As those technologies evolved, Samsung focused on another challenge: making a large-screen foldable easier to carry every day, without losing the experiences that make the form factor unique.

And through that pursuit, Galaxy Z Fold5 weighed 253 grams, and Galaxy Z Fold6 reduced its weight further to 239 grams.

With Galaxy Z Fold7 came an even more ambitious goal:

“Could a foldable be lighter than a bar-type flagship smartphone?”

At the time, Galaxy S25 Ultra — one of Samsung’s flagship bar-type smartphones — weighed 218 grams. The development team set an even lighter target for Galaxy Z Fold7: 215 grams.

Galaxy Z Fold7 reached that goal at 215 grams. Building on years of foldable innovation, Galaxy Z Fold8 combines a new form factor with advances in core technologies, materials and internal architecture to weigh just 201 grams[1] — 52 grams lighter than Galaxy Z Fold5. At 201 grams, Galaxy Z Fold8 is the world’s lightest foldable. [2]

But consumers expected more than just a lighter foldable.

A 2024 YouGov survey found that a bulky or heavy design remained a concern among consumers not planning to purchase foldables, while battery life, durability and display quality ranked as top priorities for those considering them[3].

This insight shaped a core engineering goal for Samsung: make foldables thinner and lighter, while maintaining the core experiences users value most.

Battery life, camera performance, thermal management and durability still had to advance.

That could not be achieved by changing a single component. Samsung engineers had to reimagine the entire device — advancing fundamental foldable technologies, introducing new materials and revisiting hundreds of components and auxiliary parts to the fraction-of-a-gram level.

From 253 grams to 201 grams. Three engineering innovations enabled that transformation.

The Thinner and Lighter a Foldable Gets, the More Precise the Engineering Must Become

Making a foldable thinner and lighter brings a new set of engineering challenges.

The layers inside the display need to become thinner while still meeting Samsung’s durability and reliability requirements.The metal plate supporting the display needs to stay extremely flat even as it becomes thinner. And the hinge has to manage the forces created every time the device folds and unfolds, while being designed around the size and structure of each product.

Across generations, Samsung has continued to advance the display layers, ultra-thin metal precision machining and hinge technologies central to its foldable devices.

One example is Flex Titanium.

The displays in Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra use Flex Titanium technology featuring a Titanium Alloy Film designed for the foldable display structure.

The film is just tens of micrometers thick — roughly one-third the width of a human hair. Its material and structure work together to maintain performance at this extreme thickness.

The metal plate that supports the display presents a different challenge.

Some metal plates are machined to approximately 0.2 millimeters thick, with the thinnest sections reaching 0.15 millimeters. At that level, simply making the metal thinner is not enough. Thin metal can bend or warp more easily during machining, and even a small change in shape can affect assembly precision or the surface quality of the display.

What matters is the ability to machine ultra-thin metal at around 0.2 millimeters while consistently achieving the required shape and flatness.

Samsung refined the machining sequence, tooling, cooling conditions and process parameters, breaking the process into multiple stages to maintain precision.

The hinge requires the same level of care.

Beyond simply opening and closing the phone, it must distribute the forces created by repeated folding and unfolding across the device while maintaining structural stability.

And these requirements vary by product size and architecture.

Samsung engineers the hinge for each form factor, carefully balancing load distribution, strength, durability, internal space and weight rather than just scaling it down from one generation to the next.

Creating a thinner and lighter foldable requires more than downsizing individual parts.

It comes from greater precision in how materials are machined, how forces are managed and how structures are designed within a limited space.

Lighter, Built for Strength — Starting With the Materials

The second area is materials innovation.

Different parts of a foldable have very different jobs. Some demand high rigidity. Some must withstand repeated movement. Others need to spread heat efficiently.

Samsung selects and develops materials around those specific needs, delivering the performance each requires while optimising weight and space.

In Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Flex Titanium incorporates a Titanium Alloy Film to support the foldable display structure.

For the exterior, Samsung uses Advanced Armour Aluminum[4], helping provide the strength and durability needed in a thin and lightweight frame.

Materials also play an important role in thermal management.

As a device gets thinner, there is less room to manage the heat generated inside. Samsung uses graphite with improved thermal performance, while tailoring the overall thermal structure to the size and performance requirements of each product.

In Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, which has similar overall dimensions to Galaxy Z Fold7, the volume of the graphite heat-dissipation layer was increased by approximately 7% to help support its enhanced performance.

Samsung also applies Clad Metal inside the rear of the device. By combining the characteristics of different metals, the material helps reduce weight while providing the thermal performance required within a thin structure.

Materials innovation is therefore not just about choosing lighter options, but about using the right material in the right place to deliver the performance each part needs with less weight and space.

Looking Again at the Entire Device — Down to 0.001 Grams

Only so much can be achieved through core technologies and new materials alone.

In a foldable already packed with highly integrated components, finding the next few grams means looking again at almost everything inside the device.

Samsung engineers reviewed approximately 270 components and more than 180 types of auxiliary parts.

This spanned everything from the display, hinge and cameras to circuit boards, antennas, brackets, tapes and fasteners.

The precision extended to reductions of 0.1 grams and 0.1 millimeters, and in some auxiliary parts, as little as 0.001 grams.

The printed circuit board, or PCB, was redesigned to remove unnecessary circuits, improve component layout and minimise its footprint.

The MFC(Magnetic Flux Channel) antenna was also reimagined to reduce unnecessary overlap and interference with surrounding components, allowing the limited internal space to be used more efficiently.

Every auxiliary part, no matter how small, was examined.

Of the more than 180 types previously used, approximately 15 were eliminated.

Engineers then reviewed the remaining 170 types trimming oversized areas, refining shapes and optimising dimensions. Multiple parts were consolidated into single structures where possible.

In some cases, the savings were measured in increments as small as 0.001 grams.

Each change seems minor in isolation, but repeated across the device, fractions of a gram become tenths of a gram, then whole grams.

The weight savings on a finished device result from hundreds of small engineering decisions.

Finding 6 Grams Again to Make Room for More

The goal was to reinvest the weight and space recovered through engineering into the capabilities people actually experience — including the battery, cameras and thermal system.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra provides a separate example of how this approach can be applied.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold7 have similar overall dimensions and both weigh 215 grams. But within that same weight, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra increases battery capacity from 4,400 mAh[5] to 5,000 mAh[6]

That larger battery brought its own challenge: the battery itself added approximately 6 grams.

So the development team faced a new question:

“Where could we find those 6 grams again?”

There was no single component that could provide the answer.

Instead, engineers applied the same systematic approach across the entire device — materials and structures, circuit layouts and component placement, down to the smallest auxiliary parts — identifying weight savings across all components.

This strategy extended to internal space optimisation.

By reducing unnecessary overlap between the display, circuits, antennas and surrounding components, and by improving packaging efficiency, Samsung created room for a larger battery and enhanced thermal and camera systems.

As a result, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra accommodates a 5,000 mAh battery[5]while increasing the volume of its graphite heat-dissipation layer by approximately 7% compared with the similarly sized Galaxy Z Fold7.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra features a 200 MP main camera and introduces the first 50 MP Ultra-Wide camera on a Galaxy Z Fold device.

Samsung’s approach to a thinner and lighter foldable is therefore not about removing capabilities.

It is about redirecting weight and space savings toward the flagship experiences users value most.

From 253 Grams to 201 Grams: Redefining the Weight Standard for Foldables

The journey began with the first Galaxy Fold at 276 grams in 2019. Across eight generations, Samsung has continued to advance the technologies, materials and internal architecture behind the foldable experience.

In recent generations, that progress accelerated — from 253 grams with Galaxy Z Fold5 to 201 grams with Galaxy Z Fold8.

How have seven generations of user insights shaped Samsung’s approach to the latest Galaxy Z series?

From the beginning, we saw foldables as an opportunity to redefine how people interact with their smartphones — not simply as a new form factor. Through seven generations, we’ve learned how people open, carry, unfold and rely on their devices. Those insights have shaped our engineering priorities and guided each new generation of the Galaxy Z series.

Over time, three priorities became clear: larger, more immersive displays; thinner and lighter devices without compromising durability; and ultra performance while preserving the unique advantages of the foldable form factor. Delivering all three became the defining engineering challenge behind the latest Galaxy Z series.

Samsung describes foldable innovation as engineering one connected system. What does that mean in practice?

With foldables, every component is interconnected. Making a device thinner, for example, means redesigning the display, hinge, battery, thermal system and internal architecture together. Rather than optimising individual parts separately, we engineer the entire device as one connected system. This end-to-end engineering philosophy extends from materials and component design to manufacturing, validation and the final product experience — allowing engineering advancements to become improvements people experience every day.

Samsung engineered each of the latest foldables as one connected system to bring about key improvements for users.

The new Galaxy Z series introduces Flex Titanium technology. What engineering challenges did it solve?

Our goal was to make foldables thinner and lighter without compromising durability or the viewing experience. That required us to rework the display support structure protecting the ultra-thin OLED panel while preserving the flexibility needed for repeated folding.

Used in demanding industries such as aerospace, titanium offered the strength and resistance against permanent deformation essential for a foldable display. But selecting the material was only the beginning. The real challenge was developing the processing, structural design and manufacturing expertise needed to make titanium suitable for repeated folding.

Flex Titanium technology allows the display to be thinner and more durable while reducing crease visibility.

Flex Titanium combines two titanium-based elements. The titanium plate beneath the display serves as the primary structural support, helping absorb pressure and impacts from both the front and rear of the device. A precision-engineered lattice structure — created through a hybrid manufacturing process — allows the plate to remain flexible while maintaining structural strength. Beneath the display panel, the titanium-alloy film provides the strength, flexibility and elastic recovery needed to support repeated everyday folding, even at a thickness of just tens of micrometers — roughly one-third the thickness of a human hair.

Flex Titanium technology features an exceptionally thin titanium-alloy film and precision-engineered titanium plate.

Together, these innovations strengthened the display support structure while reducing display module thickness by 10%, creating additional space for the battery, thermal system and camera. For users, that translates into a thinner, lighter device[1] with a flatter display and reduced crease visibility.

How did Samsung reinvent the battery system for the latest Galaxy Z series?

Users expect longer battery life, faster charging and a thinner foldable — without compromising safety, stability or long-term reliability. Meeting those expectations required reengineering the battery system, not simply increasing battery capacity.

We introduced a silicon-carbon anode to improve energy density, but the innovation extends beyond the anode. Because silicon-carbon materials are more reactive, maintaining long-term stability under high-voltage conditions meant optimising the entire battery system. Improvements to the display structure also created additional internal space, allowing us to redesign the battery system while preserving a slimmer form factor. As a result, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra features a 5,000 mAh battery[2].

The same philosophy shaped charging. Rather than applying a single solution across the lineup, we developed charging architectures tailored to each foldable form factor. Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold8 use a dual-path charging architecture that helps distribute power more efficiently across the battery system, enabling faster, more stable and reliable charging while improving heat management. This supports 45 W fast charging on Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. For Galaxy Z Flip8, the charging architecture was separately optimised for the unique spatial and thermal requirements of its compact form factor.

To ensure foldables can withstand years of everyday use, how does Samsung validate durability before bringing a device to market?

For us, durability isn’t just about design — it must be proven through testing. We validated the complete foldable system under conditions that reflect how people use their devices. Our goal was to understand how the complete device performs in everyday use, identify potential issues before they reach customers and build foldables people can trust.

Looking back at the entire development process, how would you describe Samsung’s approach behind the Galaxy Z series?

Everything starts with the user. Over seven generations, we’ve transformed user insights into innovations in materials, components and the overall device experience. That philosophy continues to guide the Galaxy Z series — delivering foldables that are thinner, more durable, more capable and more intuitive year after year.

Australians are redefining what it means to live a multi-dimensional life. New research[1] from Samsung Electronics Australia reveals that one in four Millennials are pursuing a side hustle, and nearly one in five Gen MZ (Millennials and Gen Z) are diving into content creation.

The research paints a vivid picture of Gen MZ as a generation that defies traditional labels, choosing instead to embrace multidimensional identities and live life on the flip side. Nearly half (48%) proudly identify as professionals, yet their sense of self extends far beyond the workplace. Many also see themselves as travellers (28%), connectors (25%), nurturers (24%), gamers (21%), fitness enthusiasts (16%), and creatives (16%) – a snapshot of passions that reflect a desire to explore every facet of life. This appetite for variety and self-expression is what defines how Gen MZ prefers to live on the flip side, blurring boundaries and reimagining what it means to thrive in today’s world.

Rather than compartmentalising their time into rigid blocks, almost 30% Gen MZ report blending work, play, and personal growth throughout the day, challenging the conventional 9-to-5 model and embracing a more fluid, experience-led lifestyle.

This shift also highlights a generation committed to personal growth and self-expression with almost half engage in wellness activities and 40% focus on learning and skill-building.

With the recent launch of the brand’s slimmest foldables: the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7, Samsung is here to empower the multi-hyphenate generation with the tools they need to successfully embrace every facet of their lives – no matter what that might be.

The rapid rise and popularity of AI technology has had many companies racing to jump on the wagon. Yet for Samsung, AI is not new. We have been building intelligent connectivity into our devices for over a decade, as part of our continuous efforts to deliver deep and meaningful benefits to users through our technology and innovation. Having unveiled our “AI for All” vision at CES 2025 earlier this year, Samsung is on a mission to empower users through AI at every touchpoint.

We recently sat down with CU Kim, President and CEO of Southeast Asia & Oceania (SEAO), at Samsung Electronics, to discuss Samsung’s distinctive approach to AI in one of the world’s most diverse and dynamic regions. What emerges is a picture of innovation grounded in a deep understanding and vision of AI’s role in creating impactful, personal everyday experiences.

Q: How would you describe Samsung’s approach to AI in Southeast Asia and Oceania region?

A: We’re focused on democratising AI so that it delivers genuine value to consumers across different price points, regardless of their level of technical literacy. Today, 77% of SEAO users of Galaxy AI-powered devices are using our variety of Galaxy AI[1] features[2], which are available not just on our latest flagship models, but also on previous flagship models, FE and Tab series[3]. Users of our affordable A series range[4] can also enjoy AI features such as Circle to Search with Google[5] and Best Face[6] which selects and combines the best expressions for up to five people from a motion photo for a perfect shot.

What sets our approach apart is how we’re integrating AI to solve real challenges that consumers face. Take communication, for instance. Our translation features, which break down language barriers, is a useful tool to navigate our region’s incredible linguistic diversity. Our on-device Galaxy AI features can also operate independently without requiring constant cloud connectivity[7] – providing a reliable experience for SEAO users regardless of varying network infrastructure across the region.

Looking beyond mobile, we are extending this intelligence to our entire ecosystem of devices and appliances. Home AI learns from your habits and routines to develop a hyper-personalised smart home experience for you. This is underpinned by SmartThings[8], our smart home platform that connects and creates truly intelligent homes so you can have full control over your living space.

Q: How do you see AI transforming the landscape across Southeast Asia and Oceania?

A: With AI technology, consumers today have higher expectations of their day-to-day experiences whether in terms of efficiency, seamlessness and ease of use. For example, internal data is showing that AI capabilities such as the AI ProVisual Engine and Enhanced Search capabilities were the most sought-after AI features on our Galaxy S25 series among both Samsung and non-Samsung users. Even in households, consumers are looking out for smart features and functions when considering TV purchases[9], such as our latest line-up of OLED and Neo QLED TVs, which deliver a personalised and advanced viewing experience through their AI features.

In our region, we are deeply passionate about creating new possibilities for the next generation who are embracing AI with remarkable enthusiasm, optimism, and even a touch of resilience. In fact, based on a recent survey we conducted[10], a staggering 9 out of 10 youths in Southeast Asia are already incorporating AI tools and services into their day to day, whether for learning, creative tasks, staying informed, or more altruistic purposes like driving positive change in their communities. And while 65% of youth believe that AI will create new job opportunities, they are likewise cognisant that some jobs will inevitably disappear – further taking concrete steps to learn more about AI and develop AI-related skills.

Q: For businesses and organisations, how will AI shape Samsung’s growth strategy in the SEAO region?

A: The opportunities for businesses and organisations to tap into and benefit from AI in our region are tremendous. With SEAO’s rapidly developing digital infrastructure, businesses here are uniquely positioned to leapfrog legacy systems and implement AI-driven solutions from the ground up.

We want to bring our best AI-powered digital solutions to business partners. Through initiatives like SmartThings Pro[11], we are enabling businesses to create intelligent environments that enhance operational efficiency and customer experiences. This B2B platform is set to transform new categories and industries – for example, providing personalised and sustainable hospitality experiences to hotel guests; or enabling the remote management of displays and devices across multiple buildings in commercial facilities, from shopping malls to educational institutions.

That said, a key element of our B2B strategy is not just our technology, it’s our openness to foster close partnerships to create customised AI solutions that deliver meaningful outcomes. In Indonesia, we recently launched the Samsung Digital Lighthouse School program together with two schools, Al Muslim Bekasi and Salman Al Farisi Bandung, to enhance the learning experiences of over 2,500 students through the Galaxy Tab S and A Series.

Q: What excites you the most about upcoming innovations and what’s next for Samsung?

A: I’m particularly excited to see how our innovations empower communities to elevate passions. Gaming enthusiasts for example, will love the transformed mobile gaming experience on the Galaxy S25 series, with console-quality visuals enabled by features like ProScaler[12] and advanced Ray Tracing, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite[13] for Galaxy processor.

Gaming is very important to us at Samsung, and we have partnered with Moonton Games to bring the first-ever MLBB Campus Series tournament to student gamers in SEA. This is part of Samsung’s Galaxy Gaming Academy[14] efforts to champion the next generation of esports players.

When it comes to everyday living, we have moved beyond simple device control to creating intelligent environments that anticipate needs. Samsung Health[15] and SmartThings⁷ can optimise sleep environments by automatically adjusting temperature and humidity based on users’ sleep patterns and the environmental conditions they live in[16].

By maintaining our focus on accessibility, personalisation and security, we’re working to ensure that AI becomes a trusted companion that empowers instead of complicating daily life. Our upcoming innovations like the new Galaxy S25 Edge smartphone and the Bespoke AI home appliances with SmartThings⁷, for example, will continue to embody this commitment. The future of AI is not about replacing human capability but enhancing them. At Samsung, we are privileged to be building that future together with the communities across SEAO in time to come.

Samsung Electronics Australia today announced a market-first, extensive brand experience with Westfield Sydney. The partnership with Scentre Group BrandSpace marks the expansion of Galaxy AI, with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Flip6, and the start of pre-order, revealed at the #SamsungUnpacked event in Paris, France late last week.

Proudly activating in the heart of the Sydney CBD, and Australia’s premiere, world-class, retail destination and one of the country’s highest-foot traffic retail hubs[1], the Samsung partnership with Westfield Sydney aims to create an unmissable and immersive, retail brand experience. The experience consists of a mix of out of home (OOH) and an experiential activation. With unprecedented share of voice across the entire centre from shop floor to the street, the partnership will entail of five 3D Enabled Creative SuperScreens, 59 SmartScreens, 27 Digital Directories, and branded prominence across building structures including columns/pillars, valet hoarding, concierge, escalators, staircases and 160 dining precinct tables. Further extending across the wider shopping district surrounds, and in a market first partnership with QMS, Samsung will have 120 panels across Pitt Street and the broader Sydney Central Business District, resulting in a complete footprint.

The Samsung retail brand experience at Westfield Sydney will be live from the new Galaxy Z Series’ pre-order, 11 July through to 25 July, with an expected 1.16 million customer visits on average through the centre on any given fortnight[2]. The partnership aims for the new Z Series and Ecosystem to be unmissable, by leveraging in a market-first all spaces available at Westfield Sydney to create interactive experiences that enable an interactive and innovative showcase of Samsung’s pioneering Galaxy AI.

At the centre of the immersive brand partnership for the duration of the Z Series’ launch weekend (11 July-14 July), was also a disruptive and irreverent activation, completing the brand partnership’s mission to capture visitor attention. Coined the Impossible Selfie, starring, ‘Sweet Ben’, a furry, pink, playground-dwelling creature, intended to be so cute and irresistible, consumers simply had to take a photo with it, but so big it’s impossible to take at arm’s reach. Huggable, soft, and instantly loveable, ‘Sweet Ben’ aimed to highlight the Samsung Galaxy Z Series’ latest cutting-edge tech, and its new capability, FlexCam with Auto Zoom – a Galaxy AI enabled feature that can not only take the photo, but frame it for you, ensuring everyone fits in. Even ‘Sweet Ben.’

The live demonstration of the Impossible Selfie allowed visitors to trial the new device and experience first-hand how its powerful Galaxy AI features can benefit Australians’ lives in tangible ways. Made in collaboration with Traffik and installation artist James Dive, ‘Sweet Ben’ took a colossal seven weeks to produce, standing three metres tall and encompassing an impressive four metre footprint.
