Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world’s leading TV manufacturer for 16 consecutive years,* announced that many of its 2022 Neo QLEDs earned the ‘Reducing CO2’ certification from the Carbon Trust in recognition of its efforts to reduce the products’ carbon footprint.

The Carbon Trust is a global climate consultancy driven by the mission to accelerate the move to a decarbonised future. The ‘Reducing CO2’ certification signifies that a product’s carbon footprint is reducing year-on-year. It evaluates the amount of GHG(Greenhouse Gas) generated throughout the entire product lifecycle using internationally recognized standards[1].

This year, 11 models across Samsung’s 2022 TV lineup (9 of which will be available in Australia), including three Neo QLED 8K models, three Neo QLED 4K models, two QLED models, two Lifestyle TV models, and one Crystal UHD TV model, obtained the certification by reducing the weight of the product and the power consumption during the use phase.

Samsung has long been committed to not only driving product innovation but also shaping and implementing environmental sustainability technologies. During Samsung’s keynote event at CES 2022, Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of Samsung Electronic’s Device eXperience (DX) Division, unveiled the company’s vision of “Together for Tomorrow”, highlighting Samsung’s commitment to creating a sustainable future and driving collaboration as part of the global community to preserve our planet.

As part of the initiative, Samsung’s Visual Display Business is set to use around 30 times more recycled plastics to produce its display products than it did in 2021. Samsung also revealed its plan to expand the use of recycled materials in all of their mobile and home appliance products by 2025.

In addition, Samsung has been adopting various sustainable practices to minimize the environmental impacts throughout its products’ lifecycles. The company’s ‘Eco-Packaging’ program – which allows consumers to upcycle the packaging for TV products into versatile pieces of furniture – has been upgraded this year with product packaging using 90% less ink while also removing the staples during production.[2]

Samsung has also expanded the SolarCell Remote, which eliminates battery waste with built-in solar panels, to all TV models in 2022. Additionally, Samsung has developed and applied a new material, partially made with repurposed ocean-bound plastics, to a 2022 high resolution monitor S8to reduce marine waste and minimize the environmental footprint.

The Freestyle offers incredible technology and flexibility to deliver optimal viewing and entertainment for customers looking to bring video and audio content wherever they go.

Targeted toward Gen Z and millennials, The Freestyle is a projector, smart speaker and ambient lighting device all rolled into one lightweight, portable device. For powering it up, The Freestyle is compatible with power banks that support USB-PD and 50W/20V output or above, so users can take it with them anywhere, even when they are on the move.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today unveiled its vision for the future, “Together for tomorrow,” during a pre-show keynote event at CES 2022. Keynote speaker Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of DX (Device eXperience) Division at Samsung, highlighted the company’s efforts to usher in a new age of togetherness, with customizable experiences that reflect consumers’ evolving lifestyles, and innovations that mark progress for both society and the planet.

The company’s “Together for tomorrow” vision is one that empowers everyone to create positive change and drives collaborations that address some of the planet’s most pressing challenges. The keynote illustrated how Samsung plans to make its vision a reality by introducing a range of sustainability initiatives, purposeful partnerships, and customizable and connected technologies.

Building a Sustainable Future

At its core, Samsung’s vision for the future is built on what the company calls “everyday sustainability.” It is a concept that inspires Samsung to put sustainability at the heart of everything it does. The company has been realizing its vision by adopting new, low-impact product manufacturing practices, footprint-reducing packaging and a more sustainable customer experience, and by responsibly disposing of products at the end of their lifecycles.

Samsung’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions throughout the production cycle have also earned recognition from the Carbon Trust, the world’s leading authority on carbon footprint. Last year, the company’s Carbon Trust-certified memory chips helped reduce carbon emissions by nearly 700,000 tons.

Samsung’s efforts in this area extend well beyond semiconductors and include expanding the use of recycled materials. To introduce everyday sustainability to more products, Samsung’s Visual Display Business plans to use 30 times more recycled plastics than it did in 2021. The company also revealed plans to expand its use of recycled materials to include all mobile products and home appliances over the next three years.

In 2021, all of Samsung’s TV boxes included recycled materials. For this year, the company revealed that it will be expanding the use of recycled materials to include the boxes’ interior packaging as well. Now, recycled materials will be incorporated into Styrofoam, box holders and plastic bags. The company also announced the global expansion of its award-winning Eco-Packaging program. The expansion of the program, which transforms cardboard boxes into cat houses, side tables, and other useful furniture items, will include packaging for home appliances such as vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, air purifiers and more.

Samsung is also building sustainability into the ways that customers experience its products. Such experiences will be integral to empowering people to reduce their carbon footprint and make positive changes together for a better tomorrow. As an example, the company introduced notable enhancements to its first-of-its-kind SolarCell Remote, which eliminates battery waste with a built-in solar panel that can be charged during both day and night.

The enhanced SolarCell Remote gets electricity from radio frequencies in devices like Wi-Fi routers[1]. “What’s more, it will be included in more Samsung products – like new Samsung TVs and home appliances – with the goal of eliminating more than 200 million batteries from landfills[2]. When you line them up, it is the distance from right here, Las Vegas, to Korea,” said Han.

In addition, by 2025, Samsung plans to make all of its TVs and phone chargers operate on near zero standby power, so that the products will consume almost no energy when not being used.

E-waste is another big challenge for the electronics industry, which is why Samsung has collected more than five million tons of e-waste since 2009. For mobile products, last year, Samsung launched Galaxy for the Planet, a sustainability platform that was created to bring about tangible climate action and minimize devices’ environmental footprints throughout their lifecycles.

“These are important steps,” said Han, “but we cannot achieve our goals alone. We believe open innovation and collaboration are keys to fighting climate change and protecting our environment.” With this in mind, Samsung announced that its eco-conscious technologies like the SolarCell Remote will be made open source, so that others can utilize them for their new devices too.

Samsung’s decision to make such technologies openly available reflects a commitment to innovation – and to everyday sustainability – that transcends industries. The collaboration with Patagonia that Samsung announced at the keynote demonstrates the type of innovation that can result when companies – even those from entirely different industries – come together to address environmental issues. The innovative solution that the companies are designing will help fight plastic pollution by enabling Samsung washing machines to minimize microplastics from entering waterways through laundry cycles.

“This is a serious problem, and not one we can solve on our own,” said Vincent Stanley, Director of Philosophy at Patagonia. Commending the hard work and dedication of Samsung engineers, Stanley described the working relationship as “a perfect example of the kind of collaboration we all need to help turn the tide of climate change and restore nature to health.”

“We are thrilled about this collaboration, but our work won’t stop there,” added Han. “We will continue to explore new partnerships and collaborations, aiming to address the challenges facing our planet.”

Empowering Users with Customized Experiences

In addition to describing steps it is taking to advance everyday sustainability, Samsung outlined various ways it is advancing technology to cater to consumers’ diverse needs. Understanding that each person is unique and wants to customize their devices to suit their lifestyle, Samsung strives to find ways to help people redefine their relationships with everyday technologies. This people-first approach to innovation is a key pillar of the company’s “Together for tomorrow” vision.

The platforms and screens that Samsung unveiled at the event reflect the ‘Screens Everywhere, Screens for All’ era that Han alluded to at CES 2020. The Freestyle is a lightweight and portable screen that gives you a cinema-quality experience no matter where you are. Featuring AI-enabled sound, built-in streaming apps and a host of useful Smart TV accessibility features, The Freestyle can be set up virtually anywhere and projects up to 100 inches.

To enable different types of smart devices to work better with each other, Samsung announced plans to make SmartThings Hub a built-in feature of its 2022 TVs, Smart Monitors and Family Hub refrigerators. Available in a range of sizes, configurations and colours, Samsung’s Bespoke French Door refrigerator brings Bespoke customisation and a sleek flat-front design to one of the most preferred refrigerator types. Expanding on the existing Bespoke refrigerator lineup, which includes the Bespoke 4-Door Flex, Bespoke 2-Door Bottom Freezer and Bespoke 1-Door Flex Column, this latest addition helps to ensure that there is a Bespoke refrigerator option to suit every family’s needs. The Bespoke French Door refrigerator will be available in 3-door and 4-door configurations – in both full and counter-depth models – and includes options featuring the upgraded Family Hub^® for 2022[2].

With 12 colors and two finishes – glass and steel – to choose from, the Bespoke French Door refrigerator features thousands of color combinations. In glass, new colors include White, Grey, Pink, Charcoal, Morning Blue, Clementine and Sunrise Yellow. In a steel finish, new colors include Tuscan, Matte Black, Navy, Emerald Green and Stainless Steel[3].

To help families better store and preserve their meals, the Bespoke French Door refrigerator comes packed with Samsung’s latest storage and cooling innovations. The Beverage Center and Dual Auto Ice Maker give users quick access to cold drinks, while the FlexZone^® keeps ingredients at the optimal temperature to help ensure they stay fresh.

With a wide range of smart features, Family Hub brings entertainment into the kitchen and helps families stay organised and connected. In 2022, Family Hub^® will support Samsung TV Plus, providing free TV content and seamless continuous viewing experiences with other screens like Samsung Smart TVs and Galaxy devices[4].

Family Hub^® for 2022 will also support Alexa in select regions[5], meaning consumers can access various Amazon services, including Amazon Music and smart water filter reordering services, on their refrigerators. View Inside has also been upgraded with internal camera technology for utilising information on food labels, allowing families to view fridge contents, manage expiration dates, and more.

Bespoke Washer and Dryer

Designed to introduce Bespoke to the laundry room, the Bespoke Washer and Dryer include cutting-edge smart features that make doing laundry more intuitive and efficient. Both devices feature a flat-front design and are available in multiple color options, including black and navy.

By learning usage patterns and laundry routines, the AI-powered Smart Dial prioritises frequently used settings, minimising work and simplifying the washing and drying process. Meanwhile, the intelligent AI OptiWash function optimises wash settings as well as time and detergent levels for each load, taking the guesswork out of laundry. With MultiControl, users can easily use both the smart washer and dryer from the washer control panel when units are stacked.

Samsung Electronics has today announced the launch of its first-ever Bespoke French Door Refrigerator and Bespoke Jet Vacuum, to be unveiled at CES 2022 and available in Australia.

The Bespoke range will provide Australians with innovative, stunningly designed and customisable products for their homes.

The Bespoke Refrigerator line up will be available in an array of modular formats including the premium French Door style, and a range of stunning colours to offer customisation in both form and design. The Samsung Bespoke range allows you to tailor your fridge needs according to the size, space and style of your home.

Bespoke Jet^TM will debut in Australia in February, the beautiful ergonomically-designed stick vacuum is lightweight yet powerful and features an integrated All-in-One Clean Station, which hygienically takes care of dust disposal from the bin without dirt escaping back into the air while simultaneously also stores and charges.

On January 4, Samsung Electronics will kick off the 2022 edition of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) with a pre-show keynote address held a day before the world’s most influential technology event is set to begin.

Taking place at 6:30 p.m. local time (9:30 p.m. EST) at the Venetian’s Palazzo Ballroom in Las Vegas, the keynote will be delivered by Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of Samsung Electronics’ DX (Device eXperience) Division.

Held under the theme of ‘Together for Tomorrow’, the keynote will showcase ways that we can help build a more sustainable planet, and demonstrate customized and connected experiences that can enrich people’s lives.
