A Smarter Way To Manage Food, Home, Family Communication and Entertainment

Samsung’s new refrigerators incorporate the intuitive 9” AI Home screen and 32” or 21.5” Family Hub screens, which are designed to enhance four key areas of daily life: Food, Home, Family Communication and Entertainment. The first category, food, is powered by the upgraded AI Vision Inside, which adds four more food items to the list of recognizable types for a total of 37. Furthermore, adding on to fresh food items, AI Vision Inside can now also recognize processed food items. Refrigerators with the enhanced AI Vision Inside will recognize and recommend users to save processed food items that have been placed inside multiple times, allowing up to 50 items to be saved with designated names³. Based on the improved food list, the screen will provide tailored recipe recommendations and meal planning⁴, making home cooking more seamless and personalized.

Beyond food, the screens also enhance smart home connectivity. The latest advancements provide deeper integration into the smart home ecosystem, making the refrigerator a central hub capable of controlling connected appliances throughout the entire home. With the integration of Map View, users can monitor and control Samsung appliances and even third-party smart home devices⁵ like lights and smart plugs. There’s also SmartThings Energy⁶, which helps users track and optimize their energy consumption, facilitating greater efficiency in everyday life. The intuitive display provides users with access to a great deal of information about their home, with users also being able to issue voice commands through Bixby⁷.

The new Daily Board feature keeps everyone informed and connected. Placed at the heart of the home, the refrigerator screen delivers real-time updates throughout the day — whether it’s the morning weather and schedule before heading to work, or daily energy consumption reports in the evening. Users can also easily access their schedules through voice commands and receive tailored responses. By recognizing each family member’s voice and replying accordingly, Bixby will serve as both a helpful assistant for the entire household and for each person individually⁸. Additional family-focused features include a shared gallery for storing precious memories and a calendar to help with daily planning.

Samsung’s latest refrigerators also redefine entertainment in the kitchen, allowing users to stay engaged while cooking or spending time with family. With Spotify integration, users can listen to their favorite music or podcasts directly from their fridge⁹. SmartView Mirroring enables seamless screen sharing from smartphones or Samsung TVs, and the dedicated gallery feature lets families display their favorite photos, adding a personal touch to the kitchen

The Next Generation of Refrigeration

The 4-Door Refrigerator is designed to meet the needs of modern households with its innovative features¹⁰. The 9” AI Home applied on select models allows the refrigerator to integrate seamlessly with the smart home ecosystem.

The 4-Door Refrigerator also comes in Kitchen Fit design, allowing agile installation that requires only a tiny gap of just 4mm from the sides and 20mm from the top. Also, the refrigerator’s doors have been enhanced with SpaceMax insulation technology that uses less amount of high-efficiency insulation, increasing the space in the doors by 56% compared to previous models equaling 10L in capacity¹¹. Users can also enjoy convenience with the wide opening door that opens more than 90 degrees, and the food showcase to store frequently used items.

The 4-Door French Door Refrigerator, launching in North America, is available in various configurations, including a 32” Family Hub and a 9” AI Home. This flexibility allows users to choose the best fit for their kitchen. The Auto Open Door¹² feature ensures hassle-free accessibility with just a gentle tap, making it accessible to everyone in all kinds of situations to effortlessly access the inside of the fridge. It also has a Beverage Center that includes a water dispenser and a 1.4L Auto-Fill Water Pitcher that is BPA free¹³. Apart from ensuring that fresh, filtered water is always available, the pitcher also allows users to infuse their water with fruits and herbs.

All three types of refrigerators come with the AI Energy Mode feature, allowing users to reduce energy consumption by up to an additional 10%¹⁴. Users can choose to activate the mode always, or when electricity bills are expected to exceed the preset target.

2024 Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+, featuring AI Vision Inside, and Anyplace Induction Cooktop connect with AI-updated Samsung Food

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced that it will use CES® 2024 to introduce Samsung’s newest kitchen products, applications and features, which include artificial intelligence (AI) features and SmartThings connectivity, enabling an ecosystem that delivers new food and kitchen experiences with Samsung products. Notable products and features in the lineup include the 2024 Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+[1] — which was Samsung’s first home Internet of Things (IoT) refrigerator launched in 2016 — now equipped with the all-new AI Vision Inside feature, the new Anyplace Induction Cooktop and enhancements to the Samsung Food service.

AI Features That Enable Food Ideas and Intelligence

To enhance the experience in the kitchen, the 2024 Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+ has been packed with a variety of innovative technologies. One impressive new feature is AI Vision Inside, which uses a smart internal camera that can visualize items in the refrigerator. Also, it is equipped with ‘Vision AI’ technology, which can identify up to 33 different fresh food items based on a predefined set of training data comprising approximately one million food photographs.[2] With the food list that is available and editable on the Family Hub+ screen, users can also manually add expiration date information for items that they would like to keep track of, and the refrigerator sends out alerts through its 32” LCD screen for these items before reaching the set expiry date.

Also, with the assistance of the Fridge Manager feature, which monitors the status of the water filter in the refrigerator and sends an alert when a replacement is needed.

Appliance screen functionality does not stop there. Samsung’s new Anyplace Induction Cooktop and Slide-in Range are each equipped with a 7” LCD screen, where users can view the recipes that were selected and saved from the Family Hub+ to assist their meal preparation. Anti-Scratch Glass applied instead of a typical ceramic glass also helps to resist scratches on the induction surface..

What’s more, the Samsung Food application — which can now be accessed on the Family Hub+, and the Slide-in Range — has several new AI features. The ‘Personalize’ feature³ powered by Food AI allows users to adapt recipes to reflect their dietary requirements, including gluten-free, pescatarian, dairy-free, and other diets. Meanwhile, the new ‘Image-to-Recipe’ feature[3] with Vision AI now recognizes potential meals that can be made with the ingredients in your fridge. Lastly, Tailored Meal Plan analyzes users’ information by connecting to their Samsung Health profiles[4] to create personalized meals based on their wellness preferences.

AI-Enabled Connected Appliances and Features for an Enhanced Kitchen Every Day

With the Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+ as the center piece, the Samsung kitchen ecosystem is all about how the AI features in these kitchen products and the Samsung Food service connect to deliver a  range of smart, connected kitchen experiences.

Samsung Food also connects to Samsung Health[5]. The feature uses the information collected from Samsung Health to suggest recipes that suit users’ preferences. After that, users can send cooking instructions for these recipes to their various kitchen appliances with just a few key presses.

Samsung Electronics will mark the beginning of a new chapter for home appliances today at Bespoke Life 2023, the company’s third annual showcase of the latest updates to its Bespoke lineup. Sustainable Life – Technologies That Make a Positive Impact 

Samsung’s Bespoke Life concept was born out of the belief that home appliances are key to creating a more sustainable tomorrow. Accordingly, this year’s Bespoke event will highlight Samsung’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions across the entire product lifecycle. It will also announce the launch of the new Less Microfiber Filter: a simple solution for minimizing microplastic emissions during laundry cycles[1].

Samsung Electronics recently announced the global launch of SmartThings Home Life, offering consumers worldwide a more holistic smart home experience. Initially unveiled at CES 2022, the new model is available in a choice of 3-door and 4-door configurations, and with options that include Family Hub. Built into the refrigerator’s interior to reduce the risk of contamination, the Beverage Center offers fast and easy access to refreshingly cold and naturally flavoured water. As soon as it is placed inside the fridge, the BPA free^[1] Autofill Pitcher automatically fills with purified water, which can be infused with fruits and herbs to create deliciously flavoured beverages.

The Dual Auto Ice Maker produces both Cubed Ice and Ice Bites^TM, which are smaller than ice cubes and can chill drinks much faster. It is capable of producing 5.3lbs (2.4kg) of ice per day and stores up to 9.9lbs(4.5kg)^[2] – twice the amount of other ice makers. Its sliding cover makes it easy to use an ice scoop and helps protect ice from exposure to air when the freezer door is open.

The refrigerator’s FlexZone^[3] helps keep foods fresh by storing them under optimal conditions. With five pre-set temperature modes, including Soft Freeze, Meat/Fish, Beverage, Deli and Wine, this independently controlled compartment offers families the flexibility to store a wide range of items depending on their needs.

Bigger Is Better

Q: What can you tell us about the home appliance products and technologies that are being showcased at CES 2022?

We are going to focus on introducing the Bespoke kitchen, in which refrigerators and colours are unified to great effect. The Bespoke kitchen begins with our flagship Bespoke refrigerators. We’ve expanded the Bespoke range to FDR (French Door refrigerators) in 4-door and 3-door models. This represents a significant expansion of our lineup following the release of Bespoke refrigerators in 4-Door Flex, Bottom Mount Freezer and 1-Door Column types in 2021.

One new point of innovation for Samsung’s Bespoke refrigerator is the Beverage Centre. Featuring a water dispenser hidden inside the door, the Beverage Centre offers a convenient solution that enables the fridge to feature a smooth exterior. Along with the new Bespoke refrigerators, we’re also showcasing other vibrant and colourful products that are part of the Bespoke kitchen like oven ranges and dishwashers.

These days, we’re seeing more customers choose modern designs for their kitchens. With Bespoke, we want to show that it’s possible to decorate your kitchen based on your individual tastes with a palette that includes colours that blend in with your interior, as well as accent colours[1].

At CES, we are also showcasing SmartThings Cooking, a service that introduces connected experiences to the kitchen. With this service, users can receive recipe recommendations and information to help them save time on both prep and cooking. SmartThings Cooking recommends recipes that fit your tastes and dietary preferences, then builds meal plans to match. As you’re cooking, it also sends recipe instructions directly to synced compatible Samsung cooking devices.

Q: What are some unique or attractive aspects of the new Bespoke offerings that you don’t want visitors at CES to miss?

First, I’d like to underline the expansion of the Bespoke range, which gives consumers who want their refrigerator to reflect their preferences in terms of colour and materials even more options to choose from. Since launching Bespoke in 2021, we’ve seen continuous demand for this type of customization. Delivering on this is one of the reasons we added the French Door refrigerator to our 2022 Bespoke refrigerator lineup. The panels come in twelve colours, which means that there are over 20,000 possible colour combinations for a four-door refrigerator alone.

Another can’t-miss aspect is the features. The Beverage Centre, for instance includes a 1.4-liter AutoFill water pitcher, as well as a Dual Auto Ice Maker that holds up to 4.1kg of ice. What’s more, the FlexZone offers five different temperature modes to help keep ingredients like meat, seafood, fruits and vegetables at optimal temperatures. These unique features help bring greater convenience to users’ daily lives.

Users also get to experience an even smarter kitchen with Family Hub, which is included in the latest Bespoke refrigerator lineup. By using the large screen on the front of the refrigerator users can enjoy music and videos in the kitchen and control kitchen appliances and smart devices too. With a screen that integrates seamlessly into the door panel, and with a highly aesthetic design and minimized bezels, the Bespoke Family Hub is capable of blending into almost any space.

Q: Our way of life has changed dramatically over the past two years, with technology that connects people becoming more important as contactless ways of doing things increasingly become the norm. What kind of impact do you think the products and technologies showcased at CES 2022 will have on people’s lives?

As users have begun to spend more and more time at home, their lives have become more “home-centric.” We expect this trend to continue in 2022. At the same time, concern for sustainability continues to increase on the heels of events like the United Nations’ COP26 conference, and with environmental regulations being strengthened across the globe. With these shifts in consumer lifestyles and interests in mind, Samsung has been working to provide kitchen solutions that are “customized, smarter, and more sustainable.”

Our customized kitchen solutions cater to users who have been spending a lot of time in their kitchen and thus feel a stronger desire to remodel their space to reflect their tastes. By expanding our Bespoke lineup, we are providing a more diverse range of refrigerator types and colour options, helping users build customized kitchens that suit both their lifestyle and their interior design scheme.

Spending more time at home has naturally led to a rise in home cooking as well. To help make this easier by making kitchens “smarter”, Samsung introduced SmartThings Cooking[2], a tailored cooking journey service that can do everything from looking up recipes to creating a diet plan. Powered by Whisk’s Food AI, SmartThings Cooking recommends your personalized recipe and meal plans based on your tastes, dietary preferences and groceries you have on hand. When it comes time to cook, SmartThings ensures a seamless cooking experience while communicating directly with your smart Samsung kitchen appliances.

And with Family Hub, consumers can even utilize this service through the display on the front of their fridge while continuing to control other home appliances from it as well.

Finally, our kitchen solutions are becoming “more sustainable.” Samsung continues to innovate on this front, seeking out ways to incorporate cutting-edge technology into our appliances while keeping sustainability in mind as well.

The Freestyle : Designing a Projector That’s Not Limited by Space

Q: Could you walk us through how your team came up with The Freestyle?

Ever since the pandemic changed our daily lives, our personal spaces have become more and more important. This is particularly true of relaxing spaces like the bedroom, where we’re seeing more people using products for the purposes of entertainment. We’re also seeing more people utilize cozy and quiet spaces in their homes, as well as increased interest in spending time outdoors – by going camping, for example. We wanted to reflect these trends of our time in our products, and enable users to use them as they wish – anytime, anywhere, and regardless of space limitations. That’s how we came up with the personal, movable smart projector that is The Freestyle.

Q: What are unique points of the Freestyle?

The Freestyle was designed to offer users new levels of functionality. It’s easy to see what sets this product apart just by looking at it. To allow users to carry around every day, we designed The Freestyle to be lightweight, weighing just 830 grams. The fact that you can conveniently carry it with you wherever you go is its biggest advantage.

The Freestyle also features a simpler installation process. All users need to do is place The Freestyle wherever they want, and then turn it on. That’s it. The Freestyle comes with full auto keystone and auto leveling features, enabled by cutting edge technology. The features allow the device to automatically adjust its screen to any surface at any angle, providing a proportional image every time.

Users can enjoy a seamless and continuous viewing experience by accessing their user accounts and settings for various streaming apps and services. On top of that, we’ve also applied far-field voice control technology. So when the screen is turned on, users can search for content using just their voice. When the screen is off, they can use the device to listen to music or ask for the day’s weather just as they would with a smart speaker.

The Freestyle’s picture and sound quality – the most basic and important features of any display – also deserve a closer look. We applied Samsung TVs’ picture quality engine, and the white balance is adjusted automatically according to the colour and tone of the wall that the screen is being projected to. We also applied dual passive radiators to produce deep, high-quality bass. This allows customers to enjoy a cinema-like sound experience no matter where they are.

Q: In line with Samsung’s ‘Screens Everywhere’ vision, The Freestyle can be utilized in various ways for maximum convenience. What are some specific use cases for The Freestyle?

First of all, The Freestyle can be conveniently set up in a user’s bedroom. While lying in bed, before falling asleep, they can use the device’s integrated cradle to move the screen from the wall to the ceiling to continue watching a movie more comfortably. The Freestyle can also be placed lightly on a dining room table, transforming the room into a new space for entertainment.

For powering it up, The Freestyle is compatible with external batteries^[3] that support USB-PD and 50W/20V output or above, so users can take it with them anywhere, whether they are on the move, on a camping trip and more. When it’s not used as a projector to stream content, The Freestyle also provides mood lighting effect thanks to its ambient mode and translucent lens cap ^[4].

Through close cooperation with Samsung’s MX (Mobile eXperience) Business, we’ve equipped The Freestyle with a button that syncs it with compatible Galaxy devices. With just a push of a button, users can instantly use their mobile device as a remote control^[5]. They can also utilize mobile hotspots when no Wi-Fi networks are available. We’ve developed this product by paying close attention to even the smallest details, all to make the device just as convenient and easy to use outdoors as it is at home.

First introduced at Bespoke Home 2021 and coming to global markets in 2022, the Bespoke Jet cordless stick vacuum cleaner brings Bespoke innovation into the living room.

Featuring Samsung’s All-in-One Clean Station, the Bespoke Jet takes the chore out of keeping your home clean. Once they are done cleaning, users can simply dock the vacuum cleaner and it will automatically empty the dust bag and begin to charge.

The Bespoke Jet also features a modern, premium design that is powerful yet light, and built to offer families a comprehensive cleaning solution. It provides 210W[1] of suction power and uses a multi-layered filtration system to trap 99.999 percent of fine dust[2], delivering a powerful yet simple cleaning experience to the contemporary home.

Bespoke Washer and Dryer

Designed to introduce Bespoke to the laundry room, the Bespoke Washer and Dryer include cutting-edge smart features that make doing laundry intuitive and efficient. Both devices feature a flat-front design and are available in multiple colour options, including black and navy.

By learning usage patterns and laundry routines, the AI-powered Smart Dial prioritizes frequently used settings, helping minimizing work and simplifying the washing and drying process. Meanwhile, the intelligent AI OptiWash function optimizes wash settings as well as time and detergent levels for each load, taking more of the guesswork out of laundry. Evidenced by its CES showing, Samsung is placing the consumer at the centre of the action. Beyond the living area, Samsung personalization extends into the kitchen with the Samsung Bespoke Refrigerator. “With Canadians spending more time at home, the kitchen has become increasingly central to their lifestyle. The Samsung Bespoke Refrigerator is a unique blend of personalized aesthetic with premium refrigeration. It features customizable outside panels in a variety of colours, materials and finishes to reflect your personal style, together with customizable and convertible compartments on the inside.

If you own a Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator, on the other hand, you might take advantage of SmartThings Cooking (available via the SmartThings app). SmartThings Cooking is a collection of recipes seen on a large screen at the front of the appliance that are tailored to your personal preferences or diet (such as vegan) as well as ingredients currently in your fridge. When you tap on something you’d like to make, swipe through step-by-step instructions — and then send instructions from the fridge to a compatible Samsung oven to preheat at the correct temperature (note: a Wi-Fi connection and Samsung Account are required).

Artificial Intelligence

While there’s AI in Samsung televisions, appliances and smartphones, the company dominated the buzz at CES with its look at futuristic human-centric robots.

Samsung Bot Handy, for example, is a domestic robot prototype that can roam around a home to perform chores such as pick up clothes from the floor, set the table or load dirty dishes into a dishwasher. It can even pour a glass of wine.

While very much a conceptual demonstration rather than a ready-to-ship product at this point, the tall and thin Bot Handy will be powered by AI, a camera and a versatile arm to accomplish all its tasks.

While Bot Handy is designed to service your home, Samsung Bot Care will be created to assist homeowners.

Bot Care leverages AI to recognize and understand your behaviours in an effort to be a more effective personal companion such as measuring your heart rate, breathing and more — and can alert users when they need to take their medicine. For elderly users who might live alone, it could notify caregivers, such as remote family members, if someone is experiencing an emergency. While still in its research and development stage, it’s a glimpse into the future of personal self-care.

Responsible tech

At CES 2021, Samsung discussed its deeper commitment to sustainability. Together with investing in people — ranging from STEM-focused educational programs to comprehensive accessibility features for greater inclusion — Samsung has vowed to create more eco-conscious products and packaging.

For example, AI-powered washing machines can save water and power by optimizing water, detergent and wash cycles.

Upcoming TVs from Samsung will include a remote made entirely out of recycled plastic — and won’t require batteries as it will charge via overhead lighting. In 2021, Samsung will also bring its eco-packaging solutions to all TV and soundbar products.

Finally, Galaxy Upcycling at Home is a program that reimagines the lifecycle of an older Galaxy phone, allowing the user to transform it into a new device with a new purpose, such as turning it into a baby monitor or security camera.

SmartThings Cooking recommends personalized recipes based on your unique taste and preferences—as well as what’s on hand—to curate personalized recipe recommendations so you can plan meals for your family more efficiently. You can even browse the categorized recipe collections to match your craving, ingredient choice, or mood.

Every recipe is laid out to guide you through the simplified cooking process and timing, explaining each step like an at-home cooking class.

SmartThings Cooking is powered by Whisk, a smart food platform acquired by Samsung NEXT. Whisk’s Food AI brings together user preferences, intent, and environmental factors to deliver personalized cooking experiences. Simply save a few of your favourite recipes into the recipe box and, if you wish, share your personal food preferences and your location to the platform. You will then receive customized recommendations.

Although SmartThings Cooking is a standalone service accessible via the SmartThings app,[3] Family Hub owners can also enjoy meal planning conveniently from their fridge.[4] The smart fridge offers a full-screen dedicated board optimized for SmartThings Cooking which works with Family Hub to understand what’s inside the fridge.

Samsung’s Family Hub for 2021 also brings powerful new capabilities that make it the centre of a smart home. Widgets for the most frequently used functions have become easier to use, with a larger music widget that includes personalized recommendations and an upgraded SmartThings widget that serves as a dashboard for all your smart home devices. Family members can upload photos, notes, and more to any screen so that you can use all of the Family Hub screens like the Family Board feature, first introduced in 2019.
