One technology that is helping power these new consumer experiences is the health foundation model.

Researchers from the Digital Health Team at Samsung Research America (SRA) are developing new AI technologies to continuously understand a person’s health state from biosignals, generate health insights, and offer appropriate health guidance.

Samsung researchers recently introduced two foundation models based on wearable data: xMAE (Physiology-Aware Masked Cross-Modal Reconstruction for Biosignal Representation Learning), which learns the temporal relationship between different biosignals, and HiMAE (Hierarchical Masked Autoencoder), which understands health patterns across different time scales in wearable time-series data. Both studies demonstrate advancement of health AI models that can better understand the physiological relationships and temporal structure of biosignals.

Samsung’s work on xMAE and HiMAE models was accepted to the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML), and the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR), respectively, highlighting the significance of this research.

Health Foundation Models That Read the Body’s Signals: Why They Matter for Health

A health foundation model is an AI model that uses self-supervised learning to learn meaningful features from unlabeled biosignal data.

HiMAE AI model: Reading the Body at Every Time Scale on the Device

Health data measured from wearable devices can reveal different information depending on the time scale at which it is analysed. For example, short time segments can reveal rapidly changing signals such as heartbeats, while longer time segments can uncover patterns that accumulate over time, such as sleep or physical activity. This is similar to examining different information by zooming in and out of an image.

HiMAE is a self-supervised learning model that learns representation from wearable data across multiple time scales. It uses multiple encoders to analyse short and long segments separately, allowing the model to identify information required for each health task, such as heart rate analysis or sleep prediction, at the appropriate time scale. During training, the model reconstructs masked parts of the data. This enables it to learn key patterns in biosignals even when labeled data is limited.

A single pretrained HiMAE model handles classification, numerical prediction and data generation. The model achieved high performance while being smaller than existing models. It also improved computational efficiency to the point where it can produce results in less than one millisecond on a smartwatch-class central processing unit (CPU). Most importantly, HiMAE demonstrates the potential of on-device health foundation models for the first time—analysing raw health signals in real time, without relying on cloud servers.

Q: What were the key design considerations for this year’s Galaxy foldable line-up?

Today’s Galaxy devices are faster and more powerful than ever. We considered how we could go one step further to deliver a more natural and comfortable experience.

Slimness and lightness are essential to creating a comfortable user experience, since they influence how naturally a device opens, how comfortable it feels in the hand and how easily it fits into everyday life. That is why we consider not only the product itself, but also every moment of the user experience it creates.

From an aesthetic perspective, we applied the concept of “Emotive Geometry.” This design approach brings human warmth to Galaxy’s simple, refined forms, creating a balanced design that goes beyond powerful performance to connect with users on an emotional level.

Q: What drove the expansion of the Galaxy Z series portfolio?

Across seven generations of foldable innovation, we’ve gained a deeper understanding of how people use their devices. As user expectations for foldables have become more diverse, we have also recognised that no single foldable can meet every need – one size does not fit all.

Some users prioritise productivity and multitasking, while others value portability. Based on these insights, we expanded the Galaxy Z series line-up so each device could better serve different priorities.

Q: Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the slimmest Galaxy Z Fold yet[1]. What shaped its exceptionally slim design?

The design concept behind the newest Galaxy Z series is “Emotive Slim” — an approach that focuses not only on reducing thickness, but also on how slim it looks and feels in everyday use.

We applied a gentle slope to the frame to make the foldable easier to open and created a more curved outer silhouette for a softer, more comfortable grip. We also minimised the flat side profile to create a visually slimmer appearance.

Q: Why was a passport chosen as the design inspiration for the new Galaxy Z Fold8?

The classic passport is designed to be easy to carry, hold with one hand and read at a glance. Those same ergonomic principles shaped Galaxy Z Fold8, extending our focus on comfort throughout the device’s overall layout.

When folded, it features a 16:10 aspect ratio optimiszed for one-handed use. Unfolded, it becomes a more immersive 4:3 display with balanced symmetry.

Q: How were these colours chosen for the new Galaxy Z series?

Each colour was chosen to reflect the lifestyle of the people each device is designed for. Violet Shadow gives Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra a chic, sophisticated look, while Lavender brings freshness and softness to Galaxy Z Fold8. Pink adds vibrant, playful energy to Galaxy Z Flip8. Cream and Graphite round out the palette with timeless versatility.

Q: How did Samsung refine the design of Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Galaxy Watch9?

If a smartphone lives in the hand, a smartwatch delivers its greatest value when it’s comfortable enough to wear every day. That’s why our approach to the new Galaxy Watch series focused on refinement rather than reinvention, preserving our core design while enhancing the details that matter most.

At the centre of Galaxy Watch is the cushion design. More than a shape, it defines the watch’s identity by balancing presence with softness and precision with comfort. For Galaxy Watch Ultra2, we brought the screen, bezel and cushion body into a seamless form, creating a cleaner profile and a more premium look. We also carefully refined the spacing and tactile separation between the buttons, making each one easier to distinguish by touch and enabling precise control without looking at the screen.

Q: How have the bands on Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Galaxy Watch9 changed?

Bands play a critical role in wearability. For this generation, we made them lighter, thinner and more breathable with a new air pocket structure.

Because every wrist is different, we used computational design to validate comfort and fit. We refined the balance between the watch body and band for greater stability on the wrist, while expanded band options give users more ways to express their personal style.

Q: What design philosophy ties this year’s Galaxy devices together?

In an era shaped by AI-driven change, human-centered values are more important than ever. Design shouldn’t only be seen — it should also be felt. For design to feel truly human, it must begin with a deep understanding of how people live, work and interact with technology every day. That belief has guided our approach to designing foldables and smartwatches.

The days of the whole family gathering around a single television fighting for control of the remote could be numbered, with Samsung insights revealing a growing appetite amongst Australians for TVs that are portable and flexible enough to move with the household, rather than being anchored to one room.

One in four (26%) Australians say they now reach for their laptop, tablet or smartphone to watch a major broadcast event[1]. This insight reveals the modern device expectation of portability and instant access is extending to the family TV, which is finding itself being used by various members of the family beyond entertainment across the day.

Far from the structured family routines of the 1950’s when Australia experienced its first TV broadcast[2], Australian households today support flexible, fluid lifestyles of work, gaming and fitness alongside entertainment and relaxation at any given time. Of this lifestyle evolution, Samsung insights reveal 24% of Australians now use their TV to listen to podcasts or music, while almost one in five (16%) use their TV for fitness workouts, and 42% turn to it for gaming[3]. Further use cases of the TV also include supporting work at home and displaying art to elevate home décor.[4]

According to Simon Howe, Director – Visual Display, Samsung Australia, the insights show that Australians aren’t necessarily watching less TV, rather they’re watching differently. As Australian lifestyles have evolved, so too must the TV adapt to fit around the way Australians live and the content they’re engaging with.

“The TV has traditionally been designed around the room it sits in and has undergone various transformations over the years to help the TV elevate and optimise those spaces. But Australians aren’t living room by room anymore and the content they’re watching isn’t always shot in landscape formats,” said Mr Howe. “They might be working in one space, streaming vertical social content in another, bonding with family somewhere else, and switching between other activities throughout the day. It’s time to rethink the assumption that a TV has to stay in one place or compromise full-screen experiences to support family life.”

Samsung’s answer is the Movingstyle, a new 27-inch portable Smart Touch Screen TV that rotates between horizontal and vertical orientation and can be moved from room to room,[5] adapting to activities across a household – from a vertically filmed workout video in the morning, to a recipe propped up in the kitchen at lunchtime, to a portable workstation in the afternoon, to an evening relaxation device.

According to Mr Howe, the Movingstyle’s design responds to a broader shift in Australian tastes, not just behaviour. Samsung insights show that 63% of Australians want technology that suits their personal style[6]. Further, one in ten (10%) are craving TVs designed to be rollable, flexible and portable[7].

Samsung To Spotlight 2027 Odyssey Lineup at Gamescom 2026

Samsung will present the 2027 Odyssey lineup for the first time during its dedicated Gamescom 2026 session, “#PlaySamsung: The Next Era of Gaming Displays,” at 10:30AM CET / 6:30PM on AEST on 27 Aug. The session will explore how screen size, resolution, refresh rate, and display modes suit different games and play styles.

The Odyssey OLED G9 (G95SJ model) and Odyssey OLED G7 (G75SJ model) will be unveiled on stage, while the Odyssey OLED G8 (G80SJ model) and Odyssey G6 (G60H model) will be introduced on-screen during the keynote[1].

As a part of the session, Samsung will also spotlight its HDR10+ GAMING[2] partnership with Activision Blizzard, bringing richer HDR gameplay into the development process for Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 4. The technology helps compatible Odyssey monitors and Samsung displays deliver colour and contrast that more accurately reflect the creative intent of each game[3]. Samsung plans to expand the HDR10+ GAMING ecosystem to more than 20 AAA titles by the first half of 2027.[4]

The company will also showcase its expanding Odyssey 3D game support, developed through direct collaboration with game studios. New supported titles, including Cyberpunk 2077 and Cronos: The New Dawn, will be presented on stage to demonstrate how Odyssey 3D adds depth and spatial perspective to detailed game worlds.

The Odyssey OLED G9 is Samsung’s first 49-inch DQHD gaming monitor with a 360 Hz refresh rate[5]. It features a fifth-generation QD-OLED panel with Penta Tandem technology.[6]

The Odyssey OLED G8 is a 32-inch UHD OLED gaming monitor that pairs QD-OLED picture quality with a top refresh rate of 360 Hz for fast, fluid gameplay and Triple Mode support. It features a fifth-generation QD-OLED panel with Penta Tandem technology6 and RGB Stripe subpixels, and players can switch between UHD at 360 Hz, QHD at 520 Hz and FHD at 680 Hz to balance resolution and speed based on the game, device, and performance settings. The company introduced the new P Series at Gamescom 2026, the world’s largest gaming event, held in Cologne, Germany from 26 – 30 Aug.

P9: Up to Twice the Performance With USB41

P9 is Samsung’s first 8TB USB4 portable SSD designed for professional production workflows, storing and editing large image and video files. Image simulated for illustrative purposes.

Powered by USB4, the flagship P9 delivers sequential read speeds[2] of up to 4,000 megabytes-per-second (MB/s) and sequential write speeds of up to 3,800MB/s, offering industry-leading transfer performance. Its sequential read and write speeds are approximately twice those of the previous generation. For comparison, the 4-terabyte (TB) T9, featuring a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface, delivers sequential read and write speeds of up to 2,000MB/s.

P7: Fast, Versatile Storage for Everyday Use

Also featuring USB4 technology, the P7 is designed to provide fast and convenient storage across work, entertainment, and everyday use. It offers broad compatibility with a wide range of host devices, including desktops, laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles, and cameras.

The P7 has completed 2-metre drop testing as well as shock and vibration durability testing[3], helping users keep important data protected during travel, outdoor activities, and other mobile environments.

Availability

The Samsung Portable SSD P Series will be available in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB capacities, with a global rollout beginning September. Pricing and availability in Australia is yet to be announced.
