Samsung Electronics Canada Inc. has announced the launch of the 2025/2026 Solve for Tomorrow Contest, a nationwide initiative challenging Canadian students in grades 6–12 to use STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) to develop real-world solutions that make a meaningful impact in their communities.

Canadian youth are eager to develop STEM skills, yet classrooms are not resourced to support in a meaningful way. Solve for Tomorrow aims to address this gap by creating hands-on, applied experiences that help students develop the skills they need for the future.

State of STEM in Canada: Data Snapshot

98 per cent of Canadians say it is important for youth to develop STEM skills

Only 40 per cent believe schools have the resources to prepare students for STEM careers, with nearly two in three expressing that schools are not well equipped with the tools needed

90 per cent say hands on experiences spark student interest in STEM*

Now in its 11th year, Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow offers a unique opportunity for youth to engage further with STEM concepts. The contest has reached over 40,000 students across Canada and contributed more than one million dollars in technology and grants to empower future leaders through innovation.

Even as career pathways expand, many young people face hard limits on access. 40 per cent of Canadians feel schools are not well equipped to provide youth with the tools and knowledge needed for future careers, while 47 per cent of Canadians point to the cost of higher education as the biggest barrier to pursuing STEM studies.* Concerns around confidence, inclusivity, and equitable access compound the challenge, narrowing the number of students who feel able to participate in these fast-growing fields.

Solve for Tomorrow encourages students to explore STEM in new ways by offering a challenge that sparks creativity and real-world problem-solving.

“Solve for Tomorrow represents more than a program; it’s a catalyst for systemic change,” said Tafari Jilany, Head of Corporate Marketing, Samsung Canada. “Canadians are aligned on the value of STEM, and the data highlights a clear need for more hands-on learning and stronger support for youth. Our focus is to give students the tools to explore, experiment and contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive and connected future.”

Canadians are calling for applied STEM and AI education that connects classrooms with real-world problem solving. 89 per cent of Canadians support partnerships that make STEM education more practical, and many see them as essential preparation for future careers.*

Designed to put a spotlight on STEM, the Solve for Tomorrow contest will help do the following:

Integrate STEM with practical real-world applicability, helping to create long-term educational impact

Inspire diverse student participation, helping to highlight opportunity gaps in STEM education

Accelerate community-led problem solving, challenging students to turn local insights into broader solutions

Kevin Lau and Ann Baek devised an innovative solution to solve long queues in emergency departments Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow Contest challenges

Kevin Lau and Ann Baek devised an innovative solution to solve long queues in emergency departments

Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow Contest challenges Canadian youth to devise innovative, STEM-based solutions that will have a meaningful impact on their local communities. In 2022, Kevin Lau and Ann Baek, Team Triage Kiosk, aimed to improve their local hospital wait times through devising an innovative solution: a Samsung AI-powered triage kiosk.

As the 2023/24 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest is in full swing, we caught up with Team Triage Kiosk about their experiences winning the contest, and how they’re bringing their idea to life with assistance from the Samsung team.

1. Tell us about your overall experience with the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest.

Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow competition was an opportunity to think progressively and create a proposed solution for today’s real-world problems that could have an impact on our communities moving forward. Each hurdle we faced was a learning opportunity in an exciting journey that we never wanted to end!

2. How did you come up with the idea for a Triage Kiosk?

While brainstorming many ideas about the issues around the world, we felt that the wait times in hospitals were an issue that many faced without a proposed solution. Currently, there is a shortage of healthcare workers, contributing to prolonged wait times in emergency rooms. By using STEM, we thought that it could help ease the burden off healthcare workers and also reassure patients.

3. Why did you decide to enter the contest?

We decided to enter the contest to bring our ideas to life. We wanted to take on a challenge to something we haven’t tried out before. When we first entered the contest, we just wanted to try our best and it would still be worthwhile if we didn’t win anything because we gave it our all.

4. How was your experience with the Solve for Tomorrow Masterclass?

The Solve for Tomorrow Masterclass with Andini Makosinski was an insightful information session before the final submission. We got to hear about her experience as an inventor and how she’s navigated her career. We loved hearing about her future plans and what she hoped to accomplish as someone with multiple commitments. It also felt encouraging that we were headed in the correct direction with our project as we faced obstacles along the way in creating our video.

5. How did it feel to win the contest?

We were delighted when we received news of our achievement. With all the hard work that went into developing the Triage Kiosk, it was amazing to hear that it all paid off in the end, knowing our idea could impact and create change in healthcare.

6. What has Team Triage Kiosk been up to since you won? How are you bringing the idea to life?

Ever since we won, we have been working with Samsung Canada to bring the product to life by partnering with EPIC, the patient charting software that is used by hospitals such as the University Health Network. Personally speaking, Ann is finishing up her undergraduate degree, pursuing her CPA designation; while Kevin is a full-time primary care paramedic.

7. What advice would you give to classrooms looking to enter this year?

To this year’s participants – being only limited to your imagination, our advice is to seek what inspires you, and use it to fuel your ideas. We are all capable of implementing change in our society for a brighter, more sustainable future.

Samsung Canada today announced the launch of the 2023/24 Solve for Tomorrow Contest, an annual competition that invites youth from across Canada to develop innovative solutions that will make a meaningful impact on their communities.

60 per cent of Canadian youth are concerned about the impacts of climate change – but 53 per cent are optimistic that new technologies will allow us to limit its effects.[1] Recognizing the crucial need and desire among youth to spark change, and in line with its commitment to building A Smarter Future with Samsung, Samsung has proudly revamped this year’s Solve for Tomorrow contest to focus on sustainability challenges, awarding over $100,000 in prizing to Canadian schools. In partnership with dedicated sustainability organization, Earth Rangers, Samsung will provide the foundation for youth to develop their ideas and strive to make them a reality through mentorship, resources, and financial support.

This year, Samsung is inviting Canadian teachers and their classrooms from grades 6 to 12 to take part in the contest.[2] The top five finalist teams, chosen by a panel of judges, will receive dedicated mentorship to help refine their submissions, and will compete for the grand prize of $50,000 – plus receiving the honour of being named “The School for Tomorrow.” The second and third place finalist teams will each receive $10,000, and all five finalists will receive the opportunity to get a $5,000 voucher towards Samsung technology for their schools. In addition, as a new element this year, Samsung will invite Canadians to select their favourite submission through the new “People’s Choice Award” with the most popular team winning an additional $5,000.

“This year’s Solve for Tomorrow Contest brings together our commitment to building towards a sustainable future while amplifying the innovative ideas of Canadian youth,” said Jihoon Lee, President and CEO, Samsung Canada. “We are excited to see the thoughtful, inspiring solutions from Canada’s classrooms come to life this year to help build towards a brighter tomorrow.”

“The Solve for Tomorrow Contest is a fantastic opportunity for students to use their passion and creativity towards envisioning real solutions to help fight climate change. Earth Rangers’ research consistently shows that the key to combating climate anxiety in young people is through positive action and this project encourages that in a compelling way.” said Tovah Barocas, President, Earth Rangers.

For over a decade, Samsung has celebrated youth innovation through the Solve for Tomorrow Contest. Last year’s winners, Team Triage Kiosk, developed an innovative STEM-based solution to solve long queues in emergency departments. Previous winners also include Project Enviroot, a sustainable, non-toxic alternative to softboard material made from discarded orange peel waste, and Project HeartStarter, a drone-powered automated external defibrillator (AED) delivery service for patients experiencing cardiac arrest.

From now until January 31st, 2024, Canadian classrooms can submit their applications at samsung.com/ca/solve.
