambient sounds or calming music, to connecting with meditation apps that help your home’s environment adjust to you.

SmartThings is quietly building homes that are intelligent and compassionate – homes that notice, help and adapt. Whether you’re looking out for your golden retriever, your grandmother, your toddler or just trying to make life run a bit more smoothly, SmartThings offers a universe of connected possibilities**.

[1] To use SmartThings, download the App from the Galaxy Store, Google Play Store, or Apple App Store. The SmartThings App requires Android OS 10↑ with a minimum of 3GB RAM space or iOS 15↑. Supported OS specifications and app screen configuration may change with app updates.

[2] Only dogs and cats can be recognized. The recognition capabilities may be limited by the posture or position of a pet. The ability to recognize your pet may vary depending on the type of animal and the living environment. It only recognizes a pet presence based on generic visual indicators, and cannot identify individual pets.

[3] The availability of SmartThings Pet Care’s monitoring feature may vary by region and is only supported on the Jet Bot Combo AI and Jet Bot AI+ model.

[4] SmartThings is integrated with advanced connected sensors.

[5] features of the models vary.

[6] Features of the models vary.

*Devices that include a built-in SmartThings Hub include: Samsung TVs (models released after 2022: QN900*/ QN800*/ QN700*/ QN95*/ S95*/ QN90*/ QN85*/ Q80*/ Q70*/ Q60*/ *U8/ The Serif / The Frame / The Sero), Smart Monitors (Models M50* or higher for models released after 2022), Sound Bars (HW-Q990* and HW-LS60* for models released after 2022), Family Hub refrigerators (USA after 2017 and Korean release models, excluding RH9000), SmartThings Stations, and SmartThings Hubs v2/v3. For 2022 or earlier models, a separate accessory called a SmartThings Dongle is required to connect Thread and Zigbee devices.

Samsung Electronics has announced an update to its global connected living platform, SmartThings — further enhancing the AI Home experience. SmartThings introduces new features and improvements each quarter to deliver a more convenient and seamlessly connected lifestyle for users.

The highlight of this update is the integration of SmartThings with Samsung Health, designed to improve users’ sleep environments while enabling more personalised automation experiences. The update also expands Calm Onboarding to support a wider range of devices and adds compatibility with the Matter 1.4 standard.

“SmartThings’ latest update represents our ongoing efforts to make the smart home more intuitive, connected and personalised,” said Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings at Samsung Electronics. “We’re excited to continue pushing the boundaries of smart home innovation by empowering users through enhanced personalisation and automation, including sleep wellness.”

Samsung Newsroom outlines some of the key changes below.

Smarter Sleep Environments With Samsung Health Integration

Sleep environment reports Key1 from Samsung Health on Galaxy devices help users create optimal conditions for rest by providing detailed insights into key factors — such as temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels and light intensity — through connected devices and sensors. These reports summarise the previous night’s sleep conditions and offer personalised suggestions for improvement.

When paired with a Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring, the latest update enables SmartThings to automatically adjust the environment based on the user’s actual sleep and wake times. Key2 For example, routines can be set to turn off lights and the TV at bedtime or to open curtains and play music in the morning.

Greater Flexibility With SmartThings Routines

With the latest update, SmartThings now supports automation routines based on recurring schedules — weekly, monthly or annual — offering added flexibility for a variety of scenarios. For instance, users can automatically change the colour of smart lights to celebrate special occasions like family birthdays.

In addition, SmartThings routines now integrate with Samsung TV Plus on 2025 Samsung TV models. This allows users to include entertainment preferences in their smart home routines — whether it’s setting the TV to turn on the news in the morning or switching to a favourite channel at a preset time to ensure they don’t miss a show.

Broadcasting via SmartThings-Connected Speakers

A new broadcasting feature allows users to send voice messages across SmartThings-connected speakers, making in-home communication more convenient. For example, if a parent is away and sends a voice message through the SmartThings app — “I’ll be home soon, but have a snack from the fridge if you’re hungry” — it will automatically play on the designated home speaker. With real-time message delivery, families can stay connected no matter where they are.

Expanding Calm Onboarding to More Devices

Samsung has offered the Calm Onboarding Key3 feature since late 2023, streamlining setup for Samsung home appliances purchased through Samsung.com or official Samsung stores by linking the entire product journey — from order and delivery to connection with the SmartThings app.

In the latest SmartThings update, Samsung is expanding Calm Onboarding beyond its own products to include compatible third-party smart home devices for a more seamless and intuitive connectivity experience. Users who purchase SmartThings-compatible smart home devices directly from Samsung.com will now receive purchase and delivery updates within the SmartThings app. Additionally, users will receive step-by-step onboarding instructions to simplify product setup. The rollout will begin in Korea, with plans to expand to other countries. Key4

Matter 1.4 Support

SmartThings continues to advance the IoT landscape by expanding its support for Matter 1.4. The latest version of the standard includes a wide range of energy management devices — such as water heater, heat pump, solar power device, battery storage device, mounted on/off control switch and mounted dimmable load control device. These newly supported device categories build on existing popular device types like lights, thermostats, switches, air conditioners, air purifiers, fans, door locks and more.

By integrating AI-powered routines, broadening device compatibility and adopting the latest Matter standard, SmartThings reinforces its ongoing commitment to innovation — making the connected home more intelligent, energy-efficient and seamless for users and their families.

1 The Sleep environment report feature is available on Samsung Galaxy smartphones running One UI 7.0 or later and Samsung Health version 6.29 or later. Availability may expand in the future. For more information on compatible devices that can measure sleep environments, refer to the Sleep condition report under the “How to Use” section in the SmartThings app.

2 Setting routines based on sleep conditions may not be supported in certain countries. This feature is available on Samsung Galaxy smartphones with One UI 7.0 or Samsung Health version 6.29 or later, with plans for future expansion. A connected device capable of detecting sleep and wakefulness — such as Galaxy Watch4/5/6/7, Galaxy Watch Ultra, Galaxy Fit3 and Galaxy Ring — is required. For more information, refer to the “Accessories” section in the sleep tab of the Samsung Health app.

3 As of April 2025, the Calm Onboarding feature for Samsung products is available in 14 countries including Korea, the United States, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. Further expansion is planned throughout the year.

4 This support is planned for countries where the IoT Marketplace, which sells SmartThings compatible smart home devices on Samsung.com, is available. It will be first applied in Korea and gradually expanded to other countries.

In today’s fast-paced world, technology is transforming the way we live, work, and play. At the heart of this transformation is the concept of smart living – a world where connected devices work together seamlessly to simplify our daily routines, increase efficiency, and enhance overall comfort. All of this is possible thanks to Samsung SmartThings, the smart home ecosystem that is helping South Africans experience the future of living right in their homes today.

Smart living isn’t just about flashy gadgets or futuristic innovations. It’s about creating a connected environment where everything works together in harmony. The rise of smart devices has made it easier than ever to enhance the functionality of your home, but managing multiple devices can quickly become overwhelming. That’s where Samsung SmartThings comes in, offering a centralised platform that integrates and automates a wide range of devices – from lights and thermostats to refrigerators and washing machines – making your home smarter, more efficient, and easier to manage.

What is Samsung SmartThings?

Samsung SmartThings is a comprehensive smart home platform that acts as the central hub for your connected devices. By linking up everything from lights and air conditioners to TVs and washing machines, SmartThings enables you to control your home environment with a few taps or voice commands. It’s compatible with a wide array of Samsung and third-party devices.

Whether you want to adjust the temperature, monitor your energy usage, or simply control your lights, SmartThings connects it all in one simple, easy-to-use app. Samsung ensures that your home is equipped for the future with seamless integration across its range of devices – including smartphones, wearables, and TVs.

Professional gamer, tech enthusiast and TV presenter, Grant Hinds, who has had experience with SmartThings as Samsung’s brand partner, had this to say, “SmartThings is more than a smart home platform – it’s a practical ecosystem that adapts to real life. I’ve always believed that tech should simplify, not complicate. What Samsung has done here is take the guesswork out of connected living. Whether you’re managing energy, automating your day, or syncing your lifestyle across devices, it just works. That’s where the power lies – in its quiet efficiency and seamless integration.”

Everyday Smart Home Hacks Using Samsung SmartThings

Samsung SmartThings is designed to simplify and elevate your daily life. Here are some easy-to-implement “hacks” that will take your home to the next level:

Automate Your Lighting
Set up motion sensors to automatically turn your lights on and off as you enter or leave a room. No more fumbling for switches in the dark or worrying about leaving the lights on when you head out.

Create Custom Routines
Create routines that automatically adjust your home to suit your schedule. For instance, program your thermostat to adjust to the perfect temperature when you wake up or when you return home. You can also set your speakers to play your favourite playlist as soon as you walk in the door or your favourite podcast as you start your day.

Save Energy
With SmartThings, you can monitor the energy consumption of your appliances and devices in real-time. Set up appliances to operate during off-peak hours to save on electricity costs, or use SmartThings to receive energy-saving tips and reminders to optimise your usage.

Improve Home Health and Comfort
Smart sensors can help you maintain optimal conditions for comfort and health in your home. From controlling air quality with smart air purifiers to adjusting temperature and humidity, SmartThings helps create a healthier, more comfortable living environment.

Secure Your Home Automatically
Set up a routine to ensure your doors are locked and security cameras are activated when you leave the house. You can even receive notifications if any unusual activity is detected while you’re away.

Integration with Other Samsung Devices

Samsung’s ecosystem is more than just a group of devices – it’s an integrated experience designed to make life easier. For example, you can control your SmartThings-compatible devices directly from your Galaxy smartphone, giving you control whether you’re at home or away. Want to adjust your home’s thermostat from your Galaxy Watch? With SmartThings, you can do that too. Plus, the Samsung Smart TV can be seamlessly integrated into the SmartThings platform, allowing you to control TV settings or even automate actions based on what’s happening on-screen.

From controlling lighting to checking your home’s energy usage, all of your Samsung devices can work together to create a personalised, connected environment.

Sustainability with SmartThings

SmartThings isn’t just about convenience – it’s also about sustainability.

Samsung uses event to demonstrate upcoming hyper-connectivity for business-centric displays as well as new Google EDLA-certified ‘WAD’ interactive display

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2024 in Barcelona is showcasing how SmartThings will bolster its B2B displays to shape the future of business connectivity. Samsung’s “SmartThings for Business” exhibition emphasizes the new advancements that the cutting-edge internet-of-things (IoT) platform will offer, as well as Samsung’s commitment to providing more connected, easy-to-control digital signage across industries.

“In a commercial display sector where operational efficiency is key, Samsung digital signage is leveraging SmartThings to deliver next-gen connectivity and features to organizations of all sizes,” said SW Yong, President and Head of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “This further expansion of the SmartThings ecosystem will serve to elevate experiences for customers and partners from a wide variety of industries.”

How Businesses Can Leverage Connected Tech Through SmartThings – From the Smart Store to Smart Office

At the event, Samsung is showcasing how SmartThings enables business owners to leverage their digital signage to connect and gain more control of their smart devices across various landscapes. By offering the SmartThings connectivity feature to commercial display products such as Smart Signage and Hotel TVs, users can experience the convenience of hyper-connectivity in their business environments. These changes will include Samsung smart devices, as well as other devices that support the industry’s latest IoT specifications, Matter and the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA).

Through the application of SmartThings to various business environments, Samsung contributes to the more efficient management of space and energy by transforming places of business into interconnected smart spaces. These connectivity improvements have been designed to benefit all types of business customers, from small and mid-sized business owners to enterprises. Examples of the smart spaces — including a smart store, smart office and smart hotel — are on display at Samsung’s booth at ISE 2024.

With the Routines feature, users can create desired environments by setting the optimal lighting, temperature, humidity, and air quality in advance, and easily maintain them over time with automated space management. For instance, a smart store can automatically turn the power supply on and off to align menu boards and lighting with operating hours.

Plus, SmartThings AI Energy Mode helps business owners stay eco-conscious by reducing energy usage through efficient asset management and advanced monitoring, such as turning off connected devices or dimming the lights during the day depending on power usage, occupancy and time.

To cater to diverse B2B customer needs, Samsung has expanded the SmartThings Enterprise API [1] for business owners. By leveraging the API, customers can easily connect SmartThings to their own management system and create a customized solution optimized for different scenarios or dashboards with the information they want. The customizable device ecosystem ensures seamless connectivity across a wide range of devices and enhances system reliability. A separate application for installers also makes the installation process easy, paying attention to the unique needs of B2B customers with different device owners.

In the case of a hotel or a conference room, where the device owner and the user may be different, the device owner can generate a web URL to share SmartThings features with the end users. This way, hotel guests and conference room users can easily enjoy the SmartThings experience without having to install an extra app. The device owner can also specify the use of authorization and duration of the connected device when generating a web URL.

Marking a significant step forward in connected technology for businesses, SmartThings for Business is set to be globally available during the first half of 2024. The platform will open new possibilities for efficient, smart management of various smart devices across all industries, offering tailored and intelligent device management solutions that cater to the unique needs of diverse business environments.

New Samsung Interactive Display Utilizes Access To Google Play Apps and Google Services for Unlimited Education Possibilities

During ISE, Samsung is also announcing its first Google Enterprise Devices Licensing Agreement (EDLA)-certified [2] interactive display (model name: WAD) expected to launch in the first half of 2024. Powered by Android 13, the WAD series — available in 65-, 75-, and 86-inch models — provides a seamless and intuitive learning experience for both teachers and students alike.

The WAD series offers an interactive classroom experience with a suite of educational tools. It provides access to numerous educational apps through Google Play, while also allowing access to various Google services, such as Google Classroom and Google Drive. The interactive display has the look and feel of a large tablet with a familiar and intuitive user interface (UI).

“We are thrilled to bring more Android EDLA-certified devices through our partnership with Samsung Electronics, expanding Android’s reach beyond consumers to schools and businesses,” said Scott Porter, Managing Director, Android Chrome Enterprise Partnerships at Google. “We look forward to a continued partnership with Samsung to provide innovative display solutions for classrooms and beyond.”

The WAD series has been meticulously engineered to meet various safety and reliability requirements in educational environments. The display offers enhanced protection [3] during electrical surges or high humidity, adopting various technical measures including a 500V (DC) capacitor to instantly absorb high voltage up to 500V, and a glass type fuse to prevent damage. The WAD series also applies anti-humidity glue to the critical area of the chipset to withstand humid conditions, making it a valuable tool for schools located in areas with high-humidity or rainy climates.

Additionally, Device Management Solution (DMS) offers remote monitoring and control of classroom displays, even when unforeseen circumstances arise, to enhance convenience in educational settings. With Advanced Messaging, the displays can immediately send important messages across campuses, classrooms and public spaces. Urgent communications can also be displayed on interactive whiteboards, so students and other personnel are alerted in real time.

Plus, the series includes an optional attachable Wi-Fi® module, catering to advanced security requirements for various sectors.

The WAD series has been designed with learning optimization as a key priority. It offers a natural writing experience with infrared (IR) touch and supports up to 40 simultaneous touchpoints. The slim design lets educators move the device more conveniently, and features such as Multi Window mode allows them to manage multiple windows within the interface. There is also a 3-in-1 USB-C port that simplifies connectivity and allows connected devices to be charged at up to 65W, plus an HDMI output that enables easy content sharing. For improved convenience, the series also comes with a front stereo speaker, penholder and handle.

Partnering With Cisco, Unveiling 105” 5K Smart Signage Optimized for Hybrid Work Experience

Samsung today also announced an expanded partnership alongside Cisco to deliver enhanced collaboration experiences for hybrid workers. As part of this new partnership, Samsung unveiled its new 105-inch, 21:9 Smart Signage QPD-5K model that is compatible with Cisco Room Kit EQ, which is certified for Microsoft Teams.

Samsung’s newly released 105” QPD-5K model comes with 5K [4] resolution and a 21:9 aspect ratio. It provides an intuitive, yet natural video conferencing experience ideal for hybrid workspaces. The QPD-5K is compatible with the Cisco Room Bar and Room Kit Series, creating an efficient meeting environment by integrating camera, audio and all other capabilities required for video conferencing.

“We’ve entered a new era in which hybrid work is an integral part of the work experience. Employees simply must be able to have full functionality while working online,” said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Our partnership with Cisco provides users with an accessible work environment, and at the center of that is our 105-inch QPD-5K display that gives users the feeling they are sitting in the same room as their colleagues.”

When connecting video conferencing devices certified for Microsoft Teams, such as Cisco’s RoomOS-powered systems [5], the QPD-5K model’s 21:9 aspect ratio optimizes Front Row experience, an inclusive meeting layout for Microsoft Teams Rooms. It ensures that all participants, whether joining remotely or in person, feel equally present and engaged in the discussion.

“In today’s era of hybrid work, it is essential that workspaces are reimagined to enable great collaboration. This means outfitting conference rooms with intelligent video systems designed to bring immersive collaboration experiences to all participants, regardless of their location,” said Jeetu Patel, EVP and General Manager, Security & Collaboration, Cisco. “Through our partnership with these industry leaders, we’re delivering something we call Distance Zero, eliminating second-class experiences no matter where you are working.”

Providing a panoramic view, the QPD-5K display offers a hyper-realistic and immersive visual experience in control rooms and classrooms, as well as in meeting rooms. It supports multiple windows to display more information and runs on Tizen OS for optimized performance of web services and industry-leading durability.

Users can also take advantage of a dual-screen video conferencing experience by connecting two Samsung 4K UHD Smart Signage series displays with Cisco’s newest solution, Cisco Room Kit EQX. This feature is available with QHC, QMC and QBC models ranging in size from 65 to 75 inches.
Samsung Unveils ‘Transparent Micro LED’ in Europe

At the event, Samsung first presented the Transparent MICRO LED in Europe, a groundbreaking innovation unveiled globally at CES 2024. This cutting-edge technology sets a new standard in the commercial display market with its exceptional transmittance and clarity, boasting an extremely small MICRO LED chip and precision manufacturing process that eliminates seams and light refraction. The transparent MICRO LED can be customized to any size or ratio, offering another level of customization for customers.

This technology is set to revolutionize the retail and exhibition spaces, with the display simultaneously showing important information while providing a view of actual products or creating a unique ambiance through its transparent surface. It presents new use cases and expands the limits of the screen experience once again.

Since the debut of The Wall in 2018 – a modular commercial display featuring MICRO LED technology not confined by size, resolution, or shape – Samsung has been the leader in LED display technology. The company’s unrivaled leadership in the technology and its craftsmanship, evident in ultra-fine pixel pitch and specialized applications in virtual production, continue to explore the infinite possibilities of the state-of-the-art display technology.
